Chelsea offered chance to sign 22-goal striker in short-term January move

Chelsea have now been offered the chance to sign a new international striker as a short-term Stamford Bridge solution this month, according to a report.

Chelsea striker rumours

The Blues and Mauricio Pochettino would ideally like to sign a striker during the January transfer window, with one of their top targets being Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

Recent reports have revealed that the Nigerian, who is currently away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, would be open to a move to Chelsea, with his agent holding “positive” talks with co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

“I understand Chelsea have had contact with Osimhen’s entourage in recent weeks/days to discuss the possibility of the Napoli striker joining Chelsea”, said journalist Simon Phillips.

“The feedback they have had is positive, with there being an understanding that Osimhen would be open to joining Chelsea. Behdad Eghbali has initiated this contact and now has good relations with Osimhen’s agent. Now, that doesn’t mean Chelsea are 100% signing Osimhen, and it doesn’t mean that he would also not be open to joining other clubs if they come in.”

Unfortunately, a transfer for Osimhen is now ‘more likely to gather pace in the summer’, potentially leaving the Blues to look elsewhere for the second half of the season.

Christopher Nkunku has suffered with injury issues and Nicolas Jackson has been inconsistent in front of goal, and by the looks of things, Chelsea have now been offered a number of short-term striker solutions.

Chelsea offered international forward

According to HITC in the last 48 hours, the Blues have been offered a number of strikers this month, including Greece international Vangelis Pavlidis, who has been starring for AZ Alkmaar.

“Sources also believe that AZ Alkmaar Vangelis Pavlidis, Zenit St Petersburg’s Mateo Cassierra, Cercle Brugge’s Kevin Denkey and Atletico Mineiro’s Paulinho are amongst a host of names who have been offered to them this month.”

Pavlidis is arguably one of the most eye-catching names of the four, with the 25-year-old starring in the Netherlands during the current campaign, already scoring 22 goals in 27 games this season.

The striker began his career on the books in Germany with VfL Bochum before moving to the Netherlands with Willem II in 2019. He then switched to AZ Alkmaar in 2021 and has seen his Transfermarkt valuation rocket from €2.5m to a career-high €25m.

Therefore, you could argue that signing Pavlidis this month for the second half of the season may well be a shrewd move before possibly targeting someone like Osimhen in the summer.

Tottenham exit on the cards after Lloris as Perisic eyes January transfer

Tottenham could soon witness another January exit after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, with reliable journalist Alasdair Gold sharing news on a high-earner's future.

Lloris set to leave Spurs after 11 years

Just over 11 years after he signed for Spurs, veteran shot-stopper Lloris will bring an end to his N17 career by putting pen to paper on a move to MLS side Los Angeles FC.

Journalist says "rapid" 25-year-old is now "keen" to join Ange at Spurs

He’s a target for the Lilywhites ahead of January.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 29, 2023

Fabrizio Romano has given his famous "here we go" to the transfer, with Lloris set to sign a one-year deal at LAFC plus options to extend his stay by additional years.

The Frenchman made 444 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham (Transfermarkt), reaching a Champions League final with the club and standing out as their first-choice keeper for many seasons before the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario.

However, his faithful service has now been brought to an end, and Lilywhites supporters will look back on his contribution with real appreciation after over a decade of solid performances.

From a business perspective, Spurs will perhaps be happy to get a high-earning player off the books and free up space for new January arrivals.

As per The Telegraph, departures will be a key component of manager Ange Postecoglou's transfer window, with Tottenham looking to sign a centre-back, winger and midfielder.

Perisic "keen" to leave Spurs after Lloris

The north Londoners, according to football.london correspondent Gold, will also be hoping to offload Spurs attacker Ivan Perisic after Lloris.

It is believed Perisic is "keen" on a move to Hajduk Split in January, despite the Croatian being unable to return from injury until the final weeks of the season.

Perisic could apparently make the move to Split and chairman Daniel Levy, if the transfer materialises, may be able to get the 34-year-old's reported £180,000-per-week salary off Tottenham's books (Spotrac). Gold's report even alleges that Spurs "will be hoping" the wide-man is able to make a move happen.

