Everton eye £20m Mina exit for Koulibaly

Farhad Moshiri must rue giving Marco Silva the green light to sign Yerry Mina in 2018, as Everton will reportedly look to sell the Colombian at a loss to fund Kalidou Koulibaly’s arrival.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Toffees will listen to offers for Mina at the end of the season but expect to take a hit on the fee paid to FC Barcelona.

Mina moved to Merseyside for £27m during Silva and Director of Football Marcel Brands’ first window in charge and has made 72 appearances for the club across all competitions.

The 26-year-old has been a regular for Carlo Ancelotti this season, starting 19 of 24 available Premier League games, yet Everton are keen to cash-in on Mina to raise funds for the arrival of SSC Napoli centre-back Koulibaly.

Everton have made Koulibaly their top defensive target for the summer market, but face a €50m (£42.5m) asking price and potential competition from Bayern Munich and Manchester City, per La Repubblica via Football-Italia.

Ancelotti has targeted defensive reinforcements as he does not believe his current options have the ability to play together and while he is said to admire Mina’s physicality, privately has concerns that the 26-cap international is too erratic and error-prone.

The Toffees would only be expected to fetch up to £20m through Mina’s sale, and would use the funds to sign an alternative high-calibre option should Koulibaly prove out of reach.

Gianluca Mancini had been linked with a potential move to Goodison Park earlier in the month, although AS Roma have since declared the Italian non-transferable and are due to hold discussions over a new contract with the 24-year-old’s agent.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-everton-news-gossip-and-views” title=”The latest Everton news and views!”]

Should Everton sell Mina?

With Ancelotti seemingly in the market for a new centre-half who can better complement his other current options of Michael Keane, Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate, selling Mina would make a great deal of sense for Everton given the Italian’s alleged concerns.

Ancelotti’s supposed issues with Mina being error-prone and erratic also do not sit well with the 6 ft 4 enforcer being Everton’s joint-highest earner, with the injury-prone Colombian and Bernard both on £120,000-per-week deals, per Spotrac figures.

Moshiri will no doubt rue the prospect of the Toffees parting with Mina for a significant loss, however, so will likely urge Brands to take his time in finding a suitor willing to pay as close to the £27m sent to Barcelona three-years ago.

But the Blues owner will be kicking himself most of all for sanctioning Silva’s swoop to make Mina one of his first arrivals at Goodison Park, having potentially seen £24.5m go to waste.

With Everton only expected to make £20m from Mina’s sale, £7m will have gone down the drain before accounting for the £17.5m that the defender will have earned by the final game of the Premier League season away to Manchester City in May.

It will have been 145 weeks since Mina’s arrival on Merseyside when the Blues travel to the Etihad Stadium to close out the campaign, seeing that he will have earned close to what Everton paid Barcelona for Lucas Digne (£18m).

But while Digne signed a new contract last month to stay with the Blues through to 2025, Mina – who Paul Robinson claims can produce “outstanding” performances – may soon be shown the door.

Harrison tipped to start Leeds’ next game

Former England striker Kevin Phillips believes Jack Harrison could start for Leeds United against Liverpool next week.

The Whites host the reigning Premier League champions next Monday night in what promises to be a thrilling game at Elland Road.

Two attack-minded teams will lock horns, in a clash which could bring back memories of the Whites’ famous Mark Viduka-inspired 4-3 win back in 2000. The reverse of that scoreline materialised when the sides met at Anfield on the opening day of this season.

Leeds are still buoyant after their 2-1 victory away to Manchester City last weekend, a result which showed they can take on the best in the Premier League, even with 10 men.

Harrison tipped to start against Liverpool

Phillips has told Football Insider that he would name the same team for the Liverpool game, but could see Marcelo Bielsa throwing in Harrison:

“It’s Bielsa isn’t it? He’s his own man and he’s quite a stubborn guy so it wouldn’t surprise me if Harrison came back in.

“I’d be disappointed if I was a player missing out after an away win at Man City, I’d like to think he’ll go with the same team again.

“Obviously he’ll have to bring someone in for Cooper but for me, pick the same team and send them in again. Then you’ve got no issues or anyone knocking on your door going ‘why have you dropped me?’.

“It’s Bielsa, we’ve seen him surprise us before but me personally, I’d go with the same team.”

Transfer Tavern take

It is never easy to second-guess Bielsa, but it would be a surprise if he opted to make any changes against the Reds, barring the enforced decision of replacing the suspended Liam Cooper. Leeds will have had a nine-day break by the time the match rolls around, so the team should be well-rested and raring to go again.

That said, with Harrison being their joint-second highest scorer in the league and available once more after being ineligible to face his parent club last Saturday, it’s understandable why Phillips believes he could be recalled when the Reds come to Elland Road in six days’ time.

