Rahul Dravid took them out of troubled waters, Thilak Naidu consolidated their position before Sunil Joshi’s breezy knock allowed Karnataka to seize the advantage by the end of the second day in Bangalore.Though Naidu played a fine innings and Joshi played an enterprising knock, it was Dravid who laid the platform with an assured 83. The pitch eased out during the afternoon as the sun came out but it was still doing something in the morning when Dravid took charge. Overnight on 26, he looked at ease during his stay today. He repeatedly took positive strides out to the seamers and started off with an on-driven boundary against Salim Veragi. Spin was introduced in the form of Rajesh Pawar and Dravid started using his feet. He went right back to play the shot of his innings – a gorgeous punchy on drive through wide mid-on – off Pawar before he chipped down the track to lift the offspinner Utkarsh Patel over long-on.A couple of trademark cover drives against the spinner saw him move along nicely before the first moment of self-doubt arrived on 75. Ajitesh Argal, the best Baroda bowler, got one to shape away late and Dravid was committed on the forward prod but the edge was spilled by Satyajit Parab at first slip. But it didn’t prove costly as Dravid fell to the same bowler in the next over. Connor Williams set a 7-2 off-side field and Dravid dragged an intended extra-cover drive off the very next ball to his stumps.Thilak Naidu, one of the most colourful personalities in the domestic cricket today, made sure Dravid’s effort wasn’t wasted. The ball was still turning, albeit a touch slow, and he displayed a tight technique: He stretched well forward to smother the spin and he showed excellent judgement of the amount of the turn and his off stump to let the ball through to the keeper on other occasions. He played quite a few delicious cover drives against the spinners. He cover drove Patel for couple of boundaries before repeating the dose against the left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar. The field thickened on the off side and he deployed the sweep shot to good effect. A slog sweep fetched him a six, two fine sweeps pinged the fine-leg boundary.A re-adjustment to the field saw the cover drives come back. So it went along rather nicely before tea intervened and Naidu slowed down appreciably upon resumption. And Pawar got rid of him on 90. Naidu shaped to late cut, the wicketkeeper collected and the appeal was upheld. However, by then, Naidu had shared a 103-run partnership in 122 minutes with Joshi to seize the advantage. It was Joshi who took the pressure off after the fall of Dravid with a refreshingly positive knock. He flicked Argal for his first boundary before turning his attention to the spinners. Despite the presence of a deep wide midwicket fielder, he slog swept Pawar for two huge sixes over that man before sweeping Patel over deep square leg and lofting one over long-on.But his best shot came against the mediumpacer Ketan Panchal: He simply knifed through the line of a length delivery to clear long-off. He fell against the run of the play to Argal as he shaped initially to leave the ball before trying to get his bat in line but it was too late; the ball had rushed through the bat and pad gap to clean up the off stump. B Akhil, playing his first game of the season, and Sunil Raju ensured there wouldn’t be further damage. Akhil used his height well to reach out to the spinners and played a few drives when the opportunity presented.By the end of the day, Baroda were staring at defeat. The first-day collapse and the resistance of the Karnataka batsmen have left them with too much to do. Perhaps, had Shatrunjay Gaekwad held C Raghu’s catch in the fourth over of the day when Karnataka were on 71 for 3, things could have been different. Raghu eventually departed 45 minutes later with the score on 99. The morning dampness had evaporated by then and Naidu joined hands with Dravid to ease Karnataka to a commanding position.

Ganguly retained for first two Tests

India have retained Sourav Ganguly in a 15-man squad for the first two Tests against Australia