The former Inter Milan star impressed in flashes this campaign before his season-ending injury, and former Spurs boss Antonio Conte heaped praise on Perisic after the club signed him last year.

"It is very important we sign a player like Ivan Perisic," said Conte in the summer of 2022.

“We are talking about a real important player and top player. Sometimes it is good to bring a player in your team who is a bit over age but at the same time a good player with experience who can improve a young player in your squad.”

Spurs could land dream Maddison partner in “outrageous” £17m machine

By and large, the devoted Tottenham Hotspur faithful will be excited by the new era that is shaping up in north London, with Ange Postecoglou looking to bring silverware and success to the club.

With his ideas and stratagems quickly coalescing, Spurs put an abject 2022/23 campaign behind them and marched into a brilliant early-season purple patch, topping the Premier League table after ten fixtures.

Micky van de Ven limps off injured for Spurs.

But the squad's thinness always threatened to stifle the revival and injuries to key personnel such as James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, exacerbated by a horde of further setbacks, resulted in a five-match winless run that has now been snapped with successive wins.

Postecoglou is building something and there is much to look forward to, but given that Harry Kane's summer sale did not prompt a like-for-like replacement – with Heung-min Son and Richarlison seemingly the designated strikers – it may be wise to swoop for a centre-forward in January.

Tottenham transfer news – Serhou Guirassy

According to 90min, Tottenham are among the score of Premier League outfits eager to sign Stuttgart's free-scoring star Serhou Guirassy in January, with seemingly every top-flight club on English shores eager to snap him up.

The report does state that Manchester United, Fulham, West Ham United and AC Milan had scouts in attendance for the player's recent defeat to Bayern Munich, though Tottenham have been known to be keeping tabs on Guirassy for several months.

It seems that the 27-year-old's desire is to see out the campaign with his Bundesliga surprise package, but with a release clause of €20m (£17m), the sharks have inevitably started circling.

Why Spurs should sign Serhou Guirassy

With Tottenham in need of a striker and Guirassy available for a bargain fee, it's not really surprising that Postecoglou wants his signature.

But nor is it surprising that so many other teams are intrigued, given Guirassy's "outrageous" return of 18 goals and two assists from 15 matches across all competitions this season – as was said by The Athletic's Seb Stafford-Bloor.

As per FBref, the Guinean ace ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and the top 14% for shot-creating actions per 90 as well as the top 4% for pass completion, highlighting his deadly cutting edge and crispness in distribution, maintaining the offensive fluency.

By signing a striker who is scoring at a rate that is only surpassed by the ridiculous return of Kane, Postecoglou would finally have a clinical natural striker, allowing Son to wreak havoc from his favoured left wing – serving as a counterweight, of sorts.

With Maddison pulling the strings behind him, Spurs really could have a match made in heaven, considering the England international's creative ingenuity was probably the central reason behind the side's resounding start to the season.

Winning August's Player of the Month in the Premier League, Maddison racked up three goals and five assists across 11 outings, remarkably making 2.9 key passes per game and completing 85% of his total passes.

Maddison ranks among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers for assists, the top 2% for shot-creating actions and the top 5% for progressive passes per 90 – it is this passing prowess that could weave so nicely into Guirassy's game, tuning a connection that would allow the duo to work in flux and create a deadly and unbreakable threat.

While Spurs boast an exciting squad and have only really suffered in recent weeks due to a torrent of injuries, it's clear that reinforcements are needed to compete against the top forces in the division, and Guirassy would be the dream addition to strengthen the frontline.

