Kohli: the most prolific batsman after 200 ODIs

The India captain now slots in behind only Sachin Tendulkar for the most centuries in ODI cricket

Bharath Seervi22-Oct-2017Virat Kohli is reaching new highs with almost every match, with every ODI century. In the series opener against New Zealand at the Wankhede, the India captain brought up his 31st century playing in his 200th ODI. He became only the second batsman after AB de Villiers to get to a century in the 200th ODI. He’s now the second-highest hundreds scorer in ODI history behind only Sachin Tendulkar’s 49 tons. Kohli has got there playing just 200 games. No other batsman has had better career figures than Kohli after their 200th ODI.

With 8888 runs at average of 55.55 and 31 centuries, Kohli has the most runs, best average and highest number of centuries for any batsman when completing 200 ODIs. Previously de Villiers was the most prolific batsman in his first 200 ODIs, having 8621 runs at 54.56 with 24 centuries. Currently, Hashim Amla has 26 centuries in just 158 matches with 7381 runs at 51.25. Among India players Sourav Ganguly had the most runs (7747) and joint-most centuries with Tendulkar (18) at that stage of the career. The Indian duo averaged 43.03 and 41.74 respectively at that point of their careers. In getting to his 31st century, in humid conditions, Kohli batted almost the whole innings – he came in in the sixth over and was dismissed in the 50th. The second-highest scorer for India made 84 runs fewer than Kohli. Kohli’s contribution of 43.21% of the runs India scored in this innings was his second-highest contribution percentage-wise among his 12 century innings in the first innings. This was the fourth time India scored less than 300 in first innings of an ODI that included a century by Kohli, and three of these instances have come in last 24 months.

Kohli’s numbers have only got better and better as his career has progressed. He had averaged 45.67 in his first block of 50 ODIs, 51.81 in the second, 57.83 in the third and 68.10 in the fourth set of 50 ODIs. The past two years – 2016 and 2017 – have been particularly highly productive for him: he has amassed 2057 runs in 34 innings in this period, at an average of 82.28 and a strike rate at 99.03 including ten centuries.ESPNcricinfo LtdPreviously, Kohli had more of an influence while chasing targets. But in recent years, he has contributed in both innings. Till end of 2015, his second innings average (61.34) was 22.31 runs better than in the first (39.03). But the numbers have changed. Since 2016 he averages 74.58 when batting first and 89.38 when chasing, which is a difference of 14.80. He had taken 7.67 innings per century in first innings’ of games till 2015 but that rate has gone down to 4.67 since then. Last year he had made 50-plus in each of the four innings in which India batted first, this year he has done it five times in 10 innings.

A rare hit wicket and the oldest captain

Plays of the day from the group B match between UAE and Zimbabwe played in Nelson

Brydon Coverdale in Nelson19-Feb-2015Drop of the day
After Elton Chigumbura sent UAE in to bat, he wanted early wickets to justify his decision. Duly Tendai Chatara drew an edge behind from Andri Berenger in the second over of the match, only to see the wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor spill a reasonably straightforward chance. The ricochet off the gloves also allowed Berenger off the mark. He went on to score 22.No-ball of the day
In Chatara’s next over he again picked up an edge behind off Berenger, this time taken by Taylor behind the stumps. But alarm bells began to ring when umpire Johan Cloete asked Berenger to hold on while he checked on a no-ball. Replays confirmed that Chatara had overstepped by a fraction and Berenger was given another let-off.Blow of the day
UAE might not be renowned as having express fast bowlers, but there were still some concerns for the Zimbabwe batsmen during the early overs of their chase. Amjad Javed banged in a bouncer that rose higher than Sikandar Raza expected; he tried to hook and was struck flush on the front of the helmet. Befitting the name of their country, the UAE players were united in their appeal for caught-behind, but umpire Cloete ruled correctly that there was no bat before helmet.Unexpected wicket of the day
Regis Chakabva had laboured for 35 from 62 balls when he fell in unfortunate fashion, playing back to the offspin of Mohammad Tauqir, working the ball off his pads to leg, and then slipping over and disturbing his stumps with his left foot. It was the eighth time a batsman had been out hit wicket in a World Cup match. The last was also a Zimbabwean: Vusi Sibanda against Ireland in Kingston in 2007.Record of the day
At 43 years and 32 days, Tauqir became the oldest captain in World Cup history. The previous record holder was Steve Lubbers of the Netherlands, who was 42 years and 347 days when he last led his side in the 1996 World Cup. Three men have led their teams in non-World Cup ODIs while older than Tauqir: England’s Norman Gifford, Hong Kong’s Rahul Sharma, and Tauqir’s UAE team-mate Khurram Khan.

