Celtic fans could rest easy if Charles Herrmann-Jesaja came in as a Weah replacement

Celtic fans recently said goodbye to one of their more impressive young loanees soon in Timothy Weah. The young American striker has proved to be very good when he’s played and a lack of game time for the striker has been frustrating for the fans. However, if this report from Turkish-Football is true they could have a perfect replacement.

The Bhoys are reportedly interested in Wolfsburg’s young 19-year-old striker Charles-Jesaja-Herrmann and if they can get the young German, who has impressed at youth levels for his country as well as his club, then it will be as if they never lost Timo Weah in the first place. Goals have flown freely for the young Wolfsburg man, and with 19 combined goals and assists this season, he’d be perfect at Parkhead.

According to the article, it may be tough for the Bhoys to get this one wrapped up as Celtic will be set to do battle with both Newcastle and Everton for his signature, as well as interest from Turkey. The chances are that Wolfsburg will not be keen on letting their young sensation leave cheaply so Celtic could be the perfect destination, as they’d be able to offer a loan option for the striker knowing he’d play.

At the age of 19, it is so important that Jesaja-Herrmann is treated right wherever he goes and if that means going on loan to get a taste of the more robust brand of football on offer in Scotland then so be it. The Bhoys have got a talented squad, but the level of football north of the border can be brutish at times, and it would be a good lesson for the young striker.

His combination of 19 goals and assists this season is mightily impressive as he tears up the German youth league. Goals have flown freely and he’s also helped to chip in wish assists when needed, and it really is no surprise to see so many top clubs eyeing up a move for the young German hitman. It would come as no shock to see him put Weah’s goal return to shame and the Bhoys will be keen to see just that if he does find himself at Parkhead on-loan or permanently next season.

Between The Lines: Kevin McCabe’s comments may not be as positive as first thought

[ad_pod ]

Despite a seemingly positive update from their chairman regarding the club’s transfer budget, Sheffield United fans may have reason to be worried about their team’s chances in the Premier League next season.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, co-owner Kevin McCabe has echoed Chris Wilder’s sentiment that the squad doesn’t need a huge turnover, which may show a lack of ambition.

What’s been said then?

The chairman has promised the fans and the manager a decent sized transfer budget, but how it is spent may not be very ambitious.

“Let’s just say it’ll be a healthy one. We’re not in the Premier League for fun and when you play in any market, you can’t buck it.” McCabe said.

“So it’s about considering everything carefully. We’re not going to be rash, we’re not going to be stupid.

“We’ve got to plan in the Premier League to have a nucleus of a squad that will maintain its position, but that if we did come on hard times, we wouldn’t go down with a massive, massive tumble.”

How can this be interpreted?

It seems that Sheffield United will approach this transfer window in a similar way to Cardiff this time last year.

Rather than signing huge names on big wages, the Welsh club brought in a batch of reliable players who would be happy to stay with the club whichever league they’re in.

McCabe saying that the squad needs a nucleus of players who will stay if the team are relegated shows that the Blades may not reach for the stars in terms of their signings.

The club may opt to bring in solid individuals who have a chance of keeping if they drop back down into the Championship.

This doesn’t always work well in terms of staying in the Premier League, but it allows the Blades to not overextend themselves, leaving them with a strong squad in the second tier if they can’t beat the drop.

Liverpool: Jordan Henderson’s impact on the team is as strong as ever

Jordan Henderson might have been relegated to substitute at Liverpool this season, but his impact has never been larger.

His match-sealing goal against Southampton on Friday night put the Reds a step closer to Premier League glory, and his emotional celebration made the fans remember that their club captain is in it to win it this season.

Henderson might have been demoted to the bench due to the emergence of Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum establishing themselves as first-team midfielders, but Jurgen Klopp himself has claimed that his importance on the first-team is even stronger than ever.

The Liverpool manager even said after the 3-1 win that Henderson has done well in replacing legend Steven Gerrard at the club, saying, “The most difficult job in the last 500 years of football was to replace Steven Gerrard.

