Newcastle could unleash their own Nwaneri who’s "one of the best" prospects

This could be a significant season for Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s side could be cup champions this time next month, into the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. They have also set up a last-16 tie with Brighton in the FA Cup, with Manchester’s two behemoths the only remaining teams from the Premier League’s recognised ‘big six.’

That term is increasingly outmoded, with Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League in 2022/23, Aston Villa following their trail last term and Nottingham Forest currently ensconced in third, 18 points above Man United.

Newcastle definitely have a team capable of hitting huge heights, no longer punching above their weight but recognised as a fear-inducing opponent.

And alongside the exploits of the first team, the Magpies youth fold is making exciting progress too.

Newcastle's new-found academy success

Homemade superstars were a rarity on Tyneside before Howe and PIF came along. Six years ago, under the tyrannical rule of Mike Ashley, Newcastle’s academy was observed to be in a ‘desperate state’, but that has now changed.

Mike Ashley at Newcastle United.

Sean Longstaff was established and Elliott Anderson was coming through when everything changed in 2021, but the shift at youth level has since gone from strength to strength,

The infrastructure has been revamped, with now-former sporting director Dan Ashworth appointing 13 new academy staff members to rewrite the narrative about the club’s production line.

Now, there’s much to be excited about as the system blossoms as a whole. Lewis Miley is a fiercely exciting talent, while Anderson was sold to Nottingham Forest last summer for £35m. Yankuba Minteh also joined Brighton in a £30m deal to placate PSR.

Newcastle’s U21s sit 14th in the Premier League 2, having finished 22nd last term and achieved promotion the year before that. This is incremental progress.

Not just promoting from the city, United are signing exciting up-and-comers to suffuse the formative ranks with a golden glow. Let’s have a look at a young forward who might just be the pick of the bunch.

Howe may have "one of the best prospects in the world"

St. James’ Park has appealed to some of the most exciting senior stars in England – Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes et al., but the same can be said for those at the bottom of the pack.

Vakhtang Salia is one of the most exciting Georgian players to emerge since Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and it’s a testament to Newcastle’s progress that he opted for Howe’s team last year despite interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Aged 17, Salia has already posted seven goals and two assists across 39 senior appearances for Dinamo Tbilisi, with journalist Bence Bocsak duly describing him as an “elite talent.”

A mobile and threatening forward, the teenager has yet to find his best position but is routinely deployed on the left flank. He could provide relief across the frontline after joining United in August when he turns 18.

Who knows, with such high stock, Salia could assert himself as one of the most talented youngsters in the Premier League next season, maybe even rivalling Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri.

A true prodigy, 17-year-old Nwaneri has made waves at Arsenal over the past several years, becoming the youngest player in Premier League history when introduced against Brentford in September 2022 (aged 15 years and 181 days), and properly breaking into Mikel Arteta’s plans this year.

A right-sided player, he’s scored seven times across 24 matches, instrumental in keeping the Gunners afloat with talisman Bukayo Saka sidelined for over a month and not expected to return any time soon.

Development isn’t linear but Salia is doing all that he can in his homeland, sharpening his tools to a keen edge before crossing over to Newcastle. With a natural-born goalscoring ability and dynamism that sees him place across different roles, Howe might just find that he can introduce a rival to Arsenal’s talk-of-the-town talent.

In The Pipeline

Journalist Graeme Bailey has hailed Salia as “one of the best teenage prospects in the world,” and when he alights in Newcastle later this year, there’s every chance that he could make a fast start and show Howe that he’s unearthed a rising star just as bright as Nwaneri.

McSweeney and Brown shine as Heat win run-fest

Sixers fall narrowly short despite Vince, Silk, Kerr cameos

AAP01-Jan-2023

Josh Brown and Nathan McSweeney put up a stand of 73 off 33 balls•Getty Images

Josh Brown makes his own bats and he can wield them too after lighting up the Gabba to inspire the Brisbane Heat’s 15-run win over the Sydney Sixers with a whirlwind half-century.The match had a sensational finish when Heat allrounder Michael Neser caught Sixers’ Jordan Silk (41 off 23 balls) in the 19th over just inside the boundary rope, threw it in the air, went outside the field of play and then tossed it up again while airborne. He then completed the catch inside the boundary rope – all within the rules – as Sixers got close to achieving a BBL record run chase. The 29-year-old Brown earlier produced his whirlwind innings to score 62 off just 23 balls in the Heat’s 224 for 5.Sixers made a gallant response in their pursuit on a night of pure batting entertainment but fell short to be all out from the final delivery. What is a fair catch?

