£68m striker who turned down Ten Hag twice now open to future Man Utd move

Manchester United have been told that a former striker target would be open to a move to Old Trafford in the future following a fresh update.

Ten Hag could be on the hunt for a striker

Rasmus Hojlund's first season of Premier League football has been a mixed one, and it seems clear that Erik ten Hag will be looking for a rotation option for the Dane this summer with Anthony Martial's contract expiring at the end of the season.

Though he has experimented with Marcus Rashford in central areas, the Englishman still looks most comfortable on the wing, and with Hojlund having missed several games through injury this season, an alternative could be needed.

Brobbey makes Man Utd move claim

Now in a new interview, Ajax striker Brian Brobbey has claimed that he would be open to joining Manchester United, also claiming that he is worth an audacious sum of money.

The striker has scored 17 times and grabbed a further nine assists for Ajax this season but despite his efforts, the Dutch giants are enduring one of their worst seasons in a generation, sitting fifth in the Eredivisie and almost certain to be without European football next season.

Despite this, he is not short of self-confidence, valuing himself at €80m (£68m), and has predicted a big move in his future, with Manchester United a potential destination for the Dutchman alongside Arsenal and Real Madrid.

“I’m about to blossom,” he told Dutch media [via Sport Witness].

“If I see myself and how I have played in the last few months, I think I am doing quite well. I still want to achieve many great things in my career, such as playing for a very big football club.

“Real Madrid is a beautiful club. Arsenal, Manchester United… How much am I worth? After the European Championships, €80m. Going to the European Championships is also a dream of mine."

“If I can score a goal, I promote myself even more and increase my value. If I succeed, I’m doing well. I have to score that goal. I want to pay Ajax back. Of course I left, but they brought me back. I want to make sure I have been worth it.”

Should Brobbey arrive at Old Trafford down the line, it would be a case of third time lucky for Ten Hag, who has already been turned down by Brobbey on two occasions.

brian-brobbey-ajax-premier-league-everton-transfers

In 2022, Brobbey opted for a return to Ajax when he left RB Leipzig, despite interest from the Red Devils, as he later revealed.

"Erik ten Hag called me and said that at United, my agent would get millions of euros and I could earn a multiple of my Ajax salary,” he explained. “But our decision was clear: we wanted to go to Ajax.

"Manchester United wanted to have me, but I insisted on returning to Ajax. To make that possible, my agent Jose Fortes Rodriguez even waived a hefty percentage of the sell-on clause."

Then in the most recent January transfer window, the striker shot down the rumours once more, admitting that he wasn't in contact with Ten Hag anymore after suggestions that a move was on the cards.

With lots of gaps to plug and Brobbey having just placed a mammoth £68m price tag on himself, an immediate move seems unlikely unless there are major sales at Old Trafford.

Marizanne Kapp four-for sets up series win for South Africa

Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus and Mignon du Preez combine to chase down the small target easily

Marizanne Kapp’s four-for first restricted New Zealand women to a below-par total of 115, and then Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus and Mignon du Preez combined to chase down the target within 24 overs in the second ODI as South Africa sealed the three-match series in Auckland.Opting to bat first, New Zealand were jolted by fast bowler Kapp’s early strikes, as they lost their openers inside the first five overs for just 12 runs. Suzie Bates, at No. 3, fought with a 60-ball 38 to lead a recovery but received little or no support from the other end as the New Zealand procession continued.Sophie Devine and Katie Perkins fell short of their creases, departing for 9 and 0 respectively, following which a brief 47-run resistance between Bates and Katey Martin followed. After the partnership was broken by Dane van Niekerk, Ayabonga Khaka hurt the hosts further with a double-strike in the 24th over to remove Bates and Amelia Kerr. Kapp returned to dismiss Leigh Kasperek and Jess Kerr to finish with four wickets and leave New Zealand at 108 for 9. The last-wicket pair could add only seven more runs to the total as Masabata Klaas had Hayley Jensen caught behind. In reply, Devine dismissed opener Laura Wolvaardt for a duck but Lee continued her fine form with a 43-ball 38, with Luus at the other end, as South Africa cruised towards the target. Du Preez joined Luus after Lee’s dismissal as the pair put up an unbroken 60-run stand and secured an easy win for the visitors.

Sunderland could go completely against their policy to replace Clarke

Whilst Sunderland's focus will be on finding a new manager after Mike Dodds' interim spell at the end of the season, the Black Cats have been mentioned among potential suitors for an ideal Jack Clarke replacement.

