Cook to step down from ODI captaincy?

Alastair Cook has hinted that he will consider his future as England’s one-day captain after the series in Australia and, for the first time, appeared to be wavering over his role in the Test side as well.Cook was powerless to stop Australia cantering to a 3-0 series lead in Sydney – their eighth consecutive loss of the tour – less than 48 hours after watching them snatch an incredible last-over finish in Brisbane, when England appeared to have finally secured an international win since leaving home.”I’m going to have a decision on that stuff after the next two games. We will sit down and talk about a lot of things. I think there will be some changes, English cricket needs a little bit of a change,” he said. “The last two months we haven’t played the cricket we are capable of and we have to look at the reasons why.”Alastair Cook said he will “have to make a decision” on the captaincy after another defeat•Getty ImagesOn the eve of the one-day series, in Melbourne, Cook had struck a more upbeat note, having been given reassurances about his captaincy from Paul Downton, the new managing director of England, but when asked again about his leadership of both formats he seemed less sure.”I don’t really want to get dragged into my position,” he said. “I don’t know what I’ll feel like when I get home. It’s been two weeks since someone has asked me that question and a lot has happened. We have kept losing and I haven’t been able to turn it around.”Although this tour has been hugely difficult for Cook, both from a captaincy and batting point of view, this was the first one-day series he had led in since England reached the final of the Champions Trophy, where they lost to India, in June.Cook has been one-day captain since 2011, when he took over from Andrew Strauss a year before being elevated to the Test job. In that time has secured home series wins against Sri Lanka, India, West Indies and Australia and away successes in Pakistan and New Zealand. The prospect of a 10-0 sweep on this tour remains across the formats that Cook captains, which are then followed by three Twenty20 matches where Stuart Broad will lead. Cook said he still had the drive to see out the last two matches in Perth and Adelaide, however.”I’ve got a job to do, to try and turn it around and win one of these games. That’s the task in hand. I’m competitive, I want to leave everything out on the pitch.”If Cook was to stand down from the one-day role the captaincy choice would appear to come down to Broad or Eoin Morgan. It would be a natural elevation for either with Broad already having the T20 role and Morgan having stood in for the matches against Ireland and Australia last year when Cook and Broad were both rested. An advantage for Morgan is that, as a batsman, and one currently not in the Test line-up, there would be less need for him to be rested at any stage.Michael Clarke, who will miss the next ODI along with David Warner, Brad Haddin and Shane Watson, can draw on first-hand experience over the last 12 months of being in charge of a team in a similar state to England, but did not want to get drawn into Cook’s situation.”I don’t think feeling sorry for an opposition captain is the right thing to feel,” he said. “I know to a certain extent what Alastair’s going through because we’ve experienced some tough times as a team, and it is a tough as a captain, but at the end of the day I’m here to help Australia have success and we’ve experienced a lot of defeats in the past couple of years. I think it would be very silly for me to put myself in Alastair’s shoes because I’m not there.”

Hussey throws spanners in KKR works

In the searing heat of Chennai, the home side, Chennai Super Kings, soared to the top of the table with a 14-run win over the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders

Dhoni fined

MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings captain, has been fined $20,000 because his team maintained a slow-over rate in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai. The Super Kings were found to be two overs behind the over-rate during their successful defence of 200. It was Dhoni’s first such offence this season.

