Al-Nassr manager Jorge Jesus has admitted he tried and failed to sign Fernandes back when he was in charge at Al-Hilal, a side he left in May. The attacking midfielder has been the subject of a £100 million ($135m) offer from the Saudi Pro League team but Jesus says the Portugal international was committed to the Red Devils and head coach Ruben Amorim.

    WHAT JESUS SAID

"I wanted to [sign him], but Bruno is determined to stay," Jesus told Sport Informa. "We already talked last year. This year I knew he had made the decision to continue with Amorim. He's in a league that they say is the best in the world, but I don't agree. For me, it's the Spanish league."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jesus and Fernandes briefly worked together at Sporting CP in the 2017-18 season when the Portuguese giants lifted the Taca da Liga cup. The two are likely to still have a good relationship but it seems that was not enough to lure Fernandes away from United to the cash-rich Middle East.

    WHAT NEXT?

Fernandes, whose Old Trafford contract runs until 2027, has decided to stay with United for the upcoming season, despite the Red Devils finishing 15th in the Premier League last term. Another poor season, though, may push the 30-year-old to leave the club in 2026.

Jonny Bairstow: 'It doesn't really matter to me where I bat'

England’s decision to deploy him at No. 4 “a compliment” from team management, Bairstow says

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jun-2024Jonny Bairstow has described England’s decision to deploy him at No. 4 for their T20 World Cup defence as “a compliment”, acknowledging his versatility. Bairstow missed England’s 2022 triumph in Australia after suffering a career-threatening ankle break and has only played six T20Is since, but it set to play a key role in England’s middle order.Bairstow had been earmarked to open the batting at the last T20 World Cup, before an injury sustained on the golf course ruled him out. He opened in four T20Is against New Zealand last summer, a role he also performs for his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings; but the irresistible rise of Phil Salt, who scored back-to-back hundreds as opener in the Caribbean over the winter and played a big role in Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2024 title win, means Bairstow will slot in lower down. The 34-year-old has plenty of experience at No. 4, the spot where he has batted most frequently outside of opening, and scored a career-best 90 against South Africa two summers ago.Related

“I’ve batted all over,” Bairstow said after England’s victory over Pakistan at The Oval on Thursday. “It doesn’t really matter to me where I bat. It’s actually a compliment that Jos [Buttler] and Motty [Matthew Mott] think I’ve got the skillset to bat at four. I’ve done it a lot. Whether it’s opening the batting or batting at four, to be able to recall your skills even in Test cricket is exactly what you have to do through the middle.”Bairstow made 21 off 18 at Edgbaston, in the first of two outings during the rain-affected series with Pakistan, before helping finish off England’s chase at The Oval with an unbroken stand of 46 off 27 balls alongside Harry Brook. How the two Yorkshiremen dovetail in the middle order could be key for England in the Caribbean.”It’s important to get into the rhythm of finishing games off,” Bairstow said. “Harry and I are batting four and five at the moment and we want to see games through till the end. It’s about carrying on with the style that we want to keep playing in. We took the right options and it worked out.”Bairstow heads into the T20 World Cup after a gruelling winter programme, during which he was the only England player to feature in the 50-over World Cup, the Test tour of India and the IPL. He achieved two significant milestones, playing both his 100th ODI and 100th Test in Dharamsala, but endured mixed form as England surrendered their ODI title and then went down 4-1 in the Tests.

“You’re under pressure all the time to perform and that’s how you want to play your cricket because when the pressure overs are on, you’re able to go back to those days when you might have got 20 off 15 but you got over the line”Jonny Bairstow on the IPL 2024 experience

However, after being dropped by Punjab Kings partway through the IPL, he roared back into form with a scintillating 108 not out from 48 balls, helping his side to pull off the highest successful chase in T20 history. He finished the tournament with 298 runs at a strike rate of 152.82.”I was happy with the IPL,” he said. “We were at a new ground. It was a good experience playing against world-class players all the time. You’re under pressure all the time to perform and that’s how you want to play your cricket because when the pressure overs are on, you’re able to go back to those days when you might have got 20 off 15 but you got over the line. Or you’re playing against Jasprit Bumrah or the guys that we’re going to come up against the World Cup. It’s then about going back on those experiences, which hopefully carry you over the line.”He also played down the significance of England’s failed World Cup campaign in India last year, where a side led by Buttler and featuring a number of the same players crashed out ignominiously during the round-robin group stage.”Completely different format. Different conditions. Different group. So yeah, we’re going to the T20 World Cup very hopeful of putting on a good performance”