Sunderland transfer news

Since parting ways with Tony Mowbray, Sunderland have endured a nightmare spell. First, in came Michael Beale in what proved to be a disastrous and short-lived tenure. Now, choosing to stick with Dodds on an interim basis until the end of the season, Sunderland are on a run of six straight defeats in the Championship.

Sunderland in defensive crisis after update on injury to "talented" player

More bad news for the Black Cats…

By
Tom Cunningham

Mar 13, 2024

Hardly advertising themselves well in the shop window for new managers, the Black Cats have been linked with the likes of Paul Heckingbottom, Steve Cooper and Marek Papszun, but are yet to get any closer to finding a permanent solution. Meanwhile, what hasn't helped is speculation over the future of Jack Clarke.

With West Ham United, Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur all linked with moves for the winger, Sunderland could be forced to sell in a deal reportedly worth over £20m. Potentially needing to replace the winger, Carlton Palmer has tipped Sunderland to be among the clubs chasing Mikey Johnston.

Currently starring on loan from Celtic at West Bromwich Albion, Johnston may well end up staying in England's second tier. Palmer told Football League World: "He’s had a fantastic time since joining from Celtic on loan.

Mikey Johnston

“Yes, a lot of clubs will be taking note of the way that he’s playing, so you will be looking at clubs who will be looking at players moving on, Jack Clarke will be moving on, [Jon] Rowe will be moving on, and people will be looking at Mikey Johnston as a possible replacement. But certainly, Norwich and Sunderland, and other prospective Championship clubs will be monitoring the situation given his outstanding form for West Bromwich Albion.

“With Sunderland’s policy of trying to buy young players, and get them in cheap, I don’t think Johnston will fall into that because I think Celtic will be looking at least £2m or £3m given his form in the Championship.

“So whether Sunderland have the money to pay that, Norwich do have the money to pay for Mikey Johnston, so we’ll have to see come the end of the season, but he’s certainly done great things at West Brom and [is] attracting a lot of attention.”

"Fantastic" Johnston is a ready-made Clarke replacement

As Clarke heads for the exit door, Johnston would be a ready-made replacement despite being outside the club's usual target age range, having enjoyed an excellent season at the Hawthorns. The Celtic loanee has scored six goals in just nine Championship games, whilst providing one assist.

Clarke, meanwhile, has scored 15 goals in 33 Championship games in what will be a difficult output to replace in the summer transfer window, especially if it's not Johnston that those at the Stadium of Light turn to. What's more, for around £3m, Sunderland would be getting themselves a bargain deal for the West Brom loanee.

No Hojlund in predicted Man Utd lineup vs Everton

Manchester United will look to put their poor performance in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City behind them this week, with a completely different task ahead of them on Saturday.

At The Etihad, Erik ten Hag’s team had just 27% possession, three shots, and an xG of just 0.25, which shows how underwhelming they really were on the day.

Nevertheless, Sean Dyche’s Everton will provide an alternative test, but United do know how to defeat the Toffees, as proven by their 3-0 victory earlier this season.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what starting lineup Ten Hag could pick to walk out of the Old Trafford tunnel this weekend.

1 GK – Andre Onana

Andre Onana has featured in every single Premier League game this season, and he will make his 28th appearance of the campaign tomorrow.

2 RB – Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot

The Portuguese right-back has really made the position his own in recent months, and he will look to build on his impressive performance against Man City where he was United’s “best player,” as per StatmanDave.

3 CB – Raphael Varane

Raphael Varane will make his 19th Premier League start of the season against Everton, keeping his spot from last week.

4 CB – Jonny Evans

Varane’s partner this weekend will be Jonny Evans, after the duo formed a formidable partnership at the Etihad.

The 36-year-old made four clearances, three tackles, and two interceptions, but he should have less defending to do this time around if United can muster up more possession than they did against City.

5 LB – Sofyan Amrabat

Sofyan Amrabat

Victor Lindelof started at left back last week but struggled massively, with a pass accuracy of 70%.

Sofyan Amrabat is the only other option for the role, and he should come into the side, in spite of his error – as Rodri robbed him of possession on the edge of the box – for Erling Haaland's goal last weekend.

6 DM – Casemiro

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Casemiro has started every game since returning from injury against Newport County, and he will feature once again against the Toffees at the base of the midfield.

7 DM – Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo

18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo made his Premier League debut against Everton in November, and he will look to impress against them once again this time around.

