Hardened Australia fighting fit for future challenges

Tim Paine believes his attack his still getting better despite two convincing victories

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide02-Dec-2019With these words to the host broadcaster, Australia’s coach Justin Langer referred to the fact that after battling India at home and England away in the past 12 months, he and Tim Paine are leading a hardened Test match team. Judging by their ejection of Pakistan from two Tests each won by an innings, it is only the two aforementioned teams that are currently capable of containing them, and of those perhaps only India on home soil. The final day in Adelaide unfolded with the air of inevitability that once enveloped so many Australian home Tests during their previous era of dominance between 1995 and 2008. Pakistan have been, save for a few sparkling moments in time, thoroughly outplayed and taught lessons in Test match craft that will serve some well, while being the breaking of others.Australia meanwhile have enjoyed headlining performances from David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc, while Nathan Lyon joined the party on the final day with his first ever five-for against Pakistan. For Paine, who nursed a stung finger through the final innings of the Test, this was the performance of a team that has grown enormously over the past 18 months, and has now recalibrated to focus upon future challenges against India at home, South Africa away and then the carrot of the world Test Championship final in mid-2021. New Zealand, ranked No. 2 in the world and disciplined to a fault, will provide a more systematic test than Pakistan have provided.”Particularly this game I thought that it was quite a professional performance, barring some catches and my stumping yesterday, I thought we were always creating chances,” Paine said. “I thought our energy and attitude in the field was really good and we kept at them, we knew that it was going to be hard toil for us during the day time, the wicket was pretty flat and the ball doesn’t give you a hell of a lot through the air.Australia celebrate taking the final wicket•AFP”But I thought the way our bowlers backed up, kept on coming, it was also really windy out there so difficult for the bowlers to bowl at one end. But I thought it was a really professional, clinical performance barring some fielding slips.”Paine was, partly due to Lyon and partly due to the rest that had already been banked for the bowlers due to Warner, Labuschagne and also Joe Burns in Brisbane, able to enforce the follow-on and thus take advantage of the vagaries of a pink-ball Test. He was rewarded not only by some more fiery spells from his pacemen but also Lyon’s best performance against Pakistan, as he steadily worked his way through the visitors in the fashion of the wisened spin bowling pro he has become.”I think he bowled really well in the first innings as well. We just let him down. Missed some chances off him,” Paine said. “But I think Lyno today turned up and did exactly what we wanted him to do particularly in the second innings and win us Test matches. And again, I don’t think people understand how difficult it can be with that pink ball, particularly during the day, and for Lyno to still be getting spin and bounce and challenging batsmen at all times and creating chances for our team is an unbelievable effort and why he’s such a great bowler.”We’re lucky not only because of how good [the quick bowlers] are but they’re great athletes as well. We knew they had that in them to be able to go again. Starcy has a bit of a cut on his big toe, he did land awkwardly at one stage yesterday but that was fine. Most of his grimacing today…I think he’s waiting the nail to come off the big toe which happens to a lot of fast bowlers and until it actually happens it can be quite painful. He’s battling a little bit with that but nothing he hasn’t gone through before.”This wear and tear will get the chance to heal over the next week before the team reconfigures in Perth for New Zealand, who have shown against England and by their consistent displays over recent years that they will likely make best use of every element of their game, where Pakistan – through inexperience and mental lapses – were unable to. Paine sees the series as another chance to further hone the skills seen in Adelaide, on three surfaces in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney that should provide some measure of contrasts.Nathan Lyon holds the ball up after his five-wicket haul•AFP”I think we’re getting better at it. I think in the second innings at the Gabba we had a big lead so we sort of tried to get a few wickets which is probably slightly different to the game plan we’ll stick with most of the time,” Paine said. “Again, that’s a product of playing really good cricket for the other four days is that we were so far ahead of that game that we could try that.”I think we’ve got a very skilful attack. We’ve got an attack with good pace, we’ve got a great spinner but at the same time when you have players that good bowling, just giving you nothing and building pressure, at some stage you’re going to break teams open. At the moment, we’re finding ways to hold the scoreboard for long periods of time and when we take wickets we tend to take them quickly because of the quality bowling we’ve got.”They’ve been awesome for a while now. I thought they were really good at the Ashes as well. I think our attack, as good as they are, is still getting better.”A contrast in teams was offered not only by Pakistan as the Adelaide Test drew to a close but also by South Australia, a team in a far deeper hole. Having threatened to complete a tough fourth innings chase against Western Australia, they subsided to lose when Adam Zampa hooked with eight balls remaining. As Langer and Paine undoubtedly know, the current “heavyweight” pitch of the Australian team’s performance can so easily slip away.

