Need to tie him down: Everton fans make their feelings clear on Idrissa Gueye

[ad_pod ]

Idrissa Gueye reportedly asked to leave Everton for Paris Saint-Germain in the latter stages of the January transfer window.

PSG could not agree a deal with the Toffees, though, and the midfielder ultimately remained at Goodison Park.

Gueye has not sulked, however, and has continued to put in strong performances for the Merseyside outfit in the middle of the park.

Kurt Zouma – on loan at Everton from Chelsea – has recently paid tribute to the 29-year-old for his brilliant form.

And that led to a host of the club’s supporters commenting on Gueye – a 2016 arrival from Aston Villa.

It remains to be seen whether PSG make another move for the midfielder in this summer’s transfer window and Gueye will be fearing that the ship has sailed.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

Everton appear to be heading in the right direction, though, and Gueye will surely want to hear of the club’s plans for this summer before making a decision.

The Chalkboard: How Leeds can stop Che Adams this weekend

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United travel to St Andrew’s with hopes of consolidating second place in the Championship but will have to do something they couldn’t earlier in the season, stop Che Adams.

The young striker netted twice at Elland Road earlier in the season and Marcelo Bielsa’s focus this week has to be on halting him.

Dangerous partnership

Adams has scored 21 times for Birmingham so far this season earning himself a nomination for Championship Player of the Year.

The Blues striker is a dynamic player; combining pace and strength with a knack of scoring from range making him one of the most frustrating forwards in the division to play against.

The partnership he has struck up with target man Lukas Jutkiewicz this season has been nothing short of incredible – Jutkiewicz has assisted Adams five times already this season, often being at the heart of attacks which lead to goals.

If Leeds plan on stopping Adams they first need to be able to nullify to Jutkiewicz’s influence on the game.

Stop Adams on both fronts

Leeds need to make sure Pontus Jansson sticks with Jutkiewicz all day. the 6’4″ Swede is one of the only defenders in the division who can consistently get the better of Jutkiewicz in the air and if Bielsa assigns him to man mark the former Burnley forward, it will severely affect the influence that Adams can have on the game.

With Bielsa being the master of preparation he will be more than aware of the dangers Adams and Jutkiewicz pose as a partnership and he did a great job of stifling the latter in September, although he failed to account for the fact Adams likes to drop deep and shoot from range. Both of Adams’ goals at Elland Road came from outside the area with the striker having plenty of space to take his shot.

Bielsa needs to rely on Kalvin Phillips to close Adams down as soon as he gets within shooting range or else it could be a repeat. It can be a difficult task to battle Adams on both fronts but Leeds have to combat both if they are to stop him adding to the 21 goals he has netted already this season.

Crystal Palace: Roy Hodgson is yesterday’s man

An idealistic mind can often be a thing of danger.

Crystal Palace are realising this the hard way, with manager Roy Hodgson’s philosophy not exactly matching their own. The experienced manager took them a long way in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, only to fall disappointingly to Watford, rendering the rest of the campaign pointless.

In a game pitting the new style against the old, Javi Gracia proved why the new and emerging tactics will always be more effective. Watford outwitted Palace in their own game, giving them enough respect to hold their line and nudge through a win. Hodgson, however, was lacklustre with his approach.

The Hornets wouldn’t allow a repeat of the 2016 FA Cup haunt them. Despite Michy Batshuayi’s world-class strike serving as a beacon of hope, the Hornets crushed their hopes immediately afterwards. A lack of concentration or organization caused the Eagles downfall. Unlike Gracia, Hodgson wasn’t pragmatic enough with his approach and went into the game thinking his side as the “bigger” one, something which came back to haunt him.

However, much to everyone’s surprise, he discarded the FA Cup “as a bonus”, reiterating the Eagles’ focus on securing a better Premier League finish. He’s done a lot of good work at Palace, but Hodgson doesn’t have that winning mentality anymore.

Under his reign, the Eagles will keep on strutting ahead and never really achieve anything commendable anytime soon. The Eagles had the opportunity to fly high in the FA Cup once again yet failed. As good a job Hodgson has done, he’s beginning to look behind the times.

Yet Hodgson’s careless approach tarnished their hopes, robbing the fans of a date with Wembley.

Super talent: Aston Villa fans lavish praise on Paul Merson

[ad_pod ]

What a player Paul Merson truly was.

