USWNT player ratings vs Netherlands: Lindsey Horan saves the day as Vlatko Andonovski gets it all wrong in World Cup final rematch

The U.S. was outplayed for long stretches in Wellington, but did just enough to salvage a very important point

If the United States women's national team does go on to win its World Cup group, they'll have Danielle van de Donk to thank. The Netherlands star was the player that woke up Lindsey Horan, who showed the rest of the world what happens when she plays angry.

One bad tackle, one half-hearted apology and one Horan goal later, the U.S. salvaged a point. They may or may not have deserved it, but they have it nonetheless, as they escaped with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in their second group-stage game in New Zealand. That draw was earned despite several questionable decisions from head coach Vlatko Andonovski, who used just one of his substitutions despite seeing his side frequently overrun by the Dutch.

Horan was the hero, heading home a fantastic cross from that one substitute, Rose Lavelle, in the second half after several prolonged spells of Dutch dominance. Their goal in the first half, off the foot of Jill Roord, was totally deserved and, for some time, it looked like it would be enough for them to seal a historic win over the team that took them down back in the 2019 World Cup final.

It wasn't, and the USWNT can have Horan, and Van de Donk, to thank. The USWNT's captain provided the goal needed to get something from this game, ensuring that both sides will have everything to play for in their final group-stage games.

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Alyssa Naeher (5/10):

One shot on target, one goal for the Netherlands and that was that. A tough one for Naeher, who may have been screened on the play.

    Crystal Dunn (6/10):

The sequence leading to the Netherlands goal was a big mess for Dunn, who lost her balance and never recovered. Was pretty good other than that as she made several big tackles, making that one sequence even more frustrating.

    Naomi Girma (7/10):

It's insane how composed she is at her age. Facing one of the world's best teams, Girma was steady as can be, which is to be expected at this point, crazily enough.

    Julie Ertz (7/10):

Several key blocks down the stretch for the veteran, who started once again in central defense. Will that be her position going forward? Who knows, but this was another good outing with her in defense.

    Emily Fox (6/10):

Not her best game, but not her worst either. Wasn't crisp enough to make anything happen in the attacking end aside from one solid cross.

    Midfield

    Andi Sullivan (4/10):

Totally at fault for the first goal. Was late and then compounded her mistake by trying to make a hero tackle to leave the defense exposed. Couldn't do much of anything to stop the Netherlands as their midfield did whatever they wanted for much of the game.

    Lindsey Horan (7/10):

Don't make her angry. Was having a pretty average game until Van de Donk took her out. That moment woke her up, and her header just a few seconds later couldn't have been bigger from the USWNT captain.

    Savannah DeMelo (6/10):

Wasn't bad in her 45 minutes, but was definitely a victim of the physicality that went unchecked. Was fouled over and over again, leading to some scrappiness late in the first half, making her a card waiting to happen before her substitution.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Trinity Rodman (6/10):

Was the USWNT's best attacker early on, as she terrorized the Netherlands backline right up until their goal. Totally tired out by the end but was left on for some reason.

    Alex Morgan (6/10):

Did a lot of the little things but couldn't quite find the big one. Put the ball in the back of the net to seemingly make it 2-1 but was correctly deemed offside.

    Sophia Smith (6/10):

Invisible in the first half, but much better in the second as she created several moments of danger. Compared to her World Cup debut, this will have felt like a clunker as she never really got a chance at goal.

    Subs & Manager

    Rose Lavelle (7/10):

The USWNT needed a bunch of changes at the half, but Lavelle was the only one that came. As it turns out, she was the one to create the goal, assisting Horan after already turning the tide a bit after the Netherlands' very good first half.

    Vlatko Andonovski (3/10):

Questionable line up, exposed tactics and only one sub? Hard to understand what the USWNT head coach was doing here.

Al-Nassr need Cristiano Ronaldo back as soon as possible! Saudi Pro League winners and losers as Portuguese superstar misses opening-day defeat while Roberto Firmino sets down an early marker

Without the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Al-Nassr lost to Al-Ettifaq on Monday, but other new arrivals enjoyed strong Pro League debuts

Following the influx of a number of global superstars over the past couple of months, the new Saudi Pro League season got under way this past weekend. Never has excitement been higher around a division that, while regularly competitive, has previously made little impact on fans globally, with supporters keen to see some of the new-look teams in action.

It was an opening round to forget, however, for Al-Nassr, who were beaten 2-1 by Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq on Monday. Without captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who suffered a minor injury in the final of the Arab Club Champions Cup just 48 hours earlier, Luis Castro's side saw their hopes of making a winning start to their title bid evaporate, despite taking an early lead through Sadio Mane.

