The Brazilian winger ended a miserable spell at United in January when he moved to La Liga until the end of the season and he has thrived from the beginning. He has scored four goals and made as many assists in 13 games, with Manuel Pellegrini's men losing just twice in all competitions in that run.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Betis have been vocal about their desire to make the 25-year-old's deal a permanent one this summer, with a club chief saying Antony wants to stay and co-star Isco calling for them to start crowdfunding for a transfer. While the Seville club will have a tough time matching United's demands for a player they paid £85 million ($98m) for in 2022, sporting director Manu Fajardo suggested they will do their best to work something out.

  • WHAT BETIS SAID

He told : "It is a source of satisfaction on a personal level [bringing Antony to Betis], but it is the result of teamwork. Although I am responsible for the sporting management, there are many people involved in this signing. It is still early days, but we will try, in different ways, to do everything to continue enjoying Antony."

Meanwhile, chief executive Ramon Alarcon told that he has high hopes: "The vice president said it the other day and I agree. When we talked about bringing him in in January it was a more remote possibility than the one there is now [of being able to keep him]. Manchester United and the player have realised that Betis is a great place for him to develop his football. Nowadays I see it as more likely that he will stay. There is a World Cup in 2026 and the English club wants him to increase his value. It will be difficult, but I am more optimistic than I was in January. I am moderately optimistic."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ANTONY?

A month on from their 2-1 win against Real Madrid, Betis earned a 1-1 draw at Barcelona at the weekend. With six wins and two draws across their last eight matches, they will hope to extend that run when they meet Jagiellonia Bialystok in the Conference League this week.

French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga arrived at Real Madrid as a talented 18-year-old from Rennes in 2021, after being targeted by top clubs including arch-rivals Barcelona.

The youngster settled into life at the Bernabeu quickly, being hailed as one of the most underrated players in the team, even filling in at left-back at times despite being a natural midfielder.

His contributions to Real Madrid's success earned him a much-improved contract in 2023, significantly increasing his wages.

Edu may now use Brazilian link to sign "exciting" gem for Nottingham Forest

After swapping Arsenal for Nottingham Forest and the chance to have a role in three different clubs this year, Edu Gaspar could instantly put his South American links to good use and sign a future star for the Midlands outfit.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

With the festive fixtures over and the second-half of the season set to get underway, Forest are beginning to look less like a flash in the pan and more like a force to be reckoned with in the race to secure a top four place in the Premier League. Sat as high as third with a five-point gap on fifth-place Newcastle United, Nuno Espirito Santo has taken Forest back to the heights of old in English football.

That said, there’s still a long way to go before Forest can confirm their European tour with plenty of twists and turns to come in true Premier League style. The January transfer window could yet help speed things up, however.

According to The Daily Mail, Nottingham Forest are now eyeing a January move to sign Kaua Elias from Fluminense in a deal that would see Edu instantly put his South American links to good use.

Nottingham Forest prepared to move for "exceptional" £25m player in January

The Tricky Trees could sign a midfielder this winter…

By
Dominic Lund

Dec 31, 2024

The Brazilian sporting director did exactly that during the early days of his Arsenal tenure to welcome Gabriel Martinelli in what proved to be a stroke of genius. Now years later, it’s Forest who could benefit from his South American links to sign a future star of their own.

Still just 18 years old, Elias has already made an impact on the Fluminense first team and could yet join compatriot Murillo at the City Ground as soon as this month if Forest decide to make an official move.

"Exciting" Elias can become Wood heir

As impressive as Chris Wood has been this season, there’s no form that can stand in the way of the ticking clock on a player’s career and at 33 years old, the forward is edging closer and closer past his best years. Forest are in no position to panic, however. On their way to Champions League qualification, a move to the City Ground is once again an attractive prospect for young talents like Elias.

The Brazilian has already earned plenty of fans in his right too, with South American football expert Nathan Joyes dubbing the teenager “the next exciting striker in Brazil” last summer.

It would, therefore, signal quite the coup if Forest did manage to welcome such a young talent who already made an impact for Fluminense throughout 2024 and someone who could eventually replace Wood. With the January window underway, the youngster is certainly one to watch in the coming weeks.

Celtic want permanent January transfer to sign "tricky" new £12m+ forward

Celtic and Brendan Rodgers have identified a new January target, with the Hoops now eyeing a permanent transfer to boost their attacking ranks this month.

Celtic transfer rumours as Rodgers teases signings

The Scottish Premiership champions are once again sitting pretty at the top of the table ahead of rivals Rangers. Despite this, the club are still looking to be proactive in the winter market, and Rodgers has recently hinted that there could be some movement in the coming days. Talking to the media relayed by The National, he said:

“I don’t know. I think something could happen this afternoon which sparks something to happen maybe in the next 24 hours, 48 hours. But either way, I always say as along as we come out of January in a stronger place then we will be really happy.

