Amla seeks to dispel the doubts

Of all the players to have contributed to South Africa’s historic series win in England, Hashim Amla is the one man who will have caused the most surprise among his opponents, and delight among his peers. With his unmistakeable beard, and a manner that can come across as meek before you realise he’s simply being polite, he has the look and feel of a soft touch – hardly the sort of character you want batting at the pivotal No. 3 position in such a high-profile tussle for supremacy. But Amla has been eroding that perception all throughout this trip, and the quality of his final-day defiance at Lord’s has given way to the majesty of his straight driving today. His unbeaten 71 from 86 balls was an innings of such quality and, above all, speed, that South Africa’s hopes of registering their third consecutive victory of the series are beginning to break the surface of the puddles that were forming on the covers by the close of the third day’s play.”We’d be gutted to lose here, but we do have an opportunity to win,” said South Africa’s coach, Mickey Arthur. “England looked vibrant, and I do think our guys weren’t mentally in the same space as they were at the start of the series, and that’s understandable, but it’s even stevens now. With another one or two partnerships, we can get up to or over 200-220 and put a lot of pressure on the England top five. We feel we can defend that.”Amla is an unlikely ego-pricker, but on today’s brief evidence, he is South Africa’s best hope if they are to get close to a total from which they can win the match. It is not merely that he will have been the least affected by the celebrations that followed the Edgbaston triumph (as a devout Muslim, he opted out of the hedonism that gripped of some of his team-mates). Far more important is the fact that he still has one last point to prove to an England team that, even now, are probably not quite convinced that he is the real deal.Amla’s first appearance against England, at home in 2004-05, set the agenda for the barrage to which he has been subjected on this tour. After a debut against India at Kolkata in November 2004, he was selected for his home debut at Durban in place of the black wicketkeeper, Thami Tsolekile, and unwittingly underpinned the feeling that he did not deserve a place on merit when he was bombed out for 1 and 0 by Steve Harmison and Simon Jones. Two more short-lived scores of 25 and 10 in the subsequent Test at Cape Town persuaded the selectors to shelve the experiment, and Mark Boucher – a frustrated onlooker for the early part of the series – was belatedly recalled for the fourth Test at Johannesburg and AB de Villiers was allowed to give up the gloves and get back to being a batsman. The fact that Amla had been chosen after a prolific season as the captain of the Dolphins in Natal was neither here nor there. The statistics of the series said he had not been worth his place, and that seemed to be the end of the argument.England’s thinktank remembered that fact all too clearly ahead of this series, and right from the start of the Lord’s Test their approach to Amla has mirrored the bombardment of three years ago, with short balls in abundance. And yet, at the close of the third day, England’s coach, Peter Moores, was forced to admit that the player they’ve been targeting was not the same man they remembered from the video footage.”He’s improved over the last 12 months before he came here, and what we’d seen of him from when we did our homework, he’s become a much tighter player than last time he played against England,” said Moores. “He got a beautiful ball from Steve Harmison to get rid of him in the first innings, but what he’s done so well, is he’s latched onto anything slightly loose and put it away for four. He hits down the ground now as well as square, so he’s a pretty accomplished player.”His success is a vindication of the faith that was placed in him three years ago, and by extension, of the faith that South Africa has placed in the transformation process. “We’ve always rated Hash highly,” said Arthur. “He obviously had a problem when he started, but when I came in [as coach], he was always the one we identified to bat at 3 for us.”Amla’s second coming as a Test cricketer began 18 months after his England experience, when he once again topped the domestic averages to undermine the notion that he was merely a quota selection. He responded immediately with a commanding innings of 149 against New Zealand, against whom he collected his second Test century the following season in Centurion. If those two innings failed to convince the doubters that he truly belonged at the highest level, then an unbeaten seven-and-a-half hour 159 in the sapping heat of Chennai brooked no equivocation.”We needed to give him a run and an opportunity,” said Arthur. “When we look back to where the planning started for a tour like this, two years ago, we needed Hash to come into the tour with 20 Tests under his belt. He’s blossomed and repaid the faith we showed in him, and he’s going to be a quality player.””He’s so calm, he’s got a good head and he’s pretty streetwise for a player his age,” said Arthur. With two days of an historic Test series remaining, Amla has a chance to apply the finishing touches to a total team effort, and silence his naysayers for once and for all.

