West Ham’s frustration against Everton summed up in one image of Declan Rice

West Ham started the season in good form but there is danger of that going to waste after succumbing to their second defeat in as many games away at Everton on Saturday.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side were far from their fluid best and struggled to get going throughout but despite that both players and fans alike will feel aggrieved not to have taken something from the match.

Bernard’s opening goal for the Toffees was one that could have easily been avoided, with an attempted offside trap failing before Roberto failed to snuff out the Brazilian’s strike, which somehow sneaked under him from the byline.

The game was tight after that moment, though the home side did manage more shots, with the likes of Lanzini and Anderson coming under fire for their lack of contribution to the Hammers in attack and defence.

However, but for a brilliant combination of a Yerry Mina block and a Jordan Pickford save, West Ham would have managed an equaliser, and if Angelo Ogbonna’s effort had found the net it could have been a different game.

Their frustration is therefore understandable, and best exemplified through Declan Rice’s expression mid-way through the match.

It is a familiar feeling for Hammers’ fans at Goodison Park, having only won four times there in the Premier League era, but this one is likely more frustrating than most considering Everton’s poor run of form.

For Pellegrini, it is back to the drawing board, with the issue of how to get the most out of Sebastien Haller the most pertinent problem currently, and he will look to the next two games – home fixtures against Sheffield United and Newcastle – as an ideal opportunity to get back to winning ways.

Should they do so, West Ham could find themselves in contention to battle for European qualification, and it will remove the feeling Rice was experiencing on Saturday.

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish assures fans Jurgen Klopp is "going nowhere"

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Kenny Dalglish’s latest comments will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans, as the Reds legend said that Jurgen Klopp is “going nowhere”.

What’s he said?

Liverpool fans have suddenly been forced to picture a bleak world without their favourite German in the dugout over the last few weeks.

First his agent said Klopp and his wife do not enjoy the weather in England, then the manager himself spoke about Steven Gerrard eventually replacing him.

Dalglish has calmed the storm though, writing about Klopp’s comments in The Sunday Post: “It’s a hypothetical scenario, but one that I can see the sense in. I’m sure Jurgen is only echoing the thoughts of most of the club’s supporters.

“However, let’s be clear. Jurgen is going nowhere, and nobody with the club at heart wants to see him depart.

“He may have led the club to the Champions League last season, the biggest prize in European football. But there is much more he still wants to achieve – in particular Liverpool’s first league title since 1990 – and this season has started very well.”

Phew

We imagine Liverpool fans were picturing a post-apocalyptic world or perhaps the upside-down from Netflix show Stranger Things after even just the slightest hint that Klopp won’t be their manager forever.

In fact, we wouldn’t put it past the Anfield faithful to currently be looking into some sort of cryogenic freezing process to slow the former Borussia Dortmund boss’ ageing process and allow him to stay for several lifetimes.

And while that may be a bit of a stretch, Dalglish’s comments will certainly be music to the ears of Reds fans everywhere. The club legend attends practically every game and certainly has his ear to the ground.

Klopp has transformed the club from battling just to scrape Champions League qualification into genuine title challengers and of course kings of Europe, and it’s hard to imagine players like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker would have joined the club under a lesser manager.

It’s fair to say fans were officially freaking out at the suggestion the gaffer won’t be around forever, but it appears he won’t be going anywhere until he gets a few more titles under his belt. Phew.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk got it tactically wrong vs Everton

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Sheffield Wednesday hosted Everton in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday night as both teams took a short break from league action.

The Premier League outfit ran out 2-0 winners at Hillsborough thanks to a brace from former Blades striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

New appointment Garry Monk made eight changes to the team that salvaged a point against Fulham on Saturday with this being just his third game in charge.

The 48-year-old evidently wanted to see the peripheral members of his squad in competitive action for the very first time, even so, that may have been his first significant error as Owls boss.

He may be unbeaten after two matches in the Championship, but it is still too soon to judge. Therefore he should be trying to get fans onside at the earliest opportunity and fielding a more competitive team against Everton may have paid dividends.

The Toffees are struggling as of late in the Premier League having recorded back-to-back losses, so they were there to be got at – even if Marco Silva named a relatively strong starting XI; he made just five changes.

That train of thought was further proved in hindsight as the home side weren’t exactly swept off their feet like Nottingham Forest were against Arsenal, they could have actually got something from this match.

Wednesday recorded more shots than their top-flight opposition by having nine attempts and they even restricted them to just three efforts on target all game – two of which ended up in the back of the net, but that’s the difference between the elite and the second tier. Teams take their chances.

Two of the Owls’ most influential players started the game on the substitutes bench in Steven Fletcher, who has scored four goals this season and Kadeem Harris, who has been an essential attacking outlet for them recording one assist while averaging 1.1 crosses per game.

Given that Everton have leaked nine goals in their last four Premier League matches, it would have made sense to play the top-scorer in the team. It certainly would have given them a better fighting chance.

If the south Yorkshire club fails to make the playoffs under Monk, they could well look back upon this match and wonder why a cup run couldn’t at least have occurred.