Technically brilliant with an eye for a pass, Merson started his professional career with Arsenal, before representing the likes of Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Walsall.

It was Merson’s 51st birthday on Wednesday and one of his former clubs – Villa – paid tribute to the former attacker with a message on their social media page.

Merson turned out for Villa between 1998 and 2002, scoring 19 times in 129 appearances in all competitions.

There is no question that he is still highly regarded by the club’s fans and a large number were keen to pay tribute to the pundit on Wednesday.

Merson made 21 England appearances during his professional career, but there is a general feeling that he should have turned out on more occasions for the national team due to his immense quality.

Leeds fans hopeful that Daniel James interest will be reignited amidst contract stall

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans have been hoping that their interest in Dan James will be reignited amidst reports from the BBC that contract talks with Swansea City have come to a standstill.

Leeds were on the verge of completing a deal for the midfielder on deadline day in January but Swansea caused the deal to fall through at the 11th hour.

James had even completed a medical at Elland Road ahead of the proposed loan move, which would have become permanent had Leeds been promoted to the Premier League.

Leeds fans on Twitter have been hoping that the Yorkshire club will go back in for James in the summer and with no contract renewal on the horizon, the midfielder could be available for a cut-price fee.

The 21-year-old has scored twice and assisted four goals this season so far and Leeds fans are optimistic that the lack of a new deal could see him playing at Elland Road next season after he came within hours of joining the club in January.

Here’s a look at what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter….

Arsenal: Napoli will be a difficult test but Emery can win the lot

It just had to be Napoli, didn’t it?

After scraping through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League following a 4-2 aggregate win against Stade Rennais, Arsenal faces arguably their most difficult test this season after being drawn with Italian side Napoli.

It’s starting to feel like last season all over again. With Champions League qualification via a top-four finish still in the balance, Europa League glory might be the most viable option for passage back to Europe’s elite competition, and then Arsenal get drawn with the hardest team in the tournament.

That’s not to say Napoli are on par with Atletico Madrid, far from it. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are one of the most entertaining teams to watch in all of Europe, and this has been the case for some years.

Napoli is the club where ‘Sarriball’ was birthed and is the method of play that last season almost resulted in the south Italian team winning their first Scudetto in 1990. But just like most things in Italy, Juventus turned up and ruined the party.

League heartbreak aside, Napoli remain one of the best teams in the country and one of the most exciting club sides in all of Europe. But should Arsenal be worried?

On paper, the Gunners should be cautious. This is Napoli we’re talking about, a thrilling team to watch that play the beautiful game at 100MPH, but at the same time, they are a team that can buckle under pressure, and especially in Europe.

Since returning to Europe this decade Gli Azzurri have been one of the most underwhelming sides in the continental competitions. Napoli finished third in their Champions League group with PSG and Liverpool finishing above them and last season they again finished third in their group, this time losing out to Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Napoli have never been one to get a result against English teams, and this will be a big factor for Arsenal when going into this tie. The Gunners have already played against the Italian side this decade in the Champions League group stage, winning 2-0 at home and then losing the away fixture by the same scoreline.

With Unai Emery’s side playing at home in the first leg, it is vital the Gunners get a big result and avoid letting in an away goal. Arsenal’s defending in the big games as of late has been impressive, with clean sheets against Stade Rennais and Manchester United at home as well as a valiant performance away to Spurs.

It will be the away leg that Arsenal fans must worry about.

We all know about the form away from home and the shaky defence Arsenal currently have, and going away to a stadium as intimidating as the Stadio Sao Paulo could have a major effect on how this series ends up.

But if the Gunners defence turn up like they have done in recent weeks, Arsenal could be looking forward to a Europa League semi-final against either Emery’s old side in Valencia or be welcoming home a club hero in Santi Cazorla.

Arsenal fans, do you think Arsenal can progress against Napoli?

Newcastle United: Colback’s deal should be torn up to get him off the books

Jack Colback knows his future is anything but black and white, after accepting that his Newcastle days are over, which leaves him in something of a limbo state.

The midfielder who made the seldom-trod path from Wearside to Tyneside has made it known that he would be open to extending his loan stay at Nottingham Forest into a permanent one, but knows that it may be out of his hands, with the player — contrary to popular belief — having a year left on his Newcastle contract.

He told the Nottingham Post: “I have a year left on my contract at Newcastle… when I saw the reports that said I was out of contract, I had to check with my agent that I did have a year left.