The result leaves Al-Nassr towards the bottom of the early table, but the same can't be said for their presumed title rivals. Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli all made winning starts, with some of the recent foreign imports making immediate impacts for their new clubs.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the first round of Saudi Pro League action…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Roberto Firmino

Roberto Firmino was a free agent following his departure from Liverpool, and as such promises to be one of the bargain signings of the Saudi Pro League off-season, especially if he can maintain the heroics of his league debut for Al-Ahli.

The Brazil international netted a hat-trick to secure a 3-1 win over Al-Hazm on Thursday, becoming just the second player in club history to net a treble on their debut, following in the footsteps of Omar Al Somah, who did so in 2014.

The hat-trick wasn't the most stunning of Firmino's career as all three strikes came from within the six-yard box, but he won't have cared, and neither will Al-Ahli's boisterous supporters, who best get used to seeing their new captain's karate-kick celebration.

A shout out to those fans, too, who created a superb atmosphere as they celebrated their return to the top-flight after promotion last season. Firmino spoke of the "goosebumps" they gave him ahead of kick-off, and the Al-Ahli fans did not let up throughout the whole game.

  • LOSER: Edouard Mendy

It wasn't all good news for Al-Ahli, though, as new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy suffered a debut to forget after gifting Al-Hazm a way back into the match with a fatal error.

With his side leading 2-0 following an early double from Firmino, the ex-Chelsea goalkeeper looked to play out from the back, only to fire a pass into the feet of opposition forward Vinicius Barbosa, who proceeded to lob the ball back over Mendy's head and into the net.

It's not the first time we have seen the Senegal international make that kind of error over the past year o so, and perhaps illustrates why he lost the No.1 role at Stamford Bridge before his summer departure.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Malcom

Firmino wasn't the only Brazilian new arrival to walk away from their Pro League debut with the match ball, as ex-Barcelona forward Malcom also netted a treble to guide Al-Hilal to victory over Abha.

Eyebrows were raised when Al-Hilal agreed to a fee of up to €60 million (£52m/$65.5m) to sign Malcom from Zenit St. Petersburg, but if Monday's performance is anything to go by, then the 26-year-old could yet emerge as a star of the 2023-24 campaign.

Amid a number of disappointing displays from his team-mates, Malcom was electric, with his third goal the pick of the bunch as he smashed a bouncing ball across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.

With Neymar looking set to join him in the Al-Hilal ranks in the coming days, Jorge Jesus is building a Brazilian-based attack that will strike plenty of fear into opposition defenders.

    WINNER: Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard has arrived at Al-Ettifaq with a point to prove. After the disappointing end to his time in charge of Aston Villa, the ex-Liverpool midfielder needs to prove himself as a coach once more, and he made the perfect start on Monday.

His team came from behind to beat Al-Nassr 2-1, picking up three points against one of the title favourites in a result that will have certainly caught the eye of the other members of the presumed top four.

There will be those who point to the fact that the visitors were without a number of key players, including Ronaldo, Marcelo Brozovic and Alex Telles, but Gerrard will certainly relish the way his side showed resilience to recover from Sadio Mane's early strike and gain an opening-night victory.

Gravenberch has also figured at senior level for his country in the recent past, earning 11 caps, but has opted to stay out of the Dutch camp entirely during the latest international break. That is because the youngster wants to focus on adjusting to life at Anfield following his £34 million ($43m) transfer from Bayern Munich.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

A statement from the Dutch national team confirming the absence read: “Ryan Gravenberch will not travel to Zeist this international break to join the Dutch Juniors. The Liverpool midfielder has indicated to KNVB coach Michael Reiziger that he wants to focus on his new club during the international matches in September and will therefore not make himself available.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag has now warned the teenager that his performances earlier this season were not up to scratch, insisting that he simply was not good enough. It comes amid an ongoing spat with Jadon Sancho; Ten Hag publicly called the England international out, and he responded by insisting he was being made a "scapegoat".

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Ten Hag said after the win over Palace: “You have seen at the start of the season we played him and then his contribution was not good enough.

“But he also had some good actions. You see always he is a threat in the game even when he is not playing that well.

“He has to learn when he does his job in defending he will always have his moment and he will always be decisive because he has great qualities.

“As well, it’s not only off the ball. But I want to see like today, he is entering the box in the right spot to finish. But I think it is quite normal for a player of his age that there is space for a lot of improvement.

“Everyone likes him, the fans like him, the team likes him, I like him but we also have to demand from him and push him because he can act on a very high level but he has to show it every day.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

United face Palace again in the Premier League this weekend.

Antony is the biggest waste of money in Premier League history! Man Utd must cut losses on £85m flop after 'embarrassing' Man City showing

The Brazilian was fortunate to avoid a red card in the derby, and isn't doing nearly enough to justify his place in in the squad

Manchester United have made a whole host of poor recruitment calls in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, especially when it comes to filling wide attacking berths. The likes of Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez all failed to justify their huge price tags, leaving the club with no choice but to accept significant losses on their initial investments.