33.2.1 A catch will be fair only if, in every case, either the ball, at any time, or any fielder in contact with the ball, is not grounded beyond the boundary before the catch is completed.
33.2.2 Furthermore, a catch will be fair if:
33.2.2.4 a fielder catches the ball after it has crossed the boundary in the air, provided that the conditions in 33.2.1 are met.
19.5.2 A fielder who is not in contact with the ground is considered to be grounded beyond the boundary if his/her final contact with the ground, before his/her first contact with the ball after it has been delivered by the bowler, was not entirely within the boundary.

Heat needed something special to get their season moving and Brown provided it in front of 23,689 fans while using a Cooper Cricket bat. He brought up his fifty in just 19 deliveries, the equal fifth fastest in Heat history in just his second BBL game.Brown cleared the boundary six times with an assortment of scintillating strokes, including one lofted cover drive off Jackson Bird that had class written all over it. He works with Cooper Cricket founder Rod Grey. He has crafted hundreds of Cooper bats himself, and repaired thousands.”That is my full-time job outside of cricket,” Brown told Fox Cricket after his knock. “I make my own bats. It is pretty fun I do most of the repairs for the [Heat] boys.”Brown has been in scintillating form for his Brisbane club side Norths this season, but said he didn’t know he was any good at cricket until he was 24. T20 franchises around the world will no doubt be making further enquiries about him. “I just found my new favourite player,” Adam Gilchrist said in commentary.Allrounder Nathan McSweeney (84 off 51 balls) kept Brown’s momentum going with a superbly paced maiden BBL half-century to lift the Heat to their best score in their BBL history.Sixers openers Josh Philippe and James Vince took a club record 54 runs off the four overs of the power play in pursuit. Silk and allrounder Hayden Kerr added 54 in 26 balls for the sixth wicket but the brilliant stumping of Kerr by Jimmy Peirson off spinner Matt Kuhnemann proved crucial.Neser’s catch to dismiss Silk was the decisive moment in the run chase after he took 3 for 41 with the ball.

He’d be amazing for Igamane: Rangers in talks to hire "magnificent" manager

Philippe Clement is no longer the manager of Glasgow Rangers. Although inevitable, it felt as though the Belgian should have been relieved of his duties months ago, especially after a dismal start to the season at Ibrox.

The Premiership title race was all but over by the time Santa was delivering presents. The 3-0 win over the Parkhead side at the start of the year showed signs of recovery, but in the club’s very next game, they drew 3-3 with Hibs, surrendering a two-goal lead.

The Scottish Cup defeat to Championship side Queen’s Park was the nail in the coffin and, in truth, Clement should have walked after that. Keeping him as manager was prolonging the malaise around Ibrox.

Clement, Tavernier

At the time of writing, the Light Blues have lost five and drawn five of their 27 league games thus far. This sort of form will never be good enough to claim the domestic title, especially with how impressive Celtic have been.

It appears that big changes could occur at the club in the coming months, as 49ers Enterprises looks set to complete a takeover of Rangers, which could revitalise the club—both on and off the field.

While it looks like an interim boss will be appointed until the summer, the next permanent manager must be the right one, otherwise the club will forever be going around in circles.

Might there already be a name in the running for the vacant role already?

The latest on Rangers' hunt for a new manager

Naturally, there will be plenty of names thrown about surrounding the manager’s job at Ibrox, with some familiar faces likely to be mentioned by the media.

Eurosport contributor and journalist Luca Chianti has given an update, however, saying on X: “Rangers board will move quickly to appointment new manager with Steven Gerrard preferred by board and in talks, also concurrent discussions with ex Everton manager Sean Dyche.”

Dyche was sacked by Everton a few weeks ago following an underwhelming start to the 2024/25 season which left the Toffees in danger of relegation.

Nathan Patterson, Steven Gerrard

His style of play isn’t something many of the Ibrox faithful would want to see in Glasgow, rather someone who prefers a more attacking philosophy indeed.

Gerrard, on the other hand, could be a solid candidate, regardless of his previous two managerial roles ending in failure.

He lasted less than a year at Aston Villa, while his spell in the Middle East came to an end in January, leaving Saudi outfit Al-Ettifaq after just 18 months in charge.

While not perfect, Gerrard brought Rangers from the doldrums to the summit of Scottish football in just three years. He managed to get the best out of a talented squad of players while performing miracles in Europe, restoring pride to the Gers.

It is no secret that the former Liverpool icon is looked highly upon by the supporters due to the part he played at the club. Could a second spell in Glasgow get the Gers going again? Or is it a step too far?

