Indian government distances itself from IPL

The Indian government has distanced itself from the results of the IPL auction, where none of the 11 Pakistan players up for sale attracted any bid. Insisting that the IPL was an independent commercial enterprise, India’s sports minister MS Gill told reporters: “IPL is not only a cricket league but it is also a commercial enterprise and the government of India and the sports ministry has nothing to do with them.”Gill’s statement was a reaction to claims of “discriminatory treatment” made by his counterpart Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, the Pakistan sports minister. “I have phoned the sports minister of India and recorded a protest over the unjust and discriminatory treatment meted out to the Pakistani cricketers,” Jakhrani told . “It is indeed a matter of disrespect of Pakistani heroes, who are the champions of Twenty20 World Cup.”Pakistani ministries of sports, interior and foreign affairs had given political and security clearance to Pakistani players in time to play.”SM Krishna, India’s foreign minister, echoed Gill’s comment. “Government has nothing to do with IPL, on selection of players and various exercises that are connected with it. So, Pakistan will have to draw a line between where Government of India is connected and where Government of India is an actor,” he said.”Seventeen Pakistani cricketers were issued requisite Indian visas at very short notice in December 2009 and January 2010 to participate in IPL 2010,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. “Two visas were issued in Islamabad, three in Wellington and 12 in Sydney, where the concerned Pakistani cricketers had applied while touring New Zealand and Australia, respectively. Based on a request from the Pakistan Cricket Board to High Commission of India in Islamabad, the MEA facilitated necessary clearances from other ministries. The participation or absence of Pakistani cricketers in a commercial event of the nature of IPL is, thus, a matter not within the purview of the government.Eleven Pakistan players – several of whom have expressed outrage at not being picked – were shortlisted for the IPL auction in Mumbai. Pakistan’s players had received NOCs from the PCB to participate in the tournament after the Pakistan government’s various ministries had cleared them to tour India. However, the uncertainty over the strained relations between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008 appears to have prompted franchises to wield restraint at the auction.

WWFC must keep Adama Traore

Wolves manager Bruno Lage must keep winger Adama Traore at the club beyond the upcoming January window, with the Spaniard linked with a potential move to fellow Premier League outfit Leeds United as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid.

What’s the story?

Although Leeds are reportedly interested in Traore, Eurosport journalist Dean Jones has claimed that their “budget won’t be able to stretch to Traore” and a swoop for the Spaniard may have to be waited for until the summer.

As for Real, the Barcelona youth product has reportedly expressed his desire to return to his homeland and his agent has already contacted the Spanish giants.

With potential suitors elsewhere, it does beg the question as to whether or not the West Midlands club should hold onto a player that, on one side is yet to score this season, but on the other has previously received top praise, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola once labelling the 25-year-old as “a motorcycle.”

Wolves should keep Traore

It would be a disaster if Wolves allowed Traore to leave Molineux next month. The statistics don’t support that claim, with zero goals or assists in the Premier League so far this term. However, the Spaniard offers Lage plenty of pace and physicality, traits that the Portuguese’s squad isn’t necessarily blessed with.

Moreover, it isn’t as though the £27m-rated talisman is failing to bag in a high-scoring outfit, in fact, Wolves are the English top-flight’s second-lowest scorers with just 12 goals in 16 matches. Granted, Traore hasn’t contributed any of them and that is of course where he will have to improve.

We have seen what the 25-year-old is capable of before though, particularly in the 2019/20 season where he was “thrilling.”

That campaign saw Traore score a career-best four Premier League goals, three of which being against Manchester City.

You don’t go on to make over 100 Premier League appearances for a club without talent. Yes, it’s clear in which department Traore must improve but, given that his side are seriously struggling to score goals, Lage must keep the winger at Molineux for the remainder of the season at the very least.

After all, in the words of Tim Sherwood, he is a player who “destroys anyone.”

Leeds: Whites keen on Ross Barkley

Leeds United, Everton and Newcastle United have been linked with a move for midfielder Ross Barkley, TEAMtalk report.

The Lowdown: Barkley’s struggles…

Barkley, who shares the same agency as Whites midfielder Adam Forshaw, has had his struggles in 2021.

He spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, however, he started just four of Villa’s final 15 Premier League games last season.

The Englishman’s last appearance for his country came over two years ago and he’s failed to make an impact under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge during the current campaign.

Tuchel recently labelled Barkley as ‘strong’, but he has started him just twice in all competitions this season, and it seems as if Victor Orta is keen to bring the attacking midfielder back to Elland Road following a loan spell in 2013.

The Latest: Whites interest

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are thought to be leading the chase for the 27-year-old’s services.

The report adds that Leeds and Everton are also keen, with an initial loan with option to buy preferred.

Barkley is still hopeful of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad in 2022 and has 18 months remaining on his Chelsea contract.

The Verdict: Avoid…

Leeds are fairly short of midfield options at this moment in time and haven’t signed a central midfielder on a permanent deal under Marcelo Bielsa. However, bringing in a player like Barkley, who is on big money and was labelled as ‘lazy’ by Roy Keane when playing for England, could be a risk.

He hasn’t exactly been a regular in the Premier League over recent years and has a lengthy injury history, so there’s no guarantee he’d hit the ground running in Bielsa’s high-intensity Leeds side.

Perhaps the Whites would be better off looking for a more versatile midfielder similar to Mateusz Klich, who would be able to provide cover in multiple areas such as an eight or 10.

Nyoka's skipped key issues – Gauteng board

The Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) has come out strongly in response to Cricket South Africa president Mtutuzeli Nyoka’s statement on the issue of mismanagement of the 2009 IPL

Cricinfo staff13-Jul-2009

The Wanderers has temporarily been stripped of its status as an international venue by Cricket South Africa•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) has come out strongly in response to Cricket South Africa president Mtutuzeli Nyoka’s statement on the issue of mismanagement of the 2009 IPL, saying he did not touch upon several key issues raised by the GCB. It also said there were no grounds for it to apologise to the BCCI and IPL, as sought by Nyoka, as it had not referred to either body in its allegations. The GCB statement said it would formally reply to Nyoka’s statement after it received a response from the board’s Audit and Risk Committee to a letter sent on June 4.”In that letter we stated that, on the basis of information that was known to us and available to us at that time, we believed that CSA had been exposed to material financial risk by the manner in which CSA had conducted contractual negotiations with the IPL,” Barry Skjoldhammer, the GCB chairman, said in a statement.Nyoka’s statement, he said, did not address issues raised by the GCB’s letter to the Audit and Risk Committee such as CSA’s refusal to “to make details of its contract with the IPL known to GCB” and its non-participation “in negotiations between GCB and the IPL, notwithstanding that CSA was the only party with knowledge of the contract under which the IPL claimed to have acquired rights from CSA over the Wanderers Stadium, all commercial and media rights to which are controlled by GCB.”The Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg was suspended from holding international matches under the auspices of CSA and the national board said the ban would be lifted only after the GCB apologised for its allegations and accepted the terms and conditions for hosting games. The GCB, however, said it had made no reference to the BCCI or made any “any evaluation of or comment on the IPL’s behaviour” in their letter. The GCB and CSA had several differences over the running of the IPL; the issues ranged from the sharing of VIP suites to the price of alcohol. At one point there was a doubt that the semi-finals and final would be held at the Wanderers as scheduled and after the tournament the GCB investigated the possibility of counterfeit tickets being sold at the final.Skjoldhammer’s statement said the GCB had been trying to negotiate the terms and conditions for hosting matches at the Wanderers for seven years but CSA had “persistently declined or failed to engage GCB in any form of direct discussions”. He added that if the GCB accepted the terms and conditions, in their current form, CSA was trying to impose, it would “destroy the financial viability” of the Wanderers Stadium.”The proposed CSA model would also undermine GCB’s viability as a provincial cricket union that serves the interests of amateur cricket through hundreds of club league teams and many thousands of players, as well as hundreds of schools and development programmes reaching many thousand children,” the GCB statement said. It concluded by saying that it was not in the interests of anyone for Wanderers to be stripped of its international status and the board would “exercise its rights as an affiliated member of CSA to ensure that CSA observes its own corporate governance procedures relative to such decisions.”