Jadon Sancho is now following a similar path after his £72 million ($87m) move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, with a January exit on the cards after his public fallout with Erik ten Hag. But in United's defence, there was at least some logic to all of those moves, as they put their money behind players with either a wealth of experience at the highest level or those with potential to becoming leading talents of their generation.

Antony, however, did not fall into either of those brackets. The Brazilian joined Ajax from Sao Paulo for just £13m ($16m) in July 2020, and spent two years at the Johan Cruyff ArenA under Ten Hag before following the Dutchman to Old Trafford last summer.

Ajax made a huge profit on Antony, who ranked 19th for goals scored (18), seventh for assists (8) and 21st for chances created (75) in the Eredivisie across the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. United didn't just overpay for the winger, they had their pants pulled down in forking out £85m ($99m).

Antony hit the ground running in Manchester, becoming the first player to score in his first three Premier League games for United, but the glaring flaws in his game soon became apparent. The 23-year-old finished his first campaign with just eight goals to his name, and he's yet to score or register an assist in nine appearances this term.

There have been no clear signs of improvement in his game, with the Red Devils rarely carrying any real threat down the right flank when he is selected to start. It's clear already that Antony does not have what it takes to succeed at a club the size of United.

He is still under contract until 2027, but it would make no sense to let his stock keep plummeting. United must cut their losses on Antony at the earliest possible opportunity – on the back of his latest miserable showing in the Manchester Derby…

    'Absolutely ridiculous'

Antony was dropped to the bench for United's first meeting of the season with arch-rivals Manchester City on Sunday, and was seen shaking his head as Ten Hag snubbed him when making his first three substitutions of the match.

It wasn't until the 86th minute that Antony was introduced, when United were already 3-0 down, and he didn't appear to have much interest in trying to help his side stage an unlikely late comeback. In the closing stages, the Brazil international was instead beaten twice by Jeremy Doku in a one-on-one duel, and kicked out at the fleet-footed City attacker in frustration.

Doku wagged his finger in Antony's face twice in response, and both times the United star angrily attempted to push his hand away before they were pulled apart by their team-mates. When the dust had settled, referee Paul Tierney decided that a yellow card sufficed as punishment for Antony, much to the amazement of United legend Gary Neville.

"That's absolutely ridiculous, that's a sending-off," Neville said while on commentary duty for . "Absolutely ridiculous from Antony. It's embarrassing."

Doku still had the last laugh, though, as he took to social media to mock Antony after the final whistle. The Belgian posted an image of their altercation with the caption: "Stay calm. Manchester is blue."

It wasn't the first time that Antony has unnecessarily wound up an opponent, and it won't be the last. Usually, he is the one inviting fouls – but the difference between him and Doku is that he rarely goes on to create a goalscoring chance for his team.

He's a hot-head with an over-inflated opinion of himself, which is based on the misleading standing he enjoys in Ten Hag's squad. Antony wouldn't get near the starting XI at any other of the top six sides in the Premier League – he's just the fortunate beneficiary of Ten Hag's failure to look beyond players that he's worked with in the past.

    One-trick pony

Antony was regularly criticised for his perceived showboating last season, with former United midfielder Paul Scholes going so far as to label the former Ajax star a "clown" after his his execution of a needless 360 spin move during a Europa League game.

United are in dire need of a winger that attacks his marker and gets crosses in the box after the arrival of £73m ($89m) Danish frontman Rasmus Hojlund, but Antony certainly doesn't look capable of providing the 20-year-old with quality service.

Antony will get past his man now and again with a flashy piece of skill, but he often allows the defender to get back at him and slows United down on the attack. He's style over substance, and incredibly predictable.

When he gets the ball, you know his only goal is to cut inside. Defenders are quickly able to shut Antony down because he doesn't appear to have any right foot and lacks the pace to get down to the by-line. It's exasperating to watch him run down the same blind alleys game in, game out, and his team-mates probably feel exactly the same. Ten Hag has always championed quick passing interchanges and incisive counter-attacking football, but is failing to see that Antony prevents his United team from unleashing their full potential.

"In general, end product is massive in football," former United striker Andy Cole said to in August. "Does he [Antony] create chances for his team-mates? Not really. Does he contribute by scoring goals? Not really.

"If I was playing in a team and there was an inverted winger of Antony’s ilk, then as a centre-forward I wouldn’t be happy if I wasn’t being provided with enough assists, because my job is to score goals. I don’t believe he’s produced enough considering all the opportunities he’s had to play for Manchester United."

    Off-field distractions

United have endured a dismal start to the 2023-24 campaign, as Ten Hag has struggled to build on the platform of his promising first year at the helm – which saw him deliver the Carabao Cup and a top-four Premier League finish.