IPL 2020 auction: Six players who could spark a fierce bidding war

A versatile keeper-batsman and a somewhat forgotten allrounder are among those who could be in for a big payday

Gaurav Sundararaman17-Dec-2019The IPL 2020 mini auction will have a maximum of 73 spots up for grabs. Historically, small auctions have favoured players, big and unknown, making them millionaires in a matter of minutes owing to the high demand. Pawan Negi (2016), Varun Chakravarthy (2019), Ben Stokes (2017), Tymal Mills (2017) and Ravindra Jadeja (2012) are good examples of that trend in the past. In this auction, the focus will most likely be on overseas fast bowlers, allrounders and Indian middle-order batsmen. Here are some of the players ESPNcricinfo predicts could attract a fierce bidding war.Podcast: Take all our money, Pat Cummins

Another IPL auction, another million-dollar bid for Unadkat? Which young Indian players should you watch out for? And where did that 48-year old veteran come from? The Stump Mic Crew look ahead to the IPL auction. Click here to listen.

Glenn MaxwellThe last time the Australia allrounder was part of small auction – in 2013 – Mumbai Indians bought him for USD 1 million. He’s not lived up to his name in the tournament, with just 1397 runs at 22.90 in 69 matches, but current form is what franchises pay attention to.Maxwell, who has returned after taking a break due to mental-health reasons, might go for big bucks this time too. Since the beginning of this year, he has 635 runs in 22 innings at an average of 33.42 in ODIs and scores of 56, 113* and 62 in the three T20Is he’s batted in.Apart from Mumbai, Maxwell has also been part of Delhi Capitals (as well as Daredevils) and Kings XI Punjab. While one of his original owners might want him back, three other franchises – Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore (all three have new head coaches) – are also likely to contest hard for Maxwell.Who would fancy him: While the Knight Riders could think of playing Maxwell as an opener, Royal Challengers and Sunrisers could utilise him as the designated finisher as both teams have been heavily reliant on their top three.ALSO READ: IPL 2020 auction: How the squads stand and what they needPat CumminsThe demand for overseas quicks in this auction, as various franchise officials predict, is going to very high. Barring Knight Riders and Mumbai, the other six franchises are looking for an experienced overseas quick or death bowler. With Mitchell Starc opting out of the auction, Cummins, the No.1 Test bowler, is primed to be in high demand. In addition to extreme pace, Cummins offers control, has variations, and can bowl in any phase. In the 2017 IPL, he was the leading wicket-taker for the Daredevils (now Capitals) with 15 wickets. Overall, Cummins’ T20 economy rate is 7.72 while his IPL economy rate is 8.29. Cummins has already scored a point over his rivals by listing as an allrounder, which is the second set of players in the auctions order that will come up on Thursday.Who would fancy him: Expect Kings XI and Royal Challengers to keenly contest for the Australian quick.Sheldon Cottrell brings out the salute•BCCISheldon Cottrell Cottrell has already earned a lot of fans with his signature salutesend-off. Both at the World Cup this summer, and in the ongoing limited-overs series in India, Cottrell has proved he has the pace, variations and attitude to put pressure on the top order. The West Indies left-arm fast bowler has an economy rate of 7.46 over 83 T20 matches. What could help the Jamaican is the fact that there are not too many noteworthy names who ply his trade – left-arm pace – in the auction. In the 2017 auction, Tymal Mills came into a similar situation and picked up INR 12 crores from Royal Challengers, although he did not deliver as expected.Who would fancy him: Barring Mumbai and the Knight Riders, the rest of the teams need a left-arm fast bowler so expect several teams to line up for Cottrell.Alex CareyThe Australia wicketkeeper would be a valuable buy for any team. How many players can open the innings or play as a finisher, and play spin very well and keep wickets? Carey ticks all those boxes. He impressed during the ODI series in India in 2018 and then excelled at the World Cup. Carey’s flexible role makes him a hugely attractive option because he provides balance, which franchises are always after. And if he proves a success, then he becomes an automatic bet for retention ahead of the 2021 mega auction. Carey also comes in during the first hour of the auction so expect more than one team to aggressively bid for him.Who would fancy him: Royal Challengers, Rajasthan Royals and the Capitals will be the frontrunners.Chris Morris is elated after a wicket•BCCIChris MorrisMorris was the first player to be retained ahead of the 2018 auction by the Delhi franchise but was released ahead of the auction this year. Injury concerns and his dwindling contributions with the bat did not help the South African’s cause. However, Morris’ strengths are his death-bowling skills and the ability to take wickets regularly. Morris has been in good form in T20s in 2019, taking 44 wickets at 24.86 and an economy rate of 8.42 in 36 games.Who would fancy him: Super Kings are known to value experience and familiarity. Don’t be surprised if they take back Morris, who played for them in 2013.Jaydev UnadkatUnadkat was the most expensive Indian player in the last two auctions. Will luck favour him again? Familiarity with Indian conditions is an automatic card in his favour. Plus he is a left-arm fast bowler, who has useful variations on slower pitches. If a couple of teams are looking for someone with those characteristics, then the Saurashtra captain can expect another big payday.Who would fancy him: Pitches in Delhi and Chennai are on the slower side and the franchises based out of these cities need a left-arm pacer in their squad.