Tottenham fans praise Harry Winks after disappointing Olympiacos draw

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur put in a disappointing display in their 2-2 draw against Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday night, and midfielder Harry Winks was one of the few players to draw some praise from Spurs fans on Twitter.

For the second time this month, the north London outfit surrendered a two-goal lead away from home to end up with just a single point, with many of Mauricio Pochettino’s men simply failing to turn up in Athens.

However, Winks made his sixth successive start this season in the Greek capital, and he was one of the few players that showed good energy and work-rate throughout the 90 minutes, outshining club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele alongside him in the centre of the park, as backed up by Football London’s match ratings.

The England international’s display didn’t go unnoticed by Tottenham supporters on the popular social media platform, with one saying he is “essential to us right now”.

Another individual went a step further and added that ‘if Ndombele is worth £65m, then he was £90m today’.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Manchester United recouping big money for Romelu Lukaku is great business

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter for a fee in the region of £73m.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks had seen both Inter and Juventus fight tooth and nail to secure Lukaku’s signature before the end of the transfer window, but Antonio Conte’s side have managed to get a deal done.

As confirmed by United’s official club website, Lukaku will be heading to Inter after only arriving from fellow Premier League side Everton back in the summer of 2017.

[ad_pod ]

That deal saw the Belgian arrive at Old Trafford for an initial £75m, and so United’s sale of the 26-year-old this summer is certainly something worthy of appreciation.

Great business

Whilst the footballing consequences of letting Lukaku go are potentially severe – the club are left with very few recognised central striking options – the business side of it certainly makes sense. Despite the Belgium international generally being a prolific goal-scorer in English football, his poor record against the big sides certainly counted against him. Could he really be considered in the same league as a Sergio Aguero or a Harry Kane?

So, getting almost all of the money back from when he first arrived is a real coup. The Red Devils may not have had time to reinvest that money in a possible replacement or a position elsewhere, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer kitty certainly takes a bit of a boost for the upcoming windows.

Even despite the ridiculous prices of players in the modern market, receiving a reported £73m for a striker who netted just 15 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions last season is good going, especially considering the lack of confidence and ill-feeling surrounding Lukaku at Old Trafford.

They may have gotten many other things wrong in the transfer window this summer, but getting a sizeable fee for an under-performing Lukaku will surely go down as a piece of great business – at least on the financial side of things.

Man United Potential Starting XIs: How Red Devils could line up during 2019/20 PL opener

[long_read]

In terms of opening day fixtures, it doesn’t get much more exciting than Manchester United versus Chelsea at Old Trafford – the game, which kicks off at 16:30 BST on Sunday 11th August, will see both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard begin their first full seasons as United and Blues managers respectively.

The top-four rivals last met on 28th April, when a Marcos Alonso goal cancelled out Juan Mata’s early opener to ensure both sides shared the spoils. Thereafter would follow two disappointing results against Huddersfield and Cardiff which saw the Red Devils crash out of the Champions League race.

Solskjaer will be hoping for a resurgent start to the 2019/20 campaign similar to that which saw his side go 12 games unbeaten after he took over from Jose Mourinho in December, although the side could have a very different look and feel to it this time around.

Having already secured the signings of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the Old Trafford outfit have injected both youth and pace into the side, while also adding crucial strength in depth in key areas. There are plenty of ways in which the ‘baby-faced assassin’ could line up his United side come August.

Below, we’ve outlined five potential XIs that could be fielded by United on the opening weekend.

[snack_break title=”Dream XI”]

United’s global appeal means that they are usually linked with every high-profile name under the sun when the transfer window rolls around and while some of these rumours are completely unrealistic, there are some potential additions that would be perfect.

Leicester’s Harry Maguire could join United for a £90m fee and the England international offers exactly what Solskjaer is looking for from his central defenders – he can stroll out from the back line and find a teammate with ease, as evidenced by his 86.1% passing accuracy, while also being stoic in defence.

The departures of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini have left United light in the middle of the park and the addition of Bruno Fernandes would give the Red Devils a truly world-class creative hub – imagine Paul Pogba and the Portuguese pulling the strings. The Sporting Lisbon captain chalked up a stellar 20 goals and 13 assists from midfield last term and, at 24 years old, still has plenty of room to get even better.

[snack_break title=”Nightmare XI”]

The aforementioned Pogba has proved a difficult player to manage and has been linked with a move away this summer. The dynamic number 6 is unplayable on his day and it would be a major loss to United if he were to find a way through the exit door before Chelsea visit next month.

Should United’s swoop for Maguire fall through, it’s possible that Red Devils fans could see either or both of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in defence again, while the extension of Ashley Young’s contract suggests that Solskjaer sees a use for the former Aston Villa man in 2019/20.

Meanwhile, the combination of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez offers Solskjaer far less mobility up front than the likes of Rashford or Anthony Martial – this team could get ripped apart.

[snack_break title=”Progressive XI”]

The additions of James, 21, and Wan-Bissaka, 21, indicate that Solskjaer is keen to stray as far away from his predecessor’s transfer policy as possible – Jose Mourinho was usually more preoccupied with signing ready-made stars like Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Former Swansea man James has already impressed with his athleticism in pre-season and was voted man of the match as he made his debut in the victory over Perth Glory – if he keeps it up, there’s no reason as to why he can’t oust Martial from the starting XI and thus make the left-wing spot his own.

