Poor Westerns finish bottom

A round-up of the last round of matches in the Logan Cup

Cricinfo staff20-May-2008Westerns, who claimed the runners-up spot last year, ended the 2008 Logan Cup without a victory after falling to a seven-wicket defeat against Easterns at Queens Sports Club. They collapsed in their second innings from 126 for 1 to 226 all out, leaving Easterns the relatively comfortable task of chasing 119 for victory.Bornaparte Mujuru and Bradley Staddon carried their second-wicket stand to 102, but there was precious little resistance to follow. Mujuru was sixth out in the middle of the collapse for 90. Stuart Matsikenyeri’s 53-ball 54 ensured there were few problems for Easterns in knocking off the runs in 23 overs. The key difference between the teams was Easterns’ first-innings recovery from 224 for 8 – still trailing Westerns by six – to a lead of 108 through the efforts of Shingirai Masakadza at No. 10 who hit 68 off 84 balls. There was an exciting finish at the Masvingo Sports Club as Southerns pulled up 36 runs short of their target while Centrals were three wickets away from victory in a match dominated by the spinners.Michael Chinouya’s four early wickets in the run chase made it hard work for Southerns and their middle order weren’t able to recover in the time remaining. It was a fitting end to a keenly contested match, which featured two fine performances in the first innings. Tarisai Mahlunge, the opening batsman and wicketkeeper, made his maiden first-class century, finishing with 145 off 360 balls. However, he had to share the honours with legspinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi – who has four ODIs under his belt – as he claimed a career-best 8 for 125.Brighton Mugochi, a 19-year-old left-arm spinner, responded with 5 for 80 to limit Southerns’ lead to 12. Kamungozi couldn’t add to his haul in the second innings, but Hilary Matanga claimed six wickets to set up the tight finish.Final Standings

Sheffield United: Gabby Agbonlahor thinks George Baldock could leave

Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Sheffield United defender George Baldock to move to Scottish giants Celtic this summer.

The Lowdown: Sheffield United face multiple exits ahead of 2021/22

Looking ahead to 2021/22, newly-appointed Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic will be desperate to keep the core of his prize assets together in order to mount a promotion challenge this season.

In recent times, Aaron Ramsdale and Sander Berge have been linked with moves to Arsenal as the summer transfer window continues.

However, former Aston Villa icon Agbonlahor has tipped Baldock to be the first Bramall Lane departure this summer in a recent interview with Football Insider.

The Latest: Agbonlahor tips Baldock to leave Bramall Lane

Speaking about whether the right-back could make an impression in Scotland, the 34-year-old stated: “I do.

“I’ve really liked him at Sheffield United since they came into the Premier League. He looks so calm on the ball with his passing, he’s energetic going forwards and backwards.

“He’s passionate so he suits the Scottish league and a big club like Celtic.

“For me, that’s something that I’d definitely try and get it done and over the line.” [Football Insider].

The Verdict: Baldock saga could drag on for quite some time

Agbonlahor rightly points out the calmness and stability which Baldock has brought to the Sheffield United backline. In 2020/21, he made 34 appearances for the Blades, registering two assists [Transfermarkt].

Showing his defensive instincts, the 28-year-old made 127 recoveries across the campaign [premierleague.com] whilst also averaging 1.9 clearances per match [WhoScored].

Expected to be an important player for the Yorkshiremen next season if he stays, Sheffield United supporters may well be praying that Baldock is priced out of any move north of the border. With Celtic ready to pay £5m to £8m for his services [The Star], this saga seems unlikely to die down any time soon.

In other news, this pundit has praised an ex-Sheffield United midfielder after he joined a new club.

Form book points to India

Overworked v Undercooked probably sums up the state of the two title contenders in the tri-series

