Phillip Hughes has quit New South Wales and joined South Australia in the first major interstate move of the domestic contracting window. The signing of Hughes is a significant boost for the Redbacks, who did not win a Sheffield Shield match last summer and continued to rely heavily on their captain Michael Klinger for top-order runs.It will also add to the changing nature of the New South Wales batting order, with the former captain Simon Katich and the veteran opener Phil Jaques having both retired from the Blues after last season. Last summer, New South Wales were bursting with quality openers, with Katich, Hughes, Jaques, David Warner, Shane Watson and Nic Maddinson all part of their squad. But in 2012-13, they will be scratching around for a new opening combination, with Watson and Warner likely to spend most of the season on international duty and another potential opener, Usman Khawaja, also considering an interstate move. The Blues were one of the states most affected by the slashing of the number of national contracts as Hughes, Khawaja, Brett Lee, Doug Bollinger, Nathan Hauritz and Steven Smith all lost their Cricket Australia deals last week.Hughes, 23, has decided a move to Adelaide will help him in his push to regain a place in Australia’s Test side, after he was axed following the home series against New Zealand last season. Hughes was replaced by Ed Cowan in the national setup and while Cowan has shown promise, there could be an opening at the top of the order within the next year if he doesn’t begin turning his starts into substantial scores.”The next two years are the most critical in my cricket career and I’m not going to leave any stone unturned to make sure I put myself back into contention to play again for Australia,” Hughes said. “Missing a Cricket Australia contract this year is not the end of the world. In fact, in lots of ways it’s a new beginning.”Hughes burst on to the domestic scene in Australia at the age of 18, and in 38 first-class appearances for New South Wales he has scored 3360 runs at 52.50. He has also enjoyed a productive month with Worcestershire this year, having started the season with two one-day hundreds and continued with strong form in the Twenty20 competition.”The [Worcestershire] organisation, their support of me and my ability to focus 100% on my game has been a real eye-opener and my form with the bat has obviously benefited from it,” Hughes said. “That’s what I expect the move to Adelaide to also do for me, and I can’t wait to get there and settle in.”Hughes said he had enormous respect for his former Australia coach Tim Nielsen, who is now the head coach of the Emerging Redbacks programme, and the South Australia director of cricket Jamie Cox, who as a former national selector played a role in Hughes’ emergence as an international batsman. Cox said the addition of Hughes was a major boost for the South Australia squad.”It is fantastic for us to bring in someone of Phillip’s quality, and it works hand in hand with the opportunity that he is also looking for,” Cox said. “His record here at Adelaide Oval [two centuries and a fifty in three first-class games], playing against South Australia, is very good and we believe he will be a great asset for us at the top of the order. He is an extremely hard-working cricketer who wants to succeed at the highest level again, and we believe that his determination and focus will be a great example for our young cricketers.”The state associations have until the end of next week to finalise their contract lists for next summer, a process that was delayed by the protracted pay talks between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association. In other potential moves, Hauritz and Khawaja have both been linked with Queensland, while Western Australia confirmed they have approached the Tasmania wicketkeepers Tim Paine and Tom Triffitt. The Warriors are searching for a gloveman to replace Luke Ronchi, who moved to New Zealand at the end of last summer. The Western Australia coach Lachie Stevens told the that Michael Johnson, who kept wicket in five Shield matches last summer, had not been offered a new contract.

Carberry limps Hants along

Limping Michael Carberry helped Hampshire establish a sound first-innings position against Leicestershire and in the process justified his call to the England Lions squad

