Why Tottenham need to stump up for Ryan Sessegnon

[ad_pod ]

Fulham value Ryan Sessegnon at £40million, with Tottenham Hotspur interested in signing the left-back, according to the Daily Mail.

Mauricio Pochettino is understood to be plotting a summer overhaul of his squad as Spurs prepare for their first season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What’s the word?

Sessegnon has been a shining light in Fulham’s dismal season this term, with the Cottagers already having been relegated to the Championship.

The 18-year-old has missed just three games in the Premier League in 2018-19 and has scored two goals and laid on six assists.

His performances have seen Spurs identify him as a key target ahead of the transfer window and they are poised to table a formal bid soon.

However, Spurs value the teenager at closer to £25m and it remains to be seen if the two clubs will be able to agree to a compromise in the coming weeks.

The new Shaw

Pochettino has worked his magic on left-backs before.

Luke Shaw became the world’s most expensive teenager when he moved from Southampton to Manchester United after blossoming under the tutelage of the Argentine.

The 5 foot 10 youngster has been playing in a much poorer team than Spurs this season and would benefit hugely from working under Pochettino.

A deal worth £40m may seem steep but could prove to be excellent value in the long run, with Shaw an example to follow.

Sessegnon has the raw tools to become one of the best full-backs in the league – he is quick, excellent in attack and has a genuine eye for goal, although his defensive game still requires some work – and he could also move further forward into a left wing role.

He would surely replace Ben Davies in the short-term – the Welshman is not the marauding force Sessegnon is – and he could become a genuine Premier League star in north London.

No deal: Liverpool will not be moving for Lorenzo Insigne this summer

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his team will not be moving for Napoli attacker Lorenzo Insigne in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the latest?

Well, a report in Corriere dello Sport claimed that Liverpool were interested in swooping for Insigne.

Indeed, it has been suggested that the 27-year-old has fallen out with Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti, which could lead to a summer departure.

However, Klopp – speaking at his press confidence ahead of Friday night’s clash with Huddersfield Town – rejected the transfer speculation.

The Liverpool manager simply stated that his team would not be moving for the Italy international in this summer’s transfer window.

It seems likely that a new attacker will arrive at Anfield this summer, but that player will not be Insigne.

Will Liverpool regret not making a move?

Insigne has scored 76 times in 302 appearances for Napoli in all competitions, including 13 times during the 2018-19 campaign.

The 30-time international is a big talent, but he has a contract in Naples until the summer of 2022, suggesting that Liverpool would have to make a sizeable bid to convince the Serie A club to sell.

Whilst Insigne would improve a lot of clubs, he would not go into Liverpool’s starting XI due to the presence of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

As a result, the Merseyside outfit would be much better off spending the money on a top-quality central midfielder this summer.

Indeed, Klopp would be better off attempting to sign a player capable of contributing goals and assists from a deeper position, which would take the Reds to a new level next season.

Between The Lines: Kevin McCabe’s comments may not be as positive as first thought

[ad_pod ]

Despite a seemingly positive update from their chairman regarding the club’s transfer budget, Sheffield United fans may have reason to be worried about their team’s chances in the Premier League next season.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, co-owner Kevin McCabe has echoed Chris Wilder’s sentiment that the squad doesn’t need a huge turnover, which may show a lack of ambition.

What’s been said then?

The chairman has promised the fans and the manager a decent sized transfer budget, but how it is spent may not be very ambitious.

“Let’s just say it’ll be a healthy one. We’re not in the Premier League for fun and when you play in any market, you can’t buck it.” McCabe said.

“So it’s about considering everything carefully. We’re not going to be rash, we’re not going to be stupid.

“We’ve got to plan in the Premier League to have a nucleus of a squad that will maintain its position, but that if we did come on hard times, we wouldn’t go down with a massive, massive tumble.”

How can this be interpreted?

It seems that Sheffield United will approach this transfer window in a similar way to Cardiff this time last year.

Rather than signing huge names on big wages, the Welsh club brought in a batch of reliable players who would be happy to stay with the club whichever league they’re in.

McCabe saying that the squad needs a nucleus of players who will stay if the team are relegated shows that the Blades may not reach for the stars in terms of their signings.

The club may opt to bring in solid individuals who have a chance of keeping if they drop back down into the Championship.

This doesn’t always work well in terms of staying in the Premier League, but it allows the Blades to not overextend themselves, leaving them with a strong squad in the second tier if they can’t beat the drop.

Middlesbrough: Fletcher simply must start if Pulis has any hope of making the play-offs

Ashley Fletcher was sensational at Bolton on Tuesday night, and with his two-goal display, provided more ammunition for fans in their growing frustration at manager, Tony Pulis.

His refusal to play the 23-year-old more, or give him a long run in the team, has been something the fans have been vocal about during the recent bad run Boro’ have endured.

If the Teesside club do miss out on the play-offs, they will wonder why Pulis did not turn to the young striker earlier, despite his argument that the player’s age means he cannot play in every game.

Fletcher, who endured a tough time on loan at rivals Sunderland last season, was speaking today before the game against Hull on Saturday, which Pulis has already hinted he will start in.

