Warrican bags five as West Indies win in Pakistan after 34 years

Warrican finished with a match haul of 9 for 70 as West Indies levelled the series with a 120-run win

Danyal Rasool27-Jan-2025Jomel Warrican and the rest of West Indies’ spin cast hoisted Pakistan with their own petard, spinning a web around Pakistan’s batters to skittle them out for 133, securing a first win on Pakistan soil since 1990. It took West Indies little over an hour on day three to slice through Pakistan’s last six wickets, a 39-run partnership between Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha the only one that put up any resistance as West Indies secured a 120-run win that levelled the series. The signs were immediately ominous for Pakistan when, three balls into the day, Saud Shakeel was drawn into playing at one from Kevin Sinclair that ripped away, taking the outside edge to first slip. Nightwatcher Kashif Ali was dispatched the following over, Warrican forcing the ball through his pads as West Indies began to smell blood.Rizwan and Agha kept the bowlers at bay for a while, hunkering down and trying to ride out this West Indies wave. With Kemar Roach injured, West Indies continued chipping away with their trio of spinners. Rizwan put away the odd delivery when they missed their lines, but this was becoming increasingly rare and Pakistan continued to feel asphyxiated. For 12 overs, the seventh-wicket pair held out, but Warrican got one to keep low as Agha defended. It rapped him on the back pad adjacent to the stumps, and the visitors had the breakthrough that exposed the tail.Soon after, it was Warrican again who dispensed with Rizwan, who played all around a delivery that carried on with the arm and went through the bat-pad gap to make a mess of his stumps. By now, only the formalities remained.Noman Ali fell to Gudakesh Motie, but, fittingly it was Warrican who had the last laugh. Sajid Khan dragged one onto his stumps to seal another five-wicket haul that took Warrican’s series tally to 19. As West Indies squealed with delight, Warrican looked Sajid square in the eye and performed his now famous thigh-thumping celebration. It was an apt metaphor for West Indies giving Pakistan a taste of their own medicine.

'Unreal' – Cummins 'immensely proud' to have regained elusive Border-Gavaskar Trophy

“What we’ve been able to achieve together alongside the support staff as well, it’s such a group effort”

Australia captain Pat Cummins says he’s immensely proud to claim a trophy that “a few” of his team-mates didn’t have after Australia closed out the Border-Gavaskar series with a six-wicket win in Sydney.”Unreal. This was one that a few of us didn’t have,” Cummins said at the post-series presentation. “It’s been an amazing series. [We’re] immensely proud. We’ve spent a lot of time together as a group over the years, so we knew we weren’t at our best at Perth, but it was never as bad as it seems. So you stick tight and double down on what makes us a really good side.”Scott Boland took 6 for 45 in India’s second innings, and finished with 10 for the Test in a Player-of-the-match display, to set up a chase of 162. The chase had some nervy moments when Australia slumped to 58 for 3 but key contributions from Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Beau Webster guided the hosts home.Related

Konstas, Webster and Boland, the unusual suspects in Australia's moment of glory

Webster hit the winning runs to cap a sparkling debut, making 57 and 39 not out, taking two catches and the wicket of Shubman Gill. The win means Australia reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2014-15. Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon are the only members of Australia’s XI in Sydney who played in that series, while Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood also played in both series. The win means Australia’s men hold every bilateral Test trophy they play for, plus the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup. The victory also secured Australia’s place in the WTC final where they get to defend their crown against South Africa at Lord’s in June. Cummins, who has never beaten India in a Test series, was ecstatic to finally get over the hurdle.”It’s been such a special group,” Cummins said. “Feel so privileged to first of all have this job. But what we’ve been able to achieve together alongside the support staff as well, it’s such a group effort, families as well. They give up so much. So yeah, really proud with what we’ve been able to achieve.”Cummins was thrilled with the contributions of debutants in the series including Webster, Sam Konstas and Nathan McSweeney.”We always talk about needing a squad, especially in these five Test match series you’re rarely going to play the same XI and three debutants across series all came in, fitted in really well, and contributed at different times,” Cummins said.”Beau in his debut match this game as well, I thought was fantastic. So yeah, it feels like we’re building something nice.”Cummins was also pleased with his own contributions. He claimed 25 wickets at 21.36 for the series and also contributed 159 runs at 19.87, including match-winning scores of 49 and 41 in Melbourne where he was Player of the Match.”Pretty happy with how I played throughout the series,” Cummins said. “I thought our planning and prep coming in was really good. I was lucky I had a bit of a freshen up leading to the series, and I think that really helped me and a couple of other guys. These are the big series that you try and peak for.”

