Worcestershire enforce follow-on but play abandoned early to end Division One ambitions

Ben Gibbon helped to enforce the follow-on before rain closed in•Andrew Miller
Glamorgan 295 (Gill 92, Byrom 67, Cook 51, Pennington 4-78, Gibbon 4-87) and 5 for 0 drew with Worcestershire 454 for 9 dec (Roderick 172*, Leach 87, Barnard 75, Pollock 54, van der Gugten 4-81) Glamorgan moved into the second promotion place in Division Two with this rain-affected draw against Worcestershire, ahead of their crunch match against main rivals Middlesex next week.Eight points each for the draw, along with four bonus points for Glamorgan and six for Worcestershire, took Glamorgan seven points ahead of Middlesex while Worcestershire may feel their promotion hopes have almost gone. There was only 55 minutes play possible before the rain came down in Cardiff, in which time Glamorgan added an extra batting bonus point and got within sight of a second while attempting to save the follow-on, before losing their final wicket five runs short of the first target and ten runs short of the second. That allowed Ben Gibbon and Dillon Pennington to end the Glamorgan first innings with four wickets apiece, while Glamorgan’s Chris Cooke moved onto an unbeaten half-century.Worcestershire’s unlikely aim at the start of play was to claim 12 wickets in the day, to get the win which would have put them right back in the promotion race. And though they were able to enforce the follow-on to keep that dream alive, Glamorgan openers David Lloyd and Ed Byrom only had to survive nine balls before the rain came down and the game was abandoned early afternoon.

Chahar, who is part of India’s World Cup reserves, will be replaced by Washington Sundar for the South Africa series

Deepak Chahar will miss the final two ODIs against South Africa•BCCI
In another ill-timed fitness issue for India, Deepak Chahar has been ruled out of the final two ODIs against South Africa with a stiff back. Spin-bowling allrounder Washington Sundar was brought in as a replacement.A BCCI media release said Chahar would head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where he would be monitored by the medical team. The extent of the injury or the timeline for recovery is yet to be ascertained. Chahar had returned to competitive cricket only in mid-August, after a six-month injury break that included back trouble. His issue gains greater significance given India play their first T20 World Cup game in Australia on October 23, and have already lost pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to injury. They are yet to name a replacement for Bumrah, but Chahar was one of two fast bowlers named in the reserves, along with Mohammed Shami.Chahar was set to fly to Australia at the end of the South Africa series along with other reserve players. The World Cup squad has already flown out, to Perth, for a short training camp. They currently have seamers Chetan Sakariya and Mukesh Choudhary with them as net bowlers in Perth, where they will be based over the next week or so before travelling to Brisbane for warm-up fixtures against Australia and New Zealand. The selectors are likely to announce Bumrah’s replacement, widely tipped to be Shami, over the next two days. Shami is currently undergoing post-Covid rehab in Bengaluru, where he is believed to have undergone mandated cardiovascular tests before being passed fit. This injury is the latest setback for Chahar this year. First, he tore a quadricep muscle during India’s T20Is against West Indies in February. Then, he picked up a back issue while undergoing rehab for the quad injury at the NCA. He missed the IPL that followed and did not play again until India’s tour of Zimbabwe in August.Washington himself is working his way back to full match fitness. He will make a return to competitive cricket after two months, having injured his shoulder during his stint with English county side Lancashire in August. He had to drop out of the Zimbabwe series due to that injury, and last played for India in the West Indies series in February, when he picked up a hamstring strain. During the IPL, he had issues with a split webbing. He had also caught Covid-19 this year.India trail South Africa in the ODIs 1-0, so both remaining games are must-win for them. Chahar had sat out the first ODI, in Lucknow, as well. The second and third ODIs will be played in Ranchi and Delhi on Sunday and Tuesday respectively. Washington is the second spin bowling allrounder in the squad, alongside the uncapped Shahbaz Ahmed.Updated India ODI squad: Shikhar Dhawan (capt), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer (vice-capt), Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar

