Marcelo antecipa postura contra o Juventude: 'Atacar e fazer pressão'

– A gente vai atacar eles.

'West Indies showed character' – Pollard

West Indies’ stand-in captain Kieron Pollard praised his side for showing character in a tense one-wicket win over India at Sabina Park, despite the main batsmen failing to close out the game

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jul-2013West Indies’ stand-in captain Kieron Pollard praised his side for showing character in a tense one-wicket win over India at Sabina Park, despite the main batsmen failing to close out the game. Chasing 230, West Indies lost their ninth wicket with ten needed, but Nos 9 and 11, Kemar Roach and Tino Best respectively, held their nerve to seal their second consecutive win in the tournament.”At the end, we got over the line and that’s what matters,” said Pollard, who stood-in for the injured Dwayne Bravo. “In the recent past, West Indies teams would have capitulated completely, so it shows we have a bit of fight and character in this side.”We are West Indian cricketers. We attack. If we get into our shell, we get out. That’s how we play cricket and it has worked for us. At the end of the day you have to back yourself. We have to be happy for victories. We cannot say we are not feeling so good because No. 10 (sic.9) and 11 got us over the line. They are batsmen in the team as well.”A modest target of 230 was made to look complicated by West Indies, who lost wickets due to extravagant strokes, despite being well ahead of the required rate. Johnson Charles, who set the platform with 97, was one of those who perished trying to clear the infield. In the end, it was a level-headed partnership of 10 runs between Roach and Best that ended India’s five-match unbeaten streak in ODIs.However, Pollard wanted his team to assess the reasons for such a tense finish. “It’s just a matter of us doing the things that we haven’t done so well, especially in the middle overs.” he said. “As middle-order batsmen, we just have to take it upon ourselves and finish it for the team rather than letting No.10 and 11 (win the match).”Charles anchored the innings and added 116 with Darren Bravo to give West Indies control after losing three early wickets. After a labored 29 off 58 balls in the first match against Sri Lanka, Charles was pleased to get his rhythm back, hitting eight fours and four sixes.”I felt nice and relaxed at the crease. I was told to go out and play my natural game and that is what I did.” Charles said. “In the last game I had no rhythm but this game I came out with a bit more intent and I knew exactly where I wanted to score. I played to my strengths and played shots according to the fields India set”.On a damp wicket, India lost Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli inside the first ten overs, before Rohit Sharma’s eighth half-century against West Indies anchored the innings. A wayward Best returned at the death to claim the important wicket of India captain MS Dhoni first and Ravindra Jadeja in his next over.”We bowled well against the Indians and reduced them to a score we knew we could chase down,” Charles said. “The pitch got a bit flatter and was more of a batting pitch. I would have liked to have reached three figures and carry my team to victory but I’m happy we made it two wins in a row.”Pollard said he felt little pressure on his captaincy debut. “At the start of the game, there wasn’t any pressure. It came later on when we were trying to win the game.” he said. “We have experienced guys in the side, who have captained West Indies before, who have played all over the world and their knowledge was always going to help me go about the task of trying to lead West Indies.”

Pleased with team effort – Aguilleira

West Indies’ captain Merissa Aguilleira was pleased with the all-round effort of her team, and especially the batting, after they routed Sri Lanka by 209 runs in their second match of the Women’s World Cup

Vishal Dikshit in Mumbai03-Feb-2013West Indies’ captain Merissa Aguilleira was pleased with the all-round effort of her team, and especially the batting, after they routed Sri Lanka by 209 runs in their second match of the Women’s World Cup at the MIG Ground in Mumbai. They were bowled out for 179 in their previous match at the Brabourne Stadium, and three days later, the team put up a total of 368 here.”I must say this is a great example of a team effort,” Aguilleira said. “The batsmen did extremely well leading us upfront. We had a lot of people getting into the act with the bat. After that we followed up with the ball also. I think it was an all-round performance.”The major contribution was Stafanie Taylor’s knock of 171 and she almost carried her bat through the innings. Aguilleira said the team is always confident of putting up a big score when Taylor is in the middle.”We cherish Stafanie because she is such a phenomenal player and whenever she bats we believe that we will be able to get runs. She is very dedicated and we look forward to seeing more such innings from her in the future.”Taylor, who crossed her previous best score of 147, said she wanted to score as many runs as possible and that the thought of scoring 200 had crossed her mind. “My aim was just to go out there and do my best and build an innings with the others. The coach wanted me to score 200 today but unfortunately I was tired. I was trying but I think fatigue got the best of me.”Shashikala Siriwardene, the Sri Lanka Women’s captain, was particularly unhappy with the team’s fielding, as they dropped catches, missed run-outs and gave away many runs in overthrows. “Our fielding let us down very badly. I am very disappointed with it,” she said. “Eighty percent of the singles that they took shouldn’t have been conceded.”Siriwardene had put West Indies in to bat in slightly hazy conditions. But the West Indies batsmen were hardly troubled by the bowlers, who did not get much assistance from the pitch. “At one point I felt that we should have batted first,” she said. “We thought that there was something in the pitch for the bowlers, like the England match. But sometimes we make wrong decisions and we look to improvise.”West Indies struck a total of 34 fours and seven sixes, a majority of them hit by Taylor and Deandra Dottin. Apart from the toss and the fielding, Siriwardene said, one of the main differences in the two teams was the way the West Indies batsmen hit the ball hard. “We all know West Indies players use their power a lot. They can clear the fence at any time. Hopefully we won’t have to face the same problem against India in our next match.”All four teams in Group A have now played two matches, and won one and lost one each, which means net run-rate will come into play. England will now take on West Indies and India will play Sri Lanka on February 5, which will decide which teams proceed to the Super Sixes.