Man Utd earn record revenue despite worst season in 51 years as Red Devils claim to be best-performing club in Europe in key measure

Manchester United have posted their highest ever amount of revenue for last season, despite having their worst campaign on the pitch in 51 years. On Wednesday, the Red Devils published their latest financial results, which they said show 'the enduring strength and resilience of the club' as well as the benefits of 'difficult decisions taken', namely making an extra 200 staff members redundant.

  • United boast record revenue

The Red Devils amassed total revenue of £666.5 million ($909m) for the year ended 30 June 2025. It was only a small increase (£4.7m or 0.7 percent) from the previous year, but it was enough to break the previous record. The biggest increase (by 10%) was in commercial revenue, as a result of the club's front-of-shirt sponsorship with Snapdragon, the most valuable deal of its kind in world sport, and the launch of its new ecommerce model with SCAYL.

  • Salary cuts lead to £51.5m saving

United saved £51.5m thanks to reduced operational costs and a 14.1% fall in employee expenses. That was partly driven by the club making employees redundant, referred to as 'wider club restructuring' although the main factor was the 25% reduction in player wages as a result of the failure to qualify for the Champions League for the last two seasons.

    Top performing club in Europe

United are hailing one measure in particular, EBITDA of £182.8m. The acronym stands for earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation and is described as the best reflection of underlying business performance. It is the highest level of any club in European football since the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Omar Berrada praises United's financial resilience

United's chief executive Omar Berrada said the results, which came despite finishing 15th in the Premier League and failing to qualify for any European competition, reflected United's strength as an institution. "To have generated record revenues during such a challenging year for the club demonstrates the resilience which is a hallmark of Manchester United," he said. "As we settle into the 2025-26 season, we are working hard to improve the club in all areas."

Tottenham make club record bid to hijack Liverpool for their very own version of Wirtz

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly submitted a blockbuster £80m+ offer to sign a new left winger after saying an emotional goodbye to Son Heung-min.

Son plays final Tottenham game

Having revealed the news that he wants to leave Spurs this summer and bring an end to an iconic 13-year run last week, Son has now played his final game for the North London club. Bidding his farewell, the winger bowed out in the Lilywhites’ friendly draw against Premier League rivals Newcastle United in his home country, South Korea.

Next up for the 33-year-old seems to be MLS side LAFC, who have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Son and with Spurs over a summer switch.

As for Spurs, their next task is to replace a player that some may deem irreplaceable. Already this summer, they’ve welcomed Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich, Mathys Tel in a permanent deal and Mohammed Kudus.

Now, however, they could be about to pull off their most impressive signing yet amid reports that Daniel Levy and co. have submitted a stunning opening offer.

Tottenham submit Rodrygo offer

According to Spanish media outlets, Tottenham have now submitted an opening offer to sign Rodrygo worth as much as €100m (£87m) this summer. The Real Madrid winger has been the subject of interest from both Arsenal and Liverpool in recent months, and even agreed personal terms with the Reds recently, but with their focus elsewhere, the Lilywhites are reportedly attempting to steal the headlines with a shock move.

Interestingly, Rodrygo’s statistical profile matches up with another Liverpool signing – Florian Wirtz. Both players rank highly against their positional peers for non-penalty goals, shot-creating actions and succesful take-ons, as per FBRef.

Replacing Son is no easy task for all involved in North London, but Rodrygo is arguably the best candidate to do exactly that and more. The Brazilian is a serial winner who has played a pivotal part in Real Madrid’s success in recent years. Now, he could yet become the star of the show under Thomas Frank in what would become Spurs’ record signing by a considerable margin.