India might be tempted to hand Yusuf Pathan a one-day debut, especially after his sparkling performances in the recent IPL © Cricinfo Ltd
The Big PictureOverworked v Undercooked probably sums up the state of the two title contenders in the tri-series. India travel-weary bunch are probably more match-ready but they will be up against a set of players who’re coming off an extended rest. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lost just one series since being handed captaincy (against Australia) but it would require his side to stop a side coming off a 12-game winning streak.India taking on Pakistan in a neutral venue was almost a norm in the ’90s – when the teams faced off in conditions as diverse as Sharjah, Toronto and Singapore – but the two sides have managed that only for five games in the last five years. The form guide also looks slightly different from the last decade – India have an 8-3 advantage in the last 11 games – and have a side that’s learnt how to hold its nerve in the crunch.Geoff Lawson, the Pakistan coach, has wished for his side to hand India a drubbing. The result of the game may not have a bearing on the finalists in this tournament but the confidence built up will no doubt come in handy during the Asia Cup and Champions Trophy – two titles both sides would want in their kitty.Form guide – India Last five matches: WWWLW (most recent first)
Player to watch: India might be tempted to hand Yusuf Pathan a one-day debut, especially after his sparkling performances in the recent IPL. Apart from his explosive batting skills, which will no doubt come in handy lower down the order, he could be useful with his fastish offbreaks and electric intensity on the field. He’s shown the ability to clear the boundary under pressure and often guided his side – the Rajasthan Royals – in tense run-chases.Form guide – Pakistan Last five matches: WWWWW (most recent first)
Player to watch: Wahab Riaz’s three wickets set up Pakistan’s big win the other night but this will be his first real test. His three ODIs and a Twenty20 have all come against lesser opposition and it will be interesting to see how he stands up to a relatively stronger batting line-up. India, on the other hand, will be wary of one of the rising stars in Pakistan cricket, someone whose rhythmic action and pace has already caught the eye.Team newsVirender Sehwag didn’t practice on match-eve but Gary Kirsten, the coach, said it was only because of a slight cold. India would want to try out a few options early in the tournament – particularly giving Yusuf a chance. The series offers India a chance to rotate a few players, allowing a few to get some valuable rest. Ishant Sharma would be expected to take the new ball and there could be a toss up between RP Singh and Praveen Kumar to share it. Piyush Chawla would lead a spin department with Yusuf, Yuvraj Singh and Sehwag providing back-up.India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Robin Uthappa, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Ishant Sharma.Pakistan are unlikely to change the combination that comprehensively beat Bangladesh. Fawad Alam, the left-arm spinner and batsman, didn’t have a great outing but is likely to get another chance with no real spin back-up in the squad.Pakistan (probable): 1 Salman Butt, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Younis Khan, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Shoaib Malik (capt), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Fawad Alam, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Wahab Riaz.

Pitch & conditionsIndia and Pakistan will play on a different pitch from that which was used for the first game but it is expected to play in similar fashion. Lawson said that the new ball bounced and came on to the bat but Salman Butt, who made 70 against Bangladesh, said there was grip and turn as the ball got older which did not make stroke-making easy. The weather on the eve of the match was clear, after a short shower in the morning when the Indians were going through their fielding drills. It remained sunny through the afternoon and the evening but the climate changes quickly in Dhaka. The BBC’s forecast is for heavy showers.Stats and triviaIndia and Pakistan last played at a neutral venue in mid-2006 – the DLF Cup in Abu Dhabi ended with both sides winning one game apiece.Salman Butt has 565 runs in nine matches this year, including two hundreds and three fifties. In four matches, against India, Sohail Tanvir has taken eight wickets at 22.25 apiece.Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni have been involved in five century stands in nine innings against Pakistan.Quotes” It [Transition from T20 to ODIs] is something that we’ve given consideration and thought to. We need to make sure that our game plans and strategies are designed for 50-over cricket. It is different from what you’re doing in the IPL. So we’ve worked hard over the last two days at getting our shapes right, our game plans right as to how we’re going to play the 50-over format.
Gary Kirsten on India’s need to change their mindset.”I would like to score a 150-run win over India on Tuesday.”
Geoff Lawson, the Pakistan coach, raises the bar.

Celtic: Hoops keen on Liel Abada

Celtic are interested in signing Israel international Liel Abada, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Abada profiled

Abada is 19 years of age and is primarily a right winger. He can also play on the left or through the middle and has already made 76 senior appearances for current employers Maccabi Petah Tikva.

The youngster, who has one international cap to his name, has scored 20 goals and registered 10 assists at club level and is under contract until 2024.

Abada’s Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed from £293,000 to £2.7m in just over a year, and it seems that Celtic are now keen on his services.

The Latest: Israeli sources share update

Israeli sources, relayed by The Scottish Sun, have claimed Celtic are interested in the 1.68m (5 foot 6) winger, along with clubs in Belgium, France and Greece.

Israeli agent Dudu Dahan has been given a mandate by Maccabi Petah Tikva to secure a transfer, with The Scottish Sun touting a £3.5m fee for Abada.

The teenager has left Israel to discuss a transfer with interested clubs, but it remains to be seen whether Celtic are one of those.

The Verdict: Wingers are needed

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is in need of some attacking additions to bolster his first team squad ahead of the new season.

He has just James Forrest, injury-plagued youngster Mikey Johnston and the returning Maryan Shved as senior wide options ahead of a Champions League qualifier later this month.

