Canada push Guyana to limit in Red Stripe clash

After a win in their opening Red Stripe bowl match Canada faced the defending champions, a powerful Guyana side led by Carl Hooper

Dave Liverman16-Aug-2002After a win in their opening Red Stripe bowl match Canada faced the defending champions, a powerful Guyana side led by Carl Hooper. On paper this should have been a one-sided match, and Guyana did indeed win, but not without a real struggle, and by just 28 runs. The Canadian bowlers and fielders gave Canada a chance of a major upset by restricting Guyana to just 187. Guyana won the toss and chose to bat, opening with Chattergoon and Sarwan. Austin Codrington had Chattergoon caught at cover early but Chanderpaul and Sarwan put together a solid partnership. The Canadians bowled a good line and length and when combined with excellent fielding, the batsman found runs hard to score- Sarwan took 28 balls to get off the mark. With the run-rate well below par, Chanderpaul essayed a big drive off Davison and was neatly stumped by Bagai. If a couple of catches had been held (Sarwan was dropped early on, and Hooper put down in the deep) Guyana could have had most of their best batting gone with only a hundred on the board. Sarwan (40) was trapped lbw by Davison, bringing in Cush, who hit his first ball for a big six. He and Hooper looked to be building a useful partnership when Cush holed out at deep mid-wicket off Davison. Davison struck again when Bagai made another stumping to dismiss Deoranine (2).Nick de Groot had bowled just 14 overs in one-day cricket for Guyana, and had failed to regain his spot in the Guyana team last season. He made the critical, and no doubt personally satisfying, breakthrough when a superb leg-side catch by Bagai removed Hooper for 40. Wickets tumbled at the end and Guyana were never really able to accelerate; Canada were in a tremendous position to cause a huge upset when the innings closed at 187/9. Davison picked up four wickets, de Groot bowled his 10 overs for 28 runs, and Bagai was superb behind the stumps.Former Guyana opener Fazil Sattaur opened the innings with Ishwar Maraj and set the tone with a fierce pull for four off Stuart’s first over. He too was playing against his former team, and made a rapid 21 before being bowled by Test pacer Reon King with 37 runs on the board. He and Maraj had seen Canada off to a good start, but they were unable to build on this platform. Maraj played on to Nagamootoo, Chumney was fooled by McGarrell’s arm ball, and Bagai was run out, leaving Canada at 74/4 with 26 overs gone. The stage was set for de Groot and Harris, and they batted carefully against good bowling. Canadian hopes died when both fell in quick succession as they tried to push the run-rate, Harris to another run-out. The tail battled bravely but Canada were all out in the 49th over as Mahindra Nagamootoo snapped up four wickets. The Canadians all but won this match with their hard work in the field. To dismiss a side like Guyana with batsmen like Sarwan, Hooper and Chanderpaul for under 200 is no mean achievement. Guyana are an experienced side however, and can defend a small total well. Canada needed a significant innings from one of their batsmen, and this did not happen. The absence of Ian Billcliff through injury did not help, as well as losing two middle order bats to run-outs at a critical stage of the game. However Canada can be heartened by the fact they gave perhaps the strongest side in West Indies domestic cricket a real run for their money. They now take a four-day break before facing the Rest of the Windwards XI on 21 August.

West Ham in Armstrong battle

According to a report by the Sun, West Ham United are in a three-way battle with Southampton and Norwich to sign Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong.

The Lowdown: Armstrong and the Hammers…

Links to Armstrong have been fairly consistent over the last few months, with ExWHUemployee saying back in March that he is on the shortlist of striker targets for GSB and co this summer (Patreon).

A recent report by the Lancashire Telegraph even explained how a Hammers enquiry has already been lodged for the player this summer.

The striking position is said to be a main priority for the club to strengthen this transfer window alongside the acquisition of a star centre-back and Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal (Claret & Hugh).

The Latest: West Ham in three-way tussle…

Bringing an update, the Sun now say that West Ham are still in contention for Armstrong but face a three-way battle to sign him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Norwich City and Southampton are the other interested parties tussling it out for the £25 million-rated Championship star.

Meanwhile, Armstrong’s current club are already weighing up a replacement in case he does leave Ewood Park.

Indeed, Rovers have apparently set their sights on Blackpool star Jerry Yates as his possible heir.

The Verdict: Perfect target?

Armstrong has earned many admirers from within the Championship and beyond.

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton showered the 24-year-old with praise back in February, calling him an ‘outstanding’ and Premier League-level centre forward (West London Sport).

Meanwhile, pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor even told Football Insider that he would be a ‘perfect signing’ for West Ham specifically.

However, if Blackburn demand £25m for his signature, you could say that it would be a gamble despite his tremendous 29-goal haul in all competitions over 2020/2021 (Transfermarkt).

Armstrong has little experience in the English top flight and West Ham arguably need a forward who is proven at the very highest level and can score consistently against toughest opposition.

Therefore, despite his accolades and plaudits, we believe his price tag could still make him a risky purchase.