“I think anyone will tell you that when you are in the game and when you are working at this level you can’t afford to relax. You’ve got to really look through the squad and always want to improve and develop it. Sometimes that might be five or six players, sometimes that might be maybe one or two.

“Either way, you are looking to constantly improve and that’s why want to stay the best that we can possibly be.”

One player who has been heavily linked with a move to Celtic is Kieran Tierney. The Arsenal left-back is out of contract at the end of the season and looks likely to sign a pre-contract agreement with Celtic, who also want to seal a loan deal for the remainder of the campaign.

Further forward in attack, a plethora of names have been mentioned as targets, including Brondby’s Mathias Kvistgaarden and Sarpsborg 08’s Sondre Orjasaeter. However, a new name in the United Kingdom has emerged on the radar of Parkhead chiefs.

Celtic eyeing move for “tricky” £12.5m forward

According to Football Insider, Celtic are now interested in signing Aston Villa attacker Louie Barry in January. Reporter Pete O’Rourke suggests that the Hoops are eyeing up a potential permanent deal this month, with Barry returning to Villa Park after a brilliant loan spell at League One outfit Stockport County.

The 21-year-old scored 15 times and registered three assists in the third tier with Stockport, and it looks as if he could be on the move again in the winter window, with Villa wanting £12.5m according to previous reports.

Barry is primarily a left winger but can also play on the right or through the middle, so he could be an ideal replacement for Luis Palma, should the £11,000-a-week attacker depart as expected.

Former teammate Will Grigg liked what he saw from Barry during their time at MK Dons as well, saying in 2022: “He’s got a massive future. It was a bit different for him when he first came in – he had a good year at Swindon but it took him time to get going here. But we’ve seen in the last four weeks what he’s about.

“He’s quick, he can drive with the ball, he’s a really tricky and creative player. I know he was frustrated not to have scored before the weekend too.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The defeat against the Polish club was even more humiliating as Enzo Maresca had almost fielded a full-strength squad. After the match, Chelsea skipper James refused to give any excuse as he made a worrying admission about the team.

Speaking to reporters, the English full-back said: "We have no excuses. Today was not progress. If anything, it was a step back. It’s going to affect the mindset. It’s going to be in the back of people’s heads. We lost when we shouldn’t have lost."

The Blues stars were booed off by the home fans at full-time, but James expressed his sympathy for the supporters. He added: "I understand the frustration, to be honest. Fans come to games to see excitement and goals. We were frustrating to watch."

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

Maresca's men will be back in action in the Premier League on Sunday as they visit Craven Cottage to face Fulham in a crucial fixture.

The next Patrick Roberts: Sunderland chasing move for "magic" star

It’s been no great covered-up secret this January transfer window that Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris is looking to sprinkle in some more quality to his Sunderland side in the attacking positions.

Indeed, the Black Cats were pursuing the services of Tom Cannon as a statement buy up top, only for the ex-Stoke City loanee now said to be closing in on a move to promotion rivals Sheffield United instead.

Other names in the striker department continue to be linked with a move to Wearside, but it isn’t just in the centre-forward areas where the Frenchman will want to improve in attack, with an exciting winger now on their radar.

Sunderland chasing signature of new winger

As per a report by Football Insider this week, Sunderland are very much locked in a race this window to try and snap up Celtic winger Luis Palma, with a whole host of other Championship clubs sniffing around alongside the Black Cats.

Football Insider reveals that Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers are also eyeing up the Bhoys forward, with Palma presumably keen to leave the Glasgow giants behind owing to his game-time depleting this season under Brendan Rodgers.

Of course, the promotion chasers have struck absolute gold in the past when recruiting attackers that have called Scotland home briefly, with Patrick Roberts entering the building in 2022 after a memorable loan stint at Celtic Park.

What Palma could offer Sunderland

Whilst Palma’s time at Celtic has begun to fizzle out, he could go on to be the second coming of Roberts if a move was sealed, as the Honduras international has shown in the past that he can dazzle down the left wing for his current employers.

Former Celtic winger Patrick Roberts.

After all, the 25-year-old did put together some promising numbers during his debut season donning the iconic green and white hoops of Celtic.

Across his explosive 2023/24 campaign, Palma would help himself to a mightily impressive ten goals and ten assists in all competitions, with two of those strikes even coming in the Champions League as the wantaway attacker showed off his quality on Europe’s grandest stage.

Roberts would equally thrive at Celtic Park before taking the leap to join Sunderland permanently down the line, with his own impressive goal and assist haul of 18 strikes and 26 assists tallied up during his two-season loan spell at the club.