Another test for the slow starters

It would be sheer folly to write off an Indian line-up, unparalleled both in terms of experience and runs, as history suggests

Dileep Premachandran in Galle30-Jul-2008
The batting order may have been reworked in the second innings at the SSC, but that’s unlikely to happen in Galle © AFP
As embarrassing as defeat within four days at the SSC may have been, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. For all the batting records that India have piled up over the past decade, there has frequently been a tendency to start a series poorly. Whether home or away, the batsmen are slow starters who tend to come into their element once they’ve had a couple of innings to size up the opposition and the conditions. The smart money must surely be on Sri Lanka extending their fine record at Galle with a win that will ensure the series. But it would be sheer folly to write off an Indian line-up, unparalleled both in terms of experience and runs, as history suggests. Australia, who’ve played two memorable series in India this decade, could tell you that much.Back in 2001, Australia destroyed India inside three days at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, extending their winning streak to 16. Apart from Sachin Tendulkar, who played two brilliant innings, everyone else looked out of their depth in the first Test. At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata a fortnight later, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid scripted the partnership of a lifetime to change the course of both the second Test and series.Three years later, India’s batsmen were once again second-best in Bangalore, undoneby Australia’s superior pace attack. But in the second Test at Chepauk in Chennai, Virender Sehwag’s magnificent 155 drove home an advantage established by Anil Kumble’s sensational 7 for 48 on the opening day. Australia fought back, but India were still favourites heading into a final day, that was washed out. Those glitches were at home, but the situation has been no different away. On the last two tours of England, India were thoroughly outplayed at Lord’s in the opening Tests of both series. In 2002, Sehwag’s 84 was the only saving grace as England established a huge lead. Ajit Agarkar’s century in the second innings total of 397 only helped to reduce England’s victory margin to 170 runs.In 2007, England built a handy lead, and a dazzling century from Kevin Pietersen then set India a formidable target. It was left to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, aided by bad light and some generous umpiring, to salvage a draw.Sri Lanka will also be keenly aware of this Indian team’s ability to bounce back from dire defeats. On the last tour, India were thrashed by 10 wickets in Galle in the first Test, with a batting line-up missing Tendulkar and Laxman, managing just 187 and 180 in either innings. But in a low-scoring encounter in Kandy that followed, India overcame poor first-innings batting to snatch a famous victory. Dravid made 75, while Sourav Ganguly scored an unbeaten 98.On the eve of the second Test, Kumble insisted that there would be no panic measures. The batting order may have been reworked in the second innings at the SSC, but that’s unlikely to happen here, as well as Laxman batted at times in the first Test. “I have utmost confidence in my batsmen,” he said. With huge series coming up against Australia, England and Pakistan, a crushing defeat in Galle would mean the clamour for change becoming more than a dull buzz. This line-up has done India proud for more than a decade, but with the sand sliding towards the bottom of the timer, none of them will want to leave under ignominious circumstances.

Celtic: Hoops keen on Liel Abada

Celtic are interested in signing Israel international Liel Abada, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Abada profiled

Abada is 19 years of age and is primarily a right winger. He can also play on the left or through the middle and has already made 76 senior appearances for current employers Maccabi Petah Tikva.

The youngster, who has one international cap to his name, has scored 20 goals and registered 10 assists at club level and is under contract until 2024.

Abada’s Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed from £293,000 to £2.7m in just over a year, and it seems that Celtic are now keen on his services.

The Latest: Israeli sources share update

Israeli sources, relayed by The Scottish Sun, have claimed Celtic are interested in the 1.68m (5 foot 6) winger, along with clubs in Belgium, France and Greece.