“It is not as though I am looking at it and thinking that I will go back to Newcastle and try to get back in the team. I am realistic enough to know that, if the current manager is still there, I am not going to be playing.

“I am not sat here thinking that things might change if he goes – the way I am looking at it is to think that I haven’t played for the club for two years and it is unlikely that I will do again.

“We will see what happens in the summer.”

He went on to state that he would like to sign a deal at Forest, but that it was “not as straightforward as a yes or no”.

“If you ask me if I would like to come back and sign permanently, the answer is yes, [but] it is not as easy as that in football. Forest themselves have to commit to a permanent deal. Then you have to work out that deal.

“It is not as straightforward as a yes or no. But I have enjoyed my time here and, if the opportunity arose, it is one I would view positively, with good thought.

“I know the club, because I have been there a little while. I know the players, I have enjoyed my time here and my family are happy, so let’s see what happens.”

There are not many Magpies fans who would be sad to see him go, with any player who has an alleged bust-up with Rafa, never likely to be sided with by the fans.

Colback was never truly embraced into the fold by the Newcastle public, except when it was used as an ideal opportunity to rub it into their Wearside neighbours.

The simple fact is that he was just not good enough.

The best thing for all parties, we think, would be for Newcastle to simply tear up the remainder of his contract at the end of the season, and let him have his move.

Any potential fee would be nominal, at best, and the likely scenario of him training with the reserves while picking up his significant salary, would benefit no one.

What are your thoughts Newcastle fans? Were you a Colback fan? Would you let him go for nothing? Give us your thoughts below…

Injury misery: Matt Jansen and Blackburn Rovers

It is a sad thing when one of football’s most promising talents slips into obscurity because of injury – and that is exactly what happened to Matt Jansen.

It is a dangerous world for the talented to enter – the dazzling lights of the Premier League, the stardom, the expectations, the highs and lows, rejection and jubilation.

And former forward Matt Jansen’s career encompasses them all, and some.

It really is a tragic tale to analyse. The story of the man who had it all cruelly ripped away by one of sports most unwanted events.

Jansen had just made his £4 million move from Crystal Palace when the reality hit him – the very conscious moment that he was about to take his inaugural leap into stardom, the pivotal moment of his life, under the watchful guidance of Premier League winning side Blackburn Rovers.

Ok – it did not quite turn out as planned, with Blackburn suffering relegation soon after, but 24 goals in 48 matches on the road back to the topflight really showed that he meant business, as did the 16 he netted when he finally made it to the sacred land of Premier League football.

Ironically, it was being on the cusp of something so special that brought down a special career.

The World Cup squad selection was looming, and Jansen was touted as one of the obvious selections, given his form and ability.

He recounted his experience.

“Sven Goran Eriksson was at our game at Liverpool the day before the squad was announced and he told Graeme Souness that I should try not to get injured because I was going to the World Cup,” Jansen recalled (as per the Independent).

“It was quite a shock,” he said.

“But apparently, Sven and Tord Grip decided they should have an extra defender and so, at the 11th hour, they took Martin Keown instead of me.”

Like the proverbial flap of the butterflies wings, the decision to leave Jansen out of the squad would kickstart a chain of events that would irreversibly change the course of his life.

During an extended break from the game, spent with his girlfriend, and now wife, Jansen was involved in a serious crash that left him with a brain haemorrhage and in a coma for six days.

“I recovered physically, but not mentally. Before the accident I was on fire, I was on the verge of an England call-up. I was high on confidence – but I could never regain that,” Jansen recounted years later after returning to the game (Independent).

“The psychologists and psychiatrists and brain surgeons said I shouldn’t have played for 18 months – if at all,” says Jansen. “But I felt ready. However, though I might have been physically ready, I wasn’t mentally ready. I had psychological problems. I was playing, but I was my own worst critic after the accident.”

He then went on to discuss the mental effects of not feeling good enough – the depressing slumps in professional football after falling from the limelight, the challenges of recovery and the constant pressures he could never overcome.

Despite returning to Premier League football, Jansen freely admits he was never the same, and after some brief stints in the top divisions, he eventually succumbed to his fate, dropping down to play in the lowest tiers for Wrexham, Leigh Genesis FC and Chorley before giving the game up together – immortalised as one of the most profound cases of ‘what if?’
