Wes Durston's hundred in vain as Alex Hales stars

Half-centuries from Alex Hales and Samit Patel eclipsed a brilliant hundred from Wes Durston as the Nottinghamshire romped past Derbyshire by five wickets with three overs to spare

11-Jun-2010

ScorecardHalf-centuries from Alex Hales and Samit Patel eclipsed a brilliant hundred from Wes Durston as the Nottinghamshire romped past Derbyshire by five wickets with three overs to spare. Durston hit 111 off 59 balls, with seven sixes and 11 fours for the first century of this season’s Friends Provident t20, as the Trent Bridge visitors amassed an intimidating 192 for six.But Hales smashed 69 from just 25 balls – including three sixes and 11 fours – in partnership with Ali Brown as Nottinghamshire raced to 99 off the first seven overs of their reply before both batsmen fell in consecutive overs. Patel ensured there was no chance of the momentum being lost with a classy innings containing seven fours and three more sixes and was there at the close to complete the victory, finishing on 62 not out.Former Somerset batsman Durston had earned himself a short-term contract with Derbyshire after a terrific hundred for the Unicorns against Sussex in the Clydesdale Bank 40 earlier in the season and the 29-year-old demonstrated all his talents in commendable style. In partnership with South African Loots Bosman, who made 39, Durston got the visitors off to a great start before Bosman was bowled by Steven Mullaney in the eighth over to break the partnership. While the home bowlers kept a tight rein on the other Derbyshire batsmen, Durston continued to find the boundary at will, including a reverse-swept six off Patel before being run out in the 18th over.Despite being asked to chase down their sixth highest total in Twenty20, Notts openers Hales and Brown blitzed the powerplay overs with a stunning display of hitting. Hales, 21, dominated the strike and brought up his fifty with a pulled six off Garry Park in the fifth over off his 16th delivery – the fifth fastest Twenty20 half-century ever – to set the platform for the win.He was eventually bowled by Robin Peterson but Patel showed plenty of class to hit the Derbyshire spinners repeatedly into the gaps over cover, finishing proceedings by taking 15 off the third over from seamer Steffan Jones – who conceded 53 in three overs.

Gambhir to miss tour game in Canberra for personal reasons

Manjrekar: ‘India’s selection calls made cricketing sense’

India will be without head coach Gautam Gambhir when they take on the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra in a two-day tour game starting on November 30. Gambhir has left the team to be in India for personal reasons. A BCCI source confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Gambhir will be back with the team before the next Test, which will be a day-night match in Adelaide starting on December 6. The tour game in Canberra will be a day-night match played with the pink Kookaburra ball.India lead the series 1-0 after they made a stunning comeback from being whitewashed 3-0 at home by New Zealand. Assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel will collectively be in charge in Gambhir’s absence.Related

  • India lay down the gauntlet to Australia with 295-run thrashing

Just as Gambhir left, India were bolstered by the return of the full-time captain, Rohit Sharma, who had been on paternity leave during the first Test. Rohit’s return into the XI could lead to a tricky question around the combination as in his absence, KL Rahul made a successful return to the top of the order in difficult conditions. If Shubman Gill, who missed the Perth Test with a fractured thumb, also makes it back to full fitness, India will have to free up two places in the batting line-up. There is no update yet on Gill’s recovery as there is time to go to the next match. He will likely miss the tour game with assessments becoming more regular as the training days and the Adelaide Test approach.

Pré e pós-jogo, Grêmio protestou contra sequência do Gauchão

Após cruzamento, Caio abriu o marcador do time gaúcho.

Door not shut on Watson – Lehmann

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has insisted that Shane Watson’s Test career is not over after he was replaced by Mitchell Marsh for the second Ashes Test

