Tottenham fans were disappointed not to see Ndombele start vs Liverpool

Some Tottenham fans on Twitter were not happy with Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to start Tanguy Ndombele on the bench against Liverpool on Sunday.

The 6-cap France international was in fine form against Red Star Belgrade in Tuesday’s 5-0 Champions League win, grabbing two assists in what was a dominant midfield performance from the 22-year-old.

Ndombele also made three key passes and completed three tackles in his all-action display, so you can understand why some fans were disappointed to see the former Lyon man dropped for the trip to Anfield.

Pochettino opted to start with a midfield consisting of Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks against the European champions, and it seemed to be the right call early on as Tottenham went 1-0 up – the north Londoners eventually threw their lead away to lose 2-1.

Before a ball was kicked, however, they were not happy with the former Southampton manager’s decision to drop Ndombele at all.

Let’s take a look at some of the tweets…

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani clarifies exciting possible plans for the club

Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani has confirmed the club has “attracted a lot of interest†on a day when it celebrates its 100th birthday.Money tends to equal success in the modern game. Chelsea and Manchester City, who are perhaps two of the most notorious spenders since the turn of the century thanks to the money of Roman Abramovich and Sheikh Mansour respectively, have won nine Premier League titles between them (five to Chelsea and four to City). It’s no surprise then that other clubs, having seen the success that petrodollars can bring, want in.The news broke on Tuesday that Radrizzani had opened the door to three potential investors at Elland Road – Qatar Sports Investments and two unnamed parties from Italy and America. QSI have invested heavily in Paris Saint-Germain, who currently own two of the most expensive players in history, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. After announcing that he has a good relationship with the party, the 45-year-old elaborated on the details of the club’s future…

Liverpool’s defence will improve drastically when Alisson returns, stats suggest

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Alisson Becker is expected to return to first-team action for Liverpool in the coming weeks, but how much have the Reds missed their Brazilian shot-stopper?

What’s the word?

Former West Ham man Adrian has filled the void left by Alisson extremely well, there’s no doubt about it.

The Spaniard has wowed spectators and pundits with some incredible saves, stopped crucial one-on-ones from players like Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, and helped the Reds lift the Super Cup.

Yet, there is a feeling that Jurgen Klopp’s men look dramatically less stable at the back than they did last season, and the incredible stat below makes it clear just how much they truly miss their number one.

What do the stats say?

12 goals conceded in 11 matches isn’t exactly horrific, but considering it was nearly December before that number was breached last term, it is clear Alisson’s absence is being felt more than Adrian’s impressive form would suggest.

So what do the numbers tell us? Well, Adrian has a save percentage of 71%, which places him ninth in the Premier League.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Last season however, Alisson led the league with a 78% save ratio, which is of course made even more impressive by the much larger sample size than we have for Adrian.

Looking at expected goals, we see that Liverpool allowed 29.15 xG in the league last term, but only conceded 22 goals, an impressive differential of 7.15.

This season, the Reds have conceded 7.28 xG and conceded five goals, once again implying that while Adrian is having a stellar start to life at Anfield, he simply isn’t the FIFA XI goalkeeper of the year.

On top of their abilities as shot-stoppers, there may also be a difference in leadership at the back with Alisson out injured – even some fans have noticed it too.

So, Alisson is a better shot-stopper, boasts a superior xG differential and the confidence he exudes seems to offer a security blanket of comfort for those in front of him.

Put simply – fear not Liverpool fans. Once the Brazil star returns, the defensive unit that conceded less goals than any team in Europe’s top five leagues last season should be back to doing what they do best – keeping clean sheets.

Rangers’ Predicted XI for Europa League clash with Feyenoord

Rangers host Feyenoord tonight in the Europa League in what will be an emotional atmosphere following the passing of former Rangers skipper Fernando Ricksen after a long battle against Motor Neurone Disease. But how will the Gers line up at Ibrox?

Steven Gerrard has sprung selection surprises before – Jermain Defoe picked ahead of Alfredo Morelos for the Celtic clash being the most recent – and could well do so again against a Feyenoord team currently sitting a lowly seventh in the Dutch Eredivisie.