8 RW – Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes and Facundo Pellistri

The fact that Bruno Fernandes is the captain, the main creator, and has never missed a game for United through injury confirms his place in the team.

9 AM – Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen for Manchester United.

The second change from last weekend is Christian Eriksen coming into the side for Scott McTominay.

The “sensational” ace, as per football creator Liam Canning, will bring technical class and creativity to the United team, as shown by his four key passes against Fulham two weeks ago.

10 LW – Alejandro Garnacho

Whether it’s on the right or the left, Alejandro Garnacho has been unbelievable this season, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

He will look to cause havoc against the Everton backline tomorrow afternoon.

Chelsea star ready to quit as news emerges from Stamford Bridge voices

It is believed a Chelsea star wants to leave the club, with a report this week sharing news from "voices" at Stamford Bridge.

Win at Aston Villa eases pressure on Pochettino

Chelsea's 3-1 win away to Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round on Wednesday eased pressure off manager Mauricio Pochettino, coming after there were rumours surrounding his possible sacking.

Indeed, two thumping losses at the hands of both Wolves and Liverpool prior to their Villa Park trip had suggestions mounting that Pochettino could be fired and replaced as Chelsea boss.

Co-owner Behdad Eghbali is a rumoured admirer of Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, for instance, while there are other beliefs that Chelsea's EFL Cup final against Liverpool will be "key" in determining Pochettino's future at the club (Pete O'Rourke).

These next few weeks will be pivotal at Chelsea, and whether their head coach can both save his job and resurrect something positive from what has been another underwhelming campaign since Clearlake Capital's takeover.

Chelsea's dismal form overall has also prompted noise of player unrest, with one of their club-record signings in midfielder Enzo Fernandez said to be weighing up his options.

Enzo Fernandez praised after Villa display

The Argentinian midfielder, a World Cup winner with his nation, managed to get on the scoresheet with a sumptuous free-kick against Villa and earned praise from Pochettino for his excellent display.

"Look, today we are living in an era where it is easy to abuse, you know? To the people, to the public people. It's normal that the players are human, not robots, and it’s so easy today to abuse," Pochettino said on criticism surrounding Fernandez this season.

"I think we need to understand that we are playing football, you know? Of course this type of situation makes us angry, situations that are completely unfair. Today, Enzo showed why he's here and he showed his quality.

"He is a world champion player. Look, when he signed one year ago, he arrived after nearly two years with no holidays, no rest, with the pressure, still young, different environment, different language, different culture, a team that needs time to build. All of these types of circumstance, you need time."

A report earlier this week indicated that Fernandez is considering a Chelsea exit, with Spanish news outlet Sport sharing an update on this.

Enzo Fernandez "wants to leave" Chelsea

As per their information, after hearing "voices coming from Stamford Bridge", Fernandez apparently "wants to leave" Chelsea – and Barcelona is a desired potential destination.

He's apparently offered himself to the La Liga champions, and it isn't "impossible" that he could seal a move there. It remains to be seen what comes of this, but Xavi's side will have to fork out a pretty considerable offer given the South American is tied to Chelsea until 2031.

  • Likely to play against the Dutch with a mask
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The French football sensation faced an unfortunate setback during France’s 1-0 victory over Austria on Monday night as the star striker was forced to leave the pitch in the latter stages of the game due to a broken nose, with blood visibly pouring down his shirt. The injury raised concerns about his availability for the rest of the Euro 2024 tournament, causing a wave of worry among French supporters.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, much to the relief of the French supporters, Mbappe returned to the training pitch on Wednesday, just days after the injury. He participated in light duties, wearing a bandage over his nose to protect the injury. This quick return to training was a promising sign for France, indicating that the striker might be able to play sooner than expected. The French squad arrived in Leipzig on Thursday afternoon, and Mbappe was seen without a bandage or mask as he got off the team bus, further fueling hopes of his quick recovery.

  • WHAT DESCHAMPS SAID

In a press conference, Deschamps confirmed that Mbappe’s recovery is progressing well. He stated: "Everything is going in the right direction after the major shock he had with the consequences, of course. Yesterday, he was able to go out and do a little activity. This will also be the case this evening. It’s moving in the right direction to make sure he can be available tomorrow."

Deschamps further confirmed that Mbappe will be wearing a protective mask for the remainder of the competition to safeguard his nose from further damage.

“Kylian will be wearing a mask,” Deschamps confirmed. “We don’t need to know the details of this mask. I think you have enough moles to know where the mask is coming from.”

