Transfer Focus: Nigel Adkins’ reluctancy to sign new deal could signal bad times for Hull

[ad_pod ]

Hull City are still waiting to hear back from Nigel Adkins regarding a new contract at the club. With his current deal expiring in just over a month, the Tigers still don’t know if the former Southampton boss will be in the dugout at the start of next season.

The 54-year-old has done a stellar job at the KCOM Stadium this season, guiding the Yorkshire club to a 13th-place finish after a rocky start.

Want him to stay

There’s no doubt that the higher-ups at Hull would want Adkins to stay on with the club next season.

He has been presented a new deal by his current employers, and there seems to be no reason for him to not take them up on their offer.

Management can be a tough place to find a new job at times, so it seems strange that Adkins almost seems willing to let his contract run down.

Reasons to leave

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Adkins has a number of reasons why he would want to get away from the club before next season.

Their talisman Jarrod Bowen seems to be on his way out with Premier League sides often linked with the dynamic winger.

The 22-year-old netted 22 goals for Adkins’ side this season, and if he leaves it may be inevitable that they take a backwards step next term.

The manager’s stock may be the highest it will possibly be as Hull boss, and if he gets out now, he may find himself in a much better job in the near future.

There are also murmurs of a takeover at Hull, bringing about uncertainty for the manager next season. Adkins was sacked as Reading boss after a takeover in 2015 so he may want to jump before he is pushed this time around.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

Perhaps the boss has caught wind of the impending takeover and believes it will bring about an era of instability at the club. If that is the case it and Adkins doesn’t sign on the dotted line, then Hull fans should be worried.

Tottenham: Daniel Levy must cash in on Eric Dier to challenge for title

Eric Dier has proved in the last few months that he’s simply not good enough to lead Spurs’ midfield to silverware. As a result, Daniel Levy should cash in on him in the summer and spend the money on a replacement.

The 25-year-old was dubbed the ‘new John Terry’ when Spurs signed him from Sporting Lisbon in 2014. The transfer cost £5m, according to Transfermarkt, so they’ve got their money’s worth out of him, but now it’s time for the club to move forward.

His performance against West Ham on Saturday was embarrassing, but Football Insider are claiming Manchester United are plotting a summer move for the Englishman. That should be music to Daniel Levy’s ears, and he should bite their hand off when they approach him.

He’s rated at £40m on Transfermarkt, so Mauricio Pochettino could bring in a really high fee considering he’s pretty expendable. That’ll mean the money can be spent on bringing in a younger, more energetic player, perhaps from abroad to keep the price down.

It’d be annoying to see one of their stars going to a fierce rival, but if they’re willing to sell him then he shouldn’t really make much of a difference when it comes to winning trophies. Man United seem way off winning anything anyway, so they might not even be considered a rival!

What a glorious thought for Spurs fans, right?

Dier has made 18 appearances for Spurs this season, so he’s not been one of their key men. Harry Winks and certainly Moussa Sissoko (yes, really) are the players Spurs should be keeping for next season at least. Indeed, a new first choice is needed and the Dier money can fund that.

No deal: Liverpool will not be moving for Lorenzo Insigne this summer

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his team will not be moving for Napoli attacker Lorenzo Insigne in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the latest?

Well, a report in Corriere dello Sport claimed that Liverpool were interested in swooping for Insigne.

Indeed, it has been suggested that the 27-year-old has fallen out with Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti, which could lead to a summer departure.

However, Klopp – speaking at his press confidence ahead of Friday night’s clash with Huddersfield Town – rejected the transfer speculation.

The Liverpool manager simply stated that his team would not be moving for the Italy international in this summer’s transfer window.

It seems likely that a new attacker will arrive at Anfield this summer, but that player will not be Insigne.

Will Liverpool regret not making a move?

Insigne has scored 76 times in 302 appearances for Napoli in all competitions, including 13 times during the 2018-19 campaign.

The 30-time international is a big talent, but he has a contract in Naples until the summer of 2022, suggesting that Liverpool would have to make a sizeable bid to convince the Serie A club to sell.

Whilst Insigne would improve a lot of clubs, he would not go into Liverpool’s starting XI due to the presence of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

As a result, the Merseyside outfit would be much better off spending the money on a top-quality central midfielder this summer.

Indeed, Klopp would be better off attempting to sign a player capable of contributing goals and assists from a deeper position, which would take the Reds to a new level next season.

Journalist slams Brown’s post-match behaviour, Celtic fans react

[ad_pod ]

Loads of fans, players and pundits alike have had their say on the controversy surrounding Sunday’s Old Firm, but Celtic fans can’t quite believe what one journalist tweeted.

The third Old Firm of the season has been and gone and it certainly did not disappoint.

Alfredo Morelos once again fell victim to an opponent player getting in his head, as Bhoys captain Scott Brown helped get the Colombian sent off.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Odsonne Edouard had just given the home side a deserved lead before Ryan Kent cancelled it out with a wonderfully taken goal, only for James Forrest to pop up with a dramatic late winner.

The entertainment didn’t end there though, as Brown’s celebrations after the final whistle sparked more confrontation, confrontation that led to Andy Halliday receiving a second yellow card.

And Ewan Murray, a writer for The Guardian, has slammed Brown for goading the Rangers fans after full time.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are less than impressed by Murray’s verdict…

Sunderland fans react to Watmore injury

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reacting to a crushing blow, as Duncan Watmore has once again suffered a season-ending injury.

Sunderland were held to a 0-0 draw at Oakwell on Tuesday night, as Barnsley kept a slight advantage over the Black Cats in the race for automatic promotion.