India’s selectors have picked Sourav Ganguly in a 15-man squad for the first two Tests against Australia. He is expected to join India A in Chennai for a Test against New Zealand A beginning on October 3 because he isn’t part of the ongoing camp in Bangalore. There were also call-ups for Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath and Haryana legspinner Amit Mishra, who played three one-day internationals in 2003.The squad consists of seven batsmen, one wicketkeeper, four fast bowlers and three spinners. The six batting slots are filled by Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly and VVS Laxman, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni as wicketkeeper. The two wicketkeepers used in Sri Lanka after Dhoni opted out, Dinesh Karthik and Parthiv Patel, have been excluded.Despite the intense speculation on Ganguly’s future leading up to the selection meeting, the new selectors apparently felt that he had the three qualities essential for a series against Australia. “[He has] experience, character and resilience,” said a national selector. “Besides, whatever his scores may have been in Sri Lanka, we could not ignore the fact that he has scored in the last 10 Tests.”Ganguly had reportedly considered quitting cricket after being overlooked for the Irani Cup match between the Rest of India and Delhi but India’s new selection panel, headed by Kris Srikkanth, has valued his experience over youngsters like Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif.Ganguly has struggled against Australia, averaging just 31.73 in 20 Tests compared to an overall average of 41.74 in 109 Tests. Since his recall in December 2006 and till the end of the home series against South Africa earlier this year, Ganguly scored 1571 runs at 50.67, including a maiden double-century. However, he managed only 96 runs in six innings during India’s 2-1 series defeat in Sri Lanka this summer.Indian squadAnil Kumble (capt), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel, RP Singh, S Badrinath, Amit MishraAfter being called in as a substitute fielder during the home series against Pakistan late last year, Badrinath had a spell in the cold till he was named as Tendulkar’s replacement for the Sri Lanka ODIs, and played three games. Dhoni, his captain for the ODIs, publicly expressed his satisfaction at Badrinath’s attitude during the series. He managed only 92 runs in the recent A team series against Australia and New Zealand and had a poor Irani Cup but the selectors have clearly indicated that he is the future.”I am really happy to be selected to play against Australia,” Badrinath said. “I was expecting this call. I will take tomorrow’s match as serious practice. It will give me some experience against them.”Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma will lead the bowling attack along with Munaf Patel and RP Singh. Anil Kumble, India’s captain, Harbhajan Singh and Mishra, 25, make up the spin quotient. Mishra, who has 289 first-class wickets at 25.21, had a fine domestic season (38 wickets in the Ranji Trophy) and has also staked a claim through his good IPL performances (11 wickets at 12.55).Mishra, a neat and organised spinner, was included in India’s Test squad to face West Indies in 2002 but did not get a game then. He subsequently made his ODI debut against South Africa in Dhaka in 2003 but fell out of national reckoning since. He has now pipped left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who was in the Test side for Sri Lanka and played in the ODI series. Piyush Chawla, the Uttar Pradesh legspinner, was the other name doing the rounds but he too has been overlooked.Mishra said his stint with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL – during which he claimed a hat-trick against Deccan Chargers – transformed his career.”It all started from the IPL. It gave me the platform to interact with greats like Shane Warne,” Mishra said. “I specifically worked on my loop and top spin. I am very happy after hearing the news. I feel great as I’ve been expecting the call over the last year.”Before the selection meeting, the selectors were “briefed” by Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president. Manohar, apparently, delivered a “convincing and forceful talk” on the need to plan for the team’s future, given that the senior players are on the last leg of their careers. He also reminded the selectors of the board’s guidelines for the committee, including curbs on media assignments. The first Test starts in Bangalore on October 9. The second is in Mohali from October 17-21. The squad for the remaining fixtures, in Delhi and Nagpur, will be named after the second Test.

Orthodoxy is the best form of attack

The success of the bowlers in a low-scoring series has left the batsmen with plenty to do as the bandwagon moves back to Colombo for the last three matches

The success of the bowlers in a low-scoring series has left the batsmen with plenty to do as the bandwagon moves back to Colombo for the last three matches. The indifference of the batsmen in the first two matches in Dambulla has given both sides cause for concern, and both captains have banked on a more traditional ODI track to nudge ahead in the series. Regardless of the nature of the track, the two sides need to sort out their batting problems. On Wednesday, Sri Lanka were 44 for 6 by the 18th over of their innings and India were 75 for 5 by the end of the 20th over. The damage had been done by the bowlers and India were only saved by a smart 60-run partnership between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and debutant S Badrinath. The orthodox approach the two took, getting down and dirty to knuckle towards victory, could be the best way for the two teams’ batsmen to approach the first of three fixtures at the Premadasa Stadium, a ground built on swamp land, and with a spin-friendly reputation.Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan wicketkeeper, feels the batsmen have been indecisive so far, and felt that orthodoxy would pay out over panache. “We’ve seen two low-scoring games in Dambulla, where it was hard to know when the time was to play your shots,” he told Cricinfo, “because at the start it was hard to get into rhythm when the ball was doing a lot. There was not enough solidarity. That attitude is vital in any form of cricket: stick around, watch the ball, and hit it. In one-day cricket there are field restrictions so a batsman can try his luck with the new ball but good orthodox cricket and patient shots always wins in the end.”In eschewing the extravagant shots and nudging the ball around for singles and the odd harried double, Dhoni and Badrinath proved that Mendis could be thwarted. In contrast, India’s top order perished even before spin had arrived in the first match. Similarly, Sri Lanka’s batting order capsized in trying to dominate from the outset.”We were a bit disappointed the way we handled that situation,” said Mahela Jayawardene. “We knew it was going to be a tough period in that morning session and wanted to execute certain plans. We couldn’t, and that game is gone.”Bumping Yuvraj Singh, better against pace than spin, down the order may be a wise move. If the others before him can handle Mendis and Murali and set a platform Yuvraj can be devastating at the endFor starters, the teams would do well to identify what a match-winning total is. The average score at the Premadasa since 2000 has been 230. The difference, starting tomorrow, could well be who plays the patient innings. During his Asia Cup final hundred Sanath Jayasuriya batted time out while four early wickets fell, set himself up, and played a match-winning century. Gautam Gambhir played the prototype of the perfect one-day innings against Sri Lanka in Brisbane earlier this year, and remains the man India need to bat around.Given the threat posed by Muttiah Muralitharan and Mendis after the Powerplays, the role of a player like Gambhir is significant, given his success against them in the Tests. Dhoni, a noted floater, needs to come up the order and aim to bat for a long time. Bumping Yuvraj Singh, better against pace than spin, down the order may be a wise move. If the others before him can handle Mendis and Murali and set a platform Yuvraj can be devastating at the end.Sri Lanka’s preferred opening combination in the series, Jayasuriya and Sangakkara, has yet to fire and bar two innings from Jayawardene and Chamara Kapugedera in the opener, the middle order has been poor. Instead of playing their shots, like they did in Dambulla, the batsmen may find success working themselves in and accelerating later.India’s nervous victory in the second Dambulla fixture has revived a series which many reckoned Sri Lanka would sweep after Mendis and Murali walloped India in the Tests. Now, with the series level at 1-1, both teams have everything to play for at the Premadasa. A traditional one-day venue it is, and a traditional approach from the batsmen could prove crucial.