He would never look back when securing a deal to join the Black Cats for good, with the 27-year-old up to two goals and five assists this season down the right wing as one of the more experienced heads in the youthful Stadium of Light dressing room.

Whilst the Sunderland stalwart continues to excite on his familiar right channel, the options on the opposing flank aren’t exactly endless for Le Bris when looking at the table above, with Enzo Le Fee drafted into this position in the past couple of weeks owing to both Romaine Mundle and Tom Watson nursing worrying injury knocks.

That’s where the “magic” Celtic attacker – as he was once labelled by former Bhoys great Peter Grant – could come in and save the day, with a new striker perhaps also joining him through the door very soon.

Celtic stars Matt O'Riley and Luis Palma.

Sunderland just won’t want to be left behind in the ongoing automatic promotion race, with signings such as Palma no doubt boosting their attack ahead of some crunch months to come in the intense Championship.

has reported Arsenal are ready to make a significant move to bolster their defence with a bid for the Barcelona defender, who has played a crucial role in the Blaugrana’s push to win the treble this season.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kounde is under contract until 2027 and has established himself as a key part of the Barcelona defence. He has played 51 times in all competitions this season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists. However, a substantial offer for his services could be appealing to Barca in the sense that a sale would further improve what is now a less perilous financial situation.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite becoming a regular at right-back, Kounde has expressed a preference for playing in the centre of defence. Gaining that opportunity at Arsenal would be difficult with William Saliba and Gabriel likely to remain as the preferred partnership. Gabriel is sidelined with a hamstring injury but is likely to be fit for the start of next season. However, Kounde’s versatility in being able to play on the right and in the middle would give Mikel Arteta more flexibility to be able to contend with potential future injuries at the back.

    WHAT NEXT FOR KOUNDE?

Transfer speculation is likely to be the furthest thing from Kounde’s mind, with Barca set to face Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday before taking on Inter in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday. Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain in the other semi-final on Tuesday. There is a distinct possibility Arsenal could face Kounde in the showpiece in Munich next month. That game could play a role in determining how aggressive they are in their pursuit of his services.

Alan Myers drops 3-word reaction to talk of Richarlison joining Everton

There are rumours that Everton could be re-signing Richarlison right at the end of the January transfer window.

Everton transfer news

It looks as though the Blues will complete the permanent signing of Carlos Alcaraz from Brazilian side Flamengo before deadline day reached its conclusion, with Fabrizio Romano taking to X to report the news.

“Everton are completing all details of Charly Alcaraz deal from Flamengo, it will get done tonight. €15m plus add-ons on loan with obligation to buy to be activated only in case of high number of starts.”

Carlos Alcaraz for Flamengo.

Everton also made a move to sign West Brom midfielder Tom Fellows on Monday, bidding £15m for his services. The Baggies have held firm, however, not wanting to allow one of their most influential players to leave midway through the season. The 21-year-old could now be a summer target instead, but he is going nowhere for now.

The Blues were also thought to be pursuing a move for Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, seeing him as a player who could give David Moyes more attacking quality in the Premier League, but that ship appears to have sailed.

Sky man drops Richarlison to Everton reaction

Writing in response to a fan on X on Monday evening, Alan Myers claimed that “anything is possible” when quizzed about rumours of Richarlison joining Everton at the eleventh hour.

It goes without saying that it is unlikely that Richarlison will be back at Everton late in the day, but it is interesting to see Myers fail to completely rule it out. With Tottenham suffering huge injury problems all over the pitch this season, it would make little sense allowing the Brazilian to move on, weakening their squad further.

A return to Goodison Park would likely be met with some positivity from many Everton supporters, however, considering he was a popular figure during his first stint there, scoring 53 goals in 152 appearances – an impressive return in a team that was often struggling in the Premier League.

Carlo Ancelotti is one of the leading managers of his generation and he was always an admirer of the 27-year-old during his time in charge at Goodison Park, saying: “He is a modern and complete forward, not very sharp on his feet but coordinated and with great synchronization in the area. He is also strong with his head, although he is not a giant. For me, he is among the best forwards.”

Despite occasionally showcasing his immense talent, Dembele struggled to find consistency due to persistent fitness issues.

Highest paid players in the world

Despite PSG's undeniable dominance in Ligue 1, none of their players rank among the top five highest-paid footballers worldwide.

The top five are exclusively from the Saudi Pro League, with Cristiano Ronaldo, a formidable force, leading with a remarkable salary at Al Nassr.

His former Real Madrid colleague Karim Benzema is second, while Riyad Mahrez, formerly of Manchester City and now with Al-Ahli, holds third place.

Completing the list are Senegalese stars Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly in fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