It’s no secret that Chelsea have been looking to sign another striker alongside Nicolas Jackson since the summer, with plenty of links to some of the best forwards on the continent, notably the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak.
Enzo Maresca has clearly shown he likes Jackson, often praising his contributions in games aside from just his goal tally.
Chelsea'sNicolasJacksonreacts after sustaining an injury
However, goals have dried up for the Senegal international, despite scoring nine in 23 games so far this season, Jackson hasn’t found the net since the middle of December, now going eight games without a goal.
The likes of Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu have been given chances up front from the bench to replace Jackson in recent weeks.
But, it is clear the Blues are missing a different striker profile who can challenge Jackson but also offer some different attributes, especially extra box threat and aerial presence.
Why Chelsea wanted Alexander Isak
One man who is certainly in red-hot form in the Premier League this season is Newcastle striker, Isak, who has made 27 appearances so far this season, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists.
In short, he’s a marvel and is proving himself against some of the best too. The 6 foot 4 Sweden international just had one of his most important performances in England, making a mockery of William Saliba and Gabriel on his way to leading Newcastle to the EFL Cup final with a 2-0 victory against Arsenal at St James’ Park.
Isak is perhaps one of the most complete forwards in the world, offering the height and presence in the box that is desired, whilst also being good in other phases, able to drop in and help link play, and then provide the finishing touch and score the important goals.
Chelsea may have sold their own Isak
Chelsea may well have had their very own answer to Isak, but he was sold back in 2021, joining Roma for a fee of around £34m. He is now finding his feet again in Serie A with AC Milan.
Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakreacts
That player was Tammy Abraham who made 82 appearances in the Chelsea first team once he broke in through the academy system, scoring 30 goals, providing nine assists and totalling 4,569 minutes played.
Much like Isak, Abraham is coincidentally also 6 foot 4, has the technical quality despite his height to drop and link play, and has demonstrated a high level of finishing in the past.

When comparing the underlying numbers of the two strikers this season, Abraham is actually providing even more box threat with his aerial presence, winning 2.18 aerial duels per 90.
He also ranks very closely to Isak in terms of clinical finishing with a 0.22 goals/shot ratio, just 0.01 less than Isak.
Abraham was labelled as “£60m striker” by Jürgen Klopp back in 2019 when he was playing for Chelsea, and ironically, he is the type of striker who could at least provide something different to Jackson currently, which is exactly what the Blues are crying out for.
Whilst the AC Milan striker clearly isn’t at the same level as the Swede, Abraham would clearly be a useful tool for Maresca this season at Chelsea, which begs the question. Did the Blues cash in on the English striker too soon? The answer to that question, quite possibly, is yes.

Arsenal are seriously weighing up a transfer alternative to Newcastle United star Alexander Isak who they are convinced will be much cheaper, with the attacker having also enjoyed an excellent 2024/2025 campaign thus far.
Arsenal want Alexander Isak but Newcastle unlikely to sell
The Gunners are reliably reported admirers of Isak, and manager Mikel Arteta in particular is believed to be a real fan.

The Gunners are still in the market for a centre-forward.

Reports as far back as May last year claimed Isak is Arteta’s dream signing for Arsenal, and his admiration for the superstar Premier League striker doesn’t appear to have waned in the slightest.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein stated this month that Isak is top of Arteta’s transfer wishlist, but Eddie Howe won’t be in any hurry to green-light the sale of his key player, even if those around Arsenal believe he is perfect for the club’s system.

