McDermott named Australia's bowling coach

Craig McDermott has pipped his old pace rival Allan Donald and the little-known Allister de Winter to become Australia’s pace bowling coach, replacing Troy Cooley

Daniel Brettig12-May-2011Craig McDermott pipped his old pace rival Allan Donald to be the man charged with shepherding Australia’s pace bowlers after they slipped to innocuous depths during the Ashes. The appointment of Troy Cooley’s replacement was announced in Brisbane on Thursday after Michael Brown, Cricket Australia’s head of cricket operations, had completed his final round of interviews.”It’s great to be back as part of the Australian team set-up again and I can’t wait to get started working with the bowlers and the rest of the team,” McDermott said. “We’ve got some challenging tours ahead in the coming months but I’m excited at the opportunity to be part of the group that helps get Australia back to number one in all forms of cricket.”McDermott wasted little time identifying the potentially explosive but more often wayward Mitchell Johnson as a key to the Australian team’s fortunes. Johnson maintained a very close relationship with Cooley, but the countless hours they spent together did not always result in fruitful spells on the field.”I thought Mitchell had his head in a really good space in Bangladesh,” McDermott said. “If he can get it together he’s like no other bowler we’ve got in the country. His arm speed is phenomenal and when he gets it right, he’s unplayable. He was working on a couple of things in Bangladesh and if he gets it right he will bowl well and he’ll be around for a long time.”In the 15 years since his retirement from international cricket in 1996, McDermott has tried various pursuits, not all of them successful. But in recent times he had worked as a pace bowling coach at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, and was taken to Bangladesh as interim pace bowling coach for Australia’s short tour in April, where he gelled successfully with the players.”Not everything is a quick fix. It’s a long-term thing. Certainly I’d like to put an emphasis on that part of our bowling,” McDermott said of encouraging Australia’s bowlers to pursue a fuller length. “If you pitch it up you’re a much better chance of getting lbws, caught behinds and clean bowleds.”We’ve got more than enough (bowling) depth for Australia to be top in all three forms of the game. It’s a challenging time but I enjoy a challenge.”McDermott was chosen out of an initial field that included Jason Gillespie and Andy Bichel in addition to Donald and the little-known Allister de Winter, with his previous involvement in the Australian system a major selling point. A long and successful Test career, in which he took 291 wickets across 71 matches and excelled in a wide variety of conditions, also helped.”His impressive record as an international player, during which he successfully overcame a number of setbacks, combined with his recent record at the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence and with the Australia team in Bangladesh, all impressed us that he was the outstanding candidate for this role,” said Brown. “He will provide valuable support to the new Test Captain, Michael Clarke, coach Tim Nielsen, and the playing group.”Justin Langer, retained as batting coach the same day McDermott was appointed, quantified the Queenslander’s value.”He had an unbelievable work ethic when he played,” Langer told . “He played in an era with some great players and also a tough era. He went through the AB times and the Bobby Simpson times. That experience will be invaluable.”I think he’ll also bring quite a worldliness to the group, because he obviously went away from the cricket scene for some time and had varying degrees of fortune in his business life. He’ll bring that worldliness to the group, which I think is pretty invaluable in this day and age.”Often young professionals now, they gain this change-room existence where they come in and they become professional cricketers and all they really get to know is the change-room and their team-mates. I think any outside sources or influences who can talk to them about life after cricket and about being a good person off the field, or the different challenges that come with being a professional cricketer and the rewards that come with that, will be valuable.”Donald is now likely to remain with New Zealand where he had begun a fruitful relationship with the national side during the World Cup, while de Winter will go back to preparing the Tasmanian pace attack for their tilt at defending the Sheffield Shield title.

Guardiola reportedly agrees new Man City deal

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola could be set for an extended stay in English football, according to the latest reports…

What’s the word?

As per The Sun, the serial-winning coach has ‘agreed in principle’ a deal with the club to stay at the Etihad beyond his current contract, with his existing deal having been set to expire next summer.

There had been speculation that the 51-year-old – who replaced Manuel Pellegrini in the dugout in 2016 – could walk away when that contract comes to an end, although this latest revelation would seemingly quash such rumours, with the former Barcelona boss set to agree to a two-year extension, with the option of an extra 12 months.

The report also suggests that the £370k-per-week man committing his future to the club could also be key in ensuring the arrival of Borussia Dortmund starlet Erling Haaland this summer, with the Norwegian having been heavily linked with a switch to the Premier League powerhouse.

Rivals will be terrified

The timing of this news is intriguing in the sense that it was only a matter of days ago that title contenders Liverpool confirmed long-serving manager Jurgen Klopp had agreed to a two-year extension himself, with Guardiola seemingly keen to keep the relentless tussle between the two managerial heavyweights running beyond next season.

The two elite sides are currently going toe-to-toe at the summit of the table and could also meet in what would be an enthralling Champions League final showdown, with both sides having run out winners in their respective semi-final, first-leg ties.

To have two sides of such quality – led by two such impressive figures – battling it out both in Europe and domestically is a fantastic advert for the Premier League, with it looking likely that this intense rivalry will continue over the coming years.

As for their rivals, however, these contract extensions will have come as something of a body blow, particularly for struggling outfit Manchester United, with club legend Gary Neville previously admitting that the Red Devils may have to wait for both Klopp and Guardiola to depart before they can even contemplate ending their title drought.

In recent times, however, even the Merseysiders have struggled to keep pace with a rampant City side, with the current league leaders having claimed three of the last four league titles, notably becoming the first side to break the 1o0-point barrier during the 2017/18 campaign.

Dubbed a “genius” by Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, Guardiola has been instrumental in maintaining his side’s consistent pursuit of silverware, while he has also proven pivotal in re-shaping the English game with his tactical acumen and managerial approach, having had a “massive influence” on clubs up and down the country, according to Brighton manager Graham Potter.

Despite reports that he could well be in line for the Brazil national team job following the Qatar World Cup this winter, it looks as if the City boss is here to stay – something that will be a point of concern for the chasing pack.

Lockerbie ousted as USACA chief executive

Don Lockerbie has been relieved of his position as chief executive of the USA Cricket Association with immediate

Martin Williamson21-Nov-2010Don Lockerbie has been relieved of his position as chief executive of the USA Cricket Association with immediate effect hours before a board meeting in Florida, according to sources inside US cricket. The news comes a little over a week after the resignation of Nabeel Ahmed, the first vice-president of USACA.While nobody was prepared to confirm the report, it follows several months of increasing concern that Lockerbie’s bullish promises about changes he was going to make to the game in the USA had come to nothing. The board’s finances remain a concern, and despite official denials it is widely believed the ill-fated tournament in Florida in May featuring New Zealand and Sri Lanka landed USACA with considerable losses.Lockerbie had a reputation of being someone big on talk but far more reluctant to address media inquiries about the more questionable aspects of USACA’s operations. He took up his role in April 2009 and quickly unveiled ambitious plans to turn US cricket professional and stage an IPL-type tournament in the country. But despite strong support from the ICC his plans failed to materialise, and in recent months there has been growing discontent within the USA which appears to have cost Lockerbie his position. While few will lament his departure, it does raise the grim spectre of the USA sliding back into the murky shambles that led to its suspension from the ICC in 2005.