Liverpool watch four targets as £50m star scores in front of Reds chiefs

Liverpool are cruising to the Premier League title under Arne Slot and have now sent scouts to watch a clutch of potential summer targets, per reports.

Liverpool's summer activity begins to gain traction

The Reds have managed to put themselves in pole position to claim the Premier League, but what comes next after celebrating their second top-flight triumph of the modern era?

Slot appears on the surface as a man who won’t be keen for any complacency to creep in, though he has serious work to do regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s contract situations.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Taking internal matters to one side, Liverpool have Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman on their radar as experience on the flanks becomes a priority to bolster depth across the Reds’ front four positions.

Vasco Da Gama star Rayan Vitor could also be en route to Anfield. Nevertheless, his prospective arrival is likely to be categorised as a long-term commitment while he develops at his own pace.

Darwin Nunez could make way for a new centre-forward amid his frustrating campaign through the middle. Diogo Jota and Luiz Diaz have been ahead of the Uruguayan in the pecking order at times, which hasn’t exactly helped his case in trying to win over Slot.

Exploring options to add extra firepower will stand Liverpool in good stead for next season. Salah’s uncertain situation may create a need for someone to fill his goalscoring boots, so it is only fair the champions in waiting do their due diligence on potential targets.

Now, Liverpool have reportedly set their sights on a quartet that could be on their way to Anfield after the Merseyside giants carried out a scouting mission.

Liverpool watch four Premier League stars, one scores under their nose

According to The Boot Room, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Liam Delap score for Ipswich Town against Wolverhampton Wanderers as the England Under-21 international netted under their nose in a 2-1 defeat for the Tractor Boys.

Intriguingly, the visiting side had Joao Gomes, Andre and Rayan Ait-Nouri under observation from the Reds. The latter doesn’t have a release clause in his contract at Molineux despite previous suggestions to the contrary.

Rated at £50 million in some quarters, Ipswich striker Delap has become a standout in the top-flight after putting forward a return of 12 goals and two assists in 30 appearances.

Ait-Nouri is a target who Liverpool have had eyes on for a while, and Andre has been scouted previously as the club weigh up midfield additions to elevate their exciting talent portfolio.

Heading into the window, it is interesting to see where Liverpool feel they can find value for money on the market. The Premier League is a difficult industry to get plates spinning in, though the fact they will head into 2025/26 as reigning champions bodes well for business.

Nottingham Forest in contact to sign new £30m+ striker compared to Marmoush

Nottingham Forest have reportedly made an approach to sign a new £30m+ striker who has been compared to Man City star Omar Marmoush.

Nottingham Forest take one step closer to Champions League football

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side took another step closer to qualifying for the Champions League on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Manchester United at the City Ground.

Former Red Devils winger Anthony Elanga scored the winning goal to take Forest to an incredible 57 points in the Premier League with eight games remaining.

