Leeds fans rejoice as Pablo Hernandez finally gets TOTY nod

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans on Twitter have rejoiced after Pablo Hernandez was named as a part of the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Fans of the Yorkshire club had previously been irked by the fact that the Spaniard was omitted from the EFL’s version.

Hernandez has been in incredible form for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season netting 12 goals and getting a further 12 assists.

Those supporters now feel less aggrieved as the midfielder earned a spot in the PFA’s side.

While things haven’t gone to plan generally in 2019, the Whites have still had a fantastic campaign under Bielsa so it is no surprise that their players are now getting individual plaudits.

Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper were the other two representatives from the Yorkshire outfit in the Team of the Year, but it was Hernandez who all the fans focused on this time around.

Liverpool fans frustrated with Lovren after latest set back

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been showing their frustration with Dejan Lovren after he was ruled out of Wednesday’s Champions League game against Porto due to illness.

Lovren has missed a whole host of games for Liverpool due to injury and illness this season, making only 14 appearances for the Reds in all competitions this season.

During Lovren’s absence, Joel Matip has firmly established himself as Virgil Van Dijk’s partner at the back and with Joe Gomez’s imminent return Lovren appears to be slipping down to fourth in the pecking order when it comes to Liverpool’s centre-halves.

As well as losing his place in the team he has seemingly lost the backing of the supporters. The Anfield faithful have become more and more frustrated with Lovren’s lack of fitness and certain sections of the fanbase are now calling for him to be sold this summer after his latest set back.

The Chalkboard: Rangers’ dominance over Aberdeen provides big boost for next season

[ad_pod ]

Rangers finally asserted their dominance over Aberdeen on Sunday, and it will provide a huge boost for the squad going into next season.

Even though Sunday’s 2-0 win at Ibrox keeps the title dream alive for another week, every Ger knows it is only a matter of time before Celtic wrap up yet another league title.

Of course, Steven Gerrard would not have expected to win everything in his first season, and the Gers are still rebuilding.

One thing that has plagued them all season is Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen side, who had won three and drawn two of the previous six encounters between the two this season.

The Dons have been the bane of Gerrard’s existence this term, but not anymore.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

On the chalkboard

Rangers didn’t just beat Aberdeen on Sunday; they battered them.

Gerrard’s side were first to every ball, won everything in the air, played quicker with the ball and worked harder off it. Quite simply, the Dons were no match for a Gers side in full flight.

James Tavernier scored both goals from the spot courtesy of two fouls on Nikola Katic, but with 66% of the possession, 16 shots to four and seven corners to one (BBC), the hosts could have scored four or five on another day.

Gerrard and his side already know they can beat Celtic, and it’s been Aberdeen that have really given them the most hassle head-to-head this season.

That said, to end the campaign with an utterly dominant showing against McInnes’ side should provide an immense confidence boost going into next season, perhaps leading the players to believe they truly can go all the way this time.

Keeping Matt Clarke is essential for Portsmouth this summer

Portsmouth are set for an enthralling couple of weeks as they hope to be victorious yet again at Wembley, come the end of the season. God it’s nervy, isn’t it? Why couldn’t the team manage automatic promotion and save you all from this stress? Football really isn’t fair.

Still, having won the Checkatrade Trophy, topping the season off with promotion back into the Championship via the play-offs would be a momentous achievement for those on the south coast. They have done so well to lodge themselves in with a fantastic chance of achieving just that this season, which was inspired by their trophy win in March.

Kenny Jackett is clearly a great manager at this level who has proven a lot during this campaign, though whatever league Pompey maybe in next season, it is vital he retains his key players whilst adding some new ones as well. Otherwise, the whole project could go sourly.

One player who is surely near the top of the list of players to stay is central-defender Matt Clarke, who has again been brilliant this season.

Clarke, (who is valued at £180k on Transfermarkt) has been a player of interest for a number of clubs in the past but if Portsmouth are serious about progressing, he must be one of the players who sticks around.

Having played in every single League One game this season, the service he provides Portsmouth is certainly appreciated and he is consistently giving his all for the shirt. Not gaining promotion would present a significant challenge to Pompey, with Clarke surely likely to be offered a route to the Championship without Portsmouth.

Though if they do manage to make it through the play-offs, Clarke would be key to help consolidate their place within the division and he is massively important of the team that they cannot afford to let go.

Unheard of Serie B ace David Okereke would make Rondon a distant memory at Newcastle

Newcastle fans are starting to really fear that Salomon Rondon may not find his way to St James Park permanently this summer. The Venezuelan striker could easily be replaced should the right man come to the Magpies, though, and that man could be the new Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Okereke, who is linked with the club by The Sun.

