Club now in talks to sign £150k-p/w Newcastle ace PIF have only just landed

Newcastle could now lose one of their recent signings as one club have entered talks over landing him this January, according to a shock report.

Newcastle pushing for top four

Five Premier League wins on the bounce have propelled Newcastle up the table and back into contention for the top four come the end of the campaign, which would bring with it a return to Champions League action.

Currently fifth, the Magpies are two points behind Chelsea heading into their game against Wolves, while draws from both Manchester City and Bournemouth have given Eddie Howe’s side the chance to open up a gap over both teams in the coming days.

Better than Murphy: Newcastle looking at signing "special" £30m PL player

Newcastle are targeting attacking reinforcements this month, with one of the highest-rated teenagers in the Premier League top of their shopping list.

ByBen Gray Jan 15, 2025

With the January transfer window open though, the Magpies will need to strengthen, with the sides around them already doing so and Manchester City likely to improve with a mammoth spend this winter.

As it stands, Newcastle may have to sell players before they can buy though. Miguel Almiron is one who could leave, with the Paraguay international having made just seven Premier League appearances this campaign and starting just once. He is reportedly in advanced talks over an exit, which could net Newcastle a decent fee.

However, one player who could yet stay is Newcastle shot-stopper Martin Dubravka, despite the Slovakian veteran having already agreed a deal to leave for Saudi Arabia. His departure would force the Magpies into the market for a second-choice goalkeeper, which would waste a significant chunk of any available budget.

That budget could yet be added to with a new departure though, with one club in talks to land another Newcastle man.

Fenerbahce in talks with Newcastle over defender

That comes as Fenerbahçe have confirmed that they are “in talks” with Newcastle over a move to sign defender Lloyd Kelly just six months after his arrival on Tyneside.

The English defender, who worked with Howe at Bournemouth, joined the club as a free agent over the summer but has yet to nail down a first team spot at St James’ Park. So far, the 26-year-old has started just four top flight games for the Magpies, and with Sven Botman now returning from injury, his chances of being asked to step in are only decreasing.

Though dubbed “incredible” by Gary O’Neil when the pair worked together at Bournemouth, he has had little opportunity to show that.

Now he could depart, with Fenerbahce vice-president Acun Ilıcalı explaining that “We are in talks for a Lloyd Kelly transfer. He’s a player we’re interested in. If we can reach an agreement, we will transfer this player”, with Jose Mourinho on the hunt for a left-sided defender.

As per the Telegraph, while “Newcastle were willing to listen to Fenerbahce’s proposal”, the Turkish side’s “opening offer was considerably below their valuation of the player”.

As a result, “talks have not progressed and the Turkish club would have to significantly raise their offer for the 26-year-old if they are going to resume”, though their remains the prospect of an agreement.

With Kelly believed to be on £150,000 a week on Tyneside, his sale could free up some much needed funds for Howe’s side as they look to remain the right side of the Premier League’s financial regulations while also building a squad capable of competing for major honours, but they would need Fenerbahce to seriously up their offer.

West Indies ODI win was in spinning conditions, 'should not go to our heads', says Tamim

“If the way I plan things don’t work, how I execute Plan B will determine if I am growing as a captain”

The 3-0 ODI series sweep in the Caribbean was “special”, but Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh 50-overs captain, has been speaking to his team-mates about not getting too excited with the result. After all, as he says, “there was too much help for the spinners”, which won’t often be the case while on the road.”Any away series win is always special. Our series win in South Africa was massive [too]. But I told my team that although winning in West Indies was a fantastic achievement, this series win should not go to our heads,” Tamim told ESPNcricinfo. “It was held in conditions where there was too much help for the spinners. When we go overseas or even at home, you won’t have this kind of help. We have to face more difficult challenges going forward.Related

