James Tavernier was Rangers’ bright spark

Rangers had to settle for a draw in their Premiership clash this afternoon in a match which saw two red cards and a late equaliser.

The Ibrox side came into the match having won their opening three league games, whereas Hibernian only had four points from a possible nine. A slow start from both teams was no indication of what was to come in a frantic second half, with James Tavernier’s penalty giving the visitors the lead.

Martin Boyle equalised from poor Rangers defending and Tom Lawrence quickly headed Van Bronckhorst’s side back in front before two incidents totally changed the nature of the game.

Firstly, John Lundstram was sent off for a poor lunge on Boyle, who was attempting to start a counterattack. Less than ten minutes later, Alfredo Morelos was also giving his marching orders following a wild swing of his arm into the face of Marijan Cabraja.

Rather inevitably, Hibs equalised in the final few minutes with a nice half-volley from Josh Campbell, who ensured that the points were shared at Easter Road.

Tavernier was Rangers’ brightest spark

The Rangers “legend” was arguably the best player for the Ibrox side, coolly slotting a first-half penalty to give Van Bronckhorst’s men a half-time lead.

His SofaScore rating of 7.3 was the joint-highest in the Rangers team alongside Lawrence and Borna Barisic, while his 87 touches during the game were the most among the visitors’ line-up, showing his urgency to get on the ball and begin attacks from the back.

The Gers captain also made three tackles and three interceptions and succeeded with both his attempted dribbles. He was again the leader that the Light Blues needed, despite the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser.

The Dutchman will be delighted that his captain has signed a new extension to his contract at the club, as today it was evident that his cool head, especially when his team are under pressure, will be absolutely crucial going forward.

Despite the costly equaliser, Rangers can head into the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie against PSV Eindhoven in a confident mood. If Tavernier can replicate his performance from today in the Netherlands in midweek, the Gers could be sampling group stage football in Europe’s premier club competition.

Tottenham: Journalist shares new ‘info’ on Zaniolo talks

Journalist Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato has shared some new information for Tottenham supporters involving Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo.

The Lowdown: Spurs chase Zaniolo…

The Lilywhites are believed to be chasing the 23-year-old as sporting director Fabio Paratici gears up for Antonio Conte’s first full Premier League season in the dugout in N17.

Deals have already been done for Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence this summer as the north Londoners remain very busy in the transfer market.

Paratici is apparently still in the market for a creative midfielder and potentially a new centre-back, with Aouna sharing the latest on Tottenham’s pursuit of Zaniolo.

The Latest: Aouna shares Zaniolo ‘info’…

Taking to social media on Monday morning, the Foot Mercato reporter shared ‘info’ involving Spurs and Zaniolo. Indeed, he claims the north London club are set for imminent fresh talks to sign the nine-cap Italy international.

Aouna explained (via Twitter): “Info: New discussions planned this week between Roma and Tottenham for Zaniolo.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-3/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done…

As per WhoScored, Zaniolo finished 2021/22 as one of Roma’s best attacking threats, completing more take-ons per 90 minutes than any of his team-mates, whilst also attracting the most fouls in that time.

The starlet also possesses a physicality which seems tailor-made for English football, standing at a lofty 6 foot 3, an aspect of his game which could be attractive to both Paratici and Conte.

A concern for Spurs could well be Zaniolo’s injury history at the Stadio Olimpico, yet the player’s aforementioned quality could make him a worthy punt depending on the asking price.

Tottenham want Spence deal done ASAP

Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge has delivered the latest transfer news regarding Tottenham’s pursuit of Djed Spence.

The Lowdown: Deal close?

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs ever since he helped Nottingham Forest gain promotion to the Premier League at the end of last season, with Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder even admitting that the right-back wanted out on Teesside.

Speculation that a move to N17 was imminent increased after it was revealed on Monday that he hadn’t been included in Boro’s squad for their pre-season trip to Portugal, but it sounds as though there is still plenty of work for the Lilywhites to do before securing the services of their long-time target.

The Latest: Bridge contradicts done deal reports

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily), Bridge claimed that reports of a move being close last week were false, but stated that all parties are still very much keen on the switch. He said:

“Djed Spence is something that’s gone on all summer, it’s a player Spurs have wanted for quite some time, they’ve liked him for a long time as well.

“Talks are still continuing and I know there were reports last week that a deal is extremely close, my understanding is it wasn’t.