Denly the difference for Middlesex

Scorecard

If Middlesex and Worcestershire find themselves shoulder to shoulder near the bottom of the table in a few months’ time, battling each other to avoid relegation, then Joe Denly’s unbeaten hundred – his first for his new county – could turn out to be the cigarette paper inserted between the two sides. Denly batted with composure and application to add exactly 100 to his overnight score as Middlesex amassed their highest total of the season so far and denied Worcestershire a third bowling bonus point while they were at it.Middlesex claimed two wickets in the gloaming after Chris Rogers’ declaration shortly into the evening session but it was the performance of Denly, recruited from Kent over the winter, that stood out. With a draw the likeliest outcome, his performance, as a barometer of how well Middlesex may fare in Division One, was as valuable as the three batting points it helped to secure.Denly was once groomed as an England opener but lost his way after making a handful of one-day appearances in 2009. Seeking a fresh start, he swapped the tranquillity of Canterbury for the mildly grittier urban milieu of St Johns Wood and this innings suggested he may come again at international level, with England not exactly overrun with options as the top of the order. Having the captain, Andrew Strauss, as a team-mate won’t do his chances any harm, either.”It was nice to spend some time out in the middle and get that first hundred under the belt, my first hundred at Lord’s as well, so I’m delighted,” Denly said. “It’s been a while [since being involved with England]. If I’m scoring runs consistently then hopefully they might take a bit of notice but it’s only one knock so far, I’ve just got to focus on doing it week in week out and scoring big hundreds.”As it is, Middlesex are comfortably ensconced in the middle of the standings, while Worcestershire bob alongside Durham and Lancashire, the champions, near the bottom. The latter two were being talked of in title-challenging terms at the start of the season and both will expect their fortunes to improve but Worcestershire, having lost their opening six games last year, are familiar with the art of escapology. That Middlesex didn’t assert even greater supremacy in this match was largely down to Alan Richardson, once of NW8 himself, who claimed his third five-wicket haul of the season to take his overall tally to 24. The game may not have been the biggest show in town, with the FA Cup final taking place at Wembley just a few miles across north London, but then Richardson has never needed the incentive of the spotlight in order to perform. He was also unsentimental about his wicket-taking return.”I’ve got quite a few old clubs,” he said, with wry a smile. “It’s a fantastic place to come back to, the home of cricket, I had five great years here – whether everyone else thought they were great I don’t know but I certainly enjoyed them. To get five wickets is always nice, whatever ground it is.”I think the wicket has got a little bit in it, if anything we bowled pretty poorly yesterday. We’ve given ourselves a bit of a mountain to climb, I don’t think it’s a 327 for seven wicket. So we’ve put ourselves under a bit of pressure.”Despite more capricious weather in the morning, Denly remained unflappable at the crease. He got forward well and was particularly strong driving down the ground though, like all the batsmen, he had one or two uncomfortable moments against Richardson. After a generally sedate knock, punctuated by occasional boundaries, he moved from 86 to 101 from six balls, timing Richard Jones off his pads before dispatching another on drive down the ground to bring the members to their feet. That milestone seemed a long way off after Richardson had taken two in two balls to leave Middlesex on 172 for 5 but Denly combined with first John Simpson and then Gareth Berg to regain the initiative. Berg scratched around like a cooped up tom cat at the start of his innings, was dropped in the gully and rarely looked secure but grubbed his way to 36 out of a partnership of 88 with Denly, as Middlesex took the opportunity either side of a prolonged break for rain to restore some faith in their batting order.Denly pulled Richardson into the stands to bring up the 300 and the declaration came shortly after, as Middlesex seemingly dithered over whether to pursue a fourth batting point or not. Strauss then dropped Michael Klinger on nought, repaying the favour from yesterday. But as the clouds drew in, Worcestershire’s Australian opener was dismissed and Strauss’ could walk off in a sunnier frame of mind.

Inaugural BPL trophy up for grabs

Big PictureWith so much of the spotlight on controversies, a proper cricketing final would be a solace for the inaugural edition of the Bangladesh Premier League. Thankfully, two very entertaining Twenty20 teams, Barisal Burners and Dhaka Gladiators, will go head-on in the final in front of what is expected to be a sellout crowd.Barisal have gone through a lot to finally arrive in the final, an ascent that some predicted with Chris Gayle in the line-up initially. But even though they have missed Gayle and his power-hitting since the end of the tournament’s first week, they have progressed to the title clash. One of their main strengths is the captaincy of Brad Hodge, who has stood out as a leader who can influence the proceedings with his clever tactics.Dhaka, on the other hand, rely on all-out aggression. Imran Nazir, Azhar Mahmood, Mohammad Ashraful, Shahid Afridi, and Saeed Ajmal are all attacking players who can single-handedly change the course of the final. It promises to be a game that can go either way, even if a team does score really big in the first innings. If they don’t, expect a scrappy chase. In the spotlightBarisal’s Ahmed Shehzad is the highest scorer in the competition after his murderous 113 off 49 deliveries in the semifinal against Duronto Rajshahi. His previous six innings in the tournament include a hundred, two half-centuries and two forties.Dhaka’s left-arm spinner Elias Sunny currently shares top spot on the wicket-takers’ list with Mohammad Sami. He played an important role in the semi-final with a double-strike in his first over – the dimissal of both Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Smith put Khulna Royal Bengals’ chase under tremendous pressure.Form guide (most recent first)