In the searing heat of Chennai, the home side, Chennai Super Kings, soared to the top of the table with a 14-run win over the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders. Michael Hussey and the newcomer Wriddhiman Saha stunned the visitors with a 103-run opening stand, Hussey continued hurting them even after the loss of Saha, and the run rate hovered around 10. Hussey missed the century by five runs, but he had set up a daunting task for Knight Riders, who had asked the hosts to bat first.Sunil Narine and Jacques Kallis both registered their second-worst analyses in IPL, going for 35 and 51 respectively. Like in the final of the last IPL at the same venue, Manvinder Bisla scored 92 – he was out on 43 but not given, which kept Knight Riders fighting, but the target was too big, especially with next to little support from the other end.Coming in ahead of M Vijay, who had scored only 122 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of less than a run a ball, Saha, the Bengal wicketkeeper-batsman, was the surprise package. And Hussey, he was just Hussey. He began with a flick off a loose delivery down the leg side, and then hit L Balaji for three consecutive fours – two of them over extra cover, and one edged through slip.Saha then went after his Bengal team-mate Shami Ahmed, taking four, four and six in the fourth over. After Hussey took Narine apart in the fifth over, and Saha did the same to Kallis in the sixth, Super Kings had registered their best Powerplay of this season, 67 for 0. Hussey reached his fifty as early as the eighth over, and despite the oppressive heat he kept converting every one-and-a-half into two.Saha’s wicket came and went, but the run rate refused to go down. Hussey’s wicket came and went – agonisingly short of the milestone and off a long hop – but even that didn’t slow the run rate down. When it did seem to slow down, MS Dhoni got a full toss off the last ball of the innings, and duly took six.Knight Riders got a good start with an extras-ridden opening over by Dirk Nannes, but Chris Morris soon removed Gautam Gambhir. Bisla, struggling at that time, got going with four fours off Morris in the fifth over, but at the other end Brendon McCullum played Mohit Sharma on to make it 63 for 2 after six overs. An ideal period followed for Super Kings as Kallis and Bisla both struggled to hit the boundaries or alternate the strike, and by the time the next boundary was hit, a six off the last ball of the 10th over, the asking rate had reached 11.6.The pressure resulted in mistakes, but in the next two overs Dhoni missed a stumping and the third umpire refused to acknowledge a run-out, a result of a canny deflection from Dhoni. Kallis soon fell to an ungainly ramp, leaving about 13 an over, which would soon cross 15. Bisla and Eoin Morgan gave the target a fair go, bringing it down to 29 off the last two overs, but Hussey once again killed it off with a direct hit from mid-on.

Palmeiras aproveita a falha e abre o placar

Zé Ricardo bateu no canto direito do goleiro e empatou o jogo.

Brownlie and Flynn join Test squad

Daniel Flynn and Dean Brownlie have been called up for New Zealand’s third Test against South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Mar-2012Daniel Flynn is likely to play for New Zealand for the first time in more than two years after being called up for the third Test against South Africa. The batsman Dean Brownlie has also been named in a 14-man squad for the match, starting in Wellington on Friday, after missing the first two Tests due to a broken finger. The opener Rob Nicol has been dropped after scores of 6, 19, 2 and 1 in his first two Tests, and the fast bowler Brent Arnel has also been squeezed out after failing to take a wicket in the defeat in Hamilton. Flynn is set to open the bating alongside Martin Guptill, while Brownlie, who was the leading scorer on the tour of Australia earlier this summer, will only slot back in to the middle order if the selectors are happy with his progress in a Plunket Shield match this week.Flynn, 26, last played for New Zealand in their home Test series against Pakistan in December 2009, when he was batting in the middle order. Although he has been batting at No.5 in the Plunket Shield this season the selectors have been impressed with his form – he has scored centuries in his past two games and has averaged 65.85 – and are prepared to throw him in at the top of the order.New Zealand Test Squad

Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn, Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor (capt), Kane Williamson, Dean Brownlie, Daniel Vettori, Kruger van Wyk (wk), Andrew Ellis, Tarun Nethula, Doug Bracewell, Tren Boult, Mark Gillespie, Chris Martin

“Daniel Flynn is having a very successful Plunket Shield with the bat for Northern and is likely to join Martin Guptill at the top of the order,” the national selection manager Kim Littlejohn said. “He was part of the team in late 2009 and we are sure he will make the most of his opportunity to again represent his country.”We are mindful that Dean Brownlie is only just making a return to competitive cricket following injury and will keep a close eye on his progress. Although he has been included in the squad, his selection for the Test will largely depend on how he pulls through the match for Canterbury.”It’s disappointing for Rob and Brent but at this stage we do not feel they have managed to cement their place in the squad. Both players will benefit from a return to domestic cricket where they can put performances on the board. We are sure they will do this and will be very much in contention for selection on the upcoming tour to the West Indies.”Edited by Brydon Coverdale