Centre-back Murillo was also the hero in the final stage with a goal-line clearance to deny Harry Maguire. Talking after the win, Nuno said: “Over the moon. We are delighted, realising how the game went. We could not be more proud than we are, because it was very tough.

“The fans played their part. We were against the ropes. In this moment, we were against the ropes, and it was about heart and belief because the legs weren’t there anymore.”

He’s a man in-demand…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 2, 2025

With European football on the cards in 2025/26 for Forest, attention is already turning to the transfer market and a new signing in attack is on the to-do list.

Evangelos Marinakis is ready to break the bank and spend big, with the likes of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, Wolves star Matheus Cunha and Brentford forward Yoane Wissa three forwards linked with moves to Forest. Now, another name has emerged on the radar from the Bundesliga.

Nottingham Forest make contact to sign Mohamed Amoura

According to reports in France, relayed by Sport Witness, Nottingham Forest have been in contact over a move to sign Mohamed Amoura who is under contract at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

It isn’t said whether or not Forest have made an approach to Amoura’s camp or the club, however, Arsenal and Liverpool have also been in touch as all three eye a deal.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan at VfL Wolfsburg, who have the option to make a move permanent for around €14m plus €4m bonuses in the summer. They look likely to do that and could then sell the Algeria international for up to €40m (£33.3m) to make a quick profit.

Amoura has been impressing in Germany for Wolfsburg, netting 10 goals and providing eight assists from 24 Bundesliga games in 2024/25, and by the looks of things, he could be seen as a real rival to Chris Wood at the City Ground.

Amoura, dubbed a player with “exceptional” pace, has been likened to City star Marmoush and other high-quality forwards, so a move to Forest could be one to keep an eye on.

Rodgers could revive Kuhn by playing him in a brand new role at Celtic

Celtic are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with six matches left to play before the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Brendan Rodgers’s side are on course to win the top-flight title for the fourth successive year, since the old enemy won it in the 2020/21 season, but it has not been a perfect season by any stretch at Parkhead.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

The Hoops have already lost more games (four) than they did in the entirety of the 2023/24 Premiership term, with their most recent defeat coming against St. Johnstone last weekend.

Celtic have lost two of their last three matches, having lost 3-2 to Rangers before the international break, and that is something Rodgers will be concerned about heading into the summer.

The Hoops boss will not want it to become a habit heading into next season and, so, will be looking at what has gone wrong in recent games to make adjustments and improve the team.

What went wrong in Celtic's loss to St. Johnstone

There were several reasons why the Premiership leaders ended up on the wrong side of a result against the team rooted to the bottom of the table last weekend.

One of them was that Auston Trusty, who came in to replace Maik Nawrocki, gave away a cheap free-kick that presented the home side with a chance to put pressure on the goal, resulting in a header that made it 1-0.

That gave the Saints something to hold on to and they did exactly that for the rest of the match as they sat deep and defended the box for their lives, needing their goalkeeper to make nine saves in total.

Celtic were unable to break them down to get the equaliser, and a subsequent winner, because they did not offer enough quality in the final third, due to their top performers failing to step up.

As you can see in the table above, the front three that Rodgers selected to the start did not do enough at the top end of the pitch, with zero ‘big chances’ created combined.

Nicolas Kuhn, in particular, struggled as the German forward delivered zero shots on target, one key pass, and lost 70% of his duels in the first half before being withdrawn from the action at the break.

It has been a frustrating time for the 25-year-old attacker, whose form has dipped from his early season heroics, and Rodgers may be thinking of ways to get the left-footed whiz back to his best.

Nicolas Kuhn's recent struggles for Celtic

After the defeat to St. Johnstone, Kuhn has now been substituted at half-time in two of the last three matches, having also been hooked at the break in the loss to Rangers.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The German winger has only scored one goal in his last ten appearances in the Premiership and has been substituted by the 72nd minute in all five of his most recent starts in the division, which suggests that Rodgers has not been overly pleased with what the forward has produced on the pitch.

Kuhn had scored nine goals in his first 17 outings in the Scottish top-flight, which shows that there has been a clear drop-off in his output in the final third from the right wing.

The former Bayern Munich and Ajax youngster was the star of the show for the Hoops in the first half of the season, as evidenced by his exceptional goal return, but he now needs to find a way to reignite that flame.

