Southampton missed out on Takehiro Tomiyasu

Southampton reportedly bid for Takehiro Tomiyasu in January but were unable to agree a deal, and with the Japan international now heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, it seems that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side may have missed out on a gem.

According to the Evening Standard, the Saints made an offer for the Bologna man in January and returned the following month to enquire about a potential summer switch, but it was thought that a bigger move was on the cards for the 22-year-old.

It now seems likely that the Japanese centre-back will complete a move to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side this summer, with Spurs in talks with the Serie A outfit over a potential deal for the defender.

Last season saw the youngster make 31 appearances in Serie A for the Rossoblù, contributing two goals and averaging a solid 6.77 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

The £18m-rated defender has featured regularly as a centre-back, right-back and defensive midfielder in his career thus far, and given Hasenhuttl’s preference for versatile players at Southampton, it seems clear that he could have been a stellar addition.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

It is no surprise that the Austrian was reportedly keen on the Japan international in January when you consider that he was forced to deploy James Ward-Prowse and Jan Bednarek at right-back in the absence of Kyle Walker-Peters after Yan Valery was sent out on loan to Birmingham.

Tomiyasu could have been a great player to compete with Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard at centre-back, whilst also covering for Walker-Peters on the right, as he has plenty of experience in Serie A despite being so young.

His performances in Italy earned him the praise of teammate Mitchell Dijks, who said: “He is very strong, a real Japanese warrior.”

After their advances in January and February were rejected, it seems unlikely that Southampton will be able to negotiate a deal for Tomiyasu this summer. If he does join Spurs and become a success, then he will unfortunately be regarded as one who got away for the Saints.

Batting test ahead for England on last day against Otago

England’s batsmen will have a definite chance for exoneration if the weather gods are kind to them on the last day of their National Bank tour match with Otago at Queenstown’s Events Centre tomorrow

Lynn McConnell03-Mar-2002England’s batsmen will have a definite chance for exoneration if the weather gods are kind to them on the last day of their National Bank tour match with Otago at Queenstown’s Events Centre tomorrow.Due to the extended hours caused by loss of play today, there could be a minimum of 105 overs to be played, and with Otago finishing day two only three runs behind England’s first innings total there is every chance of, at the best a lively finish and at the least, a lengthy batting display from England’s Test contenders.England were dismissed for 153 and by stumps, Otago were 150/6, the main note of satisfaction being the bowling of Andy Caddick, Andrew Flintoff and Craig White.Caddick especially, after being dropped from the one-day side after the first match against New Zealand, made the most of his chance. He took four for 42 from his 18 overs. He bowled seven overs before finally finding his rhythm, a significant step in the side’s preparation for the first Test starting next week.”It took me about seven overs to really hit my straps and get myself going but it finally came through and in the last few overs I got myself back into rhythm,” Caddick said.”I was struggling to get my rhythm going, trying this, trying that to get it clicked in,” he said.”I’m looking forward just continuing bowling for the next couple of days,” he said.Conditions would be better for England batting a second time as the pitch had dried out and wasn’t moving as much off it, although there was still some swing in the air.”I missed out on the one-dayers and that was my sort of training ground for the Test matches coming up but that happens,” Caddick said.”Matthew Hoggard did a great job in the one-dayers but not it is my turn to get stuck in for the Tests.”You can bowl in the nets as much as you want but when you are bowling against the opposition and totally different batsmen than your team-mates, it does help to get out there and bowl against them,” he said. The start to England’s day which saw 75 overs bowled, was notable mainly for some lower order substance to their batting, provided by Warren Hegg and Richard Dawson. They added 43 runs for the eighth wicket before Otago’s man of the moment, Craig Pryor had Hegg caught at second slip by Simon Beare for 32, and the dismissal was repeated next ball when James Ormond produced a copy cat shot.Dawson hit out with Caddick as his last batting partner and 22 runs were added before Caddick was finally out, caught at second slip by Nathan Morland for six while Dawson was not out 24, scored off 39 balls.Pryor proved the destroyer for Otago and ended the innings with the fourth five wicket bag of his career, taking five for 45 from his 12 overs.Caddick said the benefits to England of his missing the one-day games had been Hoggard’s acquisition of experience that would be put to use in the side’s future.”My spot was taken by a young man who’s come in and he’s experienced one-day cricket against two very good sides.”Matthew did very well, he knows what is required in the future and the way I view it is, that OK I missed out, but in hindsight you can turn it around and say the guy has learnt a lot and he can push his way into being a regular in the one-day series.”You need that little bit of competition and that doesn’t bother me whatever, I’ve been there and done that and I know what I’ve got to do to get back into it. It’s good that somebody’s there learning from the experience,” he said. The real test for the English attack now was to learn to work together, especially in the absence of frontline bowler Darren Gough who returned home after the one-day series.”It’s going to be an experience for everyone to learn how to bowl with each other,” Caddick said.