It certainly didn't help that when the action kicked-off, speculation over the Glazer family's proposed sale of the club was still raging, and the club had not yet made a decision on whether or not to reintegrate Mason Greenwood into the first-team squad.

Greenwood had been suspended since being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault in January 2022, but saw all charges against him dropped in February. United eventually announced their decision to part ways with the English forward on August 21, and he subsequently joined Getafe on loan.

But less than three weeks later, the club were forced into action again after more disturbing allegations, with Antony granted a leave of absence after his ex-girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin, filed multiple police complaints against him.

Cavallin accused Antony of attacking her while she was pregnant, and claimed that he threw a glass at her and threatened to throw her out of a moving vehicle in a shocking interview with Brazilian outlet The case is being investigated by Greater Manchester Police and forces in Sao Paulo, with both parties giving their accounts.

United confirmed Antony's return to the club on September 29, as the player had still not been arrested or charged in the UK or Brazil. Police enquires are still ongoing, though, and the club is keeping the situation under review.

Antony and Cavallin have also released various other statements in the media, which has provided an unwanted sideshow for United after what had already been a turbulent first half of the year. It remains to be seen whether Antony will be punished for any wrongdoing or not, but the whole saga has only brought more negativity.

United have also been forced to confirm that they did carry out the necessary due diligence checks on Antony, having failed to unearth an assault allegation made against him by a woman more than three months before his arrival at Old Trafford from Ajax.

    Panic buy

Ten Hag deserves most of the criticism for signing Antony, but United should have known when to stop when Ajax kept driving up their asking price during transfer negotiations.

When quizzed on the deal during a fiery exchange on social media, United icon Neville attempted to point the finger of blame at the Glazers, while also suggesting that they overpaid for Casemiro when prising him away from Real Madrid for £70m ($85m).

"Context on Antony. We’d just lost to Brighton and Brentford and the club was in reactive panic mode as per usual and sanctioned and said 'Yes' to Casemiro and Antony," Neville wrote on . "It’s all on the Glazers for complete panic and lack of leadership! They’ve done this for 10 years. CR7 [Cristiano Ronaldo] to City and panic. Alexis [Sanchez] to City and panic. Ajax couldn’t believe we’d offered that money. Owners and directors sanction deals. Now I agree Antony needs to do better, but it was never a deal to do in those circumstances."

It makes sense that United officials felt pressured into a couple of statement signings after seeing their new manager kick off his reign with two damaging defeats. The question is: can the mistake be undone?

The Glazers are now set to sell a minority stake in the club to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is pushing for full control over football matters ahead of a potential full takeover in a few years time. Ratcliffe reportedly questioned the club's recent transfers during the screening process for potential buyers, and is hoping that his £1.3 billion shareholder agreement goes through before the January transfer window opens.

In addition to overhauling United's policy when it comes to new signings, Ratcliffe must also clear out the deadwood in the squad – ideally starting with Antony. There should be no shortage of potential suitors for Antony, as he remains a young prospect with the prime years of his career still in front of him. United would be wise to use that as their main sales pitch, but they will also have to bite the bullet and accept another big loss. They'd be lucky to get even half of the original fee they paid for Antony given how badly he has struggled in the famous red shirt.

A loan move could also work for United, especially if an option to buy is included in any final deal. Ten Hag may not be around to protest by that time either, with calls for him to be sacked growing as his team continue to slip further off the pace in the Premier League.

Stuttgart dominated the first half and missed a penalty, but found themselves trailing in the 36th minute when last season's joint-Golden Boot winner, Niclas Fullkrug, tucked home from close range. The hosts, who had 64 percent possession and 16 shots to the visitors' two in the opening 45 minutes, deservedly levelled through Brighton loanee Deniz Undav shortly before the break, however.

For much of the contest, Edin Terzic's side were indebted to goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who made a host of important saves – including from the first-half spot-kick – to keep his team in the game. Despite that, he brought down Silas Katompa Mvumpa in the box, and Serhou Guirassy dispatched the subsequent penalty in the 83rd minute as Stuttgart deservedly claimed all three points.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dortmund's loss meant they slipped eight points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, who beat Heidenheim 4-2 on Saturday, and if Bayer Leverkusen win on Sunday, Xavi Alonso's side will be 10 points ahead of BVB.

They were unable to build on their comfortable Champions League victory over Newcastle in midweek and now they will have to mull over this result for a couple of weeks due to the upcoming international break.

Stuttgart are now three points clear of Dortmund, but both teams currently sit in the Champions League qualification spots, although The Black and Yellows could be leapfrogged by RB Leipzig if they beat Freiburg on Sunday.

  • USMNT IMPACT

After featuring 30 times for Dortmund last season, where he scored seven goals in all competitions, Gio Reyna has now made just six appearances this term after coming on for the final 30 minutes on Saturday.