Okereke has been the main reason that Serie B club Spezia are in with a shout of winning promotion to the Italian top flight. His 30 league games for the club have resulted in ten goals and 12 assists, and with that kind of return, he would be more than worth a go in the Premier League. Especially seeing as he’s being touted as the next Aubameyang. If he were to come in and grab even half of the goals Auba got this season he’d be a massive hit.

Rondon has thrived for the most at St James Park in the second half of the season as he’s been able to partner up with the ever-impressive Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron, and should that trio become Okereke, Almiron and Perez next season the chances are the goals will still fly. The Nigerian frontman has pace to burn which, when coupled with his finishing, makes him a deadly hit-man.

The Premier League has seen plenty of players like the 21-year-old come in and flop, so if he was to be brought in it would be a huge gamble on Rafa Benitez’s part, but Rafa is a cool customer. If anyone knows what they’re doing and make the right call under the pressure of Mike Ashley and the goldfish bowl that is Newcastle United, then it’s Benitez.

If Okereke did come in as Rondon’s replacement it would be foolish for the Geordies to expect the Nigerian to immediately smash the numbers their Venezuelan managed, but in time he has the potential to outdo the 29-year-old West Brom man. It would be a transfer that requires patience, but with plenty of pundits ready to get behind the hype of the young Spezia man, it wouldn’t hurt for Rafa to make him his Rondon replacement.

Rangers: Sell Morelos to build a squad capable of challenging Celtic next season

Alfredo Morelos is a liability and needs to be sold this summer. It’d be annoying for the club and fans to see his talent wasted, but his hefty transfer fee would allow Rangers to strengthen in so many areas.

The Colombian hot-head has racked up three red cards and nine yellows so far this season. He’s let the team down on too many occasions and his talent won’t make up for that. 17 goals and eight assists in the Scottish Premiership is impressive, but he just can’t be trusted.

Gerrard needs discipline in his squad and that’s been lacking at times this season. The old-firm derby proved that for millions to see. He also needs to add quality all over the pitch and the sale of Morelos could solve both those issues.

Despite being rated at just £2.7m on Transfermarkt, the fact he signed a new contract in March means it’d take a large fee for any club to take him off Rangers’ hands. They could spread that money across the squad and improve it significantly. Indeed, Eldesmarque believe Real Betis are interested in the 22-year-old.

If they want to challenge Celtic for the league and cups next season it won’t be good enough to sign a couple of cheap, young players and hope they develop into stars. They’ve tried that this season. It worked to a degree, but it ultimately failed to secure them a trophy.

The sale of Morelos would give them a chance to deepen their squad and fill it with players who don’t have the childish mentality Morelos has proved he’s got. It’d be a tough decision for director of football Mark Allen to sell him, but it’d be the right one.

Arsene Wenger: I still have the appetite to get back into football

When Arsene Wenger announced he was going to step down from his role as Arsenal manager after 22 years in April 2018, it sent a shudder through the football club.

For the first time in over two decades, they were now searching for change. It was new territory for the Gunners but it was also unfamiliar for Wenger.

This was a man who had given so much of his time to football. Blood, sweat and tears had been sapped from the 69-year-old's body during a spell that included unparalleled domestic success in the club's history, but also a nine-year trophy drought.

The Gunners' last league title was won by the Invincibles. That provides you with all the evidence you need of the meteoric fall from grace the Gunners have had.

Yet he will always go down as one of the very best. His success may not have been sustained but the way in which he revolutionised Arsenal as a football club, business and brand will never be forgotten.

It's been a long year for Wenger. Since leaving the Gunners he's attended charity events and also offered his expertise in the form of punditry.

However, the former Arsenal boss still has the hunger to succeed in the game, insisting to Football FanCast: "I will get back into football for sure, whether that's as a manager or not.

"I think the appetite is still there. The desire is still there but I know the type of life I have in front of me. I have to decide that now," he said.

Wenger's attitude has always been unquestionable. He's one of the hardest working managers football has seen and it was his sheer will and determination that took him to so many major honours in north London.

But what was questioned was his ability to succeed later on in his tenure.

There was a cloud lingering over him in London for a considerable period and after finally taking the decision to step down in 2018, he insists he still made the right choice: "I was never too much concerned about how it would be taken but I did what I think was right," Wenger claimed when talking about the way he left Arsenal.

Arriving from Nagoya Grampus Eight as an unknown, he transformed the nature of English football leaving behind a lasting legacy. No one will forget just what he did for the club.

The ex-Monaco man hasn't found a job in management since leaving, but it surely won't be long before he gets back into things. "Initially I said I would manage straight away but now I have taken a little bit of distance and I came to the conclusion that I wanted to share what I learned in life," Wenger asserted.