Rohit and Ojha included for Sri Lanka Tests

India have included uncapped players Rohit Sharma and Pragyan Ojha in the 16-member squad for the three-Test series in Sri Lanka. Yuvraj Singh has been left out, while Gautam Gambhir wins the opener’s slot ahead of Wasim Jaffer. Zaheer Khan also returns to the team after injury niggles ruled him out of international action so far this year. With Mahendra Singh Dhoni opting out, the selectors have named two wicketkeepers in Dinesh Karthik and Parthiv Patel. The selection committee also announced the 30 probables for the Champions Trophy in September.A source in the BCCI said the selectors decided to give Yuvraj”a break” with an eye on the amount of cricket coming up and considering the slim chances of him getting a slot in the final XI for the three Tests in Sri Lanka. “The selectors decided to give him a break, considering the amount of cricket he has played recently and the cricket that is coming up in which he will play a crucial role,” the source told Cricinfo. “Also, they felt it would have been difficult to accommodate him in the final XI for the Tests in a line-up that already has Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman and Ganguly. These were the two main factors that were considered in Yuvraj’s case.” Unlike Dhoni, Yuvraj did not ask for a break, but it was felt that he needed one, the source said.Yuvraj marked his comeback to the Test team with a 169 against Pakistan in Bangalore last year, but was dropped from the XI after scoring 19 runs in four innings during the Test series in Australia. Yuvraj is also susceptible against spin, another factor that could have gone against him, given the conditions in Sri Lanka.Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, Mohammad Kaif and Ramesh Powar are the other omissions from the Test squad that featured in the home series against South Africa. Harbhajan Singh returns to international cricket after completing his five-match ODI ban for slapping Sreesanth, who wasn’t in the reckoning as he’s still recovering from a side strain. The squad consists of seven batsmen, two wicketkeepers, four fast bowlers and three spinners.

Test squad for Sri Lanka
  • Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Parthiv Patel (wk), Anil Kumble (capt), Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha.

Part of the winning ICC World Twenty20 side in South Africa, Rohit impressed in the CB Series in Australia earlier this year and continued his form for the Deccan Chargers in the IPL. Ojha, the Hyderabad left-arm spinner, recently earned a call-up to the ODI side. “It’s a dream come true. Any cricketer would want and expect to play for the country,” Ojha told Cricinfo.”I didn’t particularly think about the Sri Lanka series but I knew if I keep bowling well I would get a chance. No wild celebrations now as I want to perform on the field. I will be concentrating on my flight and changes in pace and will generally try to bowl like I do in the Ranji Trophy.”Gambhir forces his way back into the Test team on the string of impressive performances in limited-overs cricket and domestic tournaments. He replaces Jaffer, who’s had a poor run in Tests since the Eden Gardens Test against Pakistan last year, in which he scored a double-century.Parthiv last played for India in October 2004; since then Karthik and Dhoni have won favour for a spot in the Indian team. Karthik last played the Bangalore Test against Pakistan, which Dhoni had to skip due to an ankle injury. Karthik had played as a specialist opener in Test series in Bangladesh and England last year, and in the home Tests against Pakistan.Karthik was surprised with his selection. “I didn’t know if Dhoni was playing the series or not. It feels great that they have given me a chance.” he told Cricinfo. “I don’t see this a stop-gap arrangement for Dhoni but will look at this as a great opportunity to perform and prove my credentials.