Charlton suffer fresh injury setback

Charlton Athletic have suffered a fresh injury setback ahead of their return to League One action on Good Friday…

What’s the latest?

According to LondonNewsOnline, the Addicks will make the trip to Doncaster Rovers without the services of in-form striker Conor Washington.

The 28-year-old forward came off injured just five minutes into Nigel Adkins’s first game in charge, a 2-2 draw with AFC Wimbledon, before the international break.

He did not go away with Northern Ireland as a result, and remained at The Valley for treatment on the hamstring problem.

“Conor is not going to be available for selection,” revealed Adkins. “We’ll miss the Easter programme but he is responding as well as he can. It will be a big miss.”

Bad news

A big miss he will be, indeed.

Washington is currently the second top-scorer in the Addicks squad, having bagged 11 goals in 32 appearances in League One this campaign. Only makeshift centre-forward Chuks Aneke has scored more, as per WhoScored.

It was rather telling that Adkins started both Washington and Jayden Stockley over the leading talisman in his first starting XI, as both were deployed up top in a 4-4-2 formation.

And it’s easy to see why.

The 28-year-old offers more than just goals to this Charlton side. Before his departure, ex-Addicks boss Lee Bowyer heaped praise on his frontman, telling the club’s official website:

“Conor is so important. Jayden [Stockley] and Chuks Aneke’s mobility isn’t natural to them. Conor does the dirty work for them, running into channels in between the centre-halves. He works so hard for the team, I’m so pleased for him. He does a lot of unselfish work and got his reward tonight.”

Washington chips in with an average of 0.8 dribbles per game, a figure well above the aforementioned duo, via WhoScored, so Bowyer’s words are certainly true and could provide a clue into why Adkins preferred his inclusion last time out.

It’ll be a big blow to not have the £518k-rated ace available for selection against a fellow side competing for promotion.

Everton fans love new stadium news

Lots of Everton fans are loving an update involving their proposed move to a brand new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

As per a tweet from Sky News correspondent Tom Parmenter, the chief executive at Liverpool City Council has said that nothing should jeopardise or delay the Merseyside club’s proposed move from Goodison Park as of yet, as it still awaits its final sign off.

The government had previously asked if they could have more time to consider the Toffees’ stadium plan, but it looks as if everything is good to go for now, which should excite several members of the Blues faithful as they eye up a brand new, shiny home for themselves.

Nonetheless, there will surely be further updates as the process gets ever closer to completion.

Torres was poor for City in West Ham win

Whilst Manchester City were able to make it 20 wins in a row in all competitions with a 2-1 win against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, the performance was not at the level City have been producing in recent weeks.

Whilst Pep Guardiola made plenty of changes from the side that beat Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek, the side that started at the Etihad looked sluggish in the first-half in particular, with West Ham deservedly levelling through Michail Antonio.

City struggled to break down David Moyes’ side, with both goals coming from defenders in Ruben Dias and John Stones, with several attacking City players arguably underperforming.

Ferran Torres, in particular, was nowhere near his best on Saturday.

As per SofaScore, the Spanish winger would earn a 6.5 match rating for his display, which was the joint-lowest of any Man City player who started the game.

The former Valencia man was second-best against West Ham right-back Vladimir Coufal, with the Czech international earning an impressive 7.2 rating for his display, with Torres failing to track his runs forward on a number of occasions in the first half, one of which led to the equalising goal.

During his time on the pitch, Torres would complete just 23 passes, which was fewer than goalkeeper Ederson, and the joint-lowest with Sergio Aguero of any City player.

The 20-year-old was also successful in just 2/6 of his dribbles, which again emphasises that Coufal had the better of the £45 million-rated winger during his time on the pitch.

Torres also struggled to win many of his duels during the game, as he was successful in just 3/10 in total, resulting in a less than impressive 30% success rate. For comparison, City’s right-winger Riyad Mahrez would win 4/5 during his time on the pitch.

Therefore, despite the three points being the most important thing, Torres was rarely involved at the Etihad and it seems unlikely that he will feature again soon, especially when you consider the form of Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling in recent weeks.

And, in other news… End of an era: Txiki should sanction exit of £31.5m-rated City stalwart this summer

West Brom: Townsend has been an underrated steal

As former West Brom boss Darren Moore lands himself a new job in the Championship this week, many at the Midlands outfit still have a lot to thank him for.

After all, he was the man to bring the relatively unknown Conor Townsend to the Hawthorns, a left-back who has quickly emerged as one of Albion’s strongest players.

The 27-year-old joined from Scunthorpe United for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2018 and speaking about the move, Moore told the official website (via HullLive): “This is another good acquisition for us.”

