Celtic’s Montgomery set for loan move

Adam Montgomery will be the latest Celtic player sent out on loan this month, The Daily Record’s Scott Burns reports.

The lowdown

Celtic have already granted temporary moves for two of their youngsters in January, with Ewan Henderson and Liam Shaw heading for Hibernian and Motherwell respectively.

As Burns notes in his report, Osaze Urhoghide is likely to follow suit as he holds talks with Dundee FC.

Montgomery has made 18 appearances for The Hoops in all competitions, eight of which have come in European competition.

The latest

Ange Postecoglou has ‘high hopes’ for Montgomery but he feels it would now be in his best interests to head elsewhere for ‘a regular run of first-team games’, reports Burns.

It’s seen as the next step for the Scotsman, who will then return to Lennoxtown in the summer in search of a greater squad role.

The verdict

The beauty of Celtic’s nine-point cushion to the teams third and below is that they can send their young players to some of the stronger Scottish Premiership clubs without fearing repercussions. Motherwell and Hibs, for instance, rank fourth and fifth in the table.

£405,000-rated Montgomery certainly looked to be an important squad player in the first half of the campaign, but the signing of Reo Hatate gives Postecoglou another option at left back.

Long-term, the hope may be that the 19-year-old can be the next Kieran Tierney, living up to Mark Guidi’s billing.

Tierney’s £24.3million sale was the most lucrative in Celtic’s history, and so that would be some going.

Last mile could be the toughest for South Africa

Different teams react to pressure in different ways. In the past, South Africa didn’t really enjoy being pushed into a corner. When subjected to pressure, they had all the resilience of a can of Castle. Then Perth happened and later, Melbourne. As recently as last month, they demolished England in a game that they had to win to at least share spoils in a series where they had been the better side. Traditionally, India have been just the opposite. Few sides start a series as poorly, and few summon up such memorable performances when least expected. On the tour of England in 2002, they were routed at Lord’s and escaped at Trent Bridge before deciding to bat first in seamer-friendly conditions at Headingley. They won by an innings. After the dramatic last-afternoon collapse and the attendant controversy at Sydney (2008), they went to Perth and ambushed Australia in conditions where they were expected to submit to Australia’s four-man pace attack.A few months later, South Africa humiliated them on a well-grassed surface at Ahmedabad and then won the toss on a pitch never likely to last the distance in Kanpur. But Sourav Ganguly produced a masterful 87 to give India a 60-run lead and the bowlers did the rest. Dale Steyn may have referred to it as a bunsen-burner of a pitch, but it took some especially inept batting to squander the advantage of the toss.Whenever the Eden Gardens is mentioned, thoughts turn to those unforgettable five days in March 2001. It’s easy to forget that that too came after a clinical Australian display in Mumbai, when everyone except Sachin Tendulkar looked utterly out of their depth. After the crushing win in Nagpur, South Africa’s confidence couldn’t be higher, and all eyes are on the nature of a pitch that the curator has insisted won’t be dictated by home interest. The last time these two teams played in Kolkata, Graeme Smith was amazed by the reception that his team got during an utterly one-sided 10-wicket victory. That one-day game had come soon after the Greg Chappell-Sourav Ganguly spat and with Kolkata’s golden boy sidelined, the Indian players muttered afterwards of how they’d felt like the away side. The South Africans shouldn’t expect such backing this time, but with capacity reduced to half because of renovations, they also won’t have to confront the intimidating atmosphere that made even grizzled Australian veterans quail back in 2001. With the Test starting on a Sunday though, expect plenty of noise each time a wicket falls or a four is hit.South Africa won by a mammoth 329 runs back in 1996, but were on the wrong end of a Harbhajan Singh special in 2004. A Jacques Kallis-century had held the first innings together but with India having built a significant lead, the close-in fields and sharp turn were too much to handle. Smith and Kallis offered stout resistance but having found his rhythm, Harbhajan was unstoppable. He will once again be a central figure, especially after all the questions raised about his form and lack of effectiveness in Nagpur. He has 38 wickets from his six Tests at Eden Gardens, but India will need to catch much better than they did in the first Test if that tally is to be enhanced. With Kallis and Hashim Amla in prime form, and Smith unlikely to go a full series without playing a big innings, India need to latch on to every chance that comes their way. With the winter cold still to disappear completely, the pace bowlers will certainly enjoy the conditions, and that should persuade India to break with tradition and go with three pace bowlers. With Zaheer Khan now undoubtedly the best bowler in the line-up, spin isn’t the weapon it once was. If Harbhajan needs support, there’s always Virender Sehwag to bowl some overs of canny offspin. If India are to find a route back into the series though, there’s little doubt that the principal protagonists are the men at the top of the order. When Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir score, they do so at such a pace that even the biggest threats – Mendis and Murali in Galle in 2008 – are neutralised. Gambhir had his first poor Test in ages at Nagpur, while Sehwag alone handled Steyn with any confidence at the first time of asking. How they combine here will decide India’s fate.South Africa were 2-0 winners back in 2000, but in 1996, 2004 and 2008, they found the last Test of the series a bridge too far. Smith insists that things have changed, that this is a more battle-hardened outfit. In Steyn, they have the best bowler in the world. Kallis is the best allrounder since Imran Khan. This really does look like a team whose time has come. Just don’t write off India, who have a habit of scaling great heights from subterranean depths.

