James Fuller became the 15th player to take a hat-trick for Hampshire, and the first for anyone in the Bob Willis Trophy, to help his side to a sensational innings victory over Surrey.Fast bowler Fuller (4-17) dismissed Laurie Evans, Gus Atkinson and Morne Morkel in successive deliveries to take Hampshire’s first hat-trick since Kyle Abbott against Worcestershire two years ago. The feat came as Hampshire bowled Surrey out for 74 to win by an innings and 52 runs at Arundel.Hampshire have now won back-to-back matches in the competition and took 21 points from the contest, while winless Surrey claimed three.Hampshire had been targeting a building a big lead, quickly, in the morning before hoping Mason Crane could spin them to victory. That wasn’t how things materialised.Firstly, their hopes of expanding their lead was thwarted by rain showers, which lopped an hour, and 15 overs, out of the proceedings. Secondly, they lost wickets quickly, without boosting their lead considerably – as they were bowled out for 298, leading to the draw to become the favourite result. But their plans were put back on track thanks to some clinical bowling with the new ball – which built pressure – before Fuller produced his magic.Mark Stoneman was given a life on nought when he was dropped by Tom Alsop at second slip, but at the other end Wheal made the breakthrough when Ryan Patel nicked behind to Lewis McManus.Alsop made amends for his earlier butterfingers by holding his next chance off Stoneman’s edge. Will Jacks quickly followed when he was lbw to Ian Holland, who took a six-wicket haul in the first innings. It only took Crane two deliveries to show off his danger when he pinned Scott Borthwick in front, to leave Surrey 27 for 4. That became 39 for 5 when Jason Roy was lbw to Fuller after tea. It was a precursor for what was to come for Fuller as he turned a potential win into an almost sure-fire thing.Former Middlesex allrounder Fuller only bowled two overs in the first innings after he was smashed for 17 off an over, but showed promise by starting his second-innings spell with two maidens. Then he burst into life. Pace did for Sussex loanee Evans, who nicked to Alsop at first slip, before Atkinson was lbw and Morkel turned around to find his off stump two yards back while leaving. Amazingly, it wasn’t Fuller’s maiden first-class treble – having taken one for Gloucestershire against Worcestershire in 2013.After a seven-over blockout from Matt Dunn and Jamie Smith, the former was adjudged lbw to Crane. And Hampshire’s victory was confirmed when Amar Virdi was lbw to Crane.Earlier, Alsop had scored a magnificent half-century on day three but fell to Virdi for 87 when he edged to a jubilant Borthwick at first slip. Harry Came fell two balls later when he was pinned on the crease, before Dunn had Fuller plumb in front with the first ball on the next over and Holland soon chopped on to his own stumps.Lewis McManus picked out Jason Roy on the square-leg boundary, while debutant Tom Scriven was bowled attempting to yahoo offspinner Virdi over cow corner. Virdi now has 14 wickets in the Bob Willis Trophy – the second-best haul for a spinner in the country – after his 6 for 101.Dunn rounded off the innings by sending Wheal’s middle stump cart-wheeling, although Crane had played a good hand with a shot-a-ball 25 not out.

Nottingham Forest must bin Golden Boy nominee who’s worth less than Boly

Nottingham Forest have had their fair share of stars at the City Ground in recent times, with a new generation of supporters able to witness some brilliant players on a weekly basis.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo have excelled beyond all expectations for the Reds, subsequently resulting in huge links with big-money moves away from the Reds ahead of the summer transfer window.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

However, not all of the players the club have recruited have been a hit, with Harry Arter the main example, still pocketing a huge weekly wage despite not featuring for the club since 2021 under Chris Hughton.

Another player has also struggled since his move to the East Midlands during the Championship days, resulting in numerous temporary stints away from the City Ground, suffering a huge drop in his market value as a result.

Loic Mbe Soh’s stats during his time at Nottingham Forest

During the summer of 2020, Forest spent big in the hope of building on the seventh-placed finish in the season prior, but unfortunately, a number of the deals proved to be a disaster.

