QPR fans react as Yoann Barbet signs three-year deal at Loftus Road

[ad_pod ]

QPR clearly plan to rebuild from the back having signed goalkeeper Liam Kelly, full-back Lee Wallace and now Yoann Barbet, with the 26-year-old joining on a free upon the expiry of his contract with Brentford.

The Frenchman made 30 starts for the Bees last term and his versatility will undoubtedly be a huge asset to Mark Warburton as he strives to figure out his best XI – Barbet can play at centre-back or left-back.

Signing an experienced Championship defender with the ability to play out from the back and add a physical presence for free is rare, and exactly the kind of deal QPR should be doing if they are to climb back up the table.

The QPR keeper was giving it large to Bolton fans at the weekend. Find out who had the last laugh in the video below…

The Hoops conceded 71 goals in the league in 2018/19 – the worst defensive record outside of the bottom three – and this weakness has clearly been recognised by Warburton, with Wallace and Barbet bringing experience to an unsteady backline.

Here’s what the Loftus Road faithful had to say about the addition on Twitter, with a couple rubbing it in Bees fans’ faces, while another labelled the signing “unreal”…

Lifelong contract: Tottenham fans are desperate for Danny Rose to pen new deal

[ad_pod ]

According to The Independent, Danny Rose would like to stay at Tottenham Hotspur and possibly sign a new contract with the Champions League finalists.

Rose ended the 2018-19 campaign having made 37 appearances for Spurs – contributing five assists for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The 28-year-old only has two years left to run on his current deal.

However, according to The Independent, Rose wants to pen a fresh contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Liverpool in Saturday night’s Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Rose was one of his team’s better performers, though, with WhoScored awarding the 5 ft 8 defender the highest rating of any Tottenham player.

The England international has looked back to his best in recent months and it would be fair to say that the Spurs fans are desperate for him to stay at the club.

Jurgen Klopp would have to go back on his words from May to land Nicolas Pepe

[ad_pod ]

According to L’Equipe, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid are eyeing a move for Lille’s Nicolas Pepe, with the Italian side said to have submitted a bid close to €90m (£80.5m) for his services already.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Serie A giants and Diego Simeone’s side are locked in a battle to sign the Ivory Coast international, who enjoyed a standout 2018/19 campaign with Lille.

The 6 ft forward scored 23 goals and recorded 12 assists for the Ligue 1 club last term, projecting him onto the radars of Europe’s top sides.

Liverpool, who won the Champions League last season, were said to have already spoken to Lille about the 24-year-old, but they would almost certainly need to break the bank and smash their own transfer record after Inter’s huge offer.

Jurgen Klopp would have to go back on his words from May

Back in May, the former Borussia Dortmund said: “I don’t think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever. The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them all together and then stay together for a while.”

Judging by these words, Klopp ruled out spending any huge amounts of money this summer on his squad. This theory has been backed up by Bleacher Report, claiming John W. Henry is prepared to back Klopp during the transfer window, but the Liverpool boss doesn’t want to spend that much.

The aforementioned report from L’Equipe states that the German is a huge fan of Pepe, but he will almost definitely have to spend big now in order to land the dangerous forward after Inter’s large bid.

If he did go ahead and do so, he would be performing a major U-turn on his words from May which suggested that Liverpool wouldn’t be making any astronomical moves in the market this summer.

Then again, Klopp does have some history here. As reported by BBC Sport, after declaring he’d quit football if transfer fees like Paul Pogba’s became commonplace, Liverpool invested huge sums in Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, leading Klopp to admit to a change of opinion.

Maybe Klopp will change his mind in pursuit of Pepe as well.

Sheffield United: Wilder should consider permanent move for Kieran Dowell

With the dust having settled on Sheffield United’s fantastic Championship campaign, Chris Wilder will now be keen to build towards prolonging the club’s stay in the Premier League.

Yet in order to do so, it is imperative that he brings in several quality additions to Bramall Lane when the transfer window opens in July.

Although he already has a strong squad at his disposal, Wilder could benefit significantly from bringing in Kieran Dowell on a permanent deal this summer. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Blades are reportedly weighing up a move for the 21-year-old with Huddersfield Town also monitoring his situation at Everton.

Having joined the Blades on loan from the Toffees in January, the midfielder showed glimmers of his talent during the second half of the 2018/19 season, providing crucial contributions against West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa.

A perfect player for Wilder’s 3-5-2 system, Dowell produced encouraging performances both in the central positions as well as on the wing and therefore would bring some much-needed versatility to United.

Whereas it is fair to say that he did have his troubles with consistency during his 5-month stint with the Blades, there is no reason why Dowell cannot develop into a fantastic player under the guidance of Wilder and his assistant Alan Knill.

Already an England under-21 international, the £2.7m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) clearly has all the ingredients needed to thrive at the top level in order to fulfil his potential, he may have to leave Goodison Park.

Since graduating from Everton’s academy in 2014, Dowell has only made five starts for the club in all competitions and with the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin all ahead of him in the pecking order, he could surely be attracted towards a move to United.

Although it will be far from cheap to secure the services of the midfielder, it is well worth the risk for the Blades as he could prove to be the difference between relegation and survival next season.

What do you think United fans? Would you welcome a summer swoop for Dowell? Could he thrive under the guidance of Wilder next season? Get in touch below.