ScorecardMichael Carberry has earned a recall to the England Lions squad•Getty ImagesLimping Michael Carberry helped Hampshire establish a sound first-innings position against Leicestershire and in the process justified his call to the England Lions squad to face the West Indies next month. On a second day hindered by rain, Hampshire closed at 181 for 4 with Carberry needing the aid of a runner in making an unbeaten 73.This was in response to Leicestershire’s first-innings total of 234 all out, made in 99.2 overs after a late rally led by wicketkeeper Ned Eckersley’s diligent 34.Carberry, whose solitary England cap came two years ago, is only now fully recovered from blood clots on the lung, a condition which stopped him playing until July and at one stage threatened his life. But while the lung problem may be part of his past, Carberry still struggled while batting on another cloud-covered day because of a recurrence of a groin injury. It did not stop him hitting pace bowler Alex Wyatt for six and striking 13 fours in his 138-ball innings as Leicestershire failed to build on a promising start which saw Wyatt dismiss openers Sean Terry and Liam Dawson cheaply.Terry, son of the former Hampshire and England batsman Paul, marked his championship debut with a duck, caught in the slips in Wyatt’s first over. When Dawson was caught behind for 19, Hampshire were 25 for 2 but then Carberry was joined by stand-in captain Simon Katich in a stand of 124 for the third wicket.Katich edged Nadeem Malik to the wicketkeeper after making 54 and James Vince followed five runs later at 154, caught at slip by Ramnaresh Sarwan off Wyatt. But Carberry remained firm and with Sean Ervine saw Hampshire through to the close, at which point they were 53 behind with six wickets in hand. The persevering Wyatt ended the day with 3 for 63.Earlier Leicestershire resumed at 159 for 6 and added a further 75 around Eckersley’s important contribution from number eight, after the loss of Joshua Cobb after four overs of the day’s play. Left-arm spinner Dawson, who had taken three wickets overnight, added two more in Cobb and Wayne White to finish with career-best Championship figures of five for 29.David Balcombe, who has had an outstanding season so far, took only one wicket in the innings, that of Eckersley to a slip catch by Vince, and David Griffiths finished off Leicestershire when he had last man Wyatt held by wicketkeeper Michael Bates.

I made a few tactical errors – de Villiers

AB de Villiers’ bright start as South Africa’s limited-overs captain has hit a speed bump and it did so in embarrassing fashion for a man who prides himself on professionalism, athleticism and commitment to the cause.South Africa put on a barely believable and sometimes-comical fielding display, mixing terrific catches like Alviro Petersen’s leap on the boundary to dismiss Kumar Sangakkara with horrible gaffes such as Morne Morkel’s drop of Angelo Mathews. “We weren’t great in the field today,” de Villiers said. “We created a few chances that we didn’t take.”Usually energetic and committed in the field, South Africa appeared frantic and pressured as Sri Lanka built confidently during their chase of 300. Dinesh Chandimal and Thisara Perera attacked bad balls and ran well between the wickets, although they had one mix-up that could have had either of them dismissed. de Villiers said being under that sort of pressure had tested his ability to use his bowlers, and he felt he could have done it better.”I needed to take a few chances because we needed wickets and I thought the bowlers did really well on a good pitch. But I made a few tactical errors and used the wrong bowlers at the wrong time.”The decision to keep the spinners on against a fluent Perera was one such strategic mistake. “I thought the spinner could get us one,” he said. “We tried to bounce him but the ball wouldn’t come up. It was one of those pitches where it was not very easy to take wickets. We tried slower balls. I tried every single bowler in the team.”Wickets were always going to be hard to come by on a flat pitch, and de Villiers admitted South Africa had actually lost the game with the bat. After a speedy start, they were well placed to score over 300, but had to settle for 299 for 7. They lost four wickets for 47 runs and their lower-middle order was unable to score as freely as de Villiers had against a regrouped Sri Lankan attack that bowled with discipline.de Villiers accepted full responsibility for South Africa’s slowdown towards the end of their innings. “We should have got to 330 but I got out at a very bad stage. We needed a partnership there.”de Villiers was bowled for 96 by a Perera slower ball in the 41st over with South Africa on 250 for 5. Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson and Vernon Philander are capable of big hitting but were forced to play a more watchful game. South Africa scored only 49 runs off the last 9.1 overs.”We put the lower order under huge pressure so they couldn’t play the game they would normally play,” de Villiers said. “But with the ball, they [Parnell and Philander] showed variation and skill, and then we let them down in the field.”Despite the stumble towards the end of the innings, South Africa can take heart from the pressure they created at the start and the return to form of Graeme Smith. With talk over the former captain facing the axe, Smith announced his intention to continue playing the 50-over format of the game brutally. “Hopefully he makes it happen now and maximises this,” de Villiers said. “I am expecting more runs from him in Jo’burg.”The final match of the series will be South Africa’s last home appearance of the summer before they head to New Zealand and England. de Villiers said they want end this series in as strong a position as possible. “We spoke about ruthlessness before this game but we weren’t that ruthless. We’ll have to do that better. We wanted a whitewash but we didn’t do that. We want to make it 4-1 now.”