Israeli agent Dudu Dahan has been given a mandate by Maccabi Petah Tikva to secure a transfer, with The Scottish Sun touting a £3.5m fee for Abada.

The teenager has left Israel to discuss a transfer with interested clubs, but it remains to be seen whether Celtic are one of those.

The Verdict: Wingers are needed

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is in need of some attacking additions to bolster his first team squad ahead of the new season.

He has just James Forrest, injury-plagued youngster Mikey Johnston and the returning Maryan Shved as senior wide options ahead of a Champions League qualifier later this month.

Dahan has helped Celtic to sign a number of players in recent years, including Nir Bitton and Ismaila Soro, so should the Hoops firm up their interest, they could be in a good position to get a deal over the line for the in-demand Abada.

Poor Westerns finish bottom

A round-up of the last round of matches in the Logan Cup

Cricinfo staff20-May-2008Westerns, who claimed the runners-up spot last year, ended the 2008 Logan Cup without a victory after falling to a seven-wicket defeat against Easterns at Queens Sports Club. They collapsed in their second innings from 126 for 1 to 226 all out, leaving Easterns the relatively comfortable task of chasing 119 for victory.Bornaparte Mujuru and Bradley Staddon carried their second-wicket stand to 102, but there was precious little resistance to follow. Mujuru was sixth out in the middle of the collapse for 90. Stuart Matsikenyeri’s 53-ball 54 ensured there were few problems for Easterns in knocking off the runs in 23 overs. The key difference between the teams was Easterns’ first-innings recovery from 224 for 8 – still trailing Westerns by six – to a lead of 108 through the efforts of Shingirai Masakadza at No. 10 who hit 68 off 84 balls. There was an exciting finish at the Masvingo Sports Club as Southerns pulled up 36 runs short of their target while Centrals were three wickets away from victory in a match dominated by the spinners.Michael Chinouya’s four early wickets in the run chase made it hard work for Southerns and their middle order weren’t able to recover in the time remaining. It was a fitting end to a keenly contested match, which featured two fine performances in the first innings. Tarisai Mahlunge, the opening batsman and wicketkeeper, made his maiden first-class century, finishing with 145 off 360 balls. However, he had to share the honours with legspinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi – who has four ODIs under his belt – as he claimed a career-best 8 for 125.Brighton Mugochi, a 19-year-old left-arm spinner, responded with 5 for 80 to limit Southerns’ lead to 12. Kamungozi couldn’t add to his haul in the second innings, but Hilary Matanga claimed six wickets to set up the tight finish.Final Standings

Defeat number five pushes Hampshire out of promotion race

Any hopes Hampshire Hawks had of gaining promotion to Division I of the Norwich Union League were thrown into disarray as they suffered a fifth successive defeat away to Northamptonshire Steelbacks, to languish well away from the top three.

Vic Isaacs04-Aug-2002Any hopes Hampshire Hawks had of gaining promotion to Division I of the Norwich Union League were thrown into disarray as they suffered a fifth successive defeat away to Northamptonshire Steelbacks, to languish well away from the top three.Being put into bat on the slow wicket and overcast conditions, Hampshire lost three early wickets to the seam of Darren Cousins, including that of Mascarenhas who suffered a first-ball dismissal for the second day running. The conditions were not ideal for fluent strokeplay and the sides came off for 20 minutes after a heavy shower, which meant that again Duckworth/Lewis would have a say in the matter.Three overs were sliced from the innings as John Crawley and John Francis shared 40 runs together before Crawley, playing his last match before joining the England team in Nottingham, stretched forward to the off-spinner Jason Brown and was well stumped.Nic Pothas, as he had done the previous day held the innings together but only Will Kendall offered him any support with 14 as the innings fell apart. The Steelbacks started well despite a few scares with Alan Mullally being particularly difficult on the track. But they had survived to 20 without loss after eight overs before more rain descended on the County Ground.Five overs were lost, leaving the home side to score a reduced 122 to win. But they had reached 52-0 halfway through the 15th over before the heavens opened once more and there was no further chance of play.It was not too difficult to surmise that the Steelbacks had won on a Duckworth/Lewis countback, although the 16 run D/L result flattered Hampshire.