It’s taken him a while to make such an impact, having been sat behind former England international Kieran Gibbs since then, though the tides are turning and he’s now the no.1 option in the role.

So much so that the club has extended his deal until June 2024, so clearly sporting director Luke Dowling and co see him as part of their long-term future, irrespective of the division they find themselves in next term.

And that’s a testament to Moore for taking the gamble on him despite never playing higher than League One in his career prior to the move.

Townsend played 27 times on the Baggies’ way to promotion last season, and while injuries have hampered his time in the Premier League, he’s still started 13 matches, via Transfermarkt.

In terms of average WhoScored rating for the season so far, he ranks sixth in this West Brom squad (6.71), which is pretty respectable considering it is the first time he’s played at this level in his career, and is higher than seasoned pros such as Robert Snodgrass (6.63), Gibbs (6.29), Branislav Ivanovic (6.24) and Jake Livermore (6.19).

The £15k-per-week gem has been pretty reliable defensively and has impressed with his solid work rate, averaging 1.6 tackles per 90 minutes at a success rate of just over 61.5%, which means more often than not, he’s stopping the opposition winger.

Whilst an average of 1.5 interceptions per 90 (fifth most) shows he can read the game well enough at this elite level to further thwart the opposition.

This is something backed up by his former Grimsby boss Paul Hurst, who told The Athletic: “He did really well for us in general. He was better at one-versus-one defending. Positionally he was better.”

“Intelligent,” “dynamic” and “popular” were just three other words used to describe him by Graham Alexander, too.

Perhaps it could even be argued that the 27-year-old gem has been an underrated member of this Albion squad with the likes of Matheus Pereira, Conor Gallagher and Kyle Bartley often taking the plaudits.

But you cannot forget about Townsend and it is thanks to the new Sheffield Wednesday boss that the Midlands outfit have him for the foreseeable future.

Sacked unfairly, but the left-back must be regarded as Moore’s finest parting gift at the Hawthorns.

AND in other news, West Brom’s “fearless” colossus surely running out of time to save Hawthorns career…

Boulaye Dia is proving West Ham right

Reports by Le 10 Sport earlier this week claimed Stade de Reims are almost guaranteed to sell Boulaye Dia in the summer, but the striker’s efforts in Ligue 1 are starting to prove that West Ham were right to snub a January transfer.

Reims are unlikely to retain Dia beyond the current campaign as they are loath to lose the 24-year-old for free next year, when his £3k-per-week contract is due to expire.

With Dia also attracting interest from clubs around Europe, the Stade Auguste-Delaune natives feel they could recover at least €15m (£13m) for the Senegal international, despite the Irons refusing to match that valuation during the recently closed winter market.

Weekly magazine France Football claimed in January that David Moyes’ Irons felt the fee needed to acquire Dia in the middle of the campaign was too high for a player of his status, with the three-cap forward only in his third season of top-flight football.

Dia is also enjoying his best campaign in front of the net with 12 goals in 23 Ligue 1 appearances, though is yet to add to his tally since striking a brace at home to AS Saint-Etienne in early January.

Nonetheless, it was already proposed by France Football that the Plastics Vallee product was also on the radars of SSC Napoli, AC Milan and Torino, while Le 10 Sport now add Ligue 1 giants Olympique de Marseille and Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt to his list of suitors.

The German outfit seem particularly keen to elbow their way to the front of the queue, as well, with Adi Hutter’s Deutsche Bank Park natives planning to submit an offer at the end of the term.

Milan and Napoli have previously spoken with the attacker’s representatives over a move to Italy, while Telefoot Chaine, via GFFN, suggested the Irons were willing to pay €10m (£8.5m) in January.

But no matter the interest emerging around Europe, Dia’s efforts in Ligue 1 right now are proving Moyes and West Ham were right to ere on the side of caution and not swoop for the French-born striker.

Dia is six Ligue 1 appearances without a goal since scoring against Saint-Etienne, and it has not been through a lack of attempts with the 24-year-old taking 10 shots over those outings, per WhoScored.

He was also dispossessed five times – more than in any other league game this term – and took six unsuccessful touches – the second-highest amount in single-game – against RC Lens last time out, only against FC Nantes in December has he taken more (8).

Additionally, Dia registered a lowly 5.93 match rating against Angers SCO at the start of the month, to contribute to an average 6.2 over his last three appearances, far below his seasonal score of 6.92 or the personal best 9.62 achieved against Montpellier HSC in October.

The 5 ft 10 striker may have hit a brace in defeat to second-tier Valenciennes FC in the Coupe de France to take his tally to 14 in all competitions this season, and he would have offered another body in West Ham’s attack after Sebastien Haller joined AFC Ajax.