LFC fans unhappy with Baumgartner interest

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy after the Reds were linked with a move for Hoffenheim midfielder Christoph Baumgartner.

Gini Wijnaldum will swap the Reds for Paris Saint-Germain this summer, bringing an end to a wonderful five-year spell at Anfield.

The Dutchman has been a hugely influential performer for Liverpool, playing a major role in their success under Jurgen Klopp, winning both the Champions League and Premier League.

Wijnaldum’s exit means a new midfielder may need to join the Reds in the next few months, ensuring Klopp still has great depth in the middle of the park.

Florian Neuhaus has been continually linked with a move to Merseyside and now Baumgartner has been tipped to head there, too, according to Kicker.

The 21-year-old is currently playing at Euro 2020 with Austria and made 31 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim last season, scoring six goals and registering three assists.

Porto plotting £10m Alfredo Morelos bid

An update has emerged on FC Porto’s pursuit of Alfredo Morelos regarding how much they are prepared to pay for the Rangers forward.

What’s the talk?

According to The Scottish Sun, the Portuguese giants are preparing to submit a £10m offer for the Colombian striker, whose agent was in Portugal last week amid speculation over Morelos’ future, and Porto are now set to firm up their interest with a bid.

They had been working under strict guidelines after being punished by UEFA for player trading offences, but now that they are free of those shackles, they are attempting to bring Morelos to the Estadio Dragao.

Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership player said that Morelos is “non-stop” and labeled him as a nightmare for defenders, saying: “In my experience, he is just non-stop.

“There’s never a time when he’s walking about or not interested in the game. He’s always involved, whether that’s taking you away or dragging you closer to the ball.

“He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space. That means you need to start talking to your full-backs and centre-mids to start swapping players, which makes it a lot more difficult.”

Gerrard would be fuming

Rangers must avoid a major error this summer and reject Porto’s £10m bid for Morelos when it arrives at Ross Wilson’s desk next week. Wilson needs to immediately veto the proposal and demand a larger sum of money for the club’s main centre-forward.

When Porto were initially linked with the 25-year-old, we suggested that Rangers should look to cash in on him if they are able to receive a club-record £20m deal from the Portuguese club. However, £10m would not be enough to take the move over that threshold, which is why Wilson needs to turn it down.

That fee is only half of the £20m originally touted for Morelos, and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard would surely be fuming if Wilson allowed the Colombian to leave for such a paltry sum. £20m could be a major boost to Rangers’ coffers and allow Gerrard to improve his squad in several areas, making the team better as a whole rather than relying on one outstanding individual. This is why selling Morelos could make sense, but not for the significantly reduced fee of £10m.

The £33,000-per-week beast provided an impressive 17 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for Rangers last season, showing that he is a crucial member of Gerrard’s squad, and that is why the Gers should not jump to accept any fee for his services.

They need to get enough from the deal to sign a replacement and strengthen other positions if they are to justify selling him, and Gerrard would be fuming at losing a key player if he cannot duly strengthen. Wilson should stand firm and keep Morelos at Ibrox until a £20m offer comes through the door.

Stoke City interested in Alistair McCann

Stoke City are interested in a deal to bring Alistair McCann to the bet365 Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun on Sunday (27/06, p61) (via Football League World), who claimed that Michael O’Neill’s side are among number of Championship clubs keeping tabs on the St Johnstone midfielder ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

The report added that the Scottish Premiership side would demand a fee of around £1m in order to part with the 21-year-old this summer, with the Potters said to be attempting to raise funds through player sales in order to make a bid for the youngster.

O’Neill must move

Considering how promising McCann looked for St Johnstone last season, along with Stoke midfielder Sam Clucas being heavily linked with a move away from the club, it is unsurprising to learn that O’Neill is considering a move for the Northern Ireland international this summer.

Indeed, over his 34 Scottish Premiership appearances for Callum Davidson’s side last term, the £1.08m-rated man scored two goals and registered two assists, as well as averaging 0.7 key passes per game. The 21-year-old also impressed in more traditional central midfield metrics, averaging 1.5 interceptions and 2.7 tackles and winning 5.9 duels per league fixture.

These returns saw the man Jason Holt dubbed an “undroppable” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.85, ranking him as St Johnstone’s 10th-best performer in the Scottish top flight.

As such, should Clucas go on to leave the bet365 Stadium this summer, McCann would appear to be an ideal replacement for the 30-year-old, as well as being a player who, at just 21 years of age, would seem to have a considerably brighter future than the current Stoke man.

It would appear highly advisable for O’Neill to do all he can to get a deal over the line for his fellow countryman this summer, or else the 51-year-old runs the risk of coming up against him in the Championship next season.

Some players will need more time off after their Euro 2020 and Copa America commitments, but it will still be great to see a number of big names back in action soon.

On Wednesday, the club’s official Twitter account confirmed that they will unveil the new outfit at 8am on Thursday morning (July 8th).