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers statistics

Gerrard inherited a torrid squad when he took over in May 2018 and, quite naturally, it was going to take time for him to imprint his vision on the team.

The Light Blues failed to win a trophy during his first two seasons, although they reached the League Cup final in 2019, while also securing three wins against Celtic, the most of any manager since Walter Smith.

The 2020/21 campaign was his crowning glory, leading the team to an undefeated Premiership season which saw the club claim their first league title in a decade.

So impressive was this achievement, that even Sir Alex Ferguson hailed it as “magnificent” and it was down to the talents of several players, including Alfredo Morelos.

In the current Rangers squad, there is a player who has shown a remarkable likeness to the former Gers talisman. Hamza Igamane has a long way to go to match the numbers Morelos notched at Ibrox, but with the right coaching, anything is possible.

How Gerrard could bring the best out of Hamza Igamane

During his time working under Gerrard, Morelos went from a bustling out-and-out centre-forward to one who could drop deep and link up well with others around him despite not sacrificing his predatory instincts inside the penalty area.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Indeed, Morelos played 158 matches for Gerrard at Rangers. During that time, he scored an impressive tally of 83 goals while grabbing 36 assists.

This works out as a goal every 1.9 games, and it is no wonder they went on to win the league title in 2020/21.

Alfredo Morelos

Igamane has certainly been one of the few bright sparks for the Gers this season, despite the poor results. Like Morelos, the Moroccan youngster seems to come alive when the Europa League anthem is played, scoring four goals in the competition from just four starts.

One came against Tottenham Hotspur, while the striker registered a goal every 91 minutes in Europe’s secondary competition.

Morelos is the club-record goalscorer in Europe for Rangers, netting 29 goals in 63 games for the Light Blues. If Igamane remains at the club and pushes on from this solid campaign, he has a chance to potentially break this.

Gerrard would bring the best out in him, that’s for certain. Clement failed to truly showcase a proper style of play during his time in charge, often leaving the main striker isolated in several games.

On the flip side, the Englishman tends to use a 4-3-3 system which brings the best out of a front three. During the 2020/21 season, Morelos was often flanked by Ryan Kent and either Ianis Hagi or Joe Aribo, two players who created chances aplenty for him.

Hagi is still at the club, while Gerrard could utilise the talents of Oscar Cortes, Nedim Bajrami and Ross McCausland similarly.

The board have got to look ahead to the future. The 44-year-old has achieved success in Glasgow before and there is no reason why he couldn’t do so again.

After Clement's sacking: Rangers must also get rid of £16k-p/w flop

Rangers look like they are on the cusp of a takeover…

O Tricolor gaúcho foi o último time do pentacampeão do mundo antes do Furacão.

Jadeja puts troubled knee to Ranji test as Australia series looms

The allrounder says he will “go slowly” with his bowling workload in his comeback for Saurashtra against Tamil Nadu

Srinidhi Ramanujam23-Jan-20230:43

Jadeja trains in Chennai ahead of Saurashtra’s Ranji game

Saurashtra’s nets session on Monday gave a clear picture of Ravindra Jadeja’s determination to get back on the field. In a practice session that spanned over three hours and 20 minutes, Jadeja was one of only two players to have an extended hit at the nets. This was after he was done with his stretching and fielding drills at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and then a round of batting and bowling at the nets. In between, he was also seen giving pep talks, initially with the team in a huddle and then with individual players.Jadeja is returning to competitive cricket after a gap of nearly five months after injuring his knee during the Asia Cup last September and is set to lead Saurashtra in their last group game in the Ranji Trophy, with Cheteshwar Pujara and regular captain Jaydev Unadkat rested.Related

Suryakumar and Kishan in India's Test squad to face Australia

Jadeja undergoes surgery for injured right knee, hopes to start rehab soon

Both are understood to have been advised rest by the BCCI ahead of the Test series against Australia, which begins in Nagpur on February 9. Both players are part of the India squad for the first two Tests of the four-match series. Both Pujara and Unadkat, as well as Jadeja, will be part of India’s preparatory camp in Nagpur starting February 2.Jadeja’s inclusion in the 17-man squad is subject to proving his match fitness. He could not have asked for a better place for his competitive return than his home in the IPL, Chennai, where Saurashtra will take on Tamil Nadu starting Tuesday.Given that the last time he played a first-class game was the fifth Test against England in Birmingham last July, Jadeja is looking to get game-time under his belt before joining the India camp.”I’m almost ready,” he said with a wide smile when asked about his fitness. “I was at the NCA [National Cricket Academy] for 20 days, doing batting and bowling, but the match scenario is different. I wanted to play one game before the Australia series, that’s why I am here. Hopefully, I will be fully recovered to play the first Test.”Jadeja underwent surgery for a ligament tear in September 2022, and his planned comeback didn’t materialise when he was ruled out of the tour of Bangladesh in December, having initially been selected in both the ODI and Test squads.Jadeja: ‘I will go slowly [when I’m bowling against Tamil Nadu]. Have to see how my leg is feeling and then I will see’•PTI