“I’ve always said that Alexander Isak is perfect for Arsenal. He would be at the top of my list of new forwards if he were to become available,” said Arsenal correspondent Charles Watts in late 2024.
“He’s long been mentioned as a potential target, but I don’t believe there have ever been any talks or anything like that.
“The word coming out of Newcastle has always been that Isak has not been for sale and given the money it would take to change that stance, Arsenal have focused attention elsewhere, like on Benjamin Sesko for example. I would love to see Arsenal at least try and have a conversation about a potential move.
Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle
“The issue is, however, that Isak’s current deal does not run out until 2028, so Newcastle are still in a very strong position. It would still take huge money to prize him away from St James’ Park.”
The list of potential alternatives to Isak is interesting, with reports claiming Arsenal are still very much targeting RB Leipzig’s Sesko for the summer window after their hopes of a deal faded in January.
As well as the Slovenia international starlet, it is now believed that Eintracht Frankfurt newbie Hugo Ekitiké is on their list of targets.
Arsenal "majorly considering" Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike
According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are “majorly considering” Ekitike as a cheaper alternative to Isak, following the Frenchman’s brilliant 24/25 campaign where he’s managed 17 goals in all competitions thus far.
Ekitike was on the fringes of PSG’s first-team before making an initial loan move to Frankfurt in 2024, with the Bundesliga side then opting to make his transfer permanent last summer.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Hugo Ekitike in training.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed a new lease of life in Germany, so much so that his form is now attracting serious interest from both Arsenal and London rivals Chelsea. However, as expected, Ekitike’s club are in no rush to sell him, and will demand a set fee of £60 million to let the forward go before next season.
Interestingly, West Ham were heavily linked with a summer deadline day move for Ekitike in 2023, so this isn’t the first time he’s garnered attention from English clubs.
“There is something very special about him,” said former Reims boss Oscar Garcia. “He’s young, and he has the quality to become a very good player. He’s a young man with a lot of quality but also a lot to improve on, but he works hard in training.”

Moxon’s successor named after torrid year as Gough stays on as Director of Cricket

Stephen Vaughan, the new CEO of Yorkshire CCC•Yorkshire CCC
Yorkshire have appointed as their new chief executive Stephen Vaughan, the former CEO of Wasps Group – the premiership rugby club that went into administration last month – while confirming that Darren Gough will stay on as permanent director of cricket, following their relegation to Division Two of the County Championship.Vaughan’s role will officially begin on November 7, almost exactly a year on from the resignation of his predecessor, Mark Arthur, who stood down at the height of the club’s racism scandal, prior to Azeem Rafiq’s explosive testimony at the DCMS parliamentary hearing at which he had also been due to give evidence. In his three-year stint at Wasps, Vaughan went from CEO of sports business in August 2019 to becoming Group Chief Executive in 2020, but in October he was one of 167 players, coaches and staff made redundant following the collapse of the parent company, Wasps Holdings Ltd. Prior to that, he had been managing director of Thomas Cook London 2012, where he led the company’s involvement with the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, and seven years at Gloucester Rugby.During his time at Wasps, Vaughan was responsible for the rollout of a comprehensive Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) strategy, a trait that made him attractive to Yorkshire as they seek to rebuild the club’s reputation following a damaging two years.”Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of the most iconic sporting institutions in the world and it’s truly an honour to take up this position,” Vaughan said. “Without shying away from the significant challenges we have faced over the past year, there are many reasons to be optimistic about the future, both on and off the pitch. I had a number of offers, but the opportunity to lead this club back to the forefront of English Cricket and realise our full potential was very attractive.”The club is hugely important in the region with a massive fan base of loyal Members who want to see us get back to where we should be. Working alongside the newly installed Board I am determined to deliver sporting success at Headingley and produce exceptional results, underpinned by robust commercial foundations and our vision to make Yorkshire Cricket a place for everyone.Lord Kamlesh Patel, Yorkshire’s chair, added: “We’re delighted to welcome Stephen to the club as the outstanding candidate in a highly talented field. With years of knowledge and experience working across various disciplines within sport he will bring a huge amount of expertise to Yorkshire County Cricket Club. His proven track record and business acumen will be vital to our future success.”Stephen’s openness in dealing with challenging conditions at Wasps in the wake of Covid demonstrates the strength of character that will be vital to the ongoing transformation of the club. I look forward to working with him as we continue on our rebuilding journey”.Gough, meanwhile, has been confirmed as Yorkshire’s full-time director of cricket, having stepped into the role last year following the departure of Martyn Moxon. His first season in charge was a disappointment, however, as Yorkshire were relegated on the final day of the season following Warwickshire’s thrilling victory over Hampshire.”I have a long-established connection to the club and am very happy to be part of our future by signing a permanent contract,” Gough said. “We were all disappointed with the conclusion of the men’s XI season but we are determined to get back to the top as soon as possible and regain our Division One status.”There is much to be optimistic about, not least the exceptional young talent coming through, and I am excited about the signings we have made to improve the team. The hard work starts through the winter, and I am looking forward to working together with Ottis and the coaching team in the years ahead to bring success on the cricket field back to Yorkshire.”