Bangladesh face leadership questions in Tests and T20Is

The ODI series win gave Bangladesh a fine sign-off on the tour, where they had lost both the Tests and T20Is 2-0. Tamim has now led Bangladesh to five consecutive ODI series wins – six in the World Cup Super League. The last of those have in South Africa and the West Indies, quite an achievement for a side that is notoriously mediocre away from the subcontinent. In fact, all their overseas ODI series wins over the years have only been in the West Indies, Zimbabwe and Kenya.Tamim, the Player of the Series for his tally of 117 runs, said that while the wins have been heartening, he was waiting for his main plan to stop working, and for Plan B to be brought out and executed.”I am figuring out my style, and what I want to do,” he said. “I have always said that it is a learning process for me. When I go to Ireland and Zimbabwe, I might have to face different challenges, right? If the way I plan things don’t work, how I execute Plan B [will determine if] I am growing as a captain.”It was challenging [after the Test and T20I defeats] but I didn’t have to work much on [the transition]. Everyone wanted to win. We thought we’d be more competitive in Tests and T20Is, though the result didn’t go our way. Everyone tried hard in those two formats but unfortunately it didn’t happen. So it worked within everyone that we have to win the ODI series, at least. The hunger was there in everyone, regardless of whether they played or not.”That Bangladesh won the ODIs despite missing stalwarts Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim [both absent because of personal reasons], as well as Mohammad Saifuddin and Yasir Ali [injured], was a positive sign. But Bangladesh’s spinners put together a great performance, picking up 19 wickets at 15.26 – their best average in a bilateral or triangular ODI series. What also stood out in Tamim’s view was Nurul Hasan’s batting in the middle order. Nurul, the wicketkeeper-batter, finished off two of the chases with scores of 20 not out and 32 not out.”Those two [Shakib and Mushfiqur] are key players for us in any format. They have done so well for the country, achieved so much. The team will get a bit of confidence playing without them. The other guys had the opportunity in their absence,” Tamim said. “Sohan [Nurul] took it with both hands. He played unbelievably well.”Apart from the bowlers, I have to say Sohan was the leading performer. He has put up a very strong case going forward.”Tamim himself made good starts but didn’t convert them into big ones, but it was in tough batting conditions, where 178 was the best first-innings total, by West Indies in the last game, and it took 48.3 overs for Bangladesh to finish the chase. Tamim had scores of 33, 50 not out and 34 in the series.”This was the sort of wicket where you had to cut out maximum shots, and focus on one or two shots only,” Tamim explained. “You cannot play shots to the merit of the ball. It was spinning a lot. It was keeping low. You just hope the ball will be there for you to score runs. Luckily we didn’t have to chase big scores. It was okay.”

Bigger talent than Kenny: Celtic could sign a star who’s "defying the odds"

Celtic turn their attention away from the Scottish Premiership this evening as they prepare to welcome Swiss giants Young Boys to Parkhead in the Champions League.

The Hoops are currently 23rd in the league phase and only one point above the teams chasing a spot in the play-off positions, which means that they need a win to ensure that they will remain on course to quality for the next stage.

Brendan Rodgers will hope that his side can kick on after they also progressed through to the next round of the SFA Cup last time out, beating Kilmarnock 2-1, thanks to goals from Callum McGregor and Daizen Maeda.

Celtic have enjoyed a terrific season across all competitions, as they are top of the Premiership, have already won the League Cup, and are still in the Champions League and the SFA Cup.

Given the team’s comfortable position in the Premiership, sitting 13 points clear of Rangers in second place, Rodgers has a chance to offer opportunities to young players to see if they have what it takes to make the step up, if he so wishes.

One young talent who has featured for the Scottish giants this month is Irish centre-forward Johnny Kenny, who recently returned from his loan with Shamrock Rovers.

Johnny Kenny's Celtic potential

Rodgers decided to include the striker in his first-team squad this month, after his loan with the Irish team expired at the end of last year, and he handed him a Premiership appearance against Ross County recently.

Kenny came off the bench for the final 17 minutes of the 4-1 win and had mixed success, missing a ‘big chance’ in front of goal and assisting Luke McCowan’s goal by bundling the ball towards the midfielder in the box.

The 21-year-old gem, who turns 22 this summer, was then an unused substitute in the 3-3 draw with Dundee and was not included in the squad that beat Kilmarnock 2-1 in the SFA Cup.

Kenny came back to Celtic after impressing during his time with Shamrock Rovers on loan in the 2024 Irish Premier Division, as well as in the UEFA Conference League.

The Hoops youngster scored five goals from 3.78 xG in six matches in the European competition, to go along with one ‘big chance’ created and one assist for his side.

As you can see in the table above, Kenny provided a decent goal threat for Shamrock Rovers in the Premier Division, but did still miss 14 ‘big chances’ in front of goal, which suggests that he was wasteful at times.

The right-footed forward will now be hoping to kick on and establish himself as a first-team regular for Celtic between now and the end of the season, but his long-term hopes of landing the number nine shirt could be damaged by the club’s interest in another Irish marksman.

Celtic's interest in Irish starlet

Earlier this month, The Sun reported that Celtic are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign St Patrick’s Athletic centre-forward Mason Melia in the January transfer window.

The report claimed that Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, along with Eintracht Frankfurt and Genk, have also shown an interest in the 17-year-old starlet, as they look to snap up the promising youngster.