“I know that both clubs would like to get this done as soon as possible, I think the player would like to join Tottenham, he’s made that very clear to his representatives and Middlesbrough that he wants to join Tottenham, but a fee is still being discussed and we’re not yet at the end of this transfer.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Perfect fit for Conte

Whilst the valuation still remains an issue, the fact that Spence has shown his desire to join Spurs will be appreciated by Antonio Conte, and Fabio Paratici needs to get this deal wrapped up as soon as possible.

The England U21 international significantly contributed to Forest’s promotion last term, clocking up five assists and getting on the scoresheet twice himself in the Championship, via Transfermarkt, all from that wing-back position, a role vitally important to the Italian’s attacking formation.

It yet remains to be seen how long this will take to get completed, but it’s important that Spence has enough time to link up with the rest of the squad and get a good pre-season under his belt before the start of the new campaign.

Manchester United: Ben Jacobs shares Youri Tielemans update

Manchester United’s interest in Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans ‘is growing’, according to CBS Sports Golazo journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: United linked with Tielemans

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old this year, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that the club have been ‘exploring’ a possible deal.

United appear to be closing in on free agent Christian Eriksen after a verbal agreement was reached, while it seems that they haven’t given up on priority target Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, and it looks as if Tielemans could be another midfielder to make the move to Old Trafford.

The Latest: Jacobs provides Tielemans update

Jacobs took to Twitter on Thursday to provide an ‘update’ on Tielemans. He said that United’s ‘interest is growing’, and along with Arsenal, it could provoke a ‘formal offer’ from the Red Devils.

The reporter tweeted: “Youri Tielemans update. Told Tielemans is more likely than Sergej Milinković-Savić for Arsenal. No truth yet in any bid, though. Man United’s interest is growing and could finally provoke formal offers from both clubs. Tielemans wants Arsenal. But as yet nothing tabled to LCFC.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-4/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One to watch?

It could well be an extremely busy few weeks at Old Trafford ahead of Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, with the United boss thought to be a big fan of Tielemans.

The 25-year-old has been hailed as ‘one of Europe’s top midfielders’ by Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers and can play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder.

The Belgium international has plenty of Premier League experience during his three-year stay at the King Power Stadium, and with Tielemans now into the final 12 months of his contract, a cut-price move could be a possibility for the £49.5m-rated midfielder.

Rangers in pole position to sign Bailey Rice

Rangers are leading the race to sign Motherwell wonderkid Bailey Rice, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Sought-after prospect

The youngster does not turn 16 until October; once he does, he will then be eligible to sign his first professional contract.

Back in March, it was reported that Brighton and Manchester City were interested in signing the Scotsman, who has now made 14 caps at youth level for his country, but it looks like he will be opting to stay closer to home.

The 15-year-old is a centre-back who also has experience playing in midfield, having featured in a number of roles for Scotland’s U17 side.

The Latest: Rangers leading the race

Rice has been the subject of heavy interest by both Rangers and Celtic this summer, alongside a number of Premier League clubs.

According to a fresh report by Football Insider, the Gers are emerging as the favourites to sign the young defender, with the Light Blues now in pole position to secure the Motherwell player’s signature.

The Verdict: Bags of potential

It would be a major coup for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side if the Glasgow outfit beat their city rivals to the Scottish wonderkid.

Rice could end up on the same trajectory as academy graduate Nathan Patterson, who joined Premier League side Everton for a reported £12m fee in January, with add-ons bringing this total up to £16m.

Rangers will of course want to try and replicate this type of business in the future, so the potential arrival of the 15-year-old may be yet another master-stroke in the long-run, whether he fulfils his potential at Ibrox or elsewhere.

Newcastle transfer news on Diaby

Reliable journalist Ryan Taylor has now shares some big transfer news on reported Newcastle United target Moussa Diaby.

The Lowdown: Diaby eyed

It has been widely reported that the St. James’ Park outfit are eyeing up a potential move for Diaby this summer.

It is certainly no surprise to see the interest given the season that he has had at Bayer Leverkusen, where he managed to score no fewer than 17 goals and supply a further 14 assists in total across all competitions, mainly operating from the flanks (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Not for sale

Taking to Twitter, Taylor has revealed that Diaby is ‘not for sale’ after talking to Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes:

“Sat down with Bayer Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes, who told me NUFC target Moussa Diaby is not for sale.”

