Brasil de Pelotas: Rafael Martins; Lázaro, Leandro Martins e Hevérton; Bruno Martins, Maicon Silva, Leandro Leite, Revson, Bruno Santos e Gegê; Dellatorre.

Ponte Preta: Ivan; Apodi, Wellington Carvalho, Rayan e Enernandes; Luis Oyama, Dawhan, João Paulo, Camilo e Bruno Rodrigues; Zé Roberto.

Raine seals tie with last-ball wicket

ScorecardBen Raine conceded just five, and claimed a last-ball wicket, in the final over to earn a share of the points•Getty Images

Leicestershire seamer Ben Raine took a wicket with the final ball of the game to secure a tie in a game when it looked as though a superbly paced innings in difficult conditions by Jack Leaning had seen Yorkshire to victory. With Leaning watching from the non-striker’s end after scoring 48 from 30 balls, Raine pinned Adil Rashid leg before with a well-pitched up delivery to delight the Grace Road crowd.”It feels like a win, to be honest, because we felt we were 10 to 20 runs short of a competitive total,” said Raine. “But we fought to save every run and took some brilliant catches, and it just goes to show you should never, ever give up.”Badly needing two points to improve their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals, the Vikings named a side that included England players Jonny Bairstow and Rashid, as well as fit-again Australian opener Aaron Finch, resuming his place at the top of the order after recovering from a bruised lung suffered in a 2nd XI Championship match earlier in the week.

Insights

Ben Raine said this felt like a win for Leicestershire and given their position in the match and the table it should. One point for them near the top of the table in a match they seemed set to lose is a bonus. For Yorkshire, who desperately needed a win, this tie could well have killed off any lingering hopes they had of a top four finish. It’s a shame really because Yorkshire have played two strong matches in their last three and are perhaps just beginning to find form.

Leicestershire welcomed back New Zealand international batsman Grant Elliott, as well as destructive Ireland international hitter Kevin O’Brien, a key member of their T20 line-up this season.Andrew Gale chose to bowl first on a slow, low track, and his seamers kept Leicestershire under pressure from the start. Foxes’ skipper Mark Cosgrove holed out to Glenn Maxwell in Matthew Fisher’s first over. Maxwell also took a good low catch running in from deep backward square to see the end of Kevin O’Brien off the bowling of Will Rhodes, and the Vikings continued to take vital wickets, with only Andrea Agathangelou giving the innings any real impetus before being run out for 40.The Foxes bowlers struck back quickly when Clint McKay had Finch leg before for just 2, but Bairstow, in ever increasing gloom, timed the ball superbly, hitting Raine for a six and four off consecutive balls before being bowled by Raine.Maxwell was also threatening to take the game away from Leicestershire when he was brilliantly caught at midwicket by Jigar Naik off the bowling of Ollie Freckingham, and the Foxes continued to fight to save every run.Leaning, though, played with real maturity in placing his shots and running hard, and received good support from Rhodes. Between them they looked to have done enough, but Rhodes was well caught low down by Naik, Richard Pyrah was caught at long-on, and Raine’s final over was good enough to secure the tie.