Academy talent James Garner has been likened to Michael Carrick and is adept at dictating play from deep – perhaps he’s the perfect player to complement Pogba’s dynamism in the middle – while Mason Greenwood’s instinctive goal against Leeds on Wednesday suggested that he’s also ready to get an extended run in the first team.

[snack_break title=”Attacking XI”]

If Solskjaer wants to get at United’s visitors on opening day, then this is the XI he should be looking to start. Leaving out impressive new boy Wan-Bissaka is a contentious decision but the threat Diogo Dalot offers in the final third is what makes this approach appealing. The former Porto man completed a solid 1.1 key passes per game last term, whereas Wan-Bissaka managed just 0.4.

Up front, the electric combination of Martial and Rashford offers Solskjaer plenty of fluidity, while the deployment of Juan Mata at No. 10 means United have a player capable of picking out their striking duo’s runs. The inclusion of Pogba is non-negotiable, while pairing the World-Cup-winner with box-to-box Scott McTominay and holding midfielder Nemanja Matic gives United the balance in midfield.

[snack_break title=”Defensive XI”]

Starting former Palace man Wan-Bissaka at right-back ahead of Dalot means that United’s right side is basically on lock down – the number 29 completed an astonishing 3.7 tackles and 2.4 interceptions per game last term, while also being dribbled past just 0.3 times per game, according to WhoScored. There remains a place in the starting XI for Dalot, though, with the 20-year-old’s ability on the ball making him a decent option further forward while adding an extra layer of defensive protection.

The core of midfield remains the same, although Jesse Lingard should get the nod over former Blues man Mata – the England international completed 1.1 tackles per game in 2018/19 and can get stuck in when necessary, whereas the Spaniard managed just 0.4, according to WhoScored.

Rashford, meanwhile, offers threat in behind on the counter-attack and Chris Smalling gives pure physicality to the defence alongside Victor Lindelof.

Chelsea: Abraham and Mount still deserve first-team chance despite England U21 snub

How can the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount start for Chelsea if they cannot even start for the England U21 side?

That is a question some Chelsea supporters might have been asking after finding out that Aidy Boothroyd had left the two Cobham academy products on the bench for England’s 2-1 defeat to France in the European Championship.

After the year Abraham and Mount have just had, though, it would be unfair to dismiss their chances on the basis of one U21 game, especially considering the context of things.

Mount, for example, was competing against both James Maddison and Phil Foden for a place in the starting XI. Having created 100 chances last season, Maddison would arguably get into most teams in the Premier League.

As for Foden, you only have to listen to how often Pep Guardiola waxes lyrical about him to know that the 19-year-old is a truly special talent. There is no shame in being ousted out of the team by either player.

Meanwhile, in Abraham’s case, he was coming up against a striker who is deadly at this level in Dominic Solanke. Is it really surprising that Boothroyd went with a man who has nine goals in 17 U21 appearances and 10 goals in 15 U20 matches?

This defence of Abraham and Mount does not mean the duo should be automatic starters as soon as they return to Stamford Bridge. However, regardless of what happens at this tournament, they deserve a chance under Frank Lampard if he becomes the next Chelsea boss as expected, especially with the Blues unable to sign anyone this summer.

Chelsea fans, do you think Abraham and Mount are good enough to start for the club after their England U21 disappointment? Join the discussion by commenting below.

The two Crystal Palace players who don’t have a chance in 2019/20

With Roy Hodgson looking to gear up for yet another Premier League season, how do you Palace fans feel the 71-year-old manager will set up for the new campaign? Do you think you will still have the likes of Wilfried Zaha to play in your attack? It certainly is a big summer ahead.

Of course, a 12th-place finish isn’t amazing, but it wasn’t a relegation battling season and that is hugely positive for a club like Crystal Palace. But is it time we begin to see the Eagles fly up the table and make more of a challenge for those top 10 places?

Here we are going to take a look at a couple of players we feel are going to struggle in trying to step up next season.

James Tomkins

After having a fairly busy season, the 30-year-old defender may just have seen the end of his last ‘busy’ season. With players like Jairo Riedewald and Ryan Inniss coming into the side, it may be time to see some fresh new blood in their defence come the start of the new term.

There is no doubt that the English centre-back will want to continue for as long as he possibly can but, with young blood coming through playing the modern way of football, it may just be too much for him to overcome.

It will be interesting to see how a player like Tomkins handles being second choice in defence.

Wayne Hennessey

The arrival of Vicente Guaita shook the goalkeeper pecking order, leaving Wayne Hennessey in an unfavourable position.

After being shoved out after 18 games in goal, it looks as if we are going to be seeing a lot of Hennessey on the Crystal Palace bench next season, should the 32-year-old not try and move away from Selhurst Park during the summer.

We are finally seeing a Premier League proven Crystal Palace side, and it’s time for them to starting pushing for a higher finish in the Premier League table.