Calvert-Lewin back training for Everton

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing over an official social media post from club ahead of their game at Crystal Palace later today.

As per the  Toffees’ official Twitter channel, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is now back on the pitch doing individual training as he continues to recover from his injury setback, which has kept him out of action since August.

The match at Selhurst Park this evening may come too soon for him, but it is such a boost to see the striker back in training, meaning that he should be ready to return soon.

Calvert-Lewin scored three goals in his first three appearances of the season prior to his injury (Transfermarkt) and was their top scorer in 2020/21 with 21 goals, showing just how crucial he is to the team, so his return will very much be welcomed by Rafael Benitez and Everton supporters.

Captains sceptical about use of reviews

The ICC claims the majority of players are in support of the umpire decision review system (UDRS), but judging by the evidence from the England and South Africa camps ahead of their Test series, they still have some convincing to do.Both teams have been briefed by Dave Richardson, ICC’s general manager, about the new technology in use to try and get across the aim of the system, which now includes ball-tracking software. However, in this series Hotspot – which caused controversy during the recent Australia-West Indies Test in Adelaide when an edge from Shivnarine Chanderpaul was unclear – won’t be available because the cash-strapped host broadcaster, SABC, aren’t able to cover the costs.Richardson was at pains to stress that the UDRS isn’t designed to cut out the marginal errors, rather the howling mistakes, and for that reason the players must go about the process sensibly. However, Graeme Smith was far from enthusiastic about the plans which will leave him with even more decisions to make.”At the start of the series, I have my doubts. It needs to prove its worth to me,” he said. “We had a few frustrations with it in the last series against Australia. We felt that it probably caused a few more frustrations than added value.”But we’re told it does improve the standards of the game, so we’re going to go along with it and be positive about it – and try to use it to the best of our ability. But I’m a little bit sceptical … we’ll see how it goes through the series.”I guess the responsibility ultimately falls on the captain,” he added. “The ICC are going a long way towards making our jobs a lot more difficult these days. I will take the advice of players – if you can trust your bowlers.Smith’s opposite number, Andrew Strauss, hopes to learn from his experiences of the earlier incarnation of the system which was used when England toured West Indies in February and March. There were a number of controversial moments during that series, including a vital reprieve for Ramnaresh Sarwan at Sabina Park when the TV umpire didn’t have access to a full picture on his monitor.”You have to be smart about how you use it and having experience probably helps you in that respect,” Strauss said. “I’m trying to cast my mind back to how things worked in West Indies and what lessons we learned.”We’ve got to go out there and trial it, and there are some reservations about it. From some of the games recently, the initial reservations I had haven’t gone away, but it’s there and maybe the more we use it the better it will get. You can’t rule something out completely until you have tried it.”The TV umpire’s technology has since been upgraded to ensure the best possible images are available and Richardson wants the process to be given a fair chance. “This will definitely diminish controversies over umpiring decisions,” he said. “The biggest danger is that people are not prepared to give it the time needed to come to terms with it and they write it off before the system can prove itself to its full potential.”However, the ICC did have one voice of reasonable support from Stuart Broad, who has been known to lose his cool when umpiring decisions go against him. As a fast bowler keen to get justice for his exertions, he is willing to give technology a chance.”It is a strange feeling when you feel like you’ve got a wicket then it gets referred,” he said. “But I’m happy to see technology in the game if it helps the big decisions that can change the course of games and series, so long as it’s right.”Steve Davis and Aleem Dar are the on-field umpires for the first Test while Amiesh Saheba, from India, will be in the man in the TV hot-seat. It will be the first time Saheba has been in the third umpire’s position for the UDRS and he will be under scrutiny as much as the men in the middle.