Reece James told he's 'better than Trent Alexander-Arnold' as Chelsea captain looks to overcome injury woes

Reece James has been told that he is "worth £150m" and "better than Trent Alexander-Arnold" as the Chelsea captain bids to overcome his persistent injury woes. James has endured a tumultuous three-year spell plagued by recurring muscle and knee problems, resulting in sporadic availability. His 19 Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season marked his highest total since the 2021–22 campaign.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Since December 2020, James has suffered nine separate hamstring injuries and missed well over 400 days of football, while he also underwent major surgery in late 2023. A talismanic presence for Chelsea when fit, his limited minutes, including just 12 Premier League starts last season, have repeatedly raised concerns over his long-term viability.

    WHAT PAT NEVIN SAID

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin didn’t hold back with his assessment, describing James as "stupidly good" and unmatched when at peak condition. Nevin told football betting sitehe said: "If Reece James was fit, he'd be worth £150 million. He's just stupidly good. He is that brilliant. There's nobody like him. And honestly, I put him above Trent Alexander-Arnold. At his best, fully fit, he was unbeatable. His quality going forward was staggering. He looked like a man playing with boys most of the time. But it's back to the injury thing. Had he been fully fit for the last couple of years he would be England’s definite fullback, 100%. I'm not even concerned. England are quite strong in that position, but 100 % it’s him. On top of that, he would be worth fortunes."

However, Nevin stressed that talent alone won’t put James in the frame for a big-money move in the future because fitness must accompany ability.

"Every club in the world would want him, but Chelsea wouldn't sell him. Why would they? Because they'd be the best of the best," he said. "The problem you've got now is the injuries. Nobody's going to pay that money for him. However good he is, if he's only going to play 10, 15 games and don't just look at last season, you've got to look at the last three or four. You've to look at them all. And it's nothing against him."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nevin drew a comparison to former Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney, another player renowned for flashes of brilliance interrupted by injury. He recounted a recent appearance where Tierney starred before being forced off due to a cramp; a reminder that fleeting glimpses of form mean little without continuity.

"I was at Celtic Park the other day there, and Kieran Tierney at his first game back for Celtic. He was brilliant, absolutely light years ahead of everybody else on the pitch. And then he went off injured after 63 minutes," he said.

"And that's it. That's all it is. And with Tierney, I think it's just a bit of a cramp or something and you should be okay. But Tierney, like Reece, fully fit, absolutely everybody wants him. So that's what you've got, Reece, now. Keep him around, well, it's a lot of money to pay to keep somebody around just to get up the team. I'm afraid that doesn't work. You need to be able to produce a product."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

With the right-back role physically demanding, Nevin suggested Chelsea consider redeploying James into midfield to lessen the toll, a strategy already applied by Enzo Maresca during the recent Club World Cup. A deeper position, sitting at No. 6 rather than marauding wing-back, could play to his strengths while preserving his body.

"I felt for the last two years, his position is going to be sitting in midfield," he added.

"That's it, because his body doesn't want to do that flying up, flying up, flying up, down, which you have to do the right fullback position, wingback position, and also what he was brewing at.

"So that kind of slightly deeper line, sixth position. Chelsea are so well, well covered in that position. It's unbelievable. But James is as good as any of them. So it may well be that he spends a bit more time there."

Barcelona's registration problems worsen as Hansi Flick sweats over five players including Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia less than two weeks before La Liga opener

With time running out before the new La Liga season, Barcelona scramble to ensure key players are registered and eligible for competitive action.

Five players remain unregistered ahead of new seasonFFP and revenue measures critical to completing registrationsBarcelona avoid relying on Ter Stegen’s injury  Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Barcelona now have a fifth player who needs to be registered to Hansi Flick's side ahead of their La Liga opener on August 16. As well as Marcus Rashford, Joan Garcia, Roony Bardghji and Wojciech Szczesny, Gerard Martin is also unregistered. The left-back recently renewed his contract and moved from the reserve team to the first team, meaning he requires registration under La Liga rules. The club’s squad is nearly set aside from finalising the departures of Inaki Pena and Oriol Romeu. Barcelona are under pressure to complete all registrations ahead of the season start, according to a report from .