The Daily Express journalist shared the following comments made by Rolfes when asked if Diaby could leave:

“We want to keep Moussa for as long as possible. We have no offers & aren’t looking for them at the moment.”

The Verdict: Big blow

It would be a big blow if the North East club were to miss out on signing Diaby this summer.

Morade Djeddi, the president of his first club Esperance Paris 19e, has claimed that the France international has a ‘supernatural, divine gift’, evidenced by his form in front of goal.

He has been praised by German media for his ‘amazing’ dribbling, ‘irresistible’ pace and ‘astonishing’ speed of thought, and was even dubbed ‘unstoppable’ after scoring one goal and setting up another in a crushing 4-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach (Bundesliga).

Diaby and Allan Saint-Maximin could form a quite deadly duo on either wing for the Magpies, but it looks like this is one PIF will have to re-visit some time in the future.

Celtic must secure Ola Solbakken transfer

Celtic have seen many players move in and out of the squad over the past decade either on permanent or loan deals.

In terms of the players that joined the Hoops, while some may not have made an impact, one that definitely made the most of his time at Parkhead is Patrick Roberts.

During two loan spells from Premier League club Manchester City, the winger ended up making 78 appearances across all competitions.

In those appearances, the Englishman scored 18 goals, provided 26 assists and won seven trophies in the process.

Predominantly playing on the right-wing, the 25-year-old played in numerous positions across the attack and midfield, making himself a useful and versatile squad option.

Now that the former Celtic loan star has brought an end to his time with the Premier League champions and joined Sunderland, it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll be returning to Parkhead anytime soon.

However, the Hoops could sign what may well be a new version of Roberts this summer by securing a move for Bodo/Glimt winger Ola Solbakken, who was linked with a move to Celtic Park last month.

With 53 appearances under his belt on the right wing and 41 on the left, his versatility could also make him a useful option for Postecoglou as Roberts was for Celtic during his period with the club.

In 115 senior club appearances, the £1.8m-rated attacker has found the net 23 times and delivered 27 assists, showing that, once again, just like Roberts, Solbakken has a knack for not only scoring but creating goals as well from the wings.

To compare Roberts’ 2017/18 season at Celtic with Solbakken’s current campaign with his current club, the Norwegian attacker currently has a higher average of assists per 90 minutes than the Englishman racked up.

Labelled as being “[Jose] Mourinho’s nightmare” by journalist Pablo Giralt after the 23-year-old scored two goals in the 6-1 victory over AS Roma back in October, Solbakken could be a solid addition to Celtic’s ranks as they aim to not only regain the SPFL title but also get their hands on other domestic trophies and do their best in Europe.

Moving forward, should Postecoglou feel the need to strengthen what already is a rather attacking team this summer, securing a deal for the Bodo/Glimt star could be a great bit of business for the Parkhead club and give the fans a new version of Roberts to enjoy watching.

Spurs dealt setback ahead of Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a further setback ahead of their Premier League meeting with Liverpool tonight.

What’s the latest?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via Evening Standard), Jurgen Klopp revealed that he has a fully fit squad at his disposal for the meeting with Spurs, with the 54-year-old hinting that Roberto Firmino will be available for selection should he feel that the centre-forward is required.

When asked whether the Brazil international will be fit to feature against Spurs, the German said: “I don’t know, but he is back in training, so now we have to make a decision about that. But let’s see. Yesterday he was in training, was great.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

When asked whether the remainder of his squad will be available for selection, Klopp added: “Yes. I don’t have my smartphone here, because I get messages pretty late, but when I checked it last time, yes.”

Conte will be gutted

Considering just how important tonight’s fixture is for Tottenham’s hopes of securing a top-four finish this season, the news that Firmino looks as if he will be available and that the rest of the Liverpool squad are fit, coupled with Spurs’ earlier loss of Sergio Reguilon to injury, is sure to have left Antonio Conte gutted.

Indeed, the Reds have been in exceptional form across all competitions this season, having already lifted the Carabao Cup, secured a place in the final of both the Champions League and the FA Cup.

In addition, they are just one point behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, with Klopp being in with a fantastic chance of securing an unprecedented quadruple.

As such, when taking into account just how talented the current crop of Liverpool players quite clearly is, the news that the Reds have no injury concerns ahead of the Tottenham game is sure to come as a huge blow to Spurs’ chances of picking up a positive result at Anfield, with Conte in desperate need of the three points if he is to give his side the best possible shot at securing Champions League football next season.