As of Monday, he wasn’t feeling any discomfort in his knee, but he indicated he wouldn’t be taking on a full bowling workload in the match against Tamil Nadu.”After five months, if you play a competitive game, you don’t feel confident initially,” he said. “But as you progress, you will get better and better.”Injuries are part of the sport. In any sport, if you get injured, you have to start from scratch. Same thing in cricket. I was out of action for five months, so again I have to build my fitness first and then slowly, once I get fit and once I regain my confidence, then definitely I will work on my skills and get better day by day.”While batting in the nets, Jadeja copped a blow to the arm from the side-arm thrower and briefly looked discomfited. However, he continued to bat before coming back to bowl.Speaking about the setbacks he has faced on the road to his comeback from injury, he said: “You feel bad, nobody wants to get injured in the middle of your big season.”It’s a part of the game. You have to keep that in mind, and you have to prepare for it. Can’t do anything. There is no guarantee that nobody would get injured while playing cricket. It’s nice now, coming good. Day by day, I am getting that confidence.”I will go slowly [when I’m bowling]. Have to see how my leg is feeling and then I will see.”During his time away from cricket, Jadeja was busy campaigning for his wife in the Gujarat assembly elections. He said he mostly switched off from cricket during this period.”Fortunately, I was busy with some other things,” he said. “My full focus was there. It helped me a lot. I was also not thinking too much about cricket. Those initial three months after I got injured and got done with my surgery, I was busy with some election things. That helped me a lot. I wasn’t really watching [India] matches. But a few games I did see.”But at the moment, he is “very excited, looking forward to this game. Hopefully, it comes good as a team and as an individual.”

Leeds want to sign ex-Championship star who "terrifies defenders" for free

Leeds United are interested in signing a former Championship star in a cut-price transfer by the 49ers Enterprises.

Leeds transfer rumours as 49ers plan for summer

Even though the 49ers Enterprises are looking to expand their network of clubs by agreeing a deal in principle to take over at Rangers, there is still plenty of work going on behind the scenes at Elland Road.

The Whites, under Daniel Farke, are top of the second tier with 11 games to go and are five points clear of third-place Burnley. A 1-1 draw at home to West Brom ended a run of five successive Championship wins, with a trip to Portsmouth on Sunday lunchtime next on the agenda.

Away from the pitch, Leeds are already being linked with a number of potential targets for the summer, where they hope they’ll be preparing for a Premier League campaign.

A plethora have names have been linked with moves to Elland Road, including Celtic’s Nicolas Kuhn and Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale, but there is progress being made on outgoings. A deal has been agreed for defender Rasmus Kristensen to make his loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt permanent, with Leeds set to bring in an initial £5m.

After Kristensen, Leeds have also held talks over a move away or Jack Harrison, who could return to the MLS, whereas Pascal Struijk is wanted by Champions League outfit Feyenoord.

Leeds interested in signing ex-Championship star for free

According to Africa Foot, Leeds are once again interested in signing Osayi-Samuel, and this time, they may not have to pay a penny.

The 27-year-old’s contract with the Turkish giants is set to expire in the summer, with Leeds and Fulham keen on the versatile right-back’s services.

However, it is Premier League side Crystal Palace who are acting on their interest, tabling a four-year contract to Osayi-Samuel worth £72,500-a-week.

During his time in England with QPR, Osayi-Samuel tended to play in a more advanced role and came in for praise from Mark Warburton, with the former R’s boss hailing the player in 2020.

“I thought he was very, very good. If you remember Bristol City away earlier in the season he gave the full-back a torrid time. He’s been very good in spells in games but today he was consistent from the first whistle to the 75th minute.

“I’m not sure many teams have that blistering pace. As long as he knows how to use it and that’s the key for him learning the game. He’s working so hard. He’s got that sheer pace which terrifies defenders and when he uses it wisely like he did today he looks a real handful.”

Leeds may be waiting on securing promotion before making their move for Osayi-Samuel, however, with Palace tabling an offer, they could be pipped to a deal.