Whilst there are things Kuhn could do to get back to his best, like delivering more quality in his actions at the top end of the pitch from the right flank, there is also something that Rodgers could do to put the forward on the right track.

Why Celtic must play Nicolas Kuhn in a new role

36 of the 25-year-old star’s 37 starts in all competitions this season have been on the right flank and the Hoops manager could brilliantly revive the winger’s form by unleashing him in a brand new role for the club.

The ex-Rapid Vienna star has never played in a central position for Celtic but he has played as a centre-forward at previous clubs, scoring an eye-catching 29 goals in 43 matches in his career in that role.

Kuhn is currently struggling for goals, making little impact at the top end of the pitch, and a spell in the team as a striker could help him to rebuild his confidence, before going back out to the wing.

With the league all-but-secured – 13 points clear with six games to go – Rodgers can afford to experiment and try new things with the team, which is why unleashing the German in a brand new role could be worth trying.

As you can see in the table above, the Celtic star has outperformed his xG in both the Premiership and the Champions League this season, which speaks to his ability to efficiently finish chances that come his way.

This suggests that the potential may be there for him to be an effective centre-forward with the team creating chances for him in central positions, rather than him needing to create openings for himself by coming in off the right flank.

The Celtic star, as shown in the clip above, is capable of providing exceptional finishes and Rodgers must, now, offer him the chance to showcase his finishing quality as a centre-forward in one of the team’s upcoming matches, in an attempt to help him get back to his goalscoring best for the Scottish giants.

Rodgers must finally get rid of Celtic dud who earns more than Maeda

Celtic must move on from the forward who earns even more than Daizen Maeda.

Everton battling Real Madrid to sign £15m ace who's outscored Calvert-Lewin

Everton are eyeing a move for a £15m-rated player who is also wanted by Real Madrid this summer, according to a fresh transfer update regarding their upcoming transfer business.

Everton eyeing summer signings

The Blues continue to be linked with new signings ahead of next season, with Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin emerging as an option to provide competition for Vitaliy Mykolenko moving forward. He is also out of contract at Goodison Park next summer, too, so the Black Cats player could be viewed as a long-term successor.

Meanwhile, Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis has also been linked with a move to Everton, following an impressive season for the Portuguese giants that has seen him score 24 goals in all competitions. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin potentially leaving, a new centre forward is a must for David Moyes.

In terms of possible shock signings, Liverpool winger Ben Doak has been mentioned as an option for the Blues, with his future at Anfield still unsure because of the options in front of him in attacking areas.

The teenage Scot has spent this season on loan at Middlesbrough, scoring three goals and registering seven assists in the Championship, but there is no guarantee that the Reds see a future for him at the club. He could be a hugely exciting addition for Everton, but it is hard to see it happening.

Everton keen on signing "incredible" £15m ace

According to a new report from The Sunday Mirror [via Goodison News], Everton are among the clubs interested in signing Sevilla ace Juanlu Sanchez this summer.

The 21-year-old is valued at £15m by his current club, with the Blues joined by Madrid, Brighton and Newcastle United in the race to snap him up before the beginning of next season. A £15m move could be seen as cheap, as Sanchez has a reported £34.3m release clause in his contract.

Juanlu could be a strong signing for Everton, not least because of the versatility that he possesses, being able to flourish at right-back, central midfield, attacking midfield and even as a second striker if needed.

This season, the youngster has outscored Calvert-Lewin in the league, netting four times in La Liga compared to the Blues striker’s tally of three, and he has been described as “incredible” by former Sevilla manager Garcia Pimienta, who has said of him:

“He has played as an inside midfielder [before], we were short on space in midfield due to Saul’s [Niguez] suspension and [Albert Sambi] Lokonga’s injury. I spoke to him, I knew he could do well in that position. Juanlu has an incredible present and a better future.”

Millwall and Blackburn looking to sign "warrior" Championship defender

The battle at both ends of the Championship is going down to the wire this season, but there may also be a transfer tussle involving three clubs currently fighting it out in England’s second-tier.

Championship run-in heats up as Blackburn thrash Millwall

Only three matches now remain for most teams in the Championship and there is a high level of jeapordy surrounding both the race for promotion and the battle to avoid the drop. Leeds United and Burnley look likely to enter the Premier League automatically, but there is an intriguing battle for the playoff slots.