“In the mind of the people it was like if it’s not Stevie, then it’s not good enough, and he has dealt with that outstandingly well so he can be really proud. Now we have to think of the future and he is a very important part of our team.”

Henderson’s importance can be understandable when you look at his appearance stats in the league this season. The Liverpool skipper has only failed to come on the pitch once when he has been involved with the squad this campaign, starting 18 and coming on as sub 11 times.

Fans, for the remainder of the season at least, will want to see Henderson remain on the bench for players who bring more urgency and quality to the team, but in their captain they know they have a player who makes as big as an impact on the squad than anyone else, and that nobody in the club is as suited to wear the armband as the man who was picked to succeed Gerrard at the club.

Liverpool fans, has this been Henderson’s best season? Let us know!

Unpopular Opinion: Mamadou Sakho is more important than Wilfried Zaha

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace’s miserable couple of weeks continued as they crashed out of the Fa Cup quarter-final, compounding the heartache felt after their loss at the hands of bitter rivals Brighton in the fixture which preceded their trip to Vicarage Road.

Just as they did against the Hornets, the Eagles fought back from one down to level the score before letting it slip in the late stages, with Andre Gray netting in the 79th minute to see the Hornets through to Wembley.

While there was nothing much to be done about the latter strike, Palace will surely feel they should have done better with Gray’s winner.

Luka Milivojevic had spotted the speedster’s run but, in the second he looked away, the Serb lost his man and Gray was allowed to tap home from seven yards out. It was, admittedly, a great ball from Roberto Pereyra but there was nothing else on for the Argentine and Gray’s run should certainly have been followed.

Palace might have been without the influential Wilfried Zaha for this game but it’s difficult to speculate if the outcome would have  been any different if the Ivorian was involved.

The number 11 has been in great form for Palace in recent weeks, scoring five goals in his last seven games, and he was undoubtedly a big loss to Palace in the Watford clash, which he missed due to injury.

In a fantastic string of displays, Zaha’s performance against Brighton is a stain – the speedster got little joy down the left flank, with Martin Montoya effectively dealing with the enormous threat posed. The Eagles had a full strength front-line in that game and struggled to break down their deep-sat opposition – their defence, though, was not at full health.

Mamadou Sakho has missed the last four games in all competitions through injury and looks set to see out the rest of the season on the sidelines – the Frenchman has been and will continue to be a massive loss for the Croydon outfit.

His spider-like dribbles out from the back might give the Palace faithful heart attacks now and then but there is no doubt that the 29-year-old galvanises the defence and instils a confidence in his teammates that the deputies cannot.

Scott Dann and Martin Kelly have taken turns to step in alongside James Tomkins since Sakho took to the treatment room but neither have the former Liverpool defender’s calming influence.

Palace’s attack – of which Zaha is the key man – has long been perceived their saving grace, but the partnership struck up by Tomkins and Sakho, combined with the ever-improving Aaron Wan-Bissaka and bargain buy van Aanholt, means the Eagles surely have one of, if not the, best defences outside of the top six.

The ‘pride of south London’ kept four clean sheets in a spectacular run of form at the end of last season in which they lost just once in their final eight games and a back line containing Sakho at the core was a huge part of that.

Zaha is widely regarded as Palace’s most important player but, in the last 180 minutes alone, Sakho has laid down a strong claim to take that mantle away – the sooner he returns to action the better.

Opinion: Manchester City win puts them in best frame of mind to cement Premier League title

Manchester City gobbled up the first big trophy of the season as they saw off Chelsea on penalties in somewhat dour affair at Wembley.

Some last minute controversy involving goalkeeper Kepa and manager Mauro Sarri overshadowed the game really, and the incident just threw more disdain on a situation at Chelsea which is already being bleakly observed by those from afar.

However, the win for City on the otherhand tells a different story, and should give Pep Guardiola’s men the confidence they need to go ahead into the rest of the season and capture the Premier League title.

Winning trophies is a habit, and no matter what the prize, it’s always good to be involved in picking up silverware and ensuring that winning does indeed become something which comes as a given for the players involved with the club.