We are ready India… No wait

A Pakistani superman, a Pakistani Panesar and Shahid Afridi lookalikes – the action was happening off the field at Birmingham

Abid Raza11-Jun-2013Choice of game
Taking an early lunch break on 6th May, I was bitterly disappointed to find that online tickets for the biggest game of the Champions Trophy had been sold out within two hours. But I did manage the next big thing – Pakistan v South Africa. After defeats for both in their respective opening games, this was a veritable do-or-die match.Team supported
The earliest memory that I have of my childhood is of my brother jumping off the sofa and landing on the glass table in front and shattering it when Miandad hit six in Sharjah. Ever since, it’s been Team Pakistan for me all the way.Key Performer
In my opinion Ryan McLaren clearly stole the show. In the absence of Dale Steyn and Albie Morkel, I thought the Saffers would have no steam upfront, but Mclaren put paid to such hopes. His return in the batting Powerplay, when Misbah-ul-Haq was shuffling restlessly in his crease to break free, ensured Pakistan wouldn’t pull off a late charge. One thing I’d have changed
Nasir Jamshed’s untimely dismissal. Misbah joined Jamshed at the fall of Shoaib Malik’s wicket and after a few careful overs, both began to middle the ball. Jamshed was looking especially good in his knock of 42. His mishit came at a crucial time in Pakistan’s chase and left Misbah a mountain too high to climb.Face-off I relished
Amla v Ajmal – two colossi of the modern game squaring off in a classic battle. Following a bit of cat and mouse gameplay, Amla went after Ajmal with some reverse-sweeps. Finally, Ajmal had the last laugh when he induced a false shot to deny Amla a well-deserved century.Wow moment
Misbah’s acrobatic catch late in Saffers’ innings was unbelievable. He had already had a splendid day in the field, saving a number of runs, and effecting two run-outs as well. But his blinder to dismiss David Miller off Junaid Khan’s bowling was simply amazing. Seeing a 39 year-old leaping to intercept, and pouching it with both hands was priceless.Shot of the day
For me this was AB de Villiers’ effortless flick off Malik for a six in his first over. For the first time ever, I almost touched an international cricket ball as it fell a few inches short of my out outstretched hands. If this was a fairytale I might have caught AB and lived to tell the tale. Alas, that was not to be.Crowd
Even crowds in Karachi and Peshawar are not as partisan as they were here in Edgbaston. Every wicket taken, every run scored and even Wahab Riaz’s glares at the batsman were greeted with deafening noise. Being in the same spectators block as Cricket meant a whole day of chanting and dancing to the tunes of ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’. We were the originators of a number of Mexican waves that were consistently doing the rounds. This kept us entertained even when the Pakistani batsmen were inducing major yawns in the crowd.Fancy dress index
Edgbaston was painted green today. A sea of Pakistani fans turned up in various interesting looks, in dresses to show their unmistakable affiliation. There was a Pakistani superman, a Pakistani Panesar and Shahid Afridi lookalikes.Entertainment
The party atmosphere was amplified by the official drummers all around the ground. Every wicket and every six was followed by heart-pounding drumming. It really knocked our socks off.Banner of the day:
A banner which at the start of the match read ‘V R Ready India’ turned to ‘V R Not ready India’ by the end of this woeful day for Pakistan.Overall
For me this was a great ODI experience. The wonderful venue, boisterous crowd and some quality cricket gave us much to cheer about. However the sad end to the Pakistan innings did dampen my enthusiasm, which is why I will award this game 7 out of 10. Too bad I chose the wrong game to bring the Mrs. along to make her a convert. Never mind, may be next time.