But Dia’s Ligue 1 efforts are only proving Moyes made the right call in refusing to match Reim’s asking price, and it will surely take a sizable turnaround for the Irons to swoop this summer.

It appears that the east Londoners dodged a sizeable bullet this January, even in their need for a proper striker replacement.

Forget Sanson: Smith should play Villa’s Raikhy

With Aston Villa still having yet to play a single game since their kids did them proud in the FA Cup against Liverpool, it’s no doubt given Dean Smith plenty to think about heading into the second-half of this season.

The Villa boss saw his club’s academy talents really take the game to the reigning Premier League champions, and whilst they eventually succumbed to a 4-1 defeat, it was no reflection of their efforts.

And in central midfield, debutant Arjan Raikhy really held his own as he came up against the likes of established Champions League winners like Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum.

The 18-year-old won four out of his seven ground duels, with only centre-back and captain for the night Dominic Revan winning more with five. Raikhy showed he could put his foot in and not be intimidated by the array of glittering stars on the opposite side to him, making two tackles as well – again, only Revan and fellow centre-back partner Mungo Bridge had more with three.

And writing his post-match ratings for The Birmingham Mail, Ashley Preece said: “I thought Raikhy was excellent. Pinched possession off Liverpool on numerous occasions to start attacks and worked tirelessly for the team. A proper No8 this kid is who’s still playing for Villa’s under-18s. A proud night for him and his family, that’s for sure. The teenager’s got a great future in the game.”

Co-founder of fan group, Punjabi Villans, Ricky Cheema raved: “Listen, Raikhy won so many supporters being on that pitch. They all played out of their skins, matched Liverpool to the 60th minute. I’d say when Raikhy came off the game changed but that’s another question!

“Honestly, it was incredible. It was ground-breaking, that’s what it was. Ground-breaking to see a lad play at the top level. So may it continue. This is the start and he played in our beloved claret and blue. It’s just poetry.”

With reports in recent days and weeks claiming that Villa will allow Conor Hourihane to depart the club on loan in this January transfer window, and Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson could join, it’s looking like all change in the engine room.

What’s undoubted is that there’s nothing more satisfying for a football fan than seeing ‘one of your own’ make their mark on the first-team, and with Smith looking to revamp his midfield area with Hourihane’s departure and Sanson’s arrival, there’s a real opportunity for Raikhy to be brought into the fold more often too.

As a new signing Sanson would understandably bring some hype with him, but Villa should keep more than a close eye on Raikhy too.

Meanwhile, Villa could have their next Tyrone Mings in this academy starlet…

Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must unleash Paul Pogba vs City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must unleash Paul Pogba against Manchester City in a pivotal clash in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Pep Guardiola’s side will go above the Red Devils if they win at Old Trafford, which is precisely why Solskjaer must put his faith in the Frenchman, irrespective of Mino Raiola’s latest outburst.

As soon as he came off the bench against RB Leipzig, the stage was set for Pogba to make an impact.

Pogba played a big part as he stepped onto the pitch as a second-half substitute for the eighth time this season, this time replacing Nemanja Matic in the midfield in the Champions League clash against the Bundesliga challengers.

He made an impact almost immediately as United tried to fight back from 3-nil down, with his header cannoning off Harry Maguire into the back of the net to put his side within touching distance of the knockout stages.

His efforts were ultimately in vain, as United were unceremoniously dumped out of the Champions League, thanks to goals from on-loan Manchester City full-back Angelino, Amadou Haidara and Justin Kluivert.

With Raiola’s comments triggering an outcry on social media, there are of course concerns about his future at the club, but Solskjaer has moved to dissuade those fears.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, he said: “You have to ask Paul if he is happy or not. I’m not going to speak for him. Paul is focused on doing his best for the team and when he’s here he’s working hard in training just needs to focus on his performances.”

Defeat is not an option for Solskjaer, who also finds himself facing questions about his own future at the club.

Whilst his strained relationship with Pogba and his representatives is well-documented, the club legend cannot allow personal grievances to cloud his judgement.

Beating their arch-rivals would be a big step in the right direction and may go some way towards getting the Red Devils back on track.

Despite his off-pitch issues at Old Trafford, it’s fair to say that Pogba has been one of the club’s best players in recent weeks, with one goal in his past two games in all competitions.

His former boss Jose Mourinho once heaped praise on his “monster” heroics after the 2-1 win over Leicester City in 2018 before things took a turn for the worse.

Valued at £72m via Transfermarkt, the French World Cup winner has scored 34 goals and supplied 35 assists in all competitions, including two goals and an assist against the Citizens. Therefore, he surely deserves the chance to play in what could turn out to be a season-defining game for both manager and player in the Premier League.

AND in other news, Ed Woodward must secure Juventus striker Paulo Dybala as an Anthony Martial alternative…