There are four areas where he is likely to make changes from the weekend – left-back, centre-half, midfield and in attack – but we anticipate these will be done through just three switches in personnel.

Borna Barisic could replace Andy Halliday at left-back. Halliday has been poor this season, no more so than against East Fife, and isn’t a natural defender by trade anyway – so it makes sense for Barisic to come back into the side.

Filip Helander could also beat Niko Katic to a place at centre-half. Football Insider reports that Katic is facing the axe after coming under fire from Connor Goldson against Livingston and considering Helander’s experience with 84 Serie A appearances under his belt, the summer signing could be a crucial asset on the European stage.

With Ryan Jack’s availability still unclear, we’re tipping Glen Kamara to join Steven Davis to protect the defence, pushing Scott Arfield into a more advanced position where he can support the front-line. He notched up 12 goals and seven assists for Rangers last season, albeit just one strike coming in the Europa League.

That also solves the issue of Ryan Kent’s injury, with Arfield essentially taking his spot as part of the Rangers attack.

Overall then, three personnel changes are anticipated for tonight’s game.

Nottingham Forest should ditch Ben Watson in favour of John Bostock

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Nottingham Forest are finally back in action this afternoon after some time off for the international break.

Sabri Lamouchi’s men will have been hard at training considering it is the first time he’s had any significant involvement with his squad as he was appointed so late before pre-season got underway.

It means he’s had time to fully instil his gameplan and tactics without the distractions of playing two matches a week.

The Reds’ fixtures appear much more comfortable this month, but it does begin with the tough trip to league leaders Swansea City.

It may be the perfect opportunity to implement a change that needs to happen to benefit Forest not only in the short-term but hopefully in the long term too.

On the Chalkboard

Currently, Lamouchi deploys Ben Watson in defensive midfield, but fans haven’t been overly keen on him this season, and at 34, he can’t be far off retiring considering this is the twilight of his career.

The 5 foot 10 midfielder hasn’t done a great deal wrong if you’re fair, but his legs are starting to go a little bit – not that it is a problem for the role he’s required to play.

He’s averaging just 0.7 key passes per game, as well as 0.2 dribbles per outing which maybe proves the previous statement.

They signed John Bostock on loan this summer, and he’s an ideal candidate to replace the former Wigan midfielder.

He was once courted by La Liga giants Barcelona when he was a teenager and at one stage earned a move to Tottenham, so there had to have been some talent there.

He’s since lost his way, playing in Belgium, Turkey and France but maybe the French boss can be the one to get the best out of him.

There were definitely glimpses of that against Derby in their Carabao Cup demolishing where he was arguably one of the best players on the pitch. He completed 96% of his passes and also won three aerial duels according to SofaScore.

To do it against opposition of the same tier as Forest surely only strengthens his argument on why he should be given a start.

Real Madrid’s defensive record suggests further reinforcements are needed

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Real Madrid have once again spent big money in the transfer window with nearly £300m thrown at a number of new signings. But despite some exciting names joining the squad, their issues at the back remain unsolved.

On the chalkboard

By this point and after only one pre-season tour and three games played in the new 2019/20 La Liga season, it’s becoming pretty obvious: Real Madrid are leaking goals. During the summer when they were gearing up for the new campaign, Los Blancos played five games and conceded an incredible 16 goals, almost equalling their worst-ever tally from 1980 when they let 17 strikes rattle their net.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

When we crunch the numbers a bit more we get a rather worrying figure of 3.2 goals conceded per game, which is far too many for a club of Real Madrid’s pedigree and stature, not to mention their aspirations.

And the problems were not fixed at the beginning of 2019/20 either. In the first three games they played, the Galacticos conceded four goals, which is only two fewer than they’ve scored in the process. Clearly, there’s a glaring flaw in that squad: their defence.

Out with the old, in with the new

If Zinedine Zidane was looking for culprits for this crime, which he should be doing, he wouldn’t have to look much further than his own backline. All four of Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Dani Carvajal have seen some better days. Ferland Mendy’s performance against Villarreal immediately showed how big of a difference it makes to have a good defender in the squad, but it was actually the centre-backs that have been questioned as of late.