In particular, the deal to sign centre-back Loic Mbe Soh, which was confirmed as an undisclosed fee. The move appeared a significant one at the time after luring him away from French giants Paris Saint-Germain, the emerging talent having been named as a nominee for FIFA's Golden Boy award in 2020.

He arrived with huge potential to take the Reds’ defence to the next level, but unfortunately for both parties, the deal never worked out.

In his near four years at Forest, the Frenchman has only managed to feature a total of 13 times, scoring one goal in the 2-1 defeat against Middlesbrough in January 2021.

However, he’s since been sent on various loan moves to sides such as Guingamp and Almere City, with Mbe Soh struggling to prove any value for the fee paid for him by the Forest hierarchy.

With his contract set to expire at the end of June, the 22-year-old will undoubtedly depart on a free – an unsurprising decision given his rapid decline in form and value.

Loic Mbe Soh’s market value in 2024

Nearly four years on from his move to the Reds, the defender has seen his market value drop from £4.2m to now just £1.7m, as per Transfermarkt – a decrease of 60%, around 20% per year spent in the East Midlands.

As a result of his drop, he’s now worth less than 33-year-old centre-back Willy Boly, who has a value of £2.1m – despite his brilliant end-of-season form that has seen him be rewarded with a new one-year contract extension.

Whilst it’s a disappointment that Mbe Soh has never kicked on at Forest, it’s clear that the club’s rapid success under Steve Cooper has seen them outgrow the defender’s current ability, with an exit needed for the youngster in order for him to reach the potential shown during his time at the Parc des Princes.

However, despite the woeful dealing to sign the French talent must be an example for the club to deal with caution in the summer to avoid anymore repeats of unsuccessful business that could plunge the Reds into yet more financial problems.

Leeds players on combined £165k-a-week may quit if they don’t get promoted

Leeds United could lose five players this summer should they not be promoted to the Premier League come the end of the campaign, in what would be a major blow for Daniel Farke.

Leeds' automatic promotion hopes hanging by a thread

Heading into the final week of the season, Leeds and Farke are praying for a miracle to secure automatic promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking.

A wretched run of form has seen them slip off the pace, and they must now rely on Ipswich Town to drop points. The Tractor Boys are behind Leeds only on goal difference, but have a game in hand on Farke's side and know that four points will secure them back-to-back promotions.

Should they find themselves in the playoffs, they could come up against in-form Norwich City or the dangerous Southampton, meaning that promotion via that route is by no means guaranteed. And now, they have been warned just what the price for failure could be.

Five could leave if Championship confirmed

As per a report from Football Insider, five Leeds United players could look for a way out should they be consigned to the Championship for another season.

Firstly, currently on loan pair Jack Harrison and Max Wober would look to depart on a permanent basis, with both players having spent this season playing in top flight leagues across Europe and clearly too good for England's second tier.

However, three more men who stayed put this season could be off too. The first of those is Crysensio Summerville, who was named Championship Player of the Year and who has attracted attention from Liverpool and Aston Villa.

As per Football Insider, he "could be one of the first names out of the door" should Leeds not be in the top flight next season. He could be joined by talented teen Archie Gray, who is also on the radar of top clubs in the Premier League including Tottenham after a fine breakthrough season.

Both youngsters leaving would come as a major blow to Farke and the Elland Road faithful, and another youngster could push for a move away too in the form of Wilfried Gnonto, who attempted to leave the club last summer.

The Italian is thought to be valued at around £30m, though it remains to be seen who will test Leeds' resolve with a bid this summer.

Wilfried Gnonto

The departure of all five would save Leeds approximately £165,000 per week in wages, but that is largely as a result of Jack Harrison's massive £90k per week wages, with both Gray and Summerville among the lowest earners in the squad.

It would certainly come as a massive blow to Farke, who has previously professed his love for Gray in particular and would have to find a way to replace two key members of his starting XI ahead of the new campaign.

Of course, Leeds will be hoping that, through securing promotion, that never happens.

