Pakistan’s bowling allrounder Fatima Sana is set to join the New Zealand domestic side Canterbury for the Women’s Super Smash. Sana will be part of the team for the first six rounds of the competition, which begins on Tuesday with Canterbury facing Auckland.”Joining the Canterbury Magicians is a fantastic opportunity, and I am eager to contribute my best to the team’s success,” Sana said as per a release. “The Super Smash is known for its competitive nature, and I am looking forward to the challenges while learning from and sharing my experiences with my new team-mates.”Sana, 22, was already in New Zealand, where she played in all three T20Is and ODIs. She grabbed 3 for 18 and 3 for 22 in the first two T20Is respectively, giving Pakistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series and scripting their first T20I series win outside Asia and Ireland. Although they lost the third T20I, Sana was named the Player of the Series for taking six wickets in the series.Later in the ODIs, she scored an unbeaten 90 in the second game, although Pakistan lost the match by one wicket – and with it, the series – before going on to win the third ODI via the Super Over.Canterbury head coach Rhys Morgan said he was “delighted” to welcome Sana to the team.”Her international experience and record make her a valuable addition to our squad,” he said. “We believe her presence will not only enhance the team’s performance but also contribute to the interest in this year’s Super Smash.”Sana, who has played 29 T20Is for Pakistan, had also represented Barbados Royals in the Women’s CPL in the West Indies last year. She had picked up three wickets in the two matches she played.Last month, Sri Lanka batter Chamari Athapaththu signed up for Northern Brave in the Super Smash. She is expected to be available for selection for the game against Wellington on January 2.

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jan-2024India batter Suryakumar Yadav has had surgery on his groin in Munich on January 17 for a sports hernia, a condition that worsened over time and required medical intervention. This is the second surgery he has had in recent months after the one for an ankle injury he suffered during India’s tour of South Africa in December.”I want to thank everyone for their concerns and well wishes for my health, and I am happy to tell you all that I will be back very soon,” he said in a post on X after the surgery. Suryakumar had been in Bengaluru until a week ago for rehab for the ankle surgery and he is likely to begin rehab after the groin surgery in mid-February. The final match of the series in Bengaluru was the first T20 international in history to be decided after two Super Overs.

He told reporters: “A good season will be top five. I hope we can achieve that top five at the end of the season because I think we would deserve it. I think the fans have to be patient with us. There’s a new manager, with new players and new tactics, so we know last season wasn’t really good for the team. ECB 'explored every option' to avoid WPL clash with NZ tour

The ECB has made an unsuccessful request to New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to move the dates of England’s upcoming women’s tour, with four players deemed unavailable for the first three T20Is as a result of their Women’s Premier League (WPL) commitments in India and two others pulling out of their franchise contracts.NZC confirmed the fixtures in July for the tour, which comprises five T20Is and three ODIs between March 19 and April 6. The BCCI had only publicly announced the window for the WPL last Wednesday, with the final scheduled for March 17 in Delhi – two days before the opening T20I in Dunedin.ESPNcricinfo understands that the ECB asked NZC to consider shifting the series back but were told it would not be possible. “We explored every option available to us to make sure all our players were available during the New Zealand series, but that didn’t quite work out as we would have liked,” Jon Lewis, England’s coach, said.”Yes, there are things that other boards could have done, but they’re things that are totally out of our control to be honest. We’ve had to react to the situation as best we can… it’s quite a unique situation. It’s quite complex… we talk to everyone as individuals and work out what we think is the best plan for them.”Lewis blamed the late release of the WPL’s schedule, which was decided several months after NZC had confirmed the dates of England’s tour. “[The series] was in our diary for a very long period of time,” he said. “The WPL dates came out very late. Moving forward, all the boards around the world will create a window for the WPL similar to the men’s game.”Related

  • Nat Sciver-Brunt: 'I'd be lying if I said money wasn't a factor'

The ECB told the eight England players with WPL contracts that to be considered for selection in the first three T20Is, they would need to leave India before the knockout stages. Jonathan Finch, the director of England women’s cricket, said: “All players participating in the WPL were given our backing to remain in India for the duration of the tournament.”Lauren Bell (UP Warriorz) and Heather Knight (Royal Challengers Bangalore) both pulled out of their deals last week. “They withdrew once they learnt that the WPL regulations don’t allow for replacements mid-tournament, not wanting their respective WPL teams to be disadvantaged by their early departure,” Finch said.Lewis himself will leave the WPL after UP Warriorz’s final group game on March 11, with assistant coach Ashley Noffke likely to deputise if they reach the knockout stages. “I had good discussions with the franchise,” Lewis said. “Hopefully, we’re in a really strong position. We’ve got a lot of cover in the coaching department and UP have been really accommodating.”Jon Lewis: “Moving forward, all boards around the world will create a window for the WPL similar to the men’s game”•ICC via Getty Images