'The best T20 match of my life' – Kohli

Virat Kohli played his finest Twenty20 innings but it was the little-known Arun Karthik who delivered the knockout blow

Siddarth Ravindran at the Chinnaswamy Stadium05-Oct-2011One of the allures of the Champions League Twenty20 is the chance it gives for the little guy on the big stage. None of the obscure domestic cricketers grabbed the opportunity as dramatically as 25-year-old Arun Karthik. He thwacked the final ball of the match over midwicket to conjure a preposterous win, which took Royal Challengers Bangalore through to the semi-finals, and set off on a memorable chest-thumping celebration. That will be the abiding image of Royal Challengers’ victory over South Australia, and perhaps of the league phase of the CLT20.There was another moment to define the game though. It was in the 13th over of the chase, in the middle of an audacious counterattack by Virat Kohli and Tillakaratne Dilshan. Kohli punched the air angrily after drilling a full toss to long-off for a single. After completing the run, he chastised himself and practised the off-drive again. Annoyance at missing out on a hit-me ball is one thing, but Kohli had missed out on the fourth ball of the over after striking the first three for six, six and four. It was that sort of a match, where no amount of runs seemed enough.Kohli had played a couple of blinders for the Royal Challengers in the CLT20 last year, and was second only to Chris Gayle in amassing runs in the IPL this season, but this 36-ball 70 ranks as his finest Twenty20 innings. There were several challenges to deal with in this high-pressure must-win game: no IPL team had ever beaten an Australian side in the CLT20, only a handful of times had a target in excess of 200 been successfully hunted down, and finally Gayle, the man whose form has closely mirrored that of the Royal Challengers this year, had been dismissed relatively cheaply. After Gayle and Dilshan had provided the initial thrust, Kohli came out and utterly dominated the high-octane century stand with Dilshan, which kept the chase on course. Of the first 74 runs of the partnership, Kohli’s contribution was 61, a big chunk of which came off his favourite Twenty20 stroke – the inside-out lofted drive in the arc stretching from long-off to deep extra cover. There were dabs past third man for four, hard-run twos after tucking the ball softly towards the deep, and no ugly across-the-line heaves were attempted.Virat Kohli made a vital 70 from 36 balls•Associated PressBy the time Kohli was dismissed, the pair had taken Royal Challengers to 165 for 2, with an eminently gettable 50 needed off the final five overs. “We were pumped up, to want to play like me and Dilshan did, you need some sort of adrenaline,” Kohli at the post-match press conference, with the sound of the Royal Challengers celebrating still being heard. “I was really excited since we were hitting the sixes at the right time and probably the best T20 match of my life.”Still to complete the job after Kohli’s dismissal, Royal Challengers needed some amazing hits and most of their batsmen delivered. Saurabh Tiwary bludgeoned Tait for a 99-metre six over long-on, Mayank Agarwal pummelled his first ball over the extra-cover boundary, Daniel Vettori flicked one way beyond midwicket, and S Aravind played an immensely courageous scoop in the final over for four. Despite all that, it came down to nine off three balls, at which stage Kohli says he lost hope.”I didn’t (think we could win),” he said. “I was sitting with the coach and we needed seven off two, and I told him, ‘coach if we get four off this ball, and two off the last ball, just run, I think we are going to make it,’ when we got a single, I just closed my eyes, and said coach whatever happens, happens.”Then came Karthik’s moment of magic, and the crowd went berserk. The Royal Challengers were also delirious, mobbing Karthik, who couldn’t stop bouncing up and down after the match-sealing six. Kohli, an animated presence in the dug-out since his dismissal, charged out and was the first to pluck some stumps as souvenirs. “None of us can still believe that, especially since it was a quarter-final for us, to be able to play like that was a team’s delight, a coach’s delight, a player’s delight, all in all a wonderful experience.”Royal Challengers may have emphatically proven they can win without Gayle turning in a headlining performance, but their shoddy fielding and toothless bowling remain a cause for worry. For their fans and the team, those concerns can wait for another day as they savoured a famous win.