Millwall'sJaphetTangangain action with Portsmouth's Isaac Hayden

Emerging as a surprise late contender, Millwall have put together a decent run of results under Alex Neil and still have a shot at entering the picture for top-flight football, but those hopes were damaged badly by a 4-1 defeat at Ewood Park on Friday.

Neil is a specialist in this type of environment, as exemplified at Sunderland and Norwich City in previous years, though there is an acknowledgement that the Lions will now need to be flawless to stand any real chance.

Looking ahead to the summer, Millwall could strengthen their defence by signing Charlton Athletic’s Thierry Small on a free transfer once his contract at the Valley comes to an end.

Preston North End are also in hot pursuit of the versatile star, signifying that a number of transfer battles could be about to take place between Championship clubs looking to beef up their pool of talent.

Continuing this theme, Millwall could now face competition from Friday’s victors Blackburn to sign a star who is actually on the books of one of their London rivals, per recent developments.

Millwall and Blackburn fight to sign Morgan Fox from QPR

According to EFL Analysis, Millwall and Blackburn both want to sign Morgan Fox from Queens Park Rangers as the veteran edges closer to leaving his current employers on a free transfer.

Out of contract this summer, the versatile 31-year-old has been offered extended terms at Loftus Road, but it remains to be seen if he signs on amid further interest from Hull City.

He has previously been labelled a “warrior” by Gareth Ainsworth, giving an insight into his valiant skillbase. With the end of this term on the horizon, you get the impression Fox will take his time before making a decision on where to commit his future.

Millwall earning promotion could be a decisive factor in potential negotiations, and for now, the quartet of clubs involved will focus on their respective duties until the off-season arrives, which could pave the way for plenty of movement in either direction regarding key assets.

Man Utd ready to move for "lightning" quick striker on huge £8.6m salary

Manchester United are preparing to beat Arsenal to the signing of a “lightning” quick striker who has 19 direct goal contributions this season, according to a new report.

Hojlund now a "damaged player" amid new striker links

United’s already dismal season sank even lower with a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Sunday. The loss, sealed by a superb Pablo Sarabia free-kick in the 77th minute, leaves United level on points with Wolves – a team that, until February, had been battling relegation, with Wolves’ resurgence only underscoring United’s ongoing stagnation.

It was a disappointing display from Ruben Amorim’s side overall, but one player who particularly struggled was Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker failed to score once again, leaving him with just three goals in 28 Premier League appearances. Against Wolves, he managed only 13 touches, completed a single dribble, and lost eight duels.

Speaking after the game, Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals, described Hojlund as a “damaged player”.

Manchester United ready to move for Vlahovic

There’s no doubting that United need to upgrade on Hojlund this summer, and according to a new report from TuttoJuve, they already have a target in mind. The Italian outlet claims United are “ready to move” for Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović, who has registered 14 goals and five assists across all competitions this season.

United are reportedly considering a €45 million (£38 million) bid for the Serbian international, a long-standing target for Arsenal. However, Vlahović is said to be seeking an annual salary of €10 million (£8.6 million) to join Old Trafford—a wage that would place him among the club’s top earners.

Vlahović joined Juventus from Fiorentina in 2022 and has since scored 55 goals in 139 appearances for the Old Lady. His strike rate mirrors the form he showed at Fiorentina, where he netted 49 times in 108 games.

Speaking about Vlahović back in 2021, former Fiorentina player and pundit Micah Richards was full of praise.

“I have watched him a couple of times now,” Richards told BBC Radio Five Live, per The Independent. “He is lightning. It’s ridiculous. He has got 16 in 18 this season. His left foot is like a wand. I am telling you now, he is everything, he is everything you need.”

Offer ready: Arsenal keen to bid £30m for "special" Premier League forward

Arsenal are now readying a £30m bid for an attacking midfielder, who plays for one of their Premier League rivals, and there is a feeling it could be accepted, according to a report.

Gunners looking to strengthen in attack

As we edge closer to the end of the Premier League season, it is becoming more apparent the Gunners need to bring in reinforcements in attacking areas this summer, with Mikel Arteta once again having to make do without a striker yesterday afternoon.

Arteta’s side dropped another two points in the Premier League title race at Goodison Park, although Leandro Trossard did manage to get on the scoresheet in the 1-1 draw against Everton, which left them 11 points behind Liverpool.