Melia would be unable to join a British team, such as Spurs or the Hoops, until January of next year, as that is the next available transfer window after his 18th birthday, but that has not stopped the two clubs from wanting to get a deal wrapped up now.

They could agree a transfer for the St Patrick’s Athletic star this month and then keep tabs on his performances for the Irish outfit in their 2025 campaign, before integrating him into their squad next year.

The Sun added that Celtic are very keen on a swoop for the 17-year-old gem because they see him as a potential ‘future star’, and that is bad news for Kenny, as Melia could come in as an even bigger talent than the 21-year-old ace.

Why Mason Melia is an even bigger talent than Johnny Kenny

Firstly, the St Patrick’s Athletic ace is more than four years younger than Kenny and this means that he has far more time ahead of him to develop and hone his skills.

Despite his young age, Melia has emerged as a first-team option for his club, and manager Stephen Kenny claimed that the youngster is “defying the odds” with his involvement in the squad, whilst he also hailed the striker’s work ethic.

As you can see in the clip above, the teenage starlet became the youngest scorer in the club’s history at the age of 15 years and 132 days in the Leinster Senior Cup, finding the top corner with a terrific strike.

If you compare his form in the Premier Division for St Patrick’s Athletic to Kenny’s form in the 2023 campaign, when he was three years older than Melia is now, the Hoops target appears to be an even bigger talent.

As you can see in the table above, the young dynamo, who was 16 a lot of that season, caught the eye with more goals, fewer ‘big chances’ missed, and more duels won per match in comparison to Kenny.

This suggests that the potential is there for him to hold his own as a physical presence, given that he won 1.3 more battles per game on average, whilst also being more efficient in front of goal.

There is no telling how either of them will go on to develop, as young players can be hard to predict, but on the evidence of Melia’s performances at a much younger age than Kenny, it appears as though Celtic would be signing an even bigger talent.

ByDan Emery Jan 20, 2025

How they use that talent and how Rodgers would help him as a coach remains to be seen, but the latent potential is there for him to be an exciting signing, and one that could damage Kenny’s long-term prospects, for the Hoops if they can win the race for his signature.

Babar says Shaheen will be rested for at least two ODIs against Netherlands

“We’re looking long term at his fitness and health. We want him to be ready for the Asia Cup”

Danyal Rasool11-Aug-2022

Shaheen Shah Afridi is currently recovering from a knee injury•PCB

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has said the team is looking to manage Shaheen Shah Afridi’s “long-term workload and health” as he recovers from a knee injury, with the aim of getting him ready in time for the Asia Cup.”We’re taking a couple of doctors on the way to take care of Shaheen,” Babar said at a press conference before Pakistan’s departure for the Netherlands. “We’re looking long term at his fitness and health. We want him to play a game against Netherlands if he’s fit and be ready for the Asia Cup. Our combination is quite good. In T20s the middle order responded well to challenges.”With Hasan Ali dropped from the side, that opens the door for lesser experienced fast bowlers to make their mark in the Netherlands, especially as Babar believes the conditions on offer will be similar to what England throws up, and therefore presumably suitable to fast bowlers. Haris Rauf, Shahnawaz Dahani, Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim are all part of the travelling contingent, and expected to be heavily involved in the three ODIs.Related