Inglorious batting keeps Dilruwan Perera incognito once again

Dilruwan Perera claimed another five-wicket haul to cap a successful series with the ball – not that you’d know it

Andrew Fidel Fernando at the SSC25-Nov-2018If you do not know much about Sri Lanka offspinner Dilruwan Perera, please acquaint yourself with some 100% accurate, rock-solid, absolutely-not-made-up facts about the man. As a reserve firefighter he routinely runs into blazes no one else dares go near. He has rescued nine infants, five cats and – though he hates to admit it – three members of parliament. As a teenager, angered by his school’s continued refusal to fix leaks in the classroom roof, Dilruwan broke in at night and set up the class furniture on the roof, as a protest. He was chaired around town by fellow students for his heroism and enterprise. Once, coming across an abandoned nest of baby birds, he ate a whole tree’s worth of mangoes and regurgitated them in order to raise the chicks to adulthood. He has a keenly developed eye for the human anatomy, and has helped police arrest dozens of public nudity offenders by looking at grainy social media photos and then picking out the culprits’ backsides from a crowd. Before you start preparing a libel lawsuit, I will confess immediately that all of the above are totally false, but there is a good reason for having made things up, and that is to somehow raise Dilruwan Perera awareness, even by peddling aggrandising lies. Some truths now. Did you know he has now appeared in 34 Tests? That’s 11 more than Mohammad Asif. Were you aware he now has 147 Test wickets? That’s 34 more than Ryan Harris. And are you aware that in this ongoing Test series against England, he is the highest wicket-taker, with 22 dismissals, and has very little chance of being caught? You’re not, are you? Completely unintentionally, for whom amongst us does not crave recognition, this is just how Dilruwan rolls. Forever overshadowed, perennially underappreciated. As a cricketer, over the past five years, it is difficult to think of anyone, anywhere who has been more incognito. When he gets a five-wicket haul, which he had done on seven occasions before day three in Colombo, there is always a tastier narrative. Maybe Rangana Herath took four at the other end and broke a record. Or was there a controversy about the quality of the pitch? Someone tampered with the ball, maybe. Someone else was called for a suspicious action. Wonder of wonders, Sri Lanka got their reviews right.Or maybe, as is most often the case for a Sri Lanka bowler, Dilruwan took a five-for, led the team off the field holding the ball aloft, then the batsmen came out and proceeded to put on one of their show-stopping, history-making, miss-an-over-and-they-are-nine-down collapses. Dilruwan has taken eight wickets in this game, but no one cares, because his team have produced passages in which they have lost 9 for 67, and then 4 for 37.Even when Sri Lanka were bowling, there was a bigger story – Lakshan Sandakan’s two reprieves of Ben Stokes, who was first caught at cover, then at slip, only to be recalled on both occasions because Sandakan had overstepped.Dilruwan Perera celebrates a breakthrough•Associated PressDilruwan has now been called upon to step into Herath’s shoes and lead this spin attack, but in so many ways he is more Herath than Herath himself. Where Herath was kept in the shadows by Muttiah Muralitharan until he was 31, Dilruwan was 36 before he received the spin-leader mantle. Only now does he stand a chance of playing on tracks where Sri Lanka field just one spinner. If Herath’s action was a throwback, Dilruwan’s is straight out of the 1920s – a brief straight-on amble, a gentle pivot, a velvet delivery.Dilruwan is not tall enough for it to be an obvious advantage, not short enough for there to be an against-the-odds angle, not slim enough to look athletic, not pudgy enough to be made fun of, and too quiet to deliver newsworthy lines. Herath is a banker, but even that seems too sexy for our guy. He’s more like a banker’s accountant. Or a banker’s accountant’s accountant. His strengths, as a bowler, which are substantial, are plain to see, of course. He bowls an accurate line, keeps it on a good length, reads batsmen well, mixes up his pace, turns some and slides others on to the pad.If all that sounds too boring to contemplate, perhaps it is worth contemplating Dilruwan anyway, even if in the form of a fabricated fantasy. There Dilruwan stands on a deserted island, shirtless, pecs glistening, spearing a fish from 20 metres. There he sits, an adoring crowd gasping at a feat of strength, as he cracks coconut after coconut between his thighs.Give him a few seconds of thought on a day on which he took another five-wicket haul. Because next time he does it, there might be a flood, or a brawl, or a hornet attack. In addition, obviously, to another Sri Lanka batting collapse.