Harbhajan hopes his performance takes a turn for the better

Harbhajan Singh is not a happy man

Special Correspondent02-May-2002Harbhajan Singh is not a happy man. Not only are the wickets refusing to fall, but he is also not getting the vital lower-order runs that he is capable of. The Turbanator, consequently, is not his usual jovial self. When this correspondent met him outside the dressing-rooms on the last day of the three-day tour match against the Busta XI, Harbhajan was putting some stitches into a worn thigh-pad. “I am not getting runs. This was the old thigh-pad, the one I was wearing when I got some runs in Bulawayo. So I am trying to get it in shape so that it can bring me luck,” he said.In fact, in that Test in Bulawayo, he scored 66, and his partnership with Sameer Dighe won the match for India. “Whichever stroke I play, the ball is going to the hands of a fielder. I don’t know why. But one thing I can say is that if I score 10 runs in any innings, I’ll be in a better position to contribute more to the team’s total.”But what of his bowling? India is in need of the spinner in Harbhajan more than batsman. He knows only too well that he did not satisfy his fans with his bowling in the Trinidad test. “Yes, I began well, but then the wickets didn’t come. On the Queen’s Park Oval wicket, the ball didn’t turn that much,” said Harbhajan. “And this is my first tour to this part of the world. But I am confident of picking wickets. When I start picking them, I pick five.”Harbhajan bowled well against Brian Lara in the first innings of the second Test, where the West Indian left-hander was lucky to survive two close lbw calls off the off-spinner’s bowling. “I think I had bowled reasonably against him. But he is a great batsman, and mind it, he has not pulled yet in this series, maybe because of his injury,” Harbhajan said. “He will be a different batsman when he starts pulling. I am enjoying bowling against him. The way he played Murali was just unbelievable.”How does Harbhajan rate his contemporary great, Muttiah Muralitharan? “Have you seen how he is using his outgoing deliveries? No batsman will try to lift him by coming out of the crease, even in the one-dayers. And he never gives away more than 40-odd runs in his quota of 10 overs. That is a great achievement.””I am also trying to develop the outgoing delivery and use it as one of my surprise weapons. In Trinidad, I got (Ramnaresh) Sarwan with a delivery of that kind. But I have to use it more and in a more effective manner,” he said. That he was a member of an Indian side that won a Test in the Caribbean gives him a tremendous boost. Harbhajan has the captain’s confidence too, which is a must for any spinner. And since a spinner of Anil Kumble’s stature is sitting out, there is more pressure on Harbhajan to perform. If he fares badly, however, it will not augur well for the Indians in the remaining three Tests.

Les Reed: Graziano Pelle was a no-brainer signing for Southampton

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed has said signing Graziano Pelle in the 2014 summer transfer window was a “no-brainer”.

Pelle was brought to the club by Ronald Koeman, reunited with his manager at Feyenoord. And looking at his goalscoring record at the Dutch outfit, it was no surprise that Koeman was so keen on a reunion.

In 66 appearances, Pelle scored 55 goals. And given his height and stature, something Koeman spoke about upon his arrival, the Italian looked like the perfect Premier League striker.

Ultimately, for Reed, Southampton had no choice but to sign him as they looked to replace Rickie Lambert, who had left for Liverpool the same summer.

“We wanted to replace Rickie Lambert,” Reed exclusively told FFC. “Ronald had worked with Graziano at Feyenoord. Graziano had a similar style, you know, scoring record etc.

“So it was a no-brainer out of three choices of strikers to go with Graziano because the the manager knew him, trusted him, knew how to handle him and so on.”

Pelle went on to make 80 appearances for Southampton, scoring 30 goals during his two-year stint at St. Mary’s.

During that time, he also had a key role in the Italy national team, a member of the squad highly appreciated by Premier League title winner Antonio Conte.

Everton fans blast Doucoure vs Wolves

Many Everton fans have been left to blast the display of Abdoulaye Doucoure despite their win against Wolves in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

The Merseyside club managed to take all three points away from Goodison Park in front of a few thousand of their supporters as Richarlison headed in from a corner by Gylfi Sigurdsson to keep their European qualification hopes alive.

However, while there were some very good performances for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, Doucoure’s flattered to deceive.

The former Watford man lost out on two of his duels and failed to record a single blocked shot or key pass, as well as losing possession of the ball on no fewer than on 13 different occasions in the game, the third-most out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

Howey hopes PIF still want to buy NUFC

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 157 appearances for Newcastle United, is hopeful that PIF will still be interested in buying his former club despite 12 months of no progress.

It was 12 months in April since Mike Ashley accepted a £300 million bid from Amanda Staveley’s consortium that was largely backed by PIF, however, the takeover is even further away from being passed through now.