Dahan has helped Celtic to sign a number of players in recent years, including Nir Bitton and Ismaila Soro, so should the Hoops firm up their interest, they could be in a good position to get a deal over the line for the in-demand Abada.

Leeds United close to signing Chelsea’s Lewis Bate

Leeds United are closing in on the signing of Chelsea starlet Lewis Bate, and it’s one that Marcelo Bielsa will love.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that the 18-year-old is keen on an exit from Stamford Bridge this summer in a bid to find a club who can offer him a better pathway into the first team.

It was suggested that Bielsa’s side were one of those interested in signing him, and it now appears that Victor Orta and the Whites will get their man.

Goal’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella has revealed via Twitter: “Lewis Bate is accelerating towards Leeds. Medical could come as soon as tomorrow as the clubs thrash out a deal. #CFC”

Bielsa will love him

At just 18, the midfielder has all the potential in the world to develop into a real star at Elland Road if given the right opportunities.

The Athletic said: “Bate is one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the country, coming close to making his debut for the senior side when he was named on the bench against Sheffield United and Bayern Munich last year.

“Leeds’ hopes are growing that they could win the race for his signature but are aware of the competition. Significantly, Bate has started to follow a number of Leeds players on Instagram.”

According to Ram Srinivas, co-founder of football analytics consultancy MRKT Insights, Bate has all the hallmarks of being someone to take over from Kalvin Phillips in years to come.He said: “Bate is a well-rounded deep-lying midfielder; he’s well capable of helping a team control possession, acting as a metronome to keep things ticking over as well as being very productive in build-up. He’s very positive in his passing and shows good awareness of the spaces opening up around him and team shape, which helps his team play out of a press and also attack the opposition in transition.”All in all he’s just a multi-faceted midfielder whose biggest weakness is probably just his size but he more than makes up for it with his other qualities. He’s very well-suited to Bielsa-ball and probably capable of serving as an understudy to Kalvin Phillips.”That last line on him being “very well-suited to Bielsa-ball” is sure to have the Leeds manager excited at the prospect of working with him, especially given the success he has had in transforming Phillips from a Championship player into a genuine England star.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped an exciting Leeds United update…

Bhatia takes four as India A wallop Israel

Rajat Bhatia picked up four wickets for only five runs as India A bowled out Israel Invitational XI for 52 and chased the target for the loss of one wicket in the first of three one-day matches celebrating Israel’s 60th anniversary

Rajat Bhatia picked up four wickets for only five runs as India A bowled out Israel Invitational XI for 52 and chased the target for the loss of one wicket in the first of three one-day matches celebrating Israel’s 60th anniversary. The Israel side is made up of Jewish cricketers from around the world as well as Jonty Rhodes, the former South African batsman, who managed to score only 11 in the game. Jason Molins, the opener, also scored 11 – Israel’s top score.India raced towards the target. M Vijay hit 31 before he was caught by Bension Sagawker off Yaniv Razpurker.Rhodes said the quality of cricket was tough and he appreciated the work put in by the Israel administration to organise the tour. “The fact that India A has come all the way here to play is proof of the Israeli administration’s hard work,” Rhodes told the .Jaydev Shah, the Indian captain, said his team hadn’t realised cricket had been played in Israel for 30 years. “People need more time to develop the understanding, but we want to help move it forward. We are first-class players, this is our career. We want to play well for the national selectors as well.”

Another test for the slow starters

It would be sheer folly to write off an Indian line-up, unparalleled both in terms of experience and runs, as history suggests