Clement must unleash £6.1m-rated Rangers gem alongside Yilmaz

If Glasgow Rangers win their final eight Premiership fixtures, the club will secure just a second league title since 2011.

A clash against Celtic at Ibrox today is arguably the most important Old Firm derby clash in recent memory and three points could deliver a significant psychological blow to their opponents.

Philippe Clement could see a few players return to the starting XI this afternoon, most notably Ridvan Yilmaz and Abdallah Sima.

Ridvan Yilmaz could be fit to face Celtic

As Clement explained during his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Gers are "not sure yet" whether Yilmaz will be fit to feature, but it would be a huge boost if he were to make the starting XI.

Yilmaz starting could be so important for Rangers, as his attacking abilities could be crucial for any success the Gers look to have against Celtic.

In the Premiership this season, Yilmaz has created six big chances along with averaging 1.7 key passes per game, with this attacking output hard to replace should he miss the game.

Yilmaz started the previous Old Firm tie back in December, winning 100% of his ground duels while also succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts, suggesting he can make a difference at both ends of the pitch.

If he is even 80% fit, Clement should still unleash him and hope he can last as long as possible, such is his influence recently.

Sima made a brief cameo against Hibs last weekend, and he is another player who the Belgian will be hoping is 100% ready to face Celtic this afternoon.

Abdallah Sima’s statistics for Rangers

The winger was in stunning form for the Light Blues during the first half of the season. Exceeding expectations, Sima found the back of the net 15 times for the Ibrox side, chipping in with two assists, and it was clear he was enjoying his football.

Disaster struck when the player was representing Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in January, suffering a hamstring injury in training which kept him out for the next 13 matches and potentially derailing the progress Rangers made.

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

Thankfully, Oscar Cortes and Fabio Silva both stepped up to the plate and deputised for Sima fairly well, but now that the Brighton gem is back, he should be slotted straight back into the starting XI against Celtic.

The winger is currently valued at €7.2m (£6.1m) according to Football Transfers, with his value increasing during his spell in Glasgow due to his excellent displays.

The 22-year-old was previously hailed as a “fantastic prospect” during his spell playing for Slavia Prague by talent scout Jacek Kulig, building on this talent to become a regular for Rangers when he has been fit this season.

Rangers loanee Abdallah Sima.

Sima and Yilmaz could form a wonderful partnership down the left flank against Celtic and this could be key if Clement wishes to emerge from the game with all three points.

The title won't be won today but the psychological blow of a defeat could be damaging indeed.

'Liverpool should be at the front of the queue' – Jamie Carragher hands Arne Slot transfer advice as he reveals his top target for Reds

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged the Reds to be at the "front of the queue" for Anthony Gordon this summer.

Carragher has urged the Reds to get to the front of the queue for Anthony Gordon, who has been linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer window. The prospect was initially floated to help the Magpies keep within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, and would have seen Joe Gomez move the other way. Now, though, it has been reported that Gordon has had his 'head turned' by interest from Arne Slot's side.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool have yet to make a first-team signing this summer and Carragher believes that Gordon would be a perfect addition. The England international enjoyed a stunning campaign under Eddie Howe in 2023/24, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists in the Premier League.

WHAT CARRAGHER SAID

Jamie Carragher was speaking on behalf of Sky Sports as part of its start of season football campaign which brings together 92 passionate football fans from each team across the Premier League & EFL to share their hopes for the 2024/25 season.

He said: “Anthony Gordon would be a good signing for any team, he’s been a great signing for Newcastle. I cannot believe he didn’t get more minutes than he did at EURO 2024, I thought we were crying out for pace in the attack, and he adds that. I’ve known Anthony for a long time because he doesn’t live too far from me, I know a few of his relatives, so I’ve always been a huge fan of Anthony Gordon.

“If Newcastle are having problems with PSR, I would like Liverpool to be at the front of that [queue for Anthony Gordon] because he could be a real top player, he can go to another level."

Celtic now make it clear they want “tenacious” player in permanent transfer

As the Scottish Premiership title race hangs in the balance, Celtic have reportedly used the international break to turn their focus towards their summer transfer plans.