Mumbai urged to manage emotions in hunt for another Super Kings scalp

Rohit Sharma and Mahela Jayawardene credited collective, not individual, brilliance for Mumbai’s sustained success

Rohit Sharma takes a lap of honour at the Wankhede•BCCI

Mumbai Indians closed out April with four successive games on the road and then edged Sunrisers Hyderabad in a crazy super-over finish at the Wankhede. As things panned out, they had to win their final league game, also at home, against Kolkata Knight Riders to top the points table. Rohit Sharma’s men ticked it off and pressed onto topple Chennai Super Kings in the first qualifier at Chepauk. All of this resulted in a welcome four-day break for Mumbai before the final.Rohit found time to visit the Tirupati temple while the rest of his team-mates and their families got together for a squad dinner in Hyderabad. On the eve of another Mumbai v Super Kings final, Rohit and coach Mahela Jayawardene were in a similar relaxed state of mind and urged their players to shelve emotions, too, and not get ahead of themselves.”Every now and then we’ve spoken to the guys about not getting too emotional about the finals or playoff games you play,” Rohit said. “We just want to focus on the game at hand and not think too far ahead. That particular thing has helped us as a team moving forward. So, I don’t think we need to change anything else, and continue to focus in that direction. If we keep doing that, it’ll work for years to come as well.”Not letting emotions cloud their judgement so far has been central to Mumbai’s run to the final. Lasith Malinga was the side’s bowling mentor last season, but they got him on board again as a player in the IPL 2019 auction after he had worked on his fitness and rediscovered his bowling rhythm. Mayank Markande, who was Mumbai’s biggest success story last season, couldn’t quite replicate his form this season, and was left out in favour of Rahul Chahar, who has produced crucial breakthroughs in the Powerplay as well as middle overs. Suryakumar Yadav had a patchy start to the tournament, but peaked against Super Kings in the first qualifier to launch Mumbai into the final.”It’s important we trust a group of players,” Jayawardene said. “And we identify the guys who are performing and who are in form and once you’re transparent about that everyone understands what’s the best XI and they pick themselves quite easily. Mayank [Markande] started the season, but we felt Rahul [Chahar] was bowling much better and his rhythm was better. So, we went with that option. Same with Lasith [Malinga].Rahul Chahar is pumped after dismissing M Vijay•BCCI

“Last year, Lasith was injured and not in great form. This year we thought he was back in form and would be a good foil for [Jasprit] Bumrah because at the back end lots of teams are leaking runs in that department. So, we want to have experience there. So, it’s a collective decision. It’s not an easy one, but as long as you’re honest and there’s a process behind the decision-making, things become easier and that entire group understands that and that’s transparent. That has helped us become consistent over the years and that’s been a part of the success as well as they come out and play fearless cricket in that environment.”Having beaten Super Kings three times in three games this season and twice in three IPL finals, Mumbai head into this IPL final with a significant advantage. When asked if performing against Super Kings brings the best out of Mumbai, Rohit simply downplayed the rivalry and said that anyone could beat anyone in the IPL, citing the example of Rajasthan Royals defeating Mumbai twice this season, but still suffering a premature exit.”I wouldn’t agree with that [Super Kings bringing the best out of Mumbai?]. The tournament itself is the biggest challenge,” Rohit said. “Every team has threats in their team. You have to be good on that particular day to beat any team. Royals for example, have not qualified but they’ve beaten us twice. MI v CSK – the reason there’s a lot of hype around is because they’ve been so successful in winning the championship. That’s probably the reason everybody looks forward to this clash and there’s a lot of talk going around these two teams. I see every team as a threat, because if you lose the grip at any stage against any opposition, you might not have the result you’re looking for.”Both Rohit and Jayawardene credited collective, not individual, brilliance for Mumbai’s sustained success. Five bowlers have claimed 10 or more wickets for Mumbai this season and although Rohit hasn’t quite fired like he can, Quinton de Kock, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar and Ishan Kishan have all made telling contributions with the bat.”Finding different match-winners is something we spoke of at the beginning of the season,” Jayawardene said. “It takes pressure off key players as well – otherwise, they are going to a game under pressure. Whereas when you have six-seven guys to win a battle for you out there, it gives you opportunities to win matches. That’s something we realised you require in such a tournament. And playing home and away as well – different conditions suits different players. Another factor is that opposition also finds it difficult to plan or have an idea how we approach different games because different guys are actually performing.”I’ve always believe that teams wins championships, individuals can win you matches, but you need a good group and team to win championships. That’s something we’ve tried doing.”