England named two separate T20I squads on Friday, one for the first three matches and another for the final two. Hollie Armitage and Linsey Smith will be replaced by Alice Capsey (Delhi Capitals), Sophie Ecclestone (UP Warriorz), Nat Sciver-Brunt (Mumbai Indains) and Danni Wyatt (UP Warriorz) ahead of the fourth T20I. Kate Cross (RCB) will arrive for the ODIs, while Issy Wong (MI) was not selected for either format.”We tried to make sure that all the players that are in New Zealand with us will get a really fair crack, rather than worrying about Nat Sciver-Brunt getting knocked out [of the WPL] on one day, flying in three days later and taking their position in the team,” Lewis said, framing the clash as “a brilliant opportunity” to test England’s depth ahead of the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later this year. With Wyatt in India for the full WPL, Tammy Beaumont looks set to open the batting in the first three T20Is and will win her 100th cap in the format. A pedestrian strike rate meant she has spent two years out of the side since her 99th, but she has since shown her dynamism in domestic cricket. “We asked her to go away and improve in certain areas,” Lewis said. “She went away and she did that.”Mahika Gaur, who has played in England’s last two T20I series, is unavailable as she continues to study for her A-Levels, while Freya Kemp has been picked as a specialist batter for the parallel England A tour to New Zealand after a recurrence of a back injury. Kirstie Gordon (T20s) and Grace Scrivens (ODIs) will captain the secondary tour, while Tash Farrant and Emma Lamb both feature after back injuries.England T20I squad vs New Zealand: Hollie Armitage*, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey+, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone+, Lauren Filer, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones, Heather Knight (captain), Nat Sciver-Brunt+, Linsey Smith*, Danni Wyatt+ ()England ODI squad vs New Zealand: Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones, Heather Knight (capt), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Danni WyattEngland A squad vs New Zealand: Georgia Adams, Hannah Baker, Alice Davidson-Richards, Tash Farrant, Kirstie Gordon (T20 captain), Freya Kemp, Emma Lamb, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Sophie Munro, Grace Potts, Paige Scholfield, Grace Scrivens (ODI captain), Seren Smale, Rhianna Southby, Mady Villiers

The Turkish giants are reportedly keeping close tabs on the Wolves' goalkeeper as a potential reinforcement this summer. The Super Lig champions are still keeping Ter Stegen their top priority, but with the German still standing firm on his contract with Barcelona, they are preparing a Plan B. Sa, who joined Wolves in 2021, made 30 appearances last season and has still two years left on his contract.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The situation between Ter Stegen and Barcelona remains tense since he has been informed that he will no longer be the first-choice goalkeeper next season. Upon returning to pre-season training, the German reportedly trained alone in the gym, away from the rest of the squad. Despite Barca's clear stance, Ter Stegen is adamant about staying with the Spanish champions and competing for his place with the new signing Joan Garcia.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray, who are entering a new era following Fernando Muslera's departure after 14 years, are ready to table a four-year contract offer for Ter Stegen, including a salary hike on the condition that he is released on a free transfer. The club are maintaining open communication with the 33-year-old’s camp in case his stance softens in the coming weeks, but are keeping other options open.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Ter Stegen has won 19 trophies with Barcelona since his arrival at the club in 2014. These include six La Liga titles, five Copas del Rey, three Supercopa de Espana, and one apiece of the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. However, he missed long spells in two of the last three campaigns, including a knee injury that kept him sidelined for eight months.

WHAT NEXT FOR TER STEGEN AND GALATASARAY?

The Barcelona captain is likely to make a final decision on his future in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Galatasaray, who are also actively working to sign striker Victor Osimhen from Napoli, will be closely watching the situation. If Ter Stegen chooses to stay at Barca, the Turkish giants are likely to open negotiations with Wolves.