Celtic transfer news

There's no doubt that Celtic will need to have a busy summer transfer window if they are to ensure that Rangers don't push on and away in Philippe Clement's first full season in charge. Their main priority may well be finding a replacement for Joe Hart, who announced his decision to retire at the end of the season back in February.

That said, the name mentioned in that regard has so far been Etienne Vaessen from RKC Waalwijk as the Bhoys look towards an unorthodox option perhaps rather than the obvious choice.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Away from the goalkeeping department, meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers and co reportedly want to turn towards a more familiar face this summer. According to A Bola, Celtic have made it clear that they want to sign Paulo Bernardo on a permanent basis this summer.

Celtic eyeing second move for "incredible" player after failed January deal

The Scottish giants are not letting this one go…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 22, 2024

The Benfica loanee has impressed at Celtic Park this season and has a buy option of €7.5m (£6m) inserted in his loan deal. The Scottish giants, though keen to secure the central midfielder permanently, will reportedly look to negotiate that price tag down when the window swings open.

Celtic have a solid relationship with Benfica, of course, after the Bhoys signed Filipe Jota for a reported £6.5m in 2022 following a successful loan spell at the club. Whilst the winger may now be at Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad, there's no taking away the impressive negotiations that Celtic had with Benfica.

"Tenacious" Bernardo has earned permanent move

At just 22-years-old, Bernardo is quickly becoming more and more of an important player for Celtic, who must do everything in their power to turn his loan move from Benfica into a permanent deal this summer.

With just 11 starts to his name in the Scottish Premiership this season, however, Bernardo will no doubt hope that a permanent move comes with a fixed starting place at Celtic Park. There are certainly signs that may be the case too, given that he has started Celtic's last three games.

What's more, Rodgers has so far been a fan throughout his loan spell, singing Bernardo's praises via The Herald back in January. Rodgers said: “It is all patience. Sometimes at big clubs there is no patience with young players.

“You can see him growing and developing. When you have young players that is what tends to happen if their attitude is right, and their mentality is right. He has come in in these last few games and created goals and scored goals and he has put his foot in too. He is tenacious. Absolutely delighted for him. It is now about consistency.”

England's fringe players have 'raised the benchmark' – Eoin Morgan

Captain impressed with debutants, who have ‘raised the bar’ for returning regulars

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2019England’s fringe players have “raised the benchmark” for those rested from the T20I series in New Zealand, according to captain Eoin Morgan. At least five first-choice players were rested from the T20 leg of the tour, with Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer all likely to be in England’s first-choice XI come the T20 World Cup in Australia next year. With Mark Wood, David Willey and Joe Root also missing out, there were opportunities for six debutants in the T20 series, as well as those who have been in and out of the national team over the past four years, like James Vince, Sam Billings and Dawid Malan. And Morgan said that the new faces in the side had created a selection headache ahead of the three-match series in South Africa in February.”It creates a really good headache for us when it comes to selection,” Morgan said.”We are further ahead than we thought and the guys on this tour who will probably miss out on South Africa have raised that benchmark for guys who come back in.”They are now almost expected to score runs and expected to do well because of opportunities given and taken by these guys.”Morgan had the opportunity to see one of those fringe players up close in the fourth T20I, when he shared a 182-run partnership with former Middlesex team-mate Dawid Malan.ALSO READ: Will England dare to leave Malan out again?Malan struck an unbeaten 103 off 51 balls, meaning he has passed fifty in six of his nine T20I innings. That knock took his average in the format to 57.25, but he came in for thinly-veiled criticism in Morgan’s post-match press conference for failing to attempt to steal a bye off the final ball of the innings.Malan had been at the non-striker’s end for the last ball of the 20th over in Napier – a bouncer which Sam Billings missed – but decided against scrambling through for a run with wicketkeeper Tim Seifert stood back.”I think giving guys that common goal and watching them strive towards it is the biggest indicator,” Morgan said. “If we get guys that are not running off the last ball of the game because they want to get a not out, there’s something to address.”The debutant who pressed his case best in the series was Sam Curran, who took six wickets and bowled with control across all three phases of the game, while chipping in with the bat in the rain-reduced game in Auckland. The three new faces with the ball – Pat Brown, Matt Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood – had a mixed time. Brown’s slower balls was punished in Wellington, where he conceded 32 in his two overs, but his economy rate overall (9.84) was only just over the average runs-per-over for the series (9.49).Parkinson took five wickets in his six overs, though conceded 61 runs, and would have hoped for more of an opportunity to prove himself. Mahmood had a chastening time, leaking 115 runs in 10 overs, though was England’s tightest bowler at Eden Park. And with the bat, Tom Banton showed flashes of brilliance in his top-order cameos, while Lewis Gregory faced 19 balls and bowled four overs across his five games.