Much more than cricket

Touring India, assuredly, is much more than Phil Tufnell’s poverty and elephants. Newcomers must adjust not only to a country of vast contrasts and stunning diversity but also to pitches and match atmospheres unlike any other in the world. In the third of the My India Tour series, Glenn Turner, the New Zealand opener, talks about his special memories from the 1969-70 tour of India. It’s a pity that we have to talk about the cricket – on my tour to India many other interesting things happened that would play a big part in my future life. When I first toured India in 1969-70, I was an impressionable youngster. My batting position was shuffled time and again: first I was asked to bat up the order to see the shine off the new ball before the spinners arrived – and that usually took four overs. Then, in the series-decider at Hyderabad, the team management sent me as low as No. 10, which I thought was ridiculous. We were charging to victory in that match when rains arrived on the final day. As soon as the weather cleared, the players joined the ground staff in trying to dry the field: women were lifting water in buckets, men were trying to use clothes to soak up the wicket. Graham Dowling wanted us to lend a helping hand to expedite things, but I was frustrated and refused to help as the damage was done. Being young I was just angry at the situation.I leant quite a bit from that tour, though. New Zealand were treated as a secondary team in those days, unlike the English and the Australians who were given first-class status. We stayed at the grounds, not in luxury hotels, and the timing of the series – in the middle of September, when most of the country was in the throes of the monsoons – illustrates the point that a tour by New Zealand’s cricketers wasn’t a high-priority event. By playing that early in the season when the rains were still around, there was no time for the soil to bind well, which meant that the pitches would not be firm enough. However, we were happy with our performances on that twin tour to the subcontinent: after beating Pakistan 1-0 we almost beat India 2-1.Personally, that tour had plenty of significance for me as I met Sukhinder Kaur, my would-be wife, at a social function one evening during the Bombay Test. She was studying at the University, and it was pretty difficult for two young people – especially a female – to socialise during those days.Actually we were supposed to move to Ahmedabad, the venue for the first Test, but due to riots there the match was shifted to Bombay, which meant that we ended up spending 21 days in Bombay. That gave me ample time to explore the locales and the surroundings. We lost that Bombay Test – the Indian spinners capitalised on the innocence of our batsmen against slow bowling. During those amateur days there was no one to coach the players, so it was left to the player himself to sort things out. I was lucky in the sense that I was already playing for Worcestershire, which gave me some exposure to different types of pitches. Also our allowance in those days was a pittance- it wasn’t even sufficient to buy a bottle of beer. We couldn’t buy beer in Bombay anyway as it was a dry region. And in those days beer in India was far less palatable than it is today. The tour also gave me the opportunity to spot two youngsters who would excel in future: Sunil Gavaskar, who played for the Universities, and Vishy[Gundappa Vishwanath], who represented the Board President’s XI.Glenn Turner was speaking to Nagraj Gollapudi.Other

Younis stays modest as records tumble

There may be debates over whether he is Pakistan’s greatest Test batsman, but Younis Khan wants to be remembered as a team man whose performances made his country proud

Around 11,000 spectators created a festive atmosphere as Younis Khan made his fifth Test double century to leave Australia reeling in Abu Dhabi. It was his third hundred on the trot, and came against the backdrop of his exclusion from the one-day squad last month. The decision to axe him had prompted Younis to stridently question the selectors. He was retained in the Test squad though and while he has broken a slew of batting records, he insisted this wasn’t about showing up the selectors. “I am not here to prove anything to anyone,” he said after another productive day in Abu Dhabi. “I just wanted to show my character and wanted to win the games for my country after Pakistan lost four matches to Australia. So the intentions were never to prove a point but to help Pakistan.”Younis, though, said that the week after being dropped was an important period for him. “I still remember that one week that I spent with my family. I am not able to forget that moment. My family and friends were tense. The media was tense, the entire Pakistan was tense for me, wondering he could retire now, who knows what he could do now after having spoken out. The media has supported me a lot. Each and every moment from that week is with me and [I am] thinking positively from that.”He was also pleased with his preparation for the series. “It was my good luck that I landed here in UAE a week earlier and worked a lot on my batting with the help of the batting coach. The Australians would also practice nearby and whenever I got the opportunity, I would observe their body language and try to learn about them. So that week really made a difference.”During this series, Younis became Pakistan’s highest Test century maker, and reached 8000 Test runs, prompting debates over whether he is Pakistan’s greatest Test batsman. “I don’t think I can become a great… like Javed, Inzamam, Yousuf, Saeed Anwar, Zaheer Abbas, Hanif Mohammad … I can’t compare myself with them,” he said. “The era I am playing in, many things are easy for me compared to the time they have played their cricket. It was so difficult for them. I want to be remembered as a team man who served the team and as someone whose performances made his country proud.”He said he drew energy from the large holiday crowd in Abu Dhabi to complete his double century just before tea. “When I was around 160 or 170, my body’s response started to go down, but when I saw so many fans were coming in, I thought that if I push myself a little more, then I could get to 200…”When I saw so many people coming in for a Test, I felt very happy, I took motivation from the crowd, I wanted to hang in there and reach 200, so that all the people who have come to see me, I shouldn’t disappoint them.”The situation looks hopeless for Australia, but Younis, while hoping to win the Test, expected some tough days ahead. “Obviously when you score runs and contribute a lot in the game you want the team to win comprehensively so I hope we manage to pull off a whitewash.”But it isn’t going to be easy for us, we still have to put in the hard work. Though we have good spinners, Australia have been in this situation several times… they have Warner, Clarke, Smith and Haddin who had played a big role for them to win the Ashes. So it won’t be easy. We aren’t thinking that the contest will be over tomorrow or day after and I think the Australian team is capable of making a comeback.”