A new striker is of particular interest to Arteta, and three centre-forwards continue to be linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium, namely Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko.

However, with Bukayo Saka’s absence exposing the lack of depth in the squad earlier this season, a winger could also be brought in by new sporting director Andrea Berta, with Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams now thought to be interested in making the move to north London.

According to a report from Spain, Arsenal and Berta may want to bring in another attacking midfielder and are readying a €35m (£30m) bid for Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss.

El Khannouss could be set to leave Leicester at the end of the season, with his side now looking very likely to be relegated from the Premier League, and the Gunners have seemingly offered him an escape route.

The north Londoners believe the Moroccan has great potential, and there is a feeling Leicester could be willing to cash in, given their difficult financial situation amid impending relegation to the Championship.

"Special" El Khannouss needs to leave this summer

It hasn’t been the best of debut campaigns in the Premier League for the 20-year-old, having picked up just two goals and one assist, however, it was always going to be a tall order to stand out in such a poor side.

With the Foxes set to be relegated, the Belgian-born starlet needs to move on this summer, and there are indications he could be a solid signing for Arsenal, having been lauded as a “special” player by some members of the media.

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson also speaks very highly of the attacking midfielder, which suggests his attacking numbers could increase dramatically if he played in a better side.

A new striker should be Arsenal’s priority for the summer, but it is promising news that El Khannouss is also being targeted, given the lack of depth in attacking areas.

A better signing than Gittens: Chelsea enter race to land £150m winger

Chelsea have seen a huge improvement defensively in recent weeks, keeping five clean sheets in their last seven games, only conceding two goals and 16 shots on target across those seven games.

However, the attacking prowess does seem to have tailed off, with the Blues only scoring nine in their last seven games, with four of those goals coming against bottom of the Premier League, Southampton.

Enzo Maresca will be keen to add some extra firepower to his forward line this summer, with a new striker high on the wish list, alongside a new winger who suits the Italian’s system.

Chelsea battling for £64m "cheat code"

The Blues have been linked with a number of forwards over recent months, from Newcastle superstar Alexander Isak to Ipswich forward Liam Delap.

However, they’re not just casting their net across the Premier League but across European football, too.

Indeed, according to reports from TBR Football, Chelsea are interested in signing AC Milan’s £150m-rated winger, Rafael Leao. The player’s camp are currently assessing the player’s options ahead of the summer.

That being said, the Blues could face competition from London rivals Arsenal, who are also now emerging as an option for the Portuguese winger.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal are keen to add a right-footed left-winger who offers a direct goal threat, speed in transition and creative qualities to unlock a game through their individual brilliance.

Leao has made 43 appearances for the Italian outfit this season, scoring ten goals, providing nine assists and totaling 2,997 minutes.

Chelsea are also reportedly in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens, so just how do the pair compare?

How Leao compares to Gittens this season

Dortmund’s Gittens is another target emerging for Maresca’s side and it’s easy to see why.

The 20-year-old sensation – who is seen as the future of English football – has made 42 appearances for the German outfit this season, netting 12 goals and providing four assists.

He notably shone in the Champions League, scoring against Real Madrid, and would be a superb signing. Still, he’s not quite as good as Leao.

Both players fit the bill of a Maresca winger, looking to get into plenty of 1v1 isolations with the opposition fullback, capable of going both inside and outside and having the directness to drive towards the box themselves.

One factor that could be slightly more worrying surrounding Leao compared to Gittens is work rate, with Maresca often asking his wide players to work hard defensively.

Whilst Gittens has a slightly higher shot volume, manages more progressive carries and successful take-ons, Leao offers more through creative passing, with more key passes, more shot-creating actions and higher assist numbers.

Described as one of football’s “cheat codes” by analyst Raj Chohan, Milan’s Portuguese star has blistering pace, the persistence to be direct and attack the opposition full-backs. He always forces them into uncomfortable scenarios and has the ability to create something out of nothing in a split second.

AC Milan's RafaelLeao

Both players would be excellent signings for Chelsea, but with the Blues already having such a young and inexperienced side, an addition like Leao could provide more of an instant boost, with a big-name signing to raise morale and ready to play a significant part in a title challenge.