Both Varane and Ramos have averaged only 1.3 tackles per game in La Liga so far this season and the Frenchman has only one interception per game while the Spaniard sits at 1.3. It’s safe to say that they haven’t really set the world alight with their performances and Zidane should be looking to bring more competition into the ranks.

Eder Militao is the only new centre-back who joined the squad but he’s yet to make his official debut in the competition, which might suggest Zidane is sticking with more familiar faces for now. And looking at the stats and Madrid’s leakiness in the back, that might not be the best of ideas.

Real have played a total of 21 games since Zidane’s return and in that period they’ve won eight, drawn six and lost seven games. Their goal difference is rather bad as well: 36 scored and 35 conceded with just five clean sheets.

Something has to change fast and it would be wise of Zidane to forget all about Neymar, who seems to be back on the table, and look for some new defenders instead.

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld shows Marko Arnautovic how it’s done

[ad_pod ]

Toby Alderweireld has been a model professional throughout a season and a summer that has been defined by one number: £25m.

That is the value of the clause within his contract that expires this Thursday.

It could have seen him depart for a relative pittance in an already inflated transfer market and, really, it is nothing short of a miracle that Spurs have been able to keep hold of him.

This is a truly exceptional defender, the kind who reminds one of Rio Ferdinand, regularly leaving the pitch with his shorts as pristine as they were when he jogged on before play began. He has made 159 appearances for the club, with 50 coming last season. He played 90 minutes in the Champions League final and has forged a genuinely brilliant partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen in central defence.

He could have asked for a transfer. He could have pushed. Reports suggest that Roma and Manchester United both expressed an interest but neither matched that clause.

Alderweireld has kept his head down, kept going and actually captained Spurs to a 3-2 pre-season win over Juventus last weekend.

When asked about his future after the game, he said: “Because from day one I do what I need to do. I am happy,” he said. “I think that is the way the manager wants us to play, to give everything to the team and work hard and that’s it. I am here I work hard and do what needs to be done.

“It’s tough because pre-season is tough. I do my best like in every club I’ve been at. From day one I do my best.”

Compare this to Marko Arnautovic, the striker who forced his way out of West Ham United at the beginning of the summer transfer window.

Now, admittedly, these are two completely different players with different profiles and, clearly, different motivations.

Yet their situations were similar.

Arnautovic signed a new contract in January and insisted, per sources, that a clause be included in the deal that would allow him to leave for £45m in this transfer window.

A bid was tabled from Shanghai SIPG that did not come anywhere close to that. It was roughly £19.7m.

Arnautovic insisted it be accepted. Per sources, he made it very clear that he expected to be allowed to move to China in this transfer window.

Eventually, West Ham were forced to cave. He did this in January, too, but manager Manuel Pellegrini believed he could work with him and coax the best out of him.

He threw that back in his face by insisting upon his departure and once a bid of £22.5m came in, the club were genuinely glad to see the back of him. FFC sources have confirmed that Pellegrini sanctioned his sale and that players were also consulted.

Compare and contrast. Where Arnautovic forced his way out, Alderweireld has been a model professional.

There could still be a bid. United could come back in if their mooted pursuit of Harry Maguire does not bear any fruit.

But Spurs fans have no need to worry. There will not be a repeat of the situation across London.

Alderweireld has too much class for that, too much dignity, and too much respect for the badge he plays for.

He has put Arnautovic to shame and, even if he does leave, Spurs fans will have to applaud the professionalism of a player who has been a shining example to all throughout his spell in north London.

Leeds fans react negatively to club documentary

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday morning, Leeds United’s official Twitter account posted a trailer of the club’s upcoming documentary based on the 2018-19 campaign.

However, it would be fair to say that it has not gone down too well with the fans.

For long stages of last season, Leeds looked very well placed to secure a return to the Premier League, with the team impressing under Marcelo Bielsa.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

The Whites were ultimately made to settle for the playoffs after dropping out of the top two in the Championship, but they lost to Derby County in the semi-finals to stay in the second tier for at least one more season.

The documentary, which will be released in August, is based on the campaign just gone, with behind-the-scenes footage set to air.

However, it has brought a poor reaction from the club’s fans on social media, with not too many keen to relive the pain – as shown in the tweets below:
