The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has denied Shakib Al Hasan permission to play in the Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) following an injury to his left knee. He will instead be given time to recover ahead of September’s World Twenty20.”Shakib has been advised by the national team physio that he has to focus on rehabilitation of the injury in his left knee in the forthcoming period, during which he cannot play matches,” BCB media manager Rabeed Imam said. “This was also the suggestion of the BCB, that he gets some rest for now.”The news is a blow to the Uthura Rudras franchise, for whom Shakib had been the big pick from the list of overseas players and a possible team captain. His experience and value as a spin-bowling allrounder would almost certainly have seen him play every game.Uthura Rudras management declined to comment on Shakib’s withdrawal until they received official confirmation from the BCB.Shakib was one of five Bangladesh players set to play in the SLPL; the others are expected to appear in the tournament as planned.

Sussex order too tall for Essex

Sussex won a high-scoring game by 19 runs against Essex at Hove to go clear at the top of the Friends Life t20 South Group

24-Jun-2012
ScorecardSussex won a high-scoring game by 19 runs against Essex at Hove to go clear at the top of the Friends Life t20 South Group.Chris Nash made 52 and Joe Gatting 45 not out as Sussex set a daunting total of 209 for 6, the second highest in the competition this season. Some big hitting from Mark Pettini (44) and James Foster (47) kept Essex in contention but they fell short in the end, with Chris Liddle taking 3 for 35.Sussex’s former Essex player Scott Styris took the Man of the Match award after making a quickfire 36 and claiming 2 for 28.Luke Wright and Nash set the tone by smashing 21 runs off the second over from Graham Napier as Sussex raced to 74-0 after the six-over Powerplay. Wright carried on where he left off against Middlesex on Friday night when he made 91 as he hit sixes off David Masters and Napier before slapping a full toss from Ryan ten Doeschate straight to long off for 40 off 21 balls. The departure of Wright did not slow the scoring rate, however, as Nash and Styris continued to take the attack to Essex. Nash made his runs from 41 balls, including two fours and two sixes, before being stumped by a smart piece of work by Foster off a leg-side wide from ten Doeschate.Styris enjoyed himself against his old side as he crashed sixes off ten Doeschate and Reece Topley before being caught in the deep for 36 off 20 balls. Gatting ensured Sussex’s innings did not lose momentum as he hit a career-best score from just 22 balls, including four fours and two sixes, as the Sharks posted their second-highest total ever in the competition.Essex made a slow start in reply but remained in contention thanks to Pettini, who made 44 off 31 balls. The Eagles were well behind the run rate at halfway on 74 for 2 but some powerful hitting from Greg Smith and Foster gave them hope of pulling off a sensational win.Smith hit three sixes in his 26-ball 39 before being bowled by Will Beer while Foster hit four sixes in a row to reduce the deficit to 25 off the final over but Essex’s hopes disappeared when their captain was caught on the boundary with three balls to go.

Harris preserved, Siddle scanned

Australia’s desire to preserve Ryan Harris’ battered body for as long as possible was sharply illustrated by his resting from the Trinidad match following a man of the match display in Bridgetown

Daniel Brettig at Queen's Park Oval16-Apr-2012Australia’s desire to preserve Ryan Harris’ battered body for as long as possible was sharply illustrated by his resting from the Trinidad match following a Man-of-the-Match display in Bridgetown. Harris ended the first match of the West Indies series stating his desire to play all three Tests, but the selectors on tour decided otherwise in leaving him out for a fresher James Pattinson on a Port-of-Spain pitch likely to play lower and lower as the second Test develops.Having performed heroically at Kensington Oval with bat and ball to give Australia a 1-0 series lead, Harris was sore but not under any particular injury cloud in Trinidad. He was left out with an eye to his chequered injury history in the hope that he will be fresh by the time the third Test of the series is played in Dominica. His omission was a significant moment in the development of a squad mentality for Australia’s fast bowlers, for there could be no doubt about Harris’ performance meriting his retention.Yet instead of playing, Harris found himself taking part in lunch-time training with other non-playing members of the Test squad, in contrast to the injured Peter Siddle who also missed selection for Queen’s Park Oval. Their absence created room for the left-arm spinner Michael Beer to play his first Test since he debuted in the fifth match of the 2010-11 Ashes series.”There was no doubt with the history for Ryan but also the amount that he batted and bowled throughout that game the selectors must have thought it was good to bring a fresh James Pattinson in,” the vice-captain Shane Watson said. “To make sure that Ryan is absolutely fresh and ready to go for the third Test is going to be very important. There is no doubt Ryan had an absolutely brilliant game in the last Test match so I’ve got no doubt it would have been a very tough decision for the selectors either way.”I think it’s the way our group is continuing to go. It’s just managing individuals as well as the term can possibly manage them. It continues to be a big step forward to make sure that we get the best out of every individual. And some guys pull up differently from big bowling workloads and obviously I’ve been a part of that at times throughout my career. So I think personally it’s a really big step forward in managing players’ workloads when we are playing so much and playing back-to-back Tests consistently as well.”It also works out well that playing two spinners in these conditions is going to be very important. This wicket is quite similar in many ways to some Indian wickets that I have batted on so it’s only going to get worse. The footmarks are only going to dust up and get worse so it was a perfect opportunity to play two spinners and see how they are able to handle it.”Watson revealed that Siddle had complained of developing back soreness during the first Test, and scans had confirmed inflammation that ruled him out of the second match. Siddle now has only a narrow window of time in which to prove his fitness ahead of the final match of the series, having been kept out of limited-overs series both at home and in the West Indies in order to be at his peak for the Tests.”In the end his back had started to get sore through the last Test match and he ended up getting a few scans to be able to find out what that back pain was,” Watson said. “At the moment it’s shown it’s a little bit sore and there’s a little bit of swelling there. Through experience I know when your back gets sore it’s never a great thing.”Hopefully in Peter’s case they’ve been able to get it early enough that even if it’s just a few days rest from bowling it settles down in a quick period of time. The one thing you don’t want to do is continue to push through it … sometimes as a bowler if you do that it can put you back a fair way with stress fractures. Fingers crossed that won’t be the case and a few days’ rest will mean that he’s able to be right for the third Test.”