Somerset extended their lead at the top of the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C table but they had to settle for a point after no result was possible in their clash with Lancashire Lightning at Old Trafford.Rain throughout the day in Manchester prevented play starting until 8.15pm, which meant the clash was reduced to 15 overs per side. But there was more wet weather to come after 7.4 overs of Lancashire’s innings with the hosts struggling at 39 for 3 on a turning track.Somerset, last year’s runners-up, may have moved one point clear of Essex after six matches but this result ended their 100 percent record in this year’s competition. Spinners Murali Kartik, Max Waller and Arul Suppiah bowled 5.4 of the 7.4 overs – with the former two taking the new ball.Indian Kartik, a former Lancashire overseas player, struck with the sixth ball of the match when he had Stephen Moore caught at point by Craig Meschede. Lightning stand-in captain Steven Croft, who had earlier won the toss, hit two boundaries off Waller’s first over but he and his partners failed to find the fence again until the seventh over when he pulled Meschede’s medium pace to the fence twice.During that time opener Karl Brown became the second wicket to go, trapped lbw by Alfonso Thomas for one to leave the score at 15 for 2 in the third over. Paul Horton struggled for any rhythm during his innings of 7 not out off 17 balls and he lost Croft lbw to the legspin of Waller the ball before the rain arrived as Jordan Clark made his way to the crease.Croft, whose side have only won two of their six matches, finished with 26 off 18 balls. Kartik claimed figures of 1 for 6 from two overs, and Thomas 1 for 1 from one over.

Allan Donald will be moving from Zimbabwe to New Zealand•Zimbabwe Cricket

Allan Donald, the former South Africa fast bowler, will join New Zealand as a bowling coach for the ODI series against Pakistan and World Cup that follows.Donald was formerly coach of Zimbabwe’s domestic team Mountaineers and was released from his contract, enabling him to take up the job with the New Zealand team under John Wright. Donald had also briefly served as England’s bowling coach in 2007.”I’m extremely grateful to Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and the Mountaineers for agreeing to release me and I’m equally excited about the possibility of joining New Zealand Cricket on a more permanent basis,” Donald told on Monday. “Even though I was only in Zimbabwe for three months I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and learned a lot about being head coach.”Zimbabwe Cricket is undoubtedly heading in the right direction and I was looking forward to being a part of their return to Test cricket. But the opportunity to return to international cricket was irresistible and to work with somebody of the stature of John Wright is something which doesn’t come along every day and I can’t wait to get started.”New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan was pleased to secure Donald’s appointment, having tried first in 2008 to get him involved. “Allan’s appointment is an exciting one. His extensive coaching and playing experience should make a really positive impact,” he said.”We talked to Allan back in 2008 when an assistant coaching role was available and although he seriously considered coming on board he decided to stay on with Warwickshire. It is great he is now willing to commit and I know he is really looking forward to the challenge of returning to international cricket.”New Zealand are trailing 0-1 in the ongoing Test series against Pakistan and will play six ODIs in the lead-up to the World Cup next month. Donald joins the squad in Wellington on Thursday, ahead of the opening ODI of the series.