MSL attracts 3.4 million viewers on opening weekend

While gate receipts have been lukewarm, the TV numbers spell out hope for Cricket South Africa

The Mzansi Super League attracted a live television audience in excess of 3.4 million South African viewers during it’s opening weekend that featured four matches. The league is only just starting to gain traction and attract fans to matches as summer sets in, but TV figures suggest the league has already struck up significant interest from viewers watching at home.Iffy weather, a cold snap on the opening weekend and the introduction of new teams perhaps resulted in the tournament failing to attract huge number of fans to the ground. Only around 7000 fans turned up for the first match between Cape Town Blitz and Tshwane Spartans at the 25,000 capacity Newlands, while 4896 were at Wanderers for the game between Jozi Stars and Nelson Mandela Bay Giants. At the same time, the match attracted 16,65,546 unique TV viewers in South Africa alone. An audience analysis carried out independently by Nielsen Sport revealed that a unique TV audience of 34,18,594 viewed the first four matches in the league. The Saturday night fixture between the Jozi Stars and Nelson Mandela Bay Giants drew the biggest audience, with all four matches going beyond the 1.3 million mark.SABC-3, the channel the games have been broadcast on in South Africa, typically attracts around 21 million South African viewers in a month. The top rated show on the channel is the soap opera Isidingo, which has been running for 20 years and attracts around a million viewers per episode, to which MSL’s viewership figures compare favourably. For further comparison, the T20I against Zimbabwe on 12 October attracted 6,07,948 viewers to the channel. Outside of South Africa, a broadcast deal with Sony means that the MSL is also being screened in India on the channels Sony Six and Sony Six HD. CSA also have a deal with UK-based channel FreeSports, which is available in 18 million homes in the UK. FreeSports also aired live coverage of the 2017 Bangladesh Premier League.”This fully justifies our decision to take the SABC on board as our domestic host broadcast partner,” Cricket South Africa Chief Executive Thabang Moroe said . “This is truly a product for the people and has helped us achieve one of our key objectives not just to attract traditional cricket fans but to open up a new market as well.”It is a win-win situation for all our stakeholders whether they be administrators, players, coaches, fans or our commercial partners. The MSL can only go from strength to strength as it will continue to grow while establishing itself alongside various T20 leagues around the world. The most watched sporting event in South African television history was the opening match between South Africa and Mexico during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, with a combined 10,146,793 viewers watching the match on SABC 1 and SuperSport 3 on the satellite DSTV network. While figures for match attendances are starting to rise, with the game between Cape Town Blitz and Paarl Rocks last weekend close to sold out, the television viewing figures are an even more positive sign for CSA after their initial attempt at a homegrown league – the defunct T20 Global League – failed.

Arsenal could land a dream Rice partner in swoop for £75k-p/w maestro

Arsenal did not mess around in the summer transfer window, strengthening a squad that went the distance in the Premier League title race last season by recruiting three, stand-out additions that even saw the Gunners break their transfer record in the process.

Jurrien Timber looked to be a promising signing from Ajax, the Dutch centre-back warranting a £38m transfer fee after excelling in his native Netherlands but the 22-year-old would fall foul of an ACL injury on the opening day.

jurrien-timber-arsenal-transfer-arteta-edu-arthur-vermeeren

Kai Havertz and Declan Rice joined also, with the latter signed for that record-breaking fee – signing for £105m – and slotting straight into the Arsenal set-up effortlessly.

Yet, in this upcoming January transfer window, Mikel Arteta could well be shopping for even more new faces to add to his group with Douglas Luiz reportedly one of the targets wanted by the Spanish head coach to complement Rice in the middle of the park.

Arsenal's interest in Luiz

First interested in Luiz last year – Arsenal failing to land the Villa man at the time with bids waved away – the Gunners could well reignite their interest in the Brazilian when January rolls around according to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside.

A number of clubs are keeping tabs on Aston Villa's £75k per-week midfielder via Capology, with Romano stating that Arsenal are very much still an interested party despite previous failed attempts.

He said, via Caught Offside: "Of course, we know that Arsenal had bids rejected for Luiz in September 2022, and he later went on to sign a new contract at Villa Park, which runs until 2026. He’s now a key player for Villa so the deal would not be an easy one, but many clubs appreciate him.”

douglas-luiz-aston-villa-transfer-gossip-arsenal-edu-arteta-declan-rice

Arteta will hope that this persistence pays off, with Luiz in electric form currently for an Aston Villa team firing on all cylinders and proving himself to be an excellent Premier League player.

Luiz's performances for Villa this season

Luiz has particularly stood out going forward for Unai Emery's men this season, despite naturally playing in a more reserved midfield role.