Wade, Maxwell set WA 362 to win

A series of lower order partnerships allowed Victoria to set Western Australia 362 to win the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG

ScorecardA series of lower order partnerships allowed Victoria to set Western Australia 362 to win the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG. The Warriors lost Marcus Harris to Jayde Herrick before the close, which arrived at 1 for 22.WA had hoped for early breakthroughs and a slimmer chase when day three began, and the Bushrangers slipped to 5 for 80 then 6 for 145 after the loss of Rob Quiney, to keep the window open. However the wicketkeeper Matthew Wade maintained his outstanding run with the bat to carve out 60, and the allrounder Glenn Maxwell made a fighting 72 to frustrate the visitors.

Ireland clinch last-over thriller against USA

A round-up of the first day’s matches in the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jul-2011In a thrilling finish, Joshua Hall hit the penultimate ball of Ireland Under-19s’ innings for four to give them a one-wicket victory against United States of America Under-19 on the opening day of the ICC Under-19 World Cup qualifying tournament in Dublin. After stuttering early in their chase of 178, Ireland had recovered through a couple of solid lower-order partnerships and had brought the equation down to six runs required off 21 balls with three wickets in hand. But a wicket fell in the 47th over and then Adam Coughlan, who had led Ireland’s recovery, was trapped lbw by seamer Mital Patel to bring USA back into the game. Ireland needed just three runs off 15 balls then but then next 13 deliveries yielded just one run before Hall’s boundary.USA had managed their total of 177 thanks to some lower order contributions after they were 82 for 5 at one stage. Jodhbir Singh was their top-scorer with 36. In the chase, Ireland collapsed to 86 for 6 before Coughlan and Graeme McCarter began the comeback.Nepal Under-19s spinners Rahul Vishwakarma and Prithu Baskota ran through Afghanistan Under-19s batting line-up to deliver their team a win. Nepal had been bowled out for 154 in 44.3 overs but left-armer Vishwakarma’s 4 for 23 and offspinner Baskota’s 3 for 19 helped them skittle Afghanistan for 112. Afghanistan had made a decent beginning to their chase with Hashmatullah Shaidi and Shir Shirzai putting together a 53-run stand for the second wicket. After that though, wickets fell in clusters, and in the end the victory margin was 42 runs. Nepal had reached their total thanks mainly to opener Subash Khakurel’s steady 54, the only half-century in the match.Canada Under-19 prevailed in a closely-fought encounter against Scotland Under-19 in Dublin. They were boosted by a century from opener Nitish Kumar, who smashed 11 fours and two sixes in his 93-ball knock. Nitish’s partnership of 78 with Kyle Edghill and a quickfire 44 from Rayyan Pathan, off just 24 balls, took Canada to a challenging 212 in 35 overs.Seamer Jobanjot Singh’s early strikes hurt Scotland in their response but the middle order stepped up. Freddie Coleman made a quick 36, Mathew Cross made scored 21 at better than a run a ball, Peter Ross contributed 43 and Aman Bailwal gave Scotland hope by top-scoring with 63. With Bailwal at the crease, Scotland were very much in it but when he fell with the score on 201 in the penultimate over, the lower order didn’t last long and the innings folded for 206 with two balls to spare. Jobanjot finished with four wickets.Namibia Under-19 eased to an 89-run win over Papua New Guinea Under-19 at the Hills Cricket Club Ground. There was no standout performer in Namibia innings but the team was helped by a series of valuable contributions: a quick 49 from opener Justin Baard, a steady 44 from captain Stephen Baard, 44 from Zhivago Groenewald who smashed four sixes and an unbeaten 33 from Christopher Coombe. The effort propelled Namibia to 232, a score their bowlers comfortably defended. Coombe and Groenewald shared six wickets in the chase and an unbeaten 41 from Toua Tom at No.9 was the only significant resistance from a PNG batsman. PNG were bowled out for 143.Kenya Under-19 thrashed Vanuatu Under-19 at the Merrion Cricket Club Ground. Opener Kennedy Ochieng made 85 and was assisted by Duncan Allan, who made 47 in 38 balls, and a half-century from wicketkeeper Irfan Karim. Their contributions took Kenya to 238 for 4 in 38 overs, and proved too much for Vanuatu. Allan struck two early blows in the chase and though the middle order attempted a recovery, the target proved well beyond the batsmen. Nalin Nipiko top-scored with 25, but the batting could not withstand the offspin of Rahul Vishram, who took 4 for 9. Vanuatu were skittled out for just 102.