Jack Ross’ side will certainly take a point from a ground where just six other teams have avoided defeated this season (and not one has won), but the gaffer delivered an update after the game that has taken any gloss off an otherwise decent outing.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

Watmore, who missed the first 19 games of the season with a knee injury, will now miss the remainder of the campaign with an ankle problem, the club confirmed.

The 25 year-old became an instant fan favourite when he broke into the first team as a youngster, and has since racked up 65 games for the club.

That 65 would of course be a lot higher if he wasn’t so unfortunate with injuries, and loads of fans have been giving their verdict on his latest setback.

For the exit: Andy Carroll

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United spent heavily in the last summer transfer window, following the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini. The likes of Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko, Lukasz Fabianski and Issa Diop have added genuine quality to the squad at the London Stadium.

However, the Hammers still have plenty of deadwood to shift out. For various reasons, the futures of Winston Reid, Arthur Masuaku and Andy Carroll should all be under consideration. Carroll’s current contract with the Irons is actually due to expire at the end of this season, which offers the east London club a golden opportunity to get the injury-prone 30-year-old forward off their books in a hassle-free manner.

However, in December, Pellegrini offered Carroll a lifeline, saying “when you need to renew your contract, of course you must demonstrate why you need to renew…We know what Andy can give to our team, now he must demonstrate he is able to do it week by week…I hope that he will be able to do it”, as quoted by Sky Sports.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

In the same month, Carroll reiterated to talkSPORT his desire to stay in Stratford, “I am focused on staying here and that’s where my head is at.” He has subsequently featured regularly for the first team in the early months of 2019.

To even seriously entertain the notion of offering the 9-cap England international new terms would be a mistake on West Ham’s part. Instead, they must already be seeking an upgrade on the 6’4” striker to bring in this summer.

Why he has to go

Injuries have ravaged Carroll’s career. Since joining West Ham from Liverpool in 2012, the attacker has managed just 141 appearances for the club in all competitions in the subsequent six-and-a-half seasons.

According to Spotrac, Carroll is currently being paid £90,000-a-week. That is a huge amount to be paying a player who is so infrequently available. At this stage in his career, his fitness concerns are not going to lessen either.

When he has got on the pitch this season, Carroll has looked a shadow of his former self. What pace he had has gone, and he has been left so fragile and bereft of confidence that he has been unable to compete physically with the effectiveness his stature suggests he should have.

Time is up for Carroll at West Ham, and the club must recognise that now.

Sunderland fans frustrated by set piece troubles

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been discussing their current form, and they are not too happy with the team’s set piece troubles.

Sunderland sit just three points off the automatic promotion places after their 1-0 win over Wimbledon, but there are still some weak points in Jack Ross’s squad.

The Black Cats have not lost since the 3-1 defeat at Portsmouth back in December, but more than a few teams have threatened the Wearside outfit at set pieces this campaign.

Ross’s side are better in possession than most of the teams in League One, but they have struggled at times when defending set pieces, and the lack of goals at the other end from dead balls is equally frustrating.

Barnsley, who sit three points above the Black Cats in second, looked like scoring with every set piece during the thrilling 4-2 encounter at the Stadium of Light back in November, where the towering Kieffer Moore scored twice.

Being one of the more dominant teams in division, there will no doubt be games between now and the end of the season where Ross’s side can’t find a way through a packed defence, and corners could provide a vital solution, a solution that promotion rivals Barnsley have perfected.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are in total agreement that the side needs to improve this aspect of their game…

Manchester United: Fans react to Daniel James’ latest workout

Manchester United youngster Daniel James has kept fans up-to-date with his work ethic after the club’s official Twitter account posted a video of him working out during the coronavirus pandemic.

James has recorded 1.3 shots per game, averaged 1.3 dribbles, and made 0.5 key passes on average according to WhoScored.

Garry Monk gives update on Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has offered a blunt response when asked about long-serving goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, which certainly raises question marks over his future at Hillsborough.

What’s he said?

The Owls take a break from Championship action on Friday night as they face a trip to league rivals Queens Park Rangers for an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Loftus Road.

Monk’s side recorded a historic victory over Premier League side Brighton to get here, but last time out they were dealt a humiliating blow by losing 5-0 to Blackburn Rovers.

The 40-year-old was left “shocked” by the performance as he revealed in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon whilst he also offered injuries updates on a trio of players.

Both Liam Palmer and Fernando Forestieri are back training, but he wasn’t so forthright over Westwood’s situation. He simply said:

“Yeah, he’s fit.”

Garry Monk, pre-game press conference.

Unlikely future

The 35-year-old has been at the south Yorkshire club since the summer of 2014 when he was signed by former boss Stuart Gray. He has gone on to play 179 matches for the Owls and has twice been named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Recently however, Westwood has struggled to keep his number one spot under Monk ever since picking up an injury in November.

In fact, he has been missing from the starting line up in 12 straight games now in all competitions and has only been named on the bench twice in that run.

Cameron Dawson has been favoured between the sticks while both Paul Jones and another goalkeeper returning from injury, Joe Wildsmith, have been selected above him on the bench.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all of these obscure Sheffield Wednesday players…

The veteran shot-stopper has another year on his current deal at Hillsborough, but his recent exclusion from the matchday squad despite being fit only raises doubts over whether or not he has a future at the club.

Monk’s frank admission doesn’t fill you with enough confidence to say otherwise either.

And in other news, Alan Nixon reveals that the Owls are some way off in their pursuit of this Premier League striker…