The last year hasn't gone by without its troubles though. The stress of football management is monumental but just being away from the game he loves appears to have been difficult for the Frenchman.

"Like everyone in life you have competition with others and the competition with yourself. The toughest one was with myself," he stated.

There were also concerns that he'd find it a struggle to keep himself occupied. This is a man who has gone from dedicating every working hour and beyond to Arsenal. As a result, the year away was bound to feel incredibly different.

"I was in front of the unknown," Wenger explained. "You never know how you respond to that situation. I always worked, I never stopped. I started at 29 as a manager. That's 40 years."

Considering the tough times he endured in his later years in Islington, it will have been a welcome relief to have some time off. The job he would've had on his hands to restore Arsenal to its former glory means departing was probably a blessing for all parties too.

Yet after having time away, Wenger admitted: "It was enjoyable. It's not so much the stress. I am always under stress a little bit. It was a good feeling – I don't have to get up or to move. I have a life that is interesting."

His days now are spent playing sport, rather than coaching it. At his age, his attitude towards life is infectious.

But there's also been other activities to fill his time. "I do a lot of different sport. That occupies and I travelled a lot. I did a lot of game observation and charities. I did many conferences on football, on management, on motivation and on the meaning of life."

Where his future lies now is anyone's guess. Following a year away from the touchline, things have moved on. So has Wenger. But whatever job he next walks into will be fascinating to oversee.

Wenger was speaking on behalf of Playermaker.

Tottenham: Daniel Levy must cash in on Eric Dier to challenge for title

Eric Dier has proved in the last few months that he’s simply not good enough to lead Spurs’ midfield to silverware. As a result, Daniel Levy should cash in on him in the summer and spend the money on a replacement.

The 25-year-old was dubbed the ‘new John Terry’ when Spurs signed him from Sporting Lisbon in 2014. The transfer cost £5m, according to Transfermarkt, so they’ve got their money’s worth out of him, but now it’s time for the club to move forward.

His performance against West Ham on Saturday was embarrassing, but Football Insider are claiming Manchester United are plotting a summer move for the Englishman. That should be music to Daniel Levy’s ears, and he should bite their hand off when they approach him.

He’s rated at £40m on Transfermarkt, so Mauricio Pochettino could bring in a really high fee considering he’s pretty expendable. That’ll mean the money can be spent on bringing in a younger, more energetic player, perhaps from abroad to keep the price down.

It’d be annoying to see one of their stars going to a fierce rival, but if they’re willing to sell him then he shouldn’t really make much of a difference when it comes to winning trophies. Man United seem way off winning anything anyway, so they might not even be considered a rival!

What a glorious thought for Spurs fans, right?

Dier has made 18 appearances for Spurs this season, so he’s not been one of their key men. Harry Winks and certainly Moussa Sissoko (yes, really) are the players Spurs should be keeping for next season at least. Indeed, a new first choice is needed and the Dier money can fund that.

Celtic fans could rest easy if Charles Herrmann-Jesaja came in as a Weah replacement

Celtic fans recently said goodbye to one of their more impressive young loanees soon in Timothy Weah. The young American striker has proved to be very good when he’s played and a lack of game time for the striker has been frustrating for the fans. However, if this report from Turkish-Football is true they could have a perfect replacement.

The Bhoys are reportedly interested in Wolfsburg’s young 19-year-old striker Charles-Jesaja-Herrmann and if they can get the young German, who has impressed at youth levels for his country as well as his club, then it will be as if they never lost Timo Weah in the first place. Goals have flown freely for the young Wolfsburg man, and with 19 combined goals and assists this season, he’d be perfect at Parkhead.

According to the article, it may be tough for the Bhoys to get this one wrapped up as Celtic will be set to do battle with both Newcastle and Everton for his signature, as well as interest from Turkey. The chances are that Wolfsburg will not be keen on letting their young sensation leave cheaply so Celtic could be the perfect destination, as they’d be able to offer a loan option for the striker knowing he’d play.

At the age of 19, it is so important that Jesaja-Herrmann is treated right wherever he goes and if that means going on loan to get a taste of the more robust brand of football on offer in Scotland then so be it. The Bhoys have got a talented squad, but the level of football north of the border can be brutish at times, and it would be a good lesson for the young striker.

His combination of 19 goals and assists this season is mightily impressive as he tears up the German youth league. Goals have flown freely and he’s also helped to chip in wish assists when needed, and it really is no surprise to see so many top clubs eyeing up a move for the young German hitman. It would come as no shock to see him put Weah’s goal return to shame and the Bhoys will be keen to see just that if he does find himself at Parkhead on-loan or permanently next season.