O próximo jogo do Corinthians será justamente contra o Taubaté.

Lancs best could be saved for one-dayers

Last year

1st, CC Div 2; QF, FLt20; 3rd, YB40 Group B.

2013 in a nutshell

Lancashire did what they had to in 2013. To follow a Championship win in 2011, however unexpected, by relegation the following year was quite a jolt. The only acceptable response was immediate promotion back to Division One and they achieved it emphatically, getting stronger as the season progressed and finishing 36 points ahead of their closest challenger, Northants. If Darren Stevens had not struck a sumptuous double hundred against them at Canterbury as the season drew to a close, they would have completed their Division Two campaign unbeaten. The Championship dominated Lancashire’s thoughts in 2013, how could it not, but they also performed ably in the limited-overs game. After a poor start in YB40, they won six on the trot and had visions of a place in the semifinals until Ravi Bopara’s hundred for Essex in the final group game put paid to that. Yet another sluggish start in T20 almost cost them, but they finished second in North Division before going out in the quarter-finals, falling just one run short of Hampshire’s imposing 202.

2014 prospects

Lancashire pulled off the most glamorous signing of the close season when Jos Buttler joined them from Somerset, in search of regular wicketkeeping opportunities. They will be desperate that England allow him to develop his batting and keeping talents in the Championship and do not turn to him prematurely as a Test wicketkeeper. They need Buttler’s runs, especially as Simon Katich, the driving force behind their promotion, has retired.Bowling wise, Lancashire also need to look beyond Glen Chapple. Kyle Hogg made his debut 13 years ago and, at 30, still carries promise of a big season. The left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan needs to use his disturbing England debut as a catalyst for improvement. But most hopes surround the burly pace bowler Kyle Jarvis, who walked out on Zimbabwe in his mid-20s last summer and who aims to make his home in Manchester as a non-overseas player. Old Trafford’s renaissance has roused expectations again in the north-west, although a big signing to help fill the stadium for NatWest Blast is still awaited.

Key player

Paul Horton’s elevation to the vice captaincy has positioned him as a potential successor when Chapple finally retires. He is highly respected at Lancashire, but while his leadership qualities will come in handy, his top-order runs will be more in demand this summer, in the Championship especially.

Bright young thing

Luis Reece was an immediate success at the top of the order on his debut season in 2013. He made 722 runs at an average of 55.53 in his ten matches and even struck seven of his eight half-centuries in consecutive innings. Not only did it win him an award as Lancashire’s Young Player of the Year, it meant the county could allow Stephen Moore to join Derbyshire with few qualms. But only one fact of his game was on show in 2013: he is also a promising left-arm medium-pacer, but a knee injury restricted him to only ten overs as Lancashire won the Second Division title. How he fares at a higher level will be intriguing.

Captain/coach

Glen Chapple starts his sixth season as Lancashire captain, amid the usual concerns about whether it could be his last. Peter Moores has been presented in some quarters as a serious contender for a second stint as England coach and, although the odds seem against it, should that happen it would be a considerable blow.

ESPNcricinfo verdict

Lancashire’s over-reliance on Chapple’s bowling and the loss of Katich, the mainstay of their batting, suggests survival in Division One will not be secured easily. They should manage it, but their best displays could be reserved for limited-overs cricket.