Arteta must axe "disappointing" Arsenal dud who earns 5x more than Toney

After spending years enduring mediocre football with little indication of progression, Arsenal finally look like a side ready to take their place atop English football once again.

Mikel Arteta has taken his side from eighth just a few years ago into back-to-back Premier League title races and within one match of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The squad has dramatically improved under the Spaniard as well, with the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Ben White joining during his tenure.

However, there are still a few players who should be moved on this summer, one of whom significantly more than transfer target Ivan Toney earns at Brentford.

How much Ivan Toney earns at Brentford

Toney joined the Bees in August 2020 for a fee of £5m – £10m with add-ons – from League One side Peterborough.

It took no time for the Englishman to get settled into life in west London, and by the end of his debut season, he had scored 33 goals, provided ten assists in just 52 games, and helped the club fulfil their long-term ambition of returning to the top-flight.

In the three seasons since, the Northampton-born nine has scored 39 goals and provided 11 assists in 79 games for Thomas Frank's ambitious side.

With the amount of money in the Premier League these days and Toney's undeniable importance to the team, you'd be forgiven for thinking that his weekly wage must be somewhere near £100k-per-week – well, you'd be wrong.

In fact, according to Capology, the 27-year-old "monster", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, earns just £20k-per-week, and while that's an absurd amount of money for the average person, it's about a third of the average salary in the league, which is around £60k-per-week.

To put that into perspective, Arsenal's current first-choice striker, Gabriel Jesus, earns around £265k-per-week. However, there is another player in N5 who, despite being significantly less important, still earns considerably more than Toney.

How much Eddie Nketiah earns at Arsenal

Yes, it's Eddie Nketiah, a player who has been fighting for a place in Arteta's first team for several years now, who earns five times more than Toney.

The former Chelsea youth product signed a long-term deal in North London in June 2022 following some impressive performances in the latter half of the 2021/22 campaign, which saw his wage increase to a whopping £100k-per-week at the Emirates.

Now, the Lewisham-born poacher certainly looked to be justifying his new pay packet for a period last season as he filled in for the absent Jesus. Still, his brace against Manchester United on January 22nd marked his final league goals of the campaign.

This season, the 24-year-old has managed just six goals in 32 appearances – including his hatrick against Sheffield United.

In all, the 5 foot 11 forward has scored 38 goals and provided ten assists in 163 games for the Gunners, which means he averages 0.29 goal involvements per match, a return which makes it hard to disagree with journalist Kaya Kaynak's assessment of Nketiah as being "disappointing."

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

It gets worse though, as if you include the 37 weeks of wages he has received this season on top of the £11m or so he has already earned while at Arsenal, it takes his total earnings to around £14.7m, which means that he has cost the Gunners about £386k-per-goal, £1.47m-per-assist, or £306k-per-goal-involvement.

Arteta's "magnificent" Arsenal signing is now worth more than Jesus

The talented ace hasn’t always looked at home but has been brilliant since the turn of the year.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 29, 2024

Ultimately, with the links to Toney once again heating up and Nketiah being used less and less by Arteta, it would make sense for the club to cut their losses with him in the summer and use the £100k-per-week they'd save for the far more efficient Brentford ace.