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona’s registration issues reflect ongoing financial and administrative constraints. The club waits on new revenue streams including a sponsorship deal with the Democratic Republic of Congo and the approval of VIP seating to ease financial fair play pressures. Using Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s long-term injury as a registration relief method remains an option but is deemed undesirable by club president Joan Laporta, as it would create a future liability. Bardghji's registration is less problematic due to his reserve team status but he would require a first-team contract if he features regularly for the senior side. Hansi Flick’s preference to have Martin as Alejandro Balde’s backup for the start of the season makes completing these registrations urgent. Moreover, Rashford is confident about his registration.

DID YOU KNOW?

Barcelona's La Liga season kicks off on August 16 against Mallorca, a fixture that now carries additional pressure as the club works to finalise player registrations. Players moving from reserve to first team mid-cycle, like Martin, trigger mandatory registration requirements, complicating squad management.

Victoria, NSW pressure brings changes to new T20 competition

The tournament, to played early in the season, will now feature the eight WBBL sides plus a team from ACT

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2024

WBBL teams will now feature in a new competition early in the season•Getty Images

The new women’s domestic T20 competition in Australia will now be aligned to the eight WBBL clubs, alongside an ACT side, rather than state teams after pressure from Victoria and New South Wales over the proposed structure. The tournament, designed to make up for the reduced WBBL which has been trimmed to a 40-game regular season, was initially going to be state-based but Victoria and New South Wales, who both provide two teams in the WBBL, were unhappy with that model and feared some of their fringe players could potentially lose out on playing opportunities.Under the solution thrashed out by the states and CA, there will now be eight teams under their WBBL banners plus a side from ACT who play in the WNCL one-day tournament. The competition will take place before the WBBL season with each side playing four matches and the top four teams moving to the semi-finals.The timing of the tournament means it will run alongside the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh so the Australia players won’t be involved which naturally opens up spots in teams while overseas stars are not expected to feature prominently.A complicating factor will be around ACT who have a number of players contracted to WBBL clubs including key batter Katie Mack who plays for Adelaide Strikers. With the WBBL being trimmed to match the BBL in an attempt to manage the increasing workloads of the game’s leading players, ensure overseas names still want to join, encouraging growth in crowds and to cut out non-primetime matches, there was a strong push to ensure that there was not an overall reduction in matches for state cricketers. The restructuring of the women’s domestic programme was announced at the launch of CA’s Women’s and Girls Action Plan last month but since then the stance of Victoria and New South Wales has required reworking of the original plans.”Cricket NSW has always been committed to the success of the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder and the tournament announced today will help both of our clubs in their quest for WBBL success and to produce players for Australia,” New South Wales chief executive Lee Germon said.”That enhanced player pathway is in the best interests of Australian Cricket and provides further opportunity for the continued success of our national women’s teams.”The delay in confirming the structure of the competition also meant that state contracts, which would normally have been confirmed by the end of April, were put on hold amid the uncertainty. The new T20 competition will raise the average female domestic player salary for 2024-25 to AU$163,322 while the current WBBL salary cap has been maintained meaning no reduction in player payments.