Pakistan look to plug ODI holes against depleted Netherlands

There will be particular interest in who Pakistan pick as their opening bowling pair, an area where, Afridi’s reliable brilliance aside, Pakistan have been unsettled in the ODI format. Each of Rauf, Dahani and Wasim have taken the new ball at some point or another, and since the 2019 World Cup, so have Hasan Ali, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Amir and Usman Shinwari. Haris and Hasan, who have been tasked with this responsibility most regularly aside from Afridi, have the worst economy and strike rate with it. In Afridi’s absence, that will be a weakness Babar hopes to address properly.”Our fast-bowling bench strength is excellent,” he said. “They’ve now got an opportunity to showcase their skills. This is how you expand your pool. I support Hasan Ali because he’s a team man. Yes, he’s not in form, but it’s not like he has to prove anything. Domestic cricket is coming up. He’ll play that and make a strong comeback hopefully.”We have 11 trump cards. Each of them can be matchwinners on their day. I have faith in every one of them, whether batters of bowlers. I think the conditions will be similar to England. The weather will be cooler. We practiced with the air conditioning on indoors, perhaps that helps simulate the conditions! We couldn’t practice much because of the rains, but we got a practice match in, which gives you a good sense of conditions.”Babar also appeared to pour cold water on murmurs of a return to the side for veteran Shoaib Malik ahead of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, emphasising the importance of backing young players who had been assigned to replace him.”The team has been announced after discussions with everyone. We met with the coach and chief selector and did what was best for Pakistan. There are matches immediately after Netherlands, so it’s unlikely there will be time for changes.”When senior players leave the side, those replacing them need focus. Hafeez and Malik were huge players and we’ll miss them a lot, and players like Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah and Iftikhar need to fill their boots. We want to give them plenty of matches and confidence, and these players have performed. We’re also looking to utilise Shadab Khan’s batting, because batting depth is very useful in T20 cricket now.”We’re not going to just rest our senior players, we’ll play with a combination of senior and junior players. There are important Super League points at stake which we can’t lose. I’m going to the Netherlands for the first time, too. If things go badly after we field young players, we’ll cop criticism then, too. Everyone won’t be happy with our decisions, but we have to do what’s best for Pakistan cricket.”Babar, or indeed any of his team-mates, may want for nothing or need no introduction in Pakistan, but that is emphatically not true of other athletes in the country who happen to pursue a sport not called cricket. Babar paid rich tribute to Pakistan’s most successful athletes at the Commonwealth Games, where the country came away with a gold medal each in weightlifting and javelin throwing. He called on increased support to athletes across sports, bemoaning the facilities they enjoyed as being “not good enough”.”I was very proud to see Noah Dastagir and Arshad Nadeem win gold medals. There’s so much respect for how much hard work they put in. You cannot praise them enough. But you need to give them better facilities. I saw the conditions they were practicing in, and I think that was unacceptable. When you give the athletes better facilities, they’ll win many more gold medals.”

A dream for Salah & Diaz: Liverpool make bid for exciting young attacker

Away from the one loss next to their name this season in the Premier League, Liverpool have been near faultless in the top-flight under Arne Slot.

Indeed, the high-flying Reds sit at the very top of the division with a hefty 56 points accumulated from 23 games as both Arsenal and Nottingham Forest desperately attempt to catch up on 47 points each.

If all goes to plan from this point onwards, Slot’s men should cruise to a title success during their new manager’s very successful first campaign, with the Dutchman now looking ahead to the future – away from any silverware to come – with a new transfer target.

Liverpool submit offer for teenage star

As per the Daily Express, Liverpool have now submitted an offer to sign Red Star Belgrade starlet Andrija Maksimovic.

Aston Villa are also named as another interested party looking at the Serbian teenager, with Maksimovic’s agent Zoran Stojadinovic further elaborating that the attacking midfielder could go for a fee around the £17m mark.

Whilst this wouldn’t be a purchase for the here and now, this would still be an exciting pick up for the Reds to get done, with the 17-year-old a gung-ho style attacking midfielder that would slot into the free-flowing Liverpool side nicely alongside both Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz.

What Maksimovic could offer Liverpool

Already capped four times at a senior level for his nation, Maksimovic could well make this next big step in his career look effortless as well.

After all, the teen has played in seven Champions League clashes this season and not look fazed whatsoever by the glitz and glamour, with plenty of goals and assists coming his way in both the youth set-up at Red Star and in the first-team fold.

Amazingly, a sublime free-kick effort earlier in the campaign was Maksimovic’s first-ever senior strike for Red Star, with the promising Reds target now up to three goals and four assists overall for his Serbian employers from 23 clashes.

Maksimovic’s youth numbers for Red Star further reinforce why his price tag stands at such a steep £17m, with the 6-foot gem helping himself to a ridiculous 31 goals from 33 appearances, before then becoming a consistent starter up an age bracket.

Therefore, he could fit in superbly alongside both Salah and Diaz. The pair of them have been exceptional this term but this move could gift Slot’s men even more firepower, as the table-toppers are somewhat reliant on the dazzling magic of the Egyptian or Diaz as a lone striker.

Staggeringly, Salah has a combined goal and assist haul in the Premier League alone of 34, whilst Diaz also comes in at double digits at ten.

Looking at the table above, the goals and assists are spread out across the squad quite evenly, but there is a slight lack of contributions coming from the middle of the park with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai only on five for the campaign.

The Hungarian midfielder played in the number ten role last time out versus AFC Bournemouth, despite often being launched into clashes in a far deeper spot, with there a need perhaps for Slot to have more personnel to throw into games behind the lone striker.

Mohamed Salah celebrates with Luis Diaz

That’s where Maksimovic could come in handy to help out Salah and Diaz, with Liverpool also gaining another top youngster in the process who could be used as an impact face like Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones.

After all, Liverpool don’t need whole host of instant improvements this January, with this signing one that could go on to be an inspired purchase if everything goes to plan down the line.