Blackwell blitz keeps Durham in command

Four wickets for Monty Panesar undermined Durham as they subsided from 173 for 1 to 292 all out against Sussex in their County Championship Division One encounter at Chester-le-Street today

An onslaught by Ian Blackwell lifted the pressure off Durham and put themfirmly in command at the end of the second day of the County ChampionshipDivision One match against Sussex at Chester-le-Street.Despite a first-innings lead of 98, Durham were rocking on 79 for 4 and thevisitors must have scented further success as Blackwell initially looked all atsea. He survived a chance to slip off James Anyon on four and a return chance toMonty Panesar on five and then hit Panesar just over the fielder at long-on, whowas 10 yards in from the rope. But that blow opened the floodgates and three sixes followed, two of themfiercely pulled in one Anyon over, as Blackwell reached 50 off 44 balls. He holed out off Anyon at deep square leg for 51, leaving Dale Benkenstein andMichael Richardson to take Durham to 166 for 5 at the close, leading by 264.On a day when 14 wickets fell there was some variable bounce and the ball swungin the haze. But there was little hint of trouble for the batsmen in the firsthour.Sussex resumed on 31 for 1 and the tentative Luke Wells departed for 10 whenhe edged Callum Thorp to first slip, but Chris Nash and Joe Gatting played wellto take the score to 108 for 2.Then three wickets went down on the same score. Ruel Brathwaite struck in hissecond over, when a hint of away movement had Nash lbw for 65. Although Thorp had bowled for over an hour, he switched ends after a short restand took two wickets in his first four balls.Gatting was lbw for 27 and Ben Brown edged to third slip, then acting captainMurray Goodwin departed in the last over before lunch, popping up a catch toshort leg off Blackwell’s second ball of the day.Sussex were 119 for 6 and got to 198 only because of Andrew Hodd’s excellentinnings of 67. He had to bat with a flimsy tail and was last out when he liftedBlackwell to mid-off.Durham struggled to build on their lead against some fiery bowling from RanaNaved-ul-Hasan and Amjad Khan.Rana steamed in for 11 overs in a superb opening burst but his only reward camefrom perhaps the worst ball he bowled. Gordon Muchall had a dab at it and edgedto Hodd.Michael Di Venuto lasted only until the ninth ball of the innings, clippingKhan to midwicket, while Anyon struck in his first over for the second time inthe match, having Will Smith caught behind.Ben Stokes played several fine strokes in reaching 26 but then fell lbw to aball from Panesar which kept very low. That brought in Blackwell and by the timehe departed Durham’s jitters had vanished.