It was reported last week that Mike Ashley is set to launch a second legal battle against the Premier League for costs, damages and interests after the proposed takeover failed to be approved last year.

Speaking on how he still hopes PIF are willing to buy the club but how it will be another slow process, Howey exclusively told FFC:

“We just have to wait and see what happens because I think Mike Ashley is now putting together a lawsuit against the Premier League for anti-competition, so you can imagine that will drag on.

“Let’s just hope that these people are still willing to take the club on so things can move forward, but it will probably be another slow process as it won’t happen overnight.”

Ashley is also in the process of an arbitration case against the Premier League, which is still yet to begin as the Sports Direct tycoon looks to get Newcastle sold.

With Steve Bruce managing to guide the Magpies to safety it will allow any potential buyers to look at Newcastle as a Premier League club they could buy.

Aston Villa eyeing Sheff Utd’s Sander Berge

Aston Villa are eyeing a summer move for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, although they are set to face significant transfer competition for him.

What’s the story?

Reports from Eurosport in recent weeks suggested that Villa are one of the clubs keeping a keen eye on Berge’s situation with the Blades, with Paul Heckingbottom’s side having their relegation from the Premier League confirmed in recent weeks.

The Athletic have now claimed that, along with Dean Smith’s side, both Arsenal and Tottenham are also “following matters closely”, although it’s suggested that the Blades “would dearly like to keep their record signing”.

A midfield general for Dean Smith

With the Blades having been relegated, Villa are in a real position of strength when it comes to signing Berge, with the Yorkshire club now more likely to cash in on a player with real Premier League quality and potential – something their former boss Chris Wilder was quick to hail.

He said: “Sander has been unique. He is the one who has stood out for us. He is a complete midfielder. He can play as 8s and as 6s. He can play in different formations. The wonderful thing about Sander is his attitude.

“Complete midfielders are like that. Look at Jordan Henderson (FWA’s Footballer of the Year last season). Sander should gain enormous confidence that he can play so well in various positions in the Premier League.”

Albert Stuivenberg, Mikel Arteta’s assistant at Arsenal, said about the £35m-rated ace: “He is already very mature. He is intelligent, reads the game well, and takes the initiative. He has the potential to become a future leader.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-aston-villa-transfer-rumours-and-news-copy-copy” title=”Latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news”]

While it is unknown what price the Blades will demand, their relegation should mean they won’t be able to command the kind of fee they would have expected for him had they stayed up.

Johan Lange could really strike gold for Villa by signing Berge this summer.

Meanwhile, Villa are eyeing this Premier League star who “doesn’t stop running”…

Celtic: Howe’s reps convinced he can get PL job

We’re now approaching another week but we’re still no closer to discovering who the next Celtic manager will be.

It’s been a tale of woe for the Bhoys who are still making do with an interim boss in the dugout at Parkhead.

What’s the word?

Eddie Howe has long been the favourite to replace Neil Lennon at Paradise but as time goes on, it looks increasingly unlikely he’ll arrive.

The entrance of Dominic McKay on Monday could accelerate things and at the top of his agenda will be convincing Howe to come to Glasgow.

Though, that looks far-fetched after news that was shared by GIVEMESPORT over the weekend.

Their sources reveal that the 43-year-old’s representatives have got involved and are trying to convince the former Bournemouth boss that he can still land a job in the Premier League.

Consequently, he is now refusing to commit to the Bhoys in a fresh twist to the tale.

Two options for Howe in England are Brighton and Crystal Palace who are both courting his services.

GIVEMESPORT claims that John Kennedy is still on Celtic’s radar in case Howe refuses the job altogether.

Bad news for Desmond

Agents have a funny habit of stalling deals in modern football and that’s certainly looking like the case here.

Traditionally we usually hear an agent trying to drum up suitors for a player but on this occasion, it’s a manager who’s front and centre of an ongoing saga.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-lampard-klimala-ajer-gossip” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Celtic is undoubtedly an appealing vacancy – they are one of the biggest clubs in Scotland after all. However, the money that comes with the Premier League is also likely to be a huge factor for Howe.

If an agent wasn’t involved as heavily, he may have already accepted the Hoops job. His reps have already spoken of how their client doesn’t want to return until the summer so they are clearly a huge stumbling clock in negotiations.

This is the last thing Desmond will have wanted. After Lennon walked out the exit door, they have struggled to nail down a replacement. Roy Keane came and went while Howe is now playing them the fool.

It’s come to a point where the majority shareholder should probably think about alternative options.

Lucien Favre is one of them but considering he was looking for wages of around £75k-per-week to take over at Fenerbahce, that looks difficult to conclude too.

He must be tearing his hair out at the moment; there is no simple solution for the Bhoys.

AND in other news, McGinn 2.0: Celtic will always rue not signing 107-cap star, he’s “out of this world”…