Rangers not eyeing Gennaro Gattuso

A major update has emerged on Rangers’ search for a new manager, regarding Italian coach Gennaro Gattuso…

What’s the talk?

According to a report from Sky Sports, the Gers are not considering a deal to bring the ex-Napoli boss to the club to replace Steven Gerrard.

Derek McInnes and Gattuso have both been ruled out as Rangers continue to consider appointing Dutch manager Gio van Bronckhorst instead.

Gutting

This update from Sky will surely leave Rangers fans gutted as Gattuso could have been an interesting appointment at Ibrox. The retired midfielder, who previously played for the club, is reportedly interested in the role and we published an article explaining why it could be a great move.

However, it now appears as though the Gers have made a decision not to approach the 43-year-old and will continue their search for Steven Gerrard’s replacement without looking at the former Milan and Napoli head coach. This is a major update that rules him out of the running and could leave supporters disappointed that he is not being considered.

Ex-AC Milan and Brazil midfielder Kaka previously lauded his controversial former teammate and said:

“Gattuso? It was great to see him coaching for the first time with my own eyes. He’s the same as he was as a player in terms of energy and motivation.

“He spent the whole time motivating the team and demanding the best, but that’s not all. Rino is very good, he’s managed to study and prepare well, and all these things make him a phenomenon.”

Gattuso has 122 games of managerial experience in the Serie A with Napoli and Milan under his belt, winning an impressive 1.86 points per game in that time. He never finished below seventh in his four seasons between the two Italian giants, finishing fifth twice, and he won the Italian Cup with Napoli in the 2019/20 campaign – showing that he has the quality as a coach to win silverware.

This shows that he is a talented manager who has proven himself at the top level in Italy, as he was able to successfully manage two huge clubs in Milan and Napoli who like the Gers, traditionally have higher expectations. Therefore, he could potentially have been a good appointment by Rangers and that is precisely why fans will be gutted that the club are not interested in exploring a deal for him.

Rafa Benitez must unleash Rhys Hughes

Everton’s season is in need of an injection of positivity following a poor run of results, and the emergence of a homegrown talent could be the ideal solution.

The Toffees have picked up just one point from a possible 12 in recent weeks as Rafa Benitez’s charges have struggled to cope with a lengthy list of absentees, increasing the pressure on the Spaniard.

A lack of goals following Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s enforced absence has been a constant source of frustration, but the solution could already be within the club.

Rhys Hughes has caught the eye over the last couple of campaigns for both the U18s and U23s, supplying the grateful strikers with a constant stream of quality crosses and through balls from out wide.

Since the start of 2019/20, the 20-year-old has bagged seven goals and provided a further 15 assists in 50 appearances for Everton, highlighting his top-class potential.

His eye-catching exploits for the youth teams led to Hughes signing his first professional contract in January 2020, before U23 manager David Unsworth lauded his technical ability.

“He’s got ability. What we’ve looked at is where do we play him,” said the tactician in a recent interview. “We felt playing off one of the sides, coming into the pockets, getting on the ball on the half-turn, was probably his best opportunity.”

However, Unsworth then suggested that the Wales U21 international needs to spend another 12 months in the youth setup to improve his physicality, although expressed his excitement at the potential of the dead-ball specialist.

“He has to get quicker, he has to get stronger, he has to develop physically, but this all happens naturally.

“He’s got the ability, he needs to build his stamina and his physicality but if you’re talking a footballer, he is an outstanding footballer with great technique and a great set-ball delivery. Those type of players are worth their weight in gold and after another year of development, we’ll see where we are with him.”

With Alex Iwobi still unable to discover his best form on Merseyside, the opportunity for Hughes to impress could be just around the corner, and his breakthrough may well be the catalyst Everton need to resurrect their faltering campaign.