Daniel Brettig at Lord's16-Jul-2015Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has insisted that Shane Watson’s Test career is not over despite being replaced by Mitchell Marsh for the critical Lord’s Test.Lehmann stated that Watson had only narrowly won selection for the first Test at Cardiff, and after a poor match in which he was twice out cheaply lbw and was unable to take a wicket, the selectors decided the younger Marsh deserved a chance having made two centuries in the warm-up matches.”Obviously Shane has been a little bit disappointing with his runs and it’s a tight call,” Lehmann said before play on day one. “He’s been an experienced player for us. Mitch Marsh has done everything we could ask for behind scenes and first two tour games he’s in good form.”Tight call first Test, we went with experience, this Test we’ve gone with Mitch Marsh. Tough call on Shane but I’m sure he’s got plenty of cricket left in him.”Many have concluded this decision marks the end of Watson’s time in the Test side, but Lehmann said the allrounder could still win his way back into the XI on this tour if he presses a hard enough case in the remaining tour matches. Lehmann drew parallels with the World Cup earlier this year, when Watson was dropped for Marsh midway through the tournament and then reinstated.”I think it’s a case of him getting back and obviously got a county game next week he’ll play in and try find some form back and keep putting his name in front of selectors,” Lehmann said. “A chance very much like the World Cup where he got dropped and came back into side, so really form will dictate what Shane does.”Whatever happens in Watson’s Test match future, he remains a central player in the ODI and Twenty20 teams, meaning he is likely to be around the national squads for some time yet. With Mitchell Starc passed fit, the Australians made two changes to the team for Lord’s, also bringing in wicketkeeper Peter Nevill for his Test debut in place of the unavailable Brad Haddin. Nevill’s cap was presented to him by a fellow New South Welshman in Steve Waugh.”Player 443 for us and gets his cap presented by Steve Waugh, one of the greats of the game,” Lehmann said. “We wish him a great and long career.”

Clarke shrugs off latest selection issue

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke hinted at some confusion within the team over Shane Watson’s omission and rapid recall from the World Cup team across games against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka

Daniel Brettig at the SCG08-Mar-20151:55

‘Our attitude was to take wickets’ – Clarke

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke hinted at some confusion within the team over Shane Watson’s omission and rapid recall from the World Cup team across games against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, and said a squad mentality would be critical should the national selectors continue to shuffle their deck according to the prevailing conditions.Watson was left out against Afghanistan and appeared likely to be on the sidelines for some time when his prime No. 3 spot in the batting order was handed over to Steven Smith. But a dry SCG surface and the decision to choose Xavier Doherty instead of a third seamer pitched him back into the team in the recently unfamiliar role of a No. 6 batsman, where he prospered alongside Glenn Maxwell.Clarke has long avoided commenting on selection, ever since he excused himself from a formal role on the panel in the first half of 2013, but his rueful laugh and long sigh at the start of a response to questions about the Watson shuffle said as much as any words could about the sequence of the past few days. The coach Darren Lehmann and the selector on duty Mark Waugh waited until match day to conclude that Watson and Doherty would play.”I’m not going there,” Clarke said before making a fishing gesture. “The selectors pick the players, and my job is to try to get the best out of the 11 players. So no chance am I getting hold of that hook. I thought the selectors made it pretty clear that they were horses for courses in regard to selection today, they went for the extra experience with Watto in the bowling department only playing two frontline fast bowlers, so that was a big part of why they made that call … but good question.”I thought Shane played really well. His batting was how we know Watto can bat. He’s got amazing power and I think he played a big part in helping set the game up, that partnership with Maxy and him. Then he held his nerve under pressure with the ball as well. That was a real test for us out there, as games continue to move forward we’re going to be under pressure and I felt the way all the bowlers held their nerve today was exceptional.”Consultation between a captain and the selectors has long been a point of discussion in Australian cricket. Ricky Ponting had no formal selection role but seldom got a team he did not prefer, but since he stepped down from the panel Clarke has been at odds with Lehmann, Waugh, Trevor Hohns and the chairman Rod Marsh more than once. Asked whether he needed a more open line, Clarke answered carefully.”I think it’s exactly how it’s been since I stood down from being a selector,” he said. “It’s been very consistent the whole way through. I think when I was a selector there was a lot more stuff over email and the phone in regard to communication but since I’ve stood down it’s been exactly the same.”It’s the squad that wins you tournaments, not just the 11 players. We had a completely different team in Perth and we made a world record score. So whatever 11 players the selectors decide to pick for the conditions and against the opposition, everyone will be ready to play.”The summer has been a vexing one for Clarke, and having made his first substantial score since suffering the hamstring injury that required surgery after the first Test against India in early December, he also spoke at some length about his dealings with the media. It was in response to a broader question about how he managed to handle the stress of this season.”I don’t feel stress from what people write or say,” he said. “It might have taken me a few years but I think I’ve slowly learned to ignore a lot of it and laugh at a lot of it, and I think that’s probably the only reason I’m still playing this game at the highest level. When I was a lot younger I probably took a lot more to heart. I think I’m pretty honest with a lot of the journalist who I feel are out of line or criticise me for something that’s not true.”I’ll generally front the journalist and ask why it’s been said and voice my opinion, as I’m sure a few of the journos in this room have experienced. But I also understand that people have jobs to do, they have to sell newspapers, there’s channels on TV that are fighting for viewers. So I understand and respect that’s part and parcel of sport at the highest level, and I think if you cannot take it personally that’s been the best thing for me. Sometimes it’s hard but you’ve got to do your best.”