He has five goals from only ten games played in the Premier League, as Aston Villa continue to impress – 5th in the table as things stand after a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Luton Town.

Despite his impressive performances to date, Luiz is going under the radar somewhat with football pundit and ex-Arsenal player Paul Merson referring to the one-time Manchester City man as "underrated" recently compared to other stand-out performers from the top-flight stealing the limelight.

Leon-bailey-jhon-duran-douglas-luiz-aston-villa

Luiz's more daring game overall – which saw him individually create six shot-creating actions against West Ham in October, per FBRef – would make him a perfect partner for Rice if Arsenal could seal this potential deal, who also can help out in attack when called upon.

Further, Luiz looks to be an upgrade on Havertz already with the German midfielder firing blanks in terms of goal output for his new employers.

The Brazilian is also unafraid to roll up his sleeves and win tackles to help his side consolidate, averaging 2.36 tackles per match over the last year according to FBRef.

Although the 25-year-old struggles aerially – only 0.57 aerial battles won per 90 according to FBRef from the last year – his potential partner in Rice excels where Luiz falters with an impressive 1.09 aerials won on top of making 1.72 interceptions per 90 minutes.

This suggests that the Villans star could be a tough-tackling partner for the England international, who can make up for his potential teammate's lack of physicality in the air, and someone who can provide attacking impetus.

Arteta will hope that this potential partnership does come to fruition, the Gunners adding Luiz to the building could help the North Londoners on their way to challenge for the Premier League title once more and even win the esteemed honours.

ScorecardRevenge was sweet for Surrey Stars as they beat defending champions Western Storm by seven wickets in the first ever Kia Super League fixture to be staged at Cheltenham.Legspinner Sophia Dunkley claimed 3 for 18, including the wicket of Indian star Smriti Mandhana, as Storm were restricted to 132 for 9 in their 20 overs.Inspired by Sarah Taylor’s well-judged innings of 50 not out from 34 balls, Stars chased down their target with 4.1 overs to spare, avenging the defeat they suffered at the hands of Storm in last season’s semi-final.Appreciating Storm’s strength when chasing, Stars skipper Natalie Sciver won the toss and deployed a quartet of spinners in an attempt to tie down the defending champions on a used pitch.Storm began well enough, openers Rachel Priest and Mandhana taking advantage of the power-play fielding restrictions and a fast outfield to find the boundary on a regular basis in adding 43 in five overs.Out to prove a point after being dropped by New Zealand in the winter, Priest made 21 at a run-a-ball, harvesting 4 fours, before hoisting a Marizanne Kapp length ball to mid-off.Undeterred, overseas signing Mandhana picked up the cudgels, plundering 15 runs off one Laura Marsh over as she moved gracefully towards a half century. But Storm’s smooth progress was checked by 20-year-old Dunkley, who made a double breakthrough when introduced from the College Lawn End in the eighth over. The Middlesex spinner had England captain Heather Knight caught at the wicket and, two balls later, persuaded Mandhana to hole out to deep midwicket for 37.Dunkley then lured Fran Wilson into front foot indiscretion, the England international miss-timing a drive and offering a catch to Grace Gibbs at mid-off. At that point, Dunkley boasted figures of 3 for 6 from seven balls.England spinner Marsh weighed in with 2 for 28, accounting for the dangerous Stafanie Taylor and Sophie Luff, while Mady Villiers bowled Naomi Dattani for 12 and England World Cup hero Anya Shrubsole lofted Gibbs to van Niekerk on the long-off boundary.Wickets continued to tumble as Gibbs had Danielle Gibson held on the long-on boundary in the penultimate over.Expansive from the outset, Lizelle Lee (22) and Bryony Smith (33) played aggressively in a power-play that yielded 59 runs, affording Stars’ reply crucial early momentum. The balance of power shifted when Gibson removed Smith and Sciver in the space of nine balls to reduce Stars to 79 for 3 in the ninth over, but World Cup winner Taylor summoned an assured response to calm any nerves.Supported by van Niekerk (14 not out), the England wicketkeeper dominated an unbroken stand of 57 for the fourth wicket, harvesting nine fours as the visitors banked a bonus point win.