Smith v Jadeja: an intriguing battle looms

Both Steven Smith and Ravindra Jadeja had tried the wrong discipline in international cricket, and had been ridiculed for it. They are at the peak of their careers now. Who will come up on top this series?

Sidharth Monga in Pune22-Feb-2017One of the enduring images of Australia’s last tour of India was Steven Smith facing up to Ravindra Jadeja. In another world, it might have been Jadeja facing up to Smith.People have been building up the similarities between Smith and Virat Kohli, but it’s Jadeja that Smith shares a stronger connection with. Smith was once upon a time supposed to be the next Shane Warne when he made his Test debut as a legspinner against Pakistan and batted at No. 8. Jadeja had scored three triple-centuries in first-class cricket. India had tried to make him bat high in limited-overs cricket. Both Smith and Jadeja had tried the wrong discipline in international cricket, and had been ridiculed for it. In fact Jadeja’s recent Test debut had come on the back those triple-centuries. There were even memes when he struggled with the bat against England. In the 2012-13 series between India and Australia, though, the teams finally realised Smith was primarily a batsman and Jadeja a bowler. Four years later, Smith averages 60 with the bat, and Jadeja is only marginally behind the world’s No. 1 bowler, R Ashwin, on the ICC rankings. Their transformation has made for two of the loveliest stories in cricket over the last four years.Jadeja will now have Smith in his sights, for four years ago he helped start a pattern. Smith’s comeback began in in the third Test of the series as a No. 5 batsman. He scored an impressive 92 before Pragyan Ojha ripped one past his bat to have him stumped. In the next Test, on a rank turner in Delhi, Smith padded up to Jadeja, only to watch the ball go straight on to peg back his stumps. When you get beaten on either edge in such a short period, doubt is bound to creep in.In seven Tests in Asia, Smith has fallen to spin 13 times. Eight of those wickets have been to left-arm spin. On three of those occasions he has been stumped, but on the other five he been either lbw or bowled. That is the dismissal that plays with your mind. Add another one to that list when Yasir Shah got him lbw with a legbreak that didn’t turn. The balls that don’t turn, or the unpredictable amount of turn on the ball after it pitches, gives batsmen little time to adjust off the pitch. That is the biggest challenge for batsmen coming to Asia.Steven Smith was stumped for 92 by Pragyan Ojha in the 2013 Mohali Test•BCCI”I think that’s one of the big challenges of playing spin bowling in Asia is the uncertainty of what the ball’s sort of going to do off the pitch,” Smith said. “Playing spin in Australia, the bounce and the spin is generally pretty consistent. It’s here where there is uncertainties that we can become unstuck as a batter.”The plan obviously has been to make sure you don’t get beaten by the straighter ball. If the ball turns as expected and takes the outside edge, so be it, but the one that doesn’t turn shouldn’t beat your inside edge. “For us it’s ensuring we have a plan to play against the spin of [R] Ashwin, Jadeja and the other spinner that they are going to choose tomorrow,” Smith said. “It’s making sure that you have a plan in place for getting out a certain way almost. You have to be willing to give something up and take out one side of the bat. That’s my view of playing spin bowling. Everyone’s different but the guys have worked hard to develop plans.”Taking out the lbw or bowled is not that simple, though. For once you start playing inside the line, you expose your outside edge and also at times the off stump to ones that might turn sharply. You have to be prepared to cop that and hope you get enough runs before that happens.Smith went on to confirm that “most of the times” you can’t pick the straighter one out of the hand, unlike a legspinner’s googly. If Jadeja is listening, he must be smiling. He has been the No. 2 to Ashwin, both in the ICC rankings and in the Test team, but he has made it a bit of a habit to go after the captain or the No. 1 batsman of the opposition. In the last series against Australia, he dismissed captain Michael Clarke five times out of the six he got out. Against England this season, he took out Alastair Cook six times. When South Africa came to India in 2015-16, he planted several doubts in the heads of two of their batsmen, captain Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis, flattening their stumps as they padded up.It’s the captain again. Smith has had his problems with left-arm spin. If there is any doubt, Jadeja exposes it ruthlessly with his accuracy and his relentlessness. These are two careers that are at their peak after they began to mend almost simultaneously. Over the coming month or so, one of them could hit a temporary bump.