Rodrygo in action for Real Madrid.

However, although Real Madrid have given them permission to speak to Rodrygo, convincing the 24-year-old to swap the Spanish giants for North London will reportedly be a tough task for Tottenham chiefs. And overcoming that obstacle is likely to be the turning point to any deal getting over the line this summer.

Dubbed “special” by former Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, Rodrygo continues to be linked with a summer switch to the Premier League, with Spurs the latest of a growing list of clubs to pursue his signature.

Perfect for Saka: Arsenal submit bid to sign "complete" star after Hincapie

Despite the massive influx of spending throughout the summer transfer window, Arsenal star Bukayo Saka still remains as one of the club’s key men in 2025/26.

The academy graduate has worked his way through the youth system, before cementing his place in the first team squad – racking up over 250 appearances for his boyhood side.

However, last season was one tarnished by injury for the 23-year-old, suffering a hamstring injury back in December that would see him miss nearly four months of Premier League action.

The Englishman still managed to end the year on 25 goal contributions in his 37 appearances across all competitions – helping the side reach the Champions League semi-finals.

If the Gunners are to win England’s top-flight under Mikel Arteta’s guidance, he will need to be joined by numerous players at the Emirates – as seen by their attempts in the market as of late.

Arsenal’s hunt for reinforcements to help Saka

Despite £200m being spent this summer, Arsenal have made a move to land Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie over recent days – with Spurs also interested in the defender’s signature.

It’s been claimed that the player himself has already held talks with Arteta over a switch to the Emirates, and potentially been keen on a switch to England – but could cost around £52m to prise him away from the German outfit.

However, he’s not the only player currently in their sights, with Girona right-back Arnau Martinez another star they’re considering, according to one journalist.

He claims that the Gunners have made a €10m (£8.5m) offer to land the Spaniard, who made 40 appearances in 2024/25 – including five in the Champions League.

It’s currently unclear whether the player or his current employers are open to the move, but Arteta’s side appear to be making key moves for the youngster’s signature.

Why Arsenal’s latest target would be perfect for Saka

Whilst the new season is only two games old, winger Saka has already managed to impress for Arsenal – playing a role in the side being top of the table at present.

The England international has already opened his account for the 2025/26 season, scoring in the recent outing against Leeds United – helping Arteta’s men claim a 5-0 victory.

However, his progress may appear to be halted after he limped off in the same game with a hamstring issue – an injury that massively restricted him in the previous campaign.

It’s unclear how long the winger will be sat on the sidelines for, but the manager will be hoping that it will only be fatigue and not another serious issue, given his previous struggles.

Upon his return to action, he could be handed a boost in his attempts for individual and team success – especially if the hierarchy land a deal for current target Martinez.

Whilst the youngster is a full-back by trade, he’s managed to impress in possession over recent months, which could provide Saka with added opportunities in front of goal.

Martinez, who’s been labelled “complete” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, ranked in the 91st percentile for progressive passes (5.6) and the 92nd percentile for passes into the final third (5.3).

Such numbers showcase the talent he possesses with the ball at his feet, subsequently being comfortable in possession – something which is a need in Arteta’s possession-based system.

However, given his defensive role, he also needs to be able to thrive out of possession – but that’s no issue, with Martinez displaying such talent in abundance.

He made 1.8 tackles per 90 in LaLiga last season, along with 1.1 interceptions made per 90, having the tools to add another option to the Gunners’ impressive backline, which has been the best in the division for the last two years.

If a deal can be agreed at the rumoured £8.5m fee, it would be another superb piece of business – especially given his tender age of 22, which could see him improve further in the years ahead.

Such a deal would also benefit Saka massively, offering the youngster another opportunity to build on his impressive figures at the Emirates in the past few campaigns.

Newcastle bid for 14-goal striker "imminent", it "should" meet asking price

Newcastle United are set to make a bid “imminently” for one of their top striker targets, as they look to reinforce the front line before the end of the transfer window next Monday.