Jayden Seales seals rout for Sussex with second-innings five-for

West Indian fast bowler in formidable form as Derbyshire lose in three days

ECB Reporters Network05-May-2024Sussex 479 (Pujara 113, Coles 72, Alsop 64, Haines 58) beat Derbyshire 246 (Tickner 47) and 109 (Seales 5-29) by an innings and 124 runsAn electric spell of reverse swing bowling from Jayden Seales inspired Sussex to a crushing victory over Derbyshire inside three days in the Vitality County Championship match at Derby. The 22-year old West Indian fast bowler took a career-best 5 for 29 and was twice on a hat-trick as Derbyshire crumbled to 109 for 9, with Blair Tickner absent hurt, to lose by an innings and 124 runs.Danny Lamb opened the way for Seales’s devastating burst by taking 2 for 10 after he scored 37 in the morning before the visitors were bowled out for 479, a lead of 233.Any chance Derbyshire had of avoiding an innings defeat vanished when they collapsed from 71 for 2 and the match ended with Derbyshire’s New Zealand fast bowler Tickner unable to bat after he revealed on social media that his wife has been diagnosed with a serious illness.Sussex already had a healthy lead of 111 going into what became the last day and although Cheteshwar Pujara added only nine runs to his overnight 104, the lower order ensured they secured maximum batting points.Derbyshire at least had the incentive of a new ball that was only three overs old and Daryn Dupavillon made full use of it by removing the overnight pair.Jack Carson was tempted into cutting at a wide ball and was caught behind before Pujara was lured into an indecisive shot by a ball that moved away enough to take the edge. But Finn Hudson Prentice and Lamb added 49 to stretch the lead towards 200 before Lamb gave Morley the charge and was stumped. After Ollie Robinson drove Morley for six, he chipped the spinner to short midwicket and when Hudson-Prentice holed out to long on, Derbyshire had five overs to negotiate before lunch.David Lloyd and Luis Reece survived with few alarms but it was a different story after the interval once Seales made the first breakthrough.Lloyd tried to pull a ball which struck him on the thigh pad and was lbw before Reece aimed a big drive at Hudson- Prentice and played on.The collapse gathered momentum with Wayne Madsen lbw to Lamb aiming to work through midwicket and Brooke Guest edging a drive into his stumps.Seales then returned at the City End to make the ball reverse at pace and keep low which was too much for a team already sliding towards defeat. His first ball bowled Aneurin Donald and the next pinned Anuj Dal in front. Zak Chappell survived the hat-trick ball but more mayhem followed in his next over.Matt Lamb was beaten by rapid swing and Jack Morley yorked although Seales was denied another chance of a hat-trick when Sussex turned to spin to improve their over rate.Chappell struck a few defiant blows before he was caught at wide long on and with Tickner, who chose to play in the game, absent the match was over.It was Sussex’s second win of the season but they were deducted a point from their haul of 24 for a slow over rate while Derbyshire finished with three bowling points.

Elwiss, Kemp provide fireworks as Vipers outgun Sunrisers

England past Georgia Elwiss and future Freya Kemp recorded their highest Charlotte Edwards Cup scores as holders Southern Vipers comfortably beat Sunrisers by 19 runs.Elwiss and Kemp put on an unbroken 110-run stand – a Vipers record for any wicket – with 73 and 55 respectively to set Sunrisers an imposing target of 172. Mady Villiers and Jo Gardner – who bagged her maiden CEC half-century – put on 75 to give Sunrisers hope but Vipers’ attack squeezed and secured them their first victory of the campaign – as they aim for a three-peat.Charli Knott got Vipers off to a flier after they were stuck in, with three boundaries in the first over as she took the aggressor role in the early stages. It proved her downfall as with the penultimate ball of the powerplay she was sublimely caught by Cordelia Griffith at cover, with Vipers ending the first six overs on 47 for 1.Spin duo Jodi Grewcock and Mady Villiers stemmed the tide with their first four overs only conceding 17 runs. But it was Nicola Hancock who reaped the rewards of the pressure, as her reintroduction found Georgia Adams splicing to mid-off.Throughout the spells of profligacy and struggle, Elwiss had kept the scoreboard ticking along and was compensated with a 43-ball half-century – her first in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.With a platform of 105 for 2 and wickets in the shed, Elwiss and Kemp went ballistic to get Vipers above par – with 66 runs coming from the last five overs.Kemp scored all but two of her runs either on the leg side or straight, as she prioritised power – summed up by hitting all three sixes of the innings – to strike her second Vipers fifty, and first in T20s. She ended up with 55 off 35 balls, placing a full stop with a last-ball maximum, while the experienced Elwiss returned with a 57-ball 73, having gone at a run-a-ball for much of the innings.Their 110 beat Danni Wyatt and Maia Bouchier’s 108 in last year’s Eliminator as Vipers’ best alliance and slots in as the CEC’s all-time seventh-highest.In reply, it took just two balls for Freya Davies to breakthrough as Knott stuck out her right hand to catch high above her head at cover to dismiss Amara Carr. Griffith was bowled through the gate by Linsey Smith in the following over, but Gardner and Villiers countered against Adams and Smith to reach 46 for 2 by the end of the powerplay.Gardner play the role of anchor – albeit with a life on 25 – which allowed Villiers to free her arms, stride past her previous CEC best of 36 but fall six short of fifty as she was stumped off Knott. It ended a 75-run stand and swung the momentum to the visitors and while Gardner reached her first CEC fifty, in 47 deliveries, the run-rate was always slightly out of reach.Lissy Macleod and Hancock holed out in successive Mary Taylor balls before Davies and Adams saw out the last two overs, despite some late Gardner power-hitting after the game had gone.