Porto plotting £10m Alfredo Morelos bid

An update has emerged on FC Porto’s pursuit of Alfredo Morelos regarding how much they are prepared to pay for the Rangers forward.

What’s the talk?

According to The Scottish Sun, the Portuguese giants are preparing to submit a £10m offer for the Colombian striker, whose agent was in Portugal last week amid speculation over Morelos’ future, and Porto are now set to firm up their interest with a bid.

They had been working under strict guidelines after being punished by UEFA for player trading offences, but now that they are free of those shackles, they are attempting to bring Morelos to the Estadio Dragao.

Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership player said that Morelos is “non-stop” and labeled him as a nightmare for defenders, saying: “In my experience, he is just non-stop.

“There’s never a time when he’s walking about or not interested in the game. He’s always involved, whether that’s taking you away or dragging you closer to the ball.

“He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space. That means you need to start talking to your full-backs and centre-mids to start swapping players, which makes it a lot more difficult.”

Gerrard would be fuming

Rangers must avoid a major error this summer and reject Porto’s £10m bid for Morelos when it arrives at Ross Wilson’s desk next week. Wilson needs to immediately veto the proposal and demand a larger sum of money for the club’s main centre-forward.

When Porto were initially linked with the 25-year-old, we suggested that Rangers should look to cash in on him if they are able to receive a club-record £20m deal from the Portuguese club. However, £10m would not be enough to take the move over that threshold, which is why Wilson needs to turn it down.

That fee is only half of the £20m originally touted for Morelos, and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard would surely be fuming if Wilson allowed the Colombian to leave for such a paltry sum. £20m could be a major boost to Rangers’ coffers and allow Gerrard to improve his squad in several areas, making the team better as a whole rather than relying on one outstanding individual. This is why selling Morelos could make sense, but not for the significantly reduced fee of £10m.

The £33,000-per-week beast provided an impressive 17 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for Rangers last season, showing that he is a crucial member of Gerrard’s squad, and that is why the Gers should not jump to accept any fee for his services.

They need to get enough from the deal to sign a replacement and strengthen other positions if they are to justify selling him, and Gerrard would be fuming at losing a key player if he cannot duly strengthen. Wilson should stand firm and keep Morelos at Ibrox until a £20m offer comes through the door.

Leeds: Pundit tips Helder Costa to leave

Helder Costa will depart Leeds United during the summer transfer window if the prediction of former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips plays out.

The Lowdown: Peripheral figure for Leeds

The Whites has an exceptional season back in the Premier League, with numerous individuals playing big roles for Marcelo Bielsa, whether it be Illan Meslier, Kalvin Phillips or Patrick Bamford, to name just a few.

Someone who rarely played a starring role was Costa, however, with the Portuguese only making a total of 13 starts in the league.

He invariably found himself kept out of the team by the likes of Raphinha and Jack Harrison, having to make do with a squad role instead.

The Latest: Costa tipped to leave

Costa has been linked with a summer exit, and speaking to Football Insider, Phillips claimed it was time for the winger to find a new club:

“They have already got a lot of wingers. I would say that it makes it very likely that Costa will move on because he didn’t play a lot last season.

“It’s an area that they have plenty of cover in, those wide areas. So I think maybe his time at Leeds is up. He can go somewhere now and go and play regularly. Whether that means that you’ve got to drop down a league, who knows?”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-copy-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Time to move on

It makes perfect sense for Costa to leave, despite him being described as an ‘immense’ footballer by former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

His current deal doesn’t expire until 2024, meaning Leeds could receive a decent amount for him and new signings could push him even further down the pecking order.

Costa is a talented player who has still contributed for the Whites, but it feels as though the team is moving on without him and a sale makes sense for all parties.

In other news, Leeds have been tipped to sign a player from under the noses of a fellow Premier League side. Find out who it is here.