Leeds fans excited by the prospect of Sunjic

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are excited after news emerged that their club had bid for Croatia international Ivan Sunjic.

The Daily Mail wrote a report stating that the Yorkshire club had bid for the midfielder, but the Whites also face competition from Birmingham City for his signature.

The Yorkshire club have apparently highlighted him as a potential Kalvin Phillips replacement with the 23-year-old continuing to be linked with a move to Aston Villa this summer.

The Croatian looks like he could have what it takes to replace the Englishman in Marcelo Bielsa’s system.

The youngster is a Europa League regular, having appeared eight times in the competition last term.

Aged just 22, he could be the type of player Marcelo Bielsa wants to work his magic on, and understandably the prospect of signing a Europa League level midfielder has excited a number of United supporters.

Aston Villa would make a big error by signing Phillips for £30m

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Aston Villa’s pursuit of Kalvin Phillips has taken a massive blow according to The Sun, who claim Leeds have now slapped a £30m price tag on the defensive midfielder’s head.

What’s the word?

After releasing Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan, Villa are crying out for some steel to be added to their midfield.

Earlier this month The Telegraph reported that the Villans were eyeing a £14m deal for Phillips, but that situation has now changed according to The Sun.

They’ve suggested that Leeds are demanding £30m for him as Villa look to be priced out of a deal.

Only last week the club were linked with another defensive midfielder, Marvelous Nakamba.

Costly blunder

The fact of the matter is that if Villa cave into Leeds’ demands they’d be making a huge blunder.

Dean Smith’s men have already broken their transfer record to land Wesley this summer for £22m so a deal for Phillips would eclipse that by £8m.

Is it really worth it? Arguably not.

The Leeds man featured 44 times last season but at the top end of the game he’s still very much an unproven talent, having never played in the Premier League. To blow their transfer record out of the water, therefore, would be extremely questionable.

There is no denying the talent that Phillips has and his versatility of being able to play in defence too would be beneficial.

However, to potentially pay £30m for someone who has been playing in the Championship would be bordering on the ridiculous.

The Zimbabwe Chronicle reported last week that Villa could pay £20m for Club Brugge’s Nakamba and given his performances in Europe last season, it would represent a far better deal.

Although he’s never played in England, he’s proven himself at the highest level, starring in draws against Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund and in a 4-0 win over Monaco in the Champions League. In that fixture he made a remarkable seven successful tackles.

Therefore, Villa must switch their focus to Nakamba, rather than being drawn into a £30m error.

The Zimbabwe international has performed at the highest level, whereas the Leeds midfielder has not.

Leeds fans debate what should be the next step for Jay-Roy Grot

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are split as to what the club should do with Jay-Roy Grot next season.

The Dutchman spent last season out on loan in his home country at VVV-Venlo where he has been quite impressive.

He scored six goals and created three assists for teammates in the Eredivisie during his loan spell, and that has prompted Leeds fans to wonder if he should return next season.

He didn’t reach those types of levels when he pulled on the famous white shirt of Leeds during his first season at the club where he scored only once in 20 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit.

Aged just 21 there is plenty of time for the youngster to develop as a player, and while some supporters want to see him given a chance next season others want him to go out on loan again.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Resilient: The obstacles that Divock Origi has overcome to become a Liverpool hero

[ad_pod ]

Football is about comebacks, character, resilience and drive.

These traits can get a player to levels that their talent shouldn’t normally see them reach. It can make a player who is far from world class become a cult hero at a club, and that is exactly what has happened to Divock Origi at Liverpool.

The Belgian arrived at Anfield as a skinny, unassuming young striker who had played only one full season of professional football when Liverpool splashed out £10m to sign him, before loaning him back to Lille for the following campaign.

He has since scored goals that will go down in the club’s history and will live long in the memories of Liverpool supporters, but it hasn’t always been plain sailing for the man who wears the No.27 shirt at Anfield.

Let’s take a look at some of the setbacks that Origi has had to overcome throughout his Liverpool career…

Voted into Ligue 1’s Worst Team of the Season

At the end of his first season as a Liverpool player – despite not pulling on the shirt yet – Origi was named in L’Equipe’s Ligue 1 Worst Team of the Season.

This unfortunate incident happened after his campaign on loan at Lille. Having signed for the Reds in the previous summer, he went on a 20-game goal drought and scored just eight goals in 33 league appearances.

Humiliated by Wolfsburg

In what was Origi’s second spell away from Anfield on a loan deal, he suffered yet another setback, this time in the Bundesliga.

The Belgian signed for Wolfsburg in the summer of 2017, and started off well with four goals in his first nine league appearances. However, things quickly went sour.

After Martin Schmidt replaced Andries Jonker and Origi was moved from a central position to the right-wing, his form nosedived.

He managed just one goal in his last 17 games, but was humiliated after being subbed off with just 42 minutes on the clock in a 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim.

Origi’s father later revealed that his son was ‘very disappointed after the game.’

Transfer listed by Liverpool

The Reds may not have added a sixth major European Cup to their trophy cabinet if someone had submitted a suitable offer for Origi.

The Merseysiders were reportedly willing to listen to offers for their seemingly surplus to requirements frontman, but after no such bid arrived, the 24-year-old knuckled down and eventually played a humongous role in their 2018/19 season.