He only scored two goals for the Black Cats during his temporary spell at the Stadium Of Light, but insists that, even when he was struggling for form, he “never ducked the issue” and it helped him “develop as a player”.

He said: “I think the experiences of last season have helped me, 100 per cent.

“In a weird way, it was definitely character building for me. I had to grow up a lot and handle a lot of things. The biggest thing was that I never ducked the issue, and that’s been important for helping me develop as a player.

“We all knew we were in trouble, but I didn’t hide away, and so whatever is thrown at me in the future, I know I can handle it and deal with it.

“As long as you go out there and give 100 per cent, that’s all you can influence as a player. That’s an important lesson I learned.”

His form recently with Boro’ has been anything but a struggle, however, and he will hope to see that continue by scoring against Hull this weekend, with fans eager for him succeed.

There has always been a big rivalry between Boro’ and their neighbours up the A19, and Fletcher’s comments on the Wearsiders promotion hopes this season may upset a few of the Riverside faithful, regardless of him having spent time there last season.

He added: “In a strange way, I have to thank Sunderland. I went there as their number nine, and it’s a huge club. I hope to see them back in the Championship next season.”

But his loyalties are well and truly on Boro’ now, and it will be interesting to see the decision Pulis makes if he puts in another good performance against Hull, particularly with the manager’s insistence that he needs rest between games.

The manager may be in for a torrid time if he leaves the young striker out again, and the following results go against them.

What do you think of Ashley Fletcher’s performance at Bolton on Tuesday? Do you agree he needs rest, or would you give him a decent run in the side? Let us know your thoughts…

Arsenal fans discuss prospect of Lacazette departure

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette has been linked with a move to Barcelona, per Mundo Deportivo.

The Catalan giants are said to be interested in the prospect of securing the France international this summer.

Indeed, Lacazette is regarded as a back-up to the potential signing of Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, who is said to be Barca’s top target for the upcoming transfer window.

The forward has scored 18 goals and laid on 12 assists thus far this term and would cost around €70million (£59.5m), though the club are said to be exploring the possibility of including players in the deal. Both central defender Samuel Umtiti and midfielder Andre Gomes, currently on loan at Everton, are said to be possibilities.

And fans have been fairly mixed on the possibility of Lacazette leaving the club, with some believing they should take the money and reinvest, while others think he is perhaps their best player.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Manchester United should make summer move for PSG man after latest update

Manchester United are set for a massive summer this time round following a miserable performance against Everton this weekend.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was visibly shaken by his side’s showing at Goodison Park on Sunday, and he will no doubt now be keen to address thoses issues he has seen in his squad come the summer.

The board are expected to back the Norwegian with some big money, and if reports in the media are to believed, there could well be some big change in personnel at Old Trafford.

This weekend has seen plenty of talk here in the Tavern, but with reports emerging that PSG striker Edinson Cavani is still unsure on his future with the French giants, we think that United need to act now and ensure they sign the experienced striker.

The 32-year-old might not be a young player who many United fans are calling for the club to sign, but you can never have enough top level experience in your team, and Cavani might well prove to be a shrewd capture for the Red Devils.

His record in Europe at both Napoli and PSG is superb, and he would surely relish the chance of making an impact over the in the Premier League.

With Romelu Lukaku struggling and his future looking uncertain, Cavani would be the perfect sort of signing for United. His work-rate as well as his goals make him the ideal sort of player to come into the club at a difficult time, and he is exactly the sort of character needed for Solskjaer.

Leeds United: Bielsa’s side need to more clinical in final four Championship clashes

After 15 years away, Leeds United are now within touching distance of a return to the Premier League.

Last Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday saw the Whites move three points clear of their automatic promotion rivals Sheffield United after Chris Wilder’s side could only achieve a draw at Bramall Lane against Millwall.

With just four games left to play between now and the end of the season, Marcelo Bielsa knows that three wins and a draw will be good enough to secure a top-two finish in the Championship. However, despite beating the Owls at the weekend, the Argentine may be concerned about his side’s failure to convert a number of fantastic chances at Elland Road.

Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts both missed great opportunities to calm the nerves amongst the club’s supporters before Jack Harrison finally opened the scoring in the 65th minute in a game that was dominated by Leeds. Although the overall performance was an impressive showing by the Whites, if they do not improve their composure in-front of goal in their last four games of the year, they may risk coming unstuck.

Indeed, it is very unlikely that any of the remaining goalkeepers that Bielsa’s side will play will be able to produce the same level of performance as Keiren Westwood did for the Owls yet they may not need to if they offer the same threat going forward. With Leeds having to face Brentford and Aston Villa over the next two weeks, they know that if they do not sharpen up they could face the real possibility of being leapfrogged by the Blades in May.

To counter this, Bielsa may decide to bring Keemar Roofe back into the starting eleven. The former Oxford United forward has been limited to substitute appearances since returning from injury earlier this month. Top-scorer with 14 goals this season, Roofe could provide the impetus needed to help his side overcome the final hurdle in what has been a brilliant year for the Whites.

What do you think Leeds fans? Are you concerned by the number of chances that your players have been missing in recent games? Could bringing Roofe back into your team see you overcome these issues? Let us know below.