Howe: Newcastle "running out of attacking options"

Newcastle’s meeting with Liverpool was always expected to be full of drama, but not a single onwatching fan could have predicted the spectacle that took place at St James’ Park. The Magpies, down to 10 men and 2-0 down, valiantly fought back to level at 2-2 courtesy of William Osula from the bench. The young striker, who is full of potential, sent a timely reminder of his quality.

Eddie Howe found Newcastle's new Isak vs Liverpool and it's not Osula

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 26, 2025

Ultimately, however, it was a night that saw another young player shine as Rio Ngumoha emerged from the bench to become Liverpool’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer in the 99th minute. He was left in dreamland. St James’ Park was left in silence.

Eddie Howe couldn’t hide his disappointment in the result either. Barring the end of the first-half and the start of the second, the Magpies were the side on top. Just like against Aston Villa, however, they lacked a clinical goalscorer to take advantage and Howe admitted that his side are “running out of attacking options”.

Newcastle now have less than a week to solve that attacking problem in a summer that has already seen several targets come and go. That said, one reporter does now expect those at St James’ Park to finally welcome one of their top targets before the deadline.

Newcastle set to make "imminent" new bid for Strand Larsen

Despite reports that their first offer worth £50m was turned down, Jan Åage Fjørtoft now expects Newcastle to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen this week with another bid “imminent”, which “should be enough” to complete a deal.

At this stage of the transfer window, Newcastle have very little time to negotiate small details and simply must go all out to finally welcome a striker.

Strand Larsen’s far from a bad choice, either. Whilst Yoane Wissa has been the name mentioned for most of the summer, the fact that he’s back in Brentford training is not an encouraging sign for Newcastle, who look to be turning to a younger forward with more potential.

Described as “fantastic” by Wolves boss Vitor Pereira last season, Strand Larsen ended the campaign with 14 Premier League goals and could now be on his way to Tyneside as a result.

Martin could ditch Djiga: Rangers close to signing "athletic" £3.4m star

Rangers supporters will be desperate for their side to strengthen before Monday’s deadline, particularly defensively.

On Wednesday night, the Gers were demolished 6-0 in Champions League qualifying, humiliatingly dumped out 9-1 on aggregate, thereby conceding nine plus goals in a two-legged European tie for the first time in 65 years.

This has only cranked up the pressure on manager Russell Martin, despite the fact it was only his tenth match in charge across all competitions.

For now, Martin retains the trust of the Rangers board, if not the Rangers support, so could the addition of a new defender help his cause?

Rangers' defensive issue

Ever since his first game in charge, a 2-0 victory over Panathinaikos in July, Martin’s first-choice centre-back pairing has been John Souttar alongside Nasser Djiga, the duo starting together eight times today to date.

However, the latter, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, is certainly beginning to show signs of weakness.

Djiga was certainly culpable for Club Brugge’s opening goal at Ibrox, with the Burkina Faso international having also been sent off during the dismal 1-1 draw with Dundee earlier this month.

So, as Rangers search for an upgrade, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, they are close to signing centre-back Derek Cornelius from Olympique de Marseille.

It has been reported elsewhere that the deal will be a loan with an option to buy, which transfer insider Sacha Tavolieri believes will be worth €4m (around £3.4m).

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, will Cornelius become the fifth Canadian international to represent Rangers, after Scott Arfield, Fraser Aird, Luca Gasparotto and Colin Miller?

Why Derek Cornelius should excite Rangers supporters

Since making his senior debut for VfB Lübeck in the German fourth-tier, Cornelius has become quite accustomed to changing country.

After spells with VfR Neumünster and then Javor Ivanjica in Serbia, he returned to Canada in January 2019, joining the Vancouver Whitecaps, with his big breakthrough coming during his time in Major League Soccer.

After that, following a loan spell in Greece with Panetolikos, and then 18 months with Swedish side Malmö, he finally earned a big move to Olympique de Marseille, joining les Phocéens for around £4m last summer.