The Kotla encore

Stats highlights from India’s five-wicket win in Delhi, which puts them 1-0 up in the three-Test series

S Rajesh09-Nov-2011

  • India’s win continues their excellent home record in recent years. Since the beginning of 2008, India have won 11 Tests and lost only two out of 20 home matches. No team has a better record at home. It was also India’s 11th Test win at the Feroz Shah Kotla – their win-loss record at this ground is 11-6, which makes it India’s fifth-best among venues where they’ve played at least ten Tests.
  • India’s total of 276 is their third-highest in a successful fourth-innings run-chase in Tests, and their tenth such score in excess of 200. Six of those scores have come in the last four years. It’s also the joint second-highest in Delhi, and quite coincidentally, it’s exactly the score that West Indies had achieved to win at the same venue 24 years ago.
  • This is the 18th occasion that India have won a Test after conceding a lead at the end of the teams’ first innings. Thirteen of those instances have been at home. The last time they achieved it was against Australia in Mohali in 2010 when they won a nailbiter, chasing down 216 with one wicket in hand. VVS Laxman was unbeaten on that occasion too. (Click here for a list of matches where India won after batting first and here for a list of matches when India fielded first.)
  • R Ashwin became only the third India player to win the Man of the Match award on debut. The previous one had been RP Singh, for match figures of 5 for 164 in a high-scoring draw in Faisalabad in 2006. (Click here for the full list. Before 1990, this award wasn’t declared for all matches.)
  • Sachin Tendulkar missed out on his 100th international century yet again, but during the course of his 76 he became the highest run-getter in fourth innings of Test matches, going past Rahul Dravid. Tendulkar, though, averages 39.86 in fourth innings, compared to Dravid’s 41.86. Tendulkar also became the highest run-getter at the Feroz Shah Kotla, going past Dilip Vengsarkar. Vengsarkar, though, averages almost 22 runs more than Tendulkar at this ground.
  • Laxman, meanwhile, continued his fine run in fourth innings. Since the beginning of 2010, his fourth-innings scores read thus: 103*, 73*, 32*, 3*, 56, 4, and 58*.