Champions Trophy probables
  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan, Praveen Kumar, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Parthiv Patel (wk), Manpreet Gony, S Badrinath, Mohammad Kaif, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha, Piyush Chawla, Manoj Tiwary, Abhishek Nayar, Pankaj Singh, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Kartik.

“Ajantha Mendis will be a tough bowler to pick but it’s really exciting challenge to play someone like him. I am confident that if I get a chance I will do my best to perform both in batting and wicketkeeping.”Parthiv was due to lead India A in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia. Suresh Raina replaces him, while S Badrinath will captain the team. Parthiv had an impressive 2006-07 first-class season, scoring 1103 runs in 13 games at 58.05 as he captained Gujarat to victory in the Ranji Trophy Plate League.”It’s a great opportunity,” Parthiv told Cricinfo. “I’ve been performing really well in the last three domestic seasons. At the back of my mind, there was the possibility of me being picked. I know what it takes to be a Test player.”

Spurs have already lodged Damsgaard offer

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, via Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur have already made their first offer to sign Sampdoria sensation Mikkel Damsgaard.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Damsgaard…

As per The Evening Standard, managing director Fabio Paratici now has his eyes firmly on strengthening the creative positions in Tottenham’s team after sealing Cristian Romero from Atalanta.

Damsgaard is one of the targets on Spurs’ agenda alongside former academy player Noni Madueke, according to that report, with La Repubblica (via Calciomercato) now bringing a further development.

The Latest: Spurs have already made Damsgaard offer…

As per the newspaper from Italy, Tottenham have actually already made their first offer to sign the 21-year-old rising star this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They claim the bid is ‘higher than €20 million (£17.04 million)’ but nowhere near Sampdoria’s €40m (£34.02m) asking price, which club president Massimo Ferrero is demanding for his services.

Spurs’ first offer looks unlikely to be accepted as a result but a ‘good starting point’ for negotiations could be a figure in and around the €30 million (£25.5m) mark.

The Verdict: Perfect for Spurs…

Signing Damsgaard, in our opinion, would be the cherry on top of an already impressive window so far for Tottenham.

Paratici has undergone an extensive Lilywhites rebuild with the departures of Toby Alderweireld, Joe Hart, Erik Lamela, Juan Foyth, Danny Rose and Paulo Gazzaniga – shifting deadwood and making space for marquee arrivals.

The Lilywhites have already secured most of their main targets but adding Damsgaard into the mix would really be a masterstroke by Tottenham’s new managing director.

He is arguably one of the most exciting youngsters in world football with there already being a ‘gigantic buzz’ around him in Denmark, according to his former youth coach Kasper Kurland (inews.co.uk).

The starlet’s sensational free-kick against England in their Euro 2020 semi-final at Wembley could only be a glimpse into his ability, especially considering he has drawn comparisons with former Spurs favourite Christian Eriksen.

Me senti bem. Preciso recuperar o ritmo.

O Galo tem um time muito qualificado. Qualquer um pode jogar. Tomara que eu possa aproveitar a chance no jogo e mostrar o meu melhor – finalizou.

United expecting Aaron Ramsdale offer

Sheffield United have been dealt a blow in their bid to keep Aaron Ramsdale at Bramall Lane this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, who revealed that Arsenal have made the goalkeeper their top priority in the summer transfer window, ahead of West Bromwich Albion shot-stopper Sam Johnstone.

Crook goes on to state that Mikel Arteta’s side have already seen two bids rejected for the 23-year-old, and are now lining up a third offer believed to be in the region of £30m.

Bad news for Blades

While £30m is undeniably a mouthwatering fee to receive for a Championship side, particularly following the effects of the global pandemic on the financial health of clubs all up and down the country, losing a player of Ramsalde’s ability is bad news for the Blades – regardless of the fee his potential sale would bring in.

Indeed, over his 38 Premier League appearances last season, the £10.8m-rated man kept five clean sheets, as well as making an average of 3.9 saves and 0.3 successful runs out per game, in addition to stopping a whopping 147 shots throughout the club’s campaign.

These metrics saw the man Jurgen Klopp dubbed an “incredible” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.87, ranking him as United’s third-best performer in the English top flight.

As such, Ramsalde’s ability is clear for all to see, meaning his loss would severely damage Slavisa Jokanovic’s chances of going on to secure an immediate return to the Premier League with the Blades next season – unless he can find an apt replacement for the £43k-per-week ‘keeper in what remains of the summer transfer window.

However, with Sheffield United now being a Championship side, the chances of the club attracting a player of a similar ability to Ramsdale are slim to none, with the shot-stopper’s likely departure leaving the 52-year-old manager with no other choice than to bring in a downgrade on the England Euro 2020 squad member this summer.