The Sunday could prove a turning point too, with City’s closest title rivals Liverpool being held to another dour 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

It could represent a big swing in momentum in the title picture in general, as City once again add another trophy to the cabinet while Liverpool look on axiously and wonder what might have been this season given the lead they once held at the top.

It’s City who are now in the asendency though, and with their form, momentum, and winning habits firmly back on track, it really could be City’s title to lose now, not Liverpool’s.

Klich must lose his place against Swansea for his own good

[ad_pod ]

Leeds had to score the latest goal in the club’s history to rescue a point on Saturday, and going into Wednesday’s clash against Swansea there is one major change required in the centre of the park.

Unsurprisingly, Leeds dominated the ball at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, racking up 69 per cent of the possession.

The hosts took the lead through Lewis Wing though, and it wasn’t until the 101st minute that Leeds equalised, with Kalvin Phillips glancing in from close range after a header by Liam Cooper.

Despite the scenes in stoppage time, it will be hugely concerning to Marcelo Bielsa that his side produced just four shots on target for all their control of the game, and it may be time for Mateusz Klich to get a rest.

The Polish international was nothing short of sensational in the first half of the season. After being cast out on loan in the last campaign, he grabbed five goals and five assists by the beginning of November to kick off his 2018-19 season with a bang and become an instant Elland Road favourite.

Since then though, the popular midfielder has scored just twice – a brace at Rotherham – and also provided one assist.

He was ineffectual in the match against Middlesbrough, touching the ball just 37 times, the third-least of any Leeds starter, and registering just one shot, which didn’t hit the target.

Klich is in the team to create and score goals, so failing to muster a single shot on target, successful dribble or key pass is a major concern. Put simply, the 28 year-old appears to be running out of gas having racked up nearly 3,000 minutes of football already this season.

It is perhaps unsurprising then that the Whites’ attacking production has fallen off since the turn of the year, as their best attacking midfielder is not performing to the level he was before.

Bielsa’s side welcome a Swansea side to Elland Road on Wednesday night that haven’t kept an away clean sheet in the league since November, but Klich should watch this one from the side-lines.

Sunderland set to land left wing-back Declan John on loan

Sunderland are closing in on their first signing of Deadline Day as Swansea City wing-back Declan John appears to be very close to joining on loan.According to Phil Smith at the Sunderland Echo, the 24-year-old is on the verge of signing for the remainder of the season as Phil Parkinson looks to bolster his defensive ranks. He tweeted:

John will arrive with a wealth of experience at both domestic and international level.

The Welshman has been capped seven times for Ryan Giggs’ Dragons whilst he has also featured in the Scottish Premier League – making 26 appearances for Rangers and in the Championship for his parent club, the Swans, where he has made 33 outings, per Transfermarkt.

What could’ve been… Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

It could be the first of several incomings at the Stadium of Light with less than eight hours remaining before the transfer deadline with Bristol City striker Antoine Semenyo looking likely to join per TEAMtalk.

Denver Hume has played the majority of the season on the left-hand side, starting 21 matches. He has provided three assists and even got on the scoresheet once, via WhoScored.

Leeds fans react as Douglas ruled out for 2-3 weeks

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds fans have been reacting to yet another injury setback, as Barry Douglas is expected to miss around two to three weeks with a muscle injury.

Leeds will go five points clear at the top of the table if they can overcome Derby County on Friday, but they will have to do it without one of their main summer signings.

Douglas, who has racked up three Championship assists since joining from Wolves, will miss around three weeks with the injury he sustained at Nottingham Forest, Phil Hay reports.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden was at the crucial relegation 6-pointer between Bolton and Rotherham. Check out the video below…

The Whites are already without Liam Cooper and Gateano Berardi at the back, and will now expect to face Derby, Stoke City and Rotherham without Douglas.

The Scottish international has not been in great form recently anyway, but it is still a huge setback to lose yet another first team defender at such a crucial point in the season.

The boss will presumably now offer Leif Davis the chance to redeem himself after a poor performance in the FA Cup, and he will have to be at his very best against Derby’s Harry Wilson.