Delhi

Delhi finally got it all together last year. One of the big anomalies of Indian domestic cricket – why the most talented team couldn’t win the Ranji Trophy – was eliminated. And unlike the last three champions – Railways were relegated during their title defence, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai just about avoided the ignominy, Delhi seem to have the required class and stability to take themselves to the next level. While there is a change in the leadership – Aakash Chopra takes over from Mithun Manhas as the captain, most of the other personnel is the same this time. What they will look forward to is the comeback of the mercurial Ashish Nehra, who did well in the IPL. They can also look forward to a good draw too – the dangerous teams in their group being Saurashtra, semi-finalists last year, and Mumbai. Punjab, Rajasthan, Orissa and Hyderabad are strictly dangerous floaters. They play four away matches, and three at home. Feroz Shah Kotla, though, will be available for only one of those.Vijay Dahiya, the coach, knows the team well, and worked wonders for them in the season just after his retirement. He will want to do more of the same this year, a year when after a long time Delhi will start the favourites. What they did last season
It was an almost perfect season for Delhi last year. And even when it was not perfect, they managed to escape without burns. They were bowled out for 119 on the first day of the Ranji Trophy, but came back to clean Rajasthan up for 89, and win the match by 172 runs. In their fourth match, against Himachal Pradesh, when they were bowled out for 75 in the first innings, they managed to hold on for a draw, while following on.They managed crushing victories against Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, and also first-innings points against Saurashtra and Mumbai, which took them to the semi-finals. The fighting spirit resurfaced in the knockouts. In the semi-final, Gautam Gambhir led a 272-run chase in the final innings. In the final, Chopra and Rajat Bhatia scored centuries to take them from 36 for 4 to 290, still a 52-run first-innings deficit. Another Gambhir century in the second innings took Delhi to the title, their first in 16 years.Five of Delhi’s batsmen crossed 500 runs – Chopra, Gambhir, Bhatia, Mithun Manhas and Shikhar Dhawan. Two of them – Chopra and Gambhir – crossed 700, and were also Nos 2 and 3 respectively on overall run-getters’ list. Bhatia more than chipped in with the ball, taking 26 wickets at an average of 12.65. The 17-year-old Pradeep Sangwan was Delhi’s main strike bowler, with 33 wickets at 19.24.Men to watch
Nehra, just for endearment value, should be the man to watch out for. He has spent two seasons unfit, and in and out of the team, but his comeback during the IPL was superb. Whether he can carry it to a format where he will be bowling 20 overs by himself during a day will
be interesting to see. Virat Kohli, who led India U-19 to the World Cup triumph last year, is definitely the one for the future – for Delhi, and possibly for India. Dhawan would want to carry on from his last season’s form too. And then there are the strong seasoned heads for Delhi: Bhatia, one of the most valuable allrounders on the domestic circuit, Chopra, and Manhas.

Orissa

Orissa were the surprise package in Group B in 2007-08, winning two successive games to upset everybody’s calculations. However, they failed to extend their dream run and crashed out in stunning fashion against Punjab before the semi-finals. Orissa have a new coach, Venkatapathy Raju, the former Indian spinner, and they should hope to do better than last season. Orissa have retained Shiv Sunder Das, the former India opener, as captain. Das replaced Pravanjan Mullick during the previous season to help the side retain its place in the Super League. Most of Orissa’s performances still revolve around Das and Debasis Mohanty, easily the two most recognisable faces in the team, but with no players lost to the ICL, the side needs its youngsters to step up.What they did last season
Orissa finished fourth in Group B last season, winning two games out of six. Their first match was an innings defeat to Uttar Pradesh and after losing a thriller to Andhra in round three, after the fourth round they sat at the bottom. Then they got into form with an outright away win over Hyderabad, followed by a six-wicket win over Bengal with more than a day and a half to spare. Suddenly Orissa had ten points from four matches. However, that seven-wicket loss to Punjab will sting; in their second innings, Orissa were bowled out for 76 – VRV Singh took a hat-trick – with the last nine entries on the scorecard reading 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 4, 6, 0, 0*. Orissa signed off their season with a draw against Baroda.Statistically, Das was again Orissa’s highest run-getter with 394 at 39.40, with one hundred. Coming in at second was Pinninti Jayachandra with 286 at 31.77. There were only three centuries all season, indicative of Orissa’s failure to go deep. As for the bowlers, Debasis Mohanty finished with 30 while his namesake, Basanth, had 20. Preetamjit Das, a left-arm medium-pacer, came in third with 15.Men to watch
Mohanty, at 32, remains Orissa’s leader of the pack. His assets remain an ability to control his swing – this did it for Bengal last season – and the experience he brings to the side is invaluable. Like Das, another player with national experience, Mohanty’s success could well dictate how Orissa progress in 2008-09. Preetamjit, who took a five-wicket haul in his fifth first-class match, was steady without being spectacular last season and should get plenty of opportunities. Young Halhadar Das, the wicketkeeper, notched a maiden first-class century last season and was competent behind the stumps. He is one of the more promising Orissa players.