Babar, Rizwan, Malik, Wasim, Nawaz leave for PSLWhile on a high, Rangpur, like other teams, will have to bear with the exodus of the Pakistan players. PSL teams will be expecting them to arrive this week, with the competition starting on February 17. The likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz will exit the BPL. They are unlikely to return as the BPL ends on March 1, in the middle of the PSL season.Among the Pakistan players, Malik had a week to remember. He returned to the BPL to rejoin Fortune Barishal after the two parties had a brief fallout. Malik took 2 for 24 before closing out a tight game against then league leaders Khulna Tigers with an unbeaten 25-ball 41. It was only the second close game in the season.Related

Batter of the week – Mohammad NaimThe paradox that is Mohammad Naim continued at this BPL. He has struck 12 sixes, the most among the Bangladeshi batters. He has provided Dhaka with a number of good starts, but his overall BPL numbers this season stand at 192 runs in seven innings, with a 125.49 strike rate. It must be frustrating for Naim that he can’t turn that corner to bring up big scores as an opener, particularly in a T20 World Cup year with Bangladesh still looking for big-hitters up top.Bowler of the week – Aamer JamalJamal followed up his heroics in Australia with figures of 5 for 23 in his last appearance for Comilla, against Khulna. He removed the dangerous Evin Lewis, before following it up with the wickets of compatriots Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf. He wrapped up the five-for with the scalps of Nahidul Islam and Nasum Ahmed.

Healy thrilled with Bangladesh gains ahead of T20 World Cup

Alyssa Healy was left delighted with the experience and knowledge her team were able to take away from the tour of Bangladesh with an eye on the T20 World Cup later this year.Australia completed a cleansweep of the visit, their first in bilateral cricket, with a 77-run victory in the final T20I and it was the fourth time their bowling attack kept Bangladesh to under 100. They will return in late September to defend the T20 World Cup title and Healy believed the trip ticked plenty of boxes.Related

“Everyone in the squad is taking something home that they can work on for when we come back here in September, so it’s been hugely worthwhile for us,” Healy said. “The results went our way but from a big picture perspective, and what we’re building towards in September, October, I think we got everything we possibly could out of this series.”The tour was concluded with two players returning from long-term injuries, Tayla Vlaeminck and Sophie Molineux, taking player of the match and series awards respectively. Vlaeminck took a career-best 3 for 12 while Molineux finished the T20I series with six wickets at 8.33 as the pair all-but assured their places at the World Cup.”It’s obviously great to have someone like Tay back, she’s a real point of different within world cricket, with the sheer pace she bowls with, and Soph Molineux’s consistency is outstanding so they’re both real attributes to our side,” Healy said.Tayla Vlaeminck made a mark on her return to Australia duty•Getty Images

“We’ve had different players of the match and different players of the series across the two series, so that’s been really pleasing as well. Everybody’s standing up and when they need to, and grabbing opportunities which is cool.”Although the margins of victory were convincing in all six matches, Healy felt her team had been put under pressure by the home side. In the first ODI they were 48 for 4 and 146 for 7 before the lower order lifted them to a strong total and in the final T20I had to work hard to post 155 from being 98 for 5.”In particular with the ball they [Bangladesh] challenged our batting line-up,” she said. “They will be a real threat come the World Cup. Home conditions are a real advantage and I think the team will fly under the radar a little bit. They’ll be really dangerous for some of the top sides.”The conditions, especially the heat, also pushed the visitors with Healy prepared for more of the same at the World Cup although did not expect the pitches early in the tournament to offer the extreme turn seen at times in this series. Australia will split their matches between Dhaka and Sylhet which was not part of this tour.”We’ve heard it [the heat] will be even worse come September, October so we’ll have to wait and see what it throws at us there,” Healy said. “Naturally being an ICC event, I think the wickets will start out being really good then probably tire throughout the tournament.”1:59

The experienced Jess Jonassen was the significant omission for this tour while Darcie Brown was ruled out with a stress fracture of her foot. The central contract list will be announced early next week while the players themselves now have time off following a hectic season which included series against West Indies, India and South Africa alongside the WBBL and, for many, the WPL.They will return to action with a T20I series against New Zealand in September as a lead-in to the World Cup, which will be followed straight after by the WBBL. They then host India in December and travel to New Zealand before Christmas ahead of the multiformat Ashes in January.”We’ve got a great break now. Our group is looking forward to going home and having a little bit of time off and a great opportunity to refresh and actually get ourselves right for the back end of the year, which is a huge summer for us,” Healy said.