South Africa depart amid huge support, Smith optimistic

There was a band playing outside the Sandton Sun hotel where the South African team were leaving for the airport to head to the subcontinent. It was a typically African band complete with rhythmic drumming and shakers, and played a beat that captured a certain South African essence, the essence of a country that prides itself for living by the concept of – I am because we are.Ubuntu is also the name of Cricket South Africa’s latest campaign – a roadshow that is travelling to every province in the country to galvanise support for the national team. They’ve gone to all corners, even other sporting codes. The national rugby coach, Peter de Villiers and lock Victor Matfield, were at the farewell function for the cricketers last week. Today, footballers Ricardo Katze and Calvin Marlin presented Smith with a football for the team to play with when they need some downtime. There’s a massive sense of déjà vu to eight months ago, when the country was encouraged to rally behind the football team, Bafana Bafana, during the World Cup. Bands were heard in every shopping centre, at every fan park and even on random street corners. It’s their music which convinced South Africans that they were one, and CSA are hoping the beats can do that again ahead of the cricket World Cup. So far, it’s worked.”We’ve had so much wonderful support and the energy around the country has been terrific,” Graeme Smith said. “We’ll get on the plane today knowing that there are a lot of people behind us, and knowing that we represent those people, and hopefully we can do them proud.”It sounds like massive burden for the squad to bear, especially because South Africa are yet to win a World Cup. The expectation this time is slightly less than it’s been in previous years, perhaps because people are reluctant to hope too much, but the silent strain is still there. This team is still expected to do what has not been done before. “As an international sportsman, pressure is a part of your life, whether it’s walking down the street or walking out to bat,” Smith said. “If we can play some good cricket upfront and get some confidence going, hopefully this team can achieve some great things.”South Africa’s tournament begins on February 24 against West Indies, a team who, in the past, have enjoyed being a banana-skin side for them in the World Cup, beating them in the quarter-final in 1996 and in the opening game in 2003.South Africa don’t want to place too much importance on the match simply because it’s their opening game. “It’s important to get off to a good start in a competition like this but it’s not the be all and the end all,” Corrie van Zyl, South Africa’s coach, said. “If we are going to be really result-driven and worry about the outcome of that game, it may trip us.”The phrase result-driven made it into both van Zyl’s and Smith’s answers many times, and both were insistent that adopting the attitude of obsessing about winning will be dangerous. “Because of the history we are so worried about whether we will get past the quarter-finals or the semi-finals,” van Zyl said. “If we can keep our focus on each day, each game and all our processes, and focus on what what we are doing at present, it will take away that sort of pressure.” South Africa have reached the knockout stages in four out of five World Cups but have been unable to progress to a single final. This time their approach is different. Smith joked that the only way to prepare for the knockouts would be by “not preparing,” and that thinking of that stage of the tournament is “getting too far ahead of ourselves.” He said that the team simply wants to build up good form, starting in the first warm-up match on Saturday against Zimbabwe where “we can achieve our own goals and make sure everyone gets a run.”For Smith, it’s the last opportunity to achieve his goals as a limited-overs captain. Having led the one-day team since 2003, and will step down after the World Cup. He believes that the eight years of experience as a leader is now at its climax. “I am best prepared to lead the side in this World Cup. I would love to walk away knowing I’ve given my best.”van Zyl thinks the best really is possible, because the tournament is the culmination of “eight to nine months of work” in which South Africa have played one-day series in India, West Indies, and the UAE. “We were preparing for subcontinent conditions and strategies that will be applicable for those conditions. We’ve got a good squad with a lot of options.”He said this with the same sort of confidence that another man, Carlos Alberto Parreira, who was then the coach of the South African football team, used to have. Parreira and his team won the hearts of South Africans even though they could not progress to the second round. The South African cricket team will not have that luxury, but they may not need it because what van Zyl does have that Parreira didn’t, is a team that are genuine contenders for the title.

Celtic backed to sign new goalkeeper

Former Scotland international Alan Hutton has backed Celtic to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, offering a stronger backup to Joe Hart and replacing Vasilis Barkas.

The Lowdown: Goalkeeping outgoings?

The Hoops have enjoyed a superb season, lying on the cusp of another Scottish Premiership title, and Hart has played his part between the sticks.

The 35-year-old has started 32 league games, as well as five in the Europa League, proving that he can still perform at a high level.

Barkas has been linked with a move away from Celtic after struggling for playing time, so a new stopper could be required in the summer transfer window.

Bodo/Glimt ‘keeper Nikita Haikin is one player who has been tipped to come in.

The Latest: Pundit talks up new signing

Hutton, a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live who of course spent some of his playing career across town at Rangers, was reacting to news from a Celtic source that they will look to replace Barkas.

He told Football Insider:

“I always think it’s a difficult one. Obviously, everybody wants to play but the goalkeepers are a specialised position.

“You want to push somebody on but if you’re second choice, you know you’re not going to play an awful lot. So you have to have someone in there with a really good, strong mentality. It can be difficult.

“Everybody needs competition. Joe Hart’s no different. I still believe he can play for a good number of years, he’s got a lot of football left in him.

“He’ll want that pressure on his shoulders as well so he performs at a top level. The only problem is you need to get somebody out, Barkas or Bain or whoever.

“You can’t bring in another keeper and be sitting there with four goalkeepers. The squad isn’t balanced. That’ll probably happen first and foremost but of course, they’ll need somebody in to challenge.”

The Verdict: Makes complete sense

A stronger deputy to Hart makes perfect sense going into next season, especially with Champions League football looking likely to return to Parkhead.

At 35, Hart certainly isn’t getting any younger, while an injury to him would require a good ‘keeper to fill the void left by him and not look overawed doing the job.

The money received for qualifying for Europe’s best club competition would generate more transfer funds, increasing Ange Postecoglou’s chances of bringing in a more-than-competent rival for Hart.

Acuado, o Vila Nova decidiu responder as chegadas do Aparecidense.

2º tempo morno

No Vila.