He did make 21 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, 17 of which were starts, but has now been deemed surplus to requirements by Roberto De Zerbi, following the arrival of CJ Egan-Riley, so is on the move again.

Analyst Kai Watson is certainly a fan, labelling the 27-year-old “athletic” while also praising his “excellent” aerial duel-winning ability.

Cornelius will certainly arrive at Ibrox ultra-motivated, ahead of a World Cup on home soil next summer.

Derek Cornelius

He has so far won 35 caps for Canada, starting all five of their matches at the most recent Copa América, as les Rouges upset the odds to reach the semi-finals, so, fitness permitting, he’ll be a starter for Jesse Marsch’s side next summer.

The question though still remains, how does he compare to the man he is set to replace in Rangers’ back-line, Djiga?

An end to multi-club ownership? Law proposed that would ban Chelsea & Man City from controlling clubs in France

Multi-club ownership is under threat in France after a member of parliament presented a cross-party bill that could ban timeshare control of football clubs, potentially affecting Chelsea and Manchester City’s stakes in Ligue 1 teams. Coquerel warns the law is aimed at ensuring “sporting risk” and “equality of opportunity” while punishing non-compliance with heavy fines and competition bans.

The proposal to ban multi-club ownership

Coquerel unveiled a bill aimed at banning such ownership of professional clubs in France, supported by nearly 90 MPs from all parties. The law seeks to prevent a single owner from controlling multiple clubs, extending the powers of France’s financial watchdog (DNCG), to block questionable deals. Non-compliance could lead to fines worth two per cent of global turnover and bans from competitions. Clubs already under multi-ownership would be exempt to protect the current balance of French football.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWhich clubs will be affected by this bill?

The bill could impact 10 Ligue 1 clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon, Monaco, Nice, Strasbourg and Toulouse, as well as seven in Ligue 2. Coquerel cites recent examples, such as Lyon’s near-administrative relegation due to Eagle Football Holdings’ multi-ownership, and Red Star’s collapse under 777 Partners, to highlight risks.

“Timeshare ownership is prohibited in France between French sports companies, but a French club can belong to a group that has other clubs abroad. The objective is to prevent it,” he explained, stressing fairness and sporting integrity across European football.

Financial and legal risks exposed in multi-club empires

The move comes as regulators intensify scrutiny of international ownership. Chelsea’s ties through BlueCo and City’s sprawling City Football Group (CFG) network raise questions over competitive integrity under UEFA’s Article 5, which prohibits two clubs with the same owner from competing in European tournaments. CFG’s growing portfolio – spanning New York, Melbourne, Mumbai, Girona, Palermo, and more – has already tested these limits. If Girona were to face City in the Champions League, UEFA would confront a direct conflict of its own rules.

Legal disputes highlight the risks: Lyon faces creditor challenges, John Textor owes €82 million (£71m/$93m) across multiple countries, and 777 Partners’ debt structures in the US signal potential instability. Questions also remain over whether CFG’s acquisition debts could breach financial fair play rules given the group owns Ligue 2 side Troyes.

Getty Images SportWhen will this bill come into effect?

The bill is expected to be presented to the National Assembly by late 2025 or early 2026. If passed, it could reshape ownership rules in French football, limiting foreign investors’ ability to control multiple clubs and ensuring transparency. Clubs like Strasbourg, owned by BlueCo (also Chelsea’s owner), could face restrictions on future dealings. The move signals France’s intent to lead Europe in regulating multi-club ownership while safeguarding financial fairness and sporting competition.

Man Utd identify £166k-a-week Bayern star as priority target, contact made

Manchester United have now identified a “strong leader” from Bayern Munich as one of their priority targets, and his agent has made contact over a potential deal, journalist Christian Falk has revealed.

Man Utd looking to sign defender alongside Baleba

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba has quickly risen to near the top of Man United’s shortlist, and they are now confident they will be able to get a deal for the Cameroonian over the line, but central midfield is not the only position in which they are keen to strengthen.

Indeed, a formal move has now been made for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, but it could be difficult for United to win the race for the Englishman, given that reigning Premier League champions Liverpool are known to be interested too.