Dileep Premachandran in Galle30-Jul-2008
The batting order may have been reworked in the second innings at the SSC, but that’s unlikely to happen in Galle © AFP
As embarrassing as defeat within four days at the SSC may have been, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. For all the batting records that India have piled up over the past decade, there has frequently been a tendency to start a series poorly. Whether home or away, the batsmen are slow starters who tend to come into their element once they’ve had a couple of innings to size up the opposition and the conditions. The smart money must surely be on Sri Lanka extending their fine record at Galle with a win that will ensure the series. But it would be sheer folly to write off an Indian line-up, unparalleled both in terms of experience and runs, as history suggests. Australia, who’ve played two memorable series in India this decade, could tell you that much.Back in 2001, Australia destroyed India inside three days at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, extending their winning streak to 16. Apart from Sachin Tendulkar, who played two brilliant innings, everyone else looked out of their depth in the first Test. At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata a fortnight later, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid scripted the partnership of a lifetime to change the course of both the second Test and series.Three years later, India’s batsmen were once again second-best in Bangalore, undoneby Australia’s superior pace attack. But in the second Test at Chepauk in Chennai, Virender Sehwag’s magnificent 155 drove home an advantage established by Anil Kumble’s sensational 7 for 48 on the opening day. Australia fought back, but India were still favourites heading into a final day, that was washed out. Those glitches were at home, but the situation has been no different away. On the last two tours of England, India were thoroughly outplayed at Lord’s in the opening Tests of both series. In 2002, Sehwag’s 84 was the only saving grace as England established a huge lead. Ajit Agarkar’s century in the second innings total of 397 only helped to reduce England’s victory margin to 170 runs.In 2007, England built a handy lead, and a dazzling century from Kevin Pietersen then set India a formidable target. It was left to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, aided by bad light and some generous umpiring, to salvage a draw.Sri Lanka will also be keenly aware of this Indian team’s ability to bounce back from dire defeats. On the last tour, India were thrashed by 10 wickets in Galle in the first Test, with a batting line-up missing Tendulkar and Laxman, managing just 187 and 180 in either innings. But in a low-scoring encounter in Kandy that followed, India overcame poor first-innings batting to snatch a famous victory. Dravid made 75, while Sourav Ganguly scored an unbeaten 98.On the eve of the second Test, Kumble insisted that there would be no panic measures. The batting order may have been reworked in the second innings at the SSC, but that’s unlikely to happen here, as well as Laxman batted at times in the first Test. “I have utmost confidence in my batsmen,” he said. With huge series coming up against Australia, England and Pakistan, a crushing defeat in Galle would mean the clamour for change becoming more than a dull buzz. This line-up has done India proud for more than a decade, but with the sand sliding towards the bottom of the timer, none of them will want to leave under ignominious circumstances.

Pogba now odds on for PSG switch

It seems there isn’t a summer transfer window that goes by without some sort of drama centred on the future of Paul Pogba. Much of that is likely intentional of course, with media hype probably serving to improve a player’s leverage in any negotiations with their current club or potential suitors.

His rejection of United’s most recent eye-wateringly large contract offer (allegedly worth around £250,000 per week) will not have gone unnoticed in Paris. It hasn’t gone unnoticed by the bookies either, who now have Pogba odds on to make the move to PSG before September 1. A cheeky punt on that doesn’t look like a bad shout given PSG’s aggression in the transfer market so far this summer. By taking advantage of one of the top new customer offers listed on My Betting Sites, you could effectively turn that into a risk-free or free bet, too.

At 28 years old, the Manchester United star probably has only one or two bumper contracts left before the big clubs move on to the next generation of talent. United have a tough decision to make in terms of when they should give up and leave Pogba to either find a new club or to run down the remainder of his 12-month contract.

That decision is especially tough given Pogba is undoubtedly one of the most gifted midfielders in the game at the moment. Few, if any, possess the combination of technical ability and physical presence that makes him so effective. He was instrumental in France’s 2018 World Cup win and on occasions over the last season or two he has truly looked like a man amongst boys with his performances for United.

However, the word ‘occasions’ is key here. It’s fair to say that for all his talent, Pogba can be frustratingly inconsistent. His display in France’s recent Euro 2020 last-16 match against Switzerland in particular was like a microcosm of his career to date.

15 minutes after Karim Benzema’s second goal put France in the lead, the Real Madrid man’s speculative attempt at a third was blocked by Granit Xhaka and the ball fell at Pogba’s feet, fully 30 yards from goal. Perfect control to kill the ball was followed by the deftest of second touches to set up a potential opportunity and cause French fans in Bucharest, and around the world, to scream ‘tirez!’. And Paul duly obliged, sending the ball on a bafflingly beautiful bending trajectory into the top corner past a stumped Yann Sommer.

If ever there was a goal worthy of the three or four separate celebration moves that Pogba appendaged to it, this was it. At 3-1 up with a quarter of an hour to play, France were perhaps already thinking about the quarter final. Instead, the game will be remembered for Les Bleus’ late implosion, in which Pogba played an ignominiously starring role.

In the 90th minute, he conceded possession in the centre of midfield to Xhaka, who picked out a line-breaking pass to Mario Gavranovich to fire in a wonderful equaliser. If that wasn’t bad enough, reports flew out from an unhappy France camp after their exit on penalty kicks alleging that several of Pogba’s teammates had become exasperated by the midfielder’s lack of defensive enthusiasm. Pogba ‘lost the plot’, according to France and Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit.

The very best and very worst of Paul Pogba in a single game. So, Manchester United must ask themselves – is it worth it? Are there better options out there? If Pogba’s departure frees up funds to strengthen the defensive midfield positions and allows Donny van de Beek (who looked like a world-beater in Ajax’s 2018/19 Champions League run) more minutes, there may not be too many United fans complaining.