Railways

Three seasons ago, Railways stirringly came back from the brink of relegation to the national championship. That fairytale story made for plenty of copy in Indian journalist circles, and rightly so. Then came the descent: the next year they were relegated to the Plate League. They’re back in the Super League by virtue of making the Plate finals last season, and will need to be at the top of their game to avoid relegation again.Sanjay Bangar lead well last season in the absence of Murali Kartik, away on national duty, and his role with Railways will always be special. He topped the wickets tally with 38, 17 more than the next best, new-ball bowler Harvinder Singh, and also scored 293 runs from seven matches at 32.55. Railways’ batting clicked for most of the season: apart from their star, Bangar, Harshad Rawle, Mahesh Rawat, Sanjib Sanyal and Karan Sharma all scored over 300 runs at over 60.00. Life will be tougher in the Super League, so a repeat of such impressive numbers will be needed.Railways have plenty of experience in Bangar, Amit Pagnis, Raja Ali and Harvinder Singh, which should keep them in good stead as they aim to recapture at least a little bit of the glory years. What they did last season
Railways topped the Plate League’s Group B with three wins from five matches, without a loss. They began by routing Jammu & Kashmir by an innings and 88 runs in less than three days and their second win, over Jharkhand, also took three days. To enter the Super League, they managed a 45-run first-innings lead over Kerala in Nagpur and then denied Kerala’s best efforts to force a result. In the final Railways, led by Bangar’s six-wicket haul, fought valiantly on the final day but Gujarat hung on for a one-wicket win to become the Plate League champions. Bangar took eleven wickets in the match but was unable to prevent Gujarat from winning a nailbiter in Mumbai.Men to watch
As always, Bangar and Kartik will be relied on heavily. But there are some youngsters who Railways can turn to. One such is Rawle, who moved from Mumbai before last season and scored 528 runs from seven matches to help Railways get promoted. Mahesh Rawat, the wicketkeeper who switched from Haryana and also represented the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, impressed too. His exposure to international players in the IPL may lift his game this year. Madan Yadav, a left-arm spinner, turned in parsimonious figures of 22.4-12-22-4 in the first innings against J&K and will need further such outings to support his seniors.

PSG beaten in court by Gianluigi Buffon with French side told to pay €250k to legendary goalkeeper

Paris Saint-Germain have lost their court appeal against Gianluigi Buffon and must pay the Italian €250,000 due to a tax clause in his contract.

PSG ordered to pay Buffon €250k over tax clauseLegal battle stemmed from goalkeeper’s 2018 contractCourt rejected Les Parisians appeal on July 10Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , the Paris Court of Appeal ruled that PSG must pay Buffon €250,000. The case centred around a clause in Buffon’s spell at the club from 2018-19 when he joined PSG from Juventus. The clause stated that PSG would cover 50 per cent of any tax assessed by the Italian Revenue Agency on income earned in 2018, up to a maximum of €250,000. Buffon triggered the clause after Italy’s tax authority assessed his 2018 earnings at over €1.2 million. The Ligue 1 giants appealed a prior court ruling but lost again on July 10, finalising their obligation to pay the amount.

Although the 2006 World Cup winner only spent one season at PSG, legal issues stemming from the cross-border nature of his earnings dragged on for years. The clause had been added to ease Buffon's return to Italy, but when the French side contested its enforcement, it resulted in legal battles. Buffon’s legal team sought an additional €25,000 in damages for what they called PSG’s “illegal resistance,” but that request was denied. Still, the main victory went to the goalkeeper, who is now Italy’s national team delegation leader.

DID YOU KNOW?

The case dragged on for over five years, during which PSG had previously been ruled against by the French Labour Court. Buffon played 25 games for PSG in all competitions in his single season in the French capital, featuring 17 times in Ligue 1.

The ruling officially closes the legal chapter between the French club and the Italian legend. For Buffon, it’s a moral and contractual win, underlining the importance of detailed clauses in cross-border sports contracts. PSG, meanwhile, avoid any further penalties but face renewed scrutiny over their handling of contract terms with past players.