The Red Devils have tabled a bid for a central midfielder.

As a result, the Red Devils may be forced to move on to alternatives, and they have now identified a new priority signing, according to Falk, who recently told CFBayern that Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano is one of their key targets.

In fact, Upamecano’s agent, Moussa Sissko, has now offered a number of Premier League clubs the chance to sign his client, including Man United, as reaching an agreement on a new deal with the German club has proven to be difficult.

The 26-year-old’s current contract is set to expire next summer, which means the Bundesliga champions are at risk of losing him on a free transfer, and they are hesitant to let the negotiations drag on for too long, which could pave the way for an exit.

"Strong leader" Upamecano could be exactly what Man Utd need

United legend Roy Keane has been extremely critical of United captain Bruno Fernandes in the past, with the Irishman saying: “I would take the captaincy off him 100 per cent. I know it’s a big decision, obviously they changed the captaincy with Maguire, but Fernandes is not captain material.”

Bruno Fernandes

A lack of authority on the pitch is arguably a big reason behind the Red Devils’ demise, which means the Bayern defender could be an ideal addition to the squad, given his leadership capabilities.

After watching the Frenchman play for Bayern against Celtic in the Champions League, UEFA observer Michael O’Neill said: “He was strong defensively, won all his duels, was great in possession and a strong leader.”

The former RB Leipzig man has also performed well across some key defensive metrics over the past year, when compared to other centre-backs.

La Liga president blames Premier League for 'inflated salaries' and transfer fees and reveals request for UEFA to intervene

La Liga president Javier Tebas has accused the Premier League of inflating the players' salaries and transfer fees. According to the 63-year-old, this affects the global market and other leagues including the Spanish top flight as well as he stressed the importance of "sustainability" across Europe's leagues.

  • Premier League punching above their weight?

The 2025 summer window saw around 12,000 international transfers, and the spending, as per FIFA, was a whopping $9.7 billion. This was 50% more than last season, with Premier League clubs alone spending $3.19 billion on high profile such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, who all joined Liverpool, and new Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko. This was more than the cumulative figure of Spain ($666m), Italy ($950m), France ($730m) and Germany ($980m), prompting Tebas to warning of a destructive outcome if such spending continues.

  • Getty Images Sport

Tebas explains his point with an example

While speaking at the third edition of the Expansion & Marca Business Sport Forum, he said: "We always compare ourselves to the Premier League, but we should see how we are doing compared to the Bundesliga. I want to point out how the Premier League's numbers are not correct. The turnover of La Liga and the Bundesliga is very similar; we're around €4 billion in revenue. The Premier League earns not double, but 1.8 million more, but we're going to say double. The logical thing is that if La Liga spends €700 million, the Premier League would spend €1.4 billion. But in the last seven seasons, the Premier League has always spent much more than double, which is what it should have. This year, it should have spent €1.4 billion, but it spent €4 billion. Where do those €2.5 billion come from? Losses. What happens? Inflation. If you pay more than you should have spent, you'll lose. Your turnover, what happens? If someone pays much more, it inflates salaries and affects us all because the market today is global."

He also touched on the UK government's interventions, referring to the establishment of an independent regulator, adding: "Today, the Premier League is being intervened by the government because they are worried about what is happening to English football. Last year, it lost €1.2 billion; La Liga isn't going to lose money, nor is the Bundesliga. I no longer talk about Italy and France because they are much worse off. We always go to the Premier League, but I am careful about the state of the Premier League, which has reached the point of being invested in by the government. Companies are competitive and economically sustainable. What we are doing in Spanish football is very important."

  • Tebas approached UEFA

Tebas wants to curb the Premier League's spending, and to get it incorporated, he has approached UEFA multiple times.

"The rules need to be made much more uniform because they're different," he said. "What's allowed in the Premier League isn't allowed in Spain, and UEFA should take an interventionist stance there. We've had a few meetings with UEFA, and we'll see if we continue along those lines, which is what everyone wants, including many Premier League teams."

La Liga more like Bundesliga than Premier League