Wolves are interested in Bilbao’s Vivian

Despite currently sitting in 12th place in the Premier League table with three wins and four defeats under their belt so far this season, Wolves boast a respectable defensive record with just six goals conceded in seven games, the same as Liverpool and Manchester United.

Even with this current defensive record, it seems as though Wolves boss is already eyeing up a potential move for a new defender to bring to Molineux.

What’s the latest?

It has recently been reported by Fichajes (via Sport Witness) that Wolves and fellow Premier League side West Ham United are interested in signing Athletic Bilbao defender Dani Vivian.

The 22-year-old, who has a release clause of €40m (£34m), has played in seven out of Bilbao’s eight La Liga games so far this season, conceding just two goals in the process.

Interestingly, the only La Liga game that Vivian did not play in is the only league match that Bilbao has lost so far this season in a 2-1 defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

Long-term option?

Vivian’s performances in La Liga have earned him an overall performance rating of 7/10 according to WhoScored, making him one of Bilbao’s highest-rated players so far this season.

Taking all of this into account, it’s easy to see why Wolves and West Ham would be interested in signing him.

He’s not a prolific header of the ball with just 0.9 aerial duels won per match but he is an efficient tackler, winning 1.6 challenges a game. That would rank him second out of Wolves’ centre-halves this term with only Max Kilman producing more.

That makes him an attractive signing but there is another reason too. In our view, given the age of current Wolves centre-backs Willy Boly (30) and Romain Saiss (31) we feel that Vivian could be a good option to replace one of the pair and be a useful long-term option for the Old Gold given the Spaniard’s young age.

Moving forward, if Wolves see an opportunity to sign Vivian in the upcoming January transfer window or the next summer window, this is definitely something the club should be looking to explore ahead of their fellow Premier League side West Ham.

Until then, Lage will have to make sure his side can start picking up wins in the league on a consistent basis and not concede too many goals. If they start leaking strikes they could be in danger of being in a relegation battle, rather than finishing in the top half of the table.

Australia's Twenty20 squad a risk for Ashes

John Buchanan believes Australia should have picked a squad of specialists for the World Twenty20

Cricinfo staff07-May-2009John Buchanan, the former national coach, believes Australia should have picked a squad of specialists for the World Twenty20 instead of relying on regular campaigners in a move that could harm their Ashes defence. Buchanan, whose side Kolkata is struggling at the bottom of the current IPL, would have pushed for Adam Gilchrist or Matthew Hayden to lead the side in England next month rather than having Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke in charge so close to a major series.”If I was a selector I would not be risking, wherever possible, key Ashes players such as Ponting, Clarke, Hussey, Hughes, Haddin, Watson, Clark, Katich, Siddle, Johnson,” he told the Age. “Have them embark on a combination of rest, physical and then technical preparation for the Ashes while this tournament is underway.”Buchanan wanted more specialists in the unit, including Shane Harwood, Cameron White and Shaun Tait, while recalling old stars. “Selectors should have been talking with former players to make themselves available for this particular event,” he said. “I would be looking at Warne or Gilchrist as captain.”After two seasons in charge of an IPL team, Buchanan said the current Twenty20 format was not suitable for regular international competition. “Given the ICC have chosen to cash in on the excitement of Twenty20 and the potential revenues that can be made, then Australia or any country should treat it for what it is,” he said. “It is a one-off tournament that will occur periodically in the world tournament schedule, and in my opinion has little to do with long-term developments of player squads apart from the inclusion of possibly one or two under-19 or ‘new’ players who are included for experience around an Australian environment.”Australia’s 15-man outfit was chosen on Tuesday and included Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee and Shane Watson. The opener David Warner was the only Twenty20 specialist in the line-up.

QPR dealt Sam McCallum injury blow

Queens Park Rangers have been dealt a potential blow regarding the fitness of Sam McCallum ahead of their upcoming Championship fixture.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by West London Sport, QPR have been assessing the Norwich City loanee after he limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury in the club’s Carabao Cup penalty shootout victory over Everton on Tuesday evening.

And, while the report goes on to state that, at present, the extent of the left-back’s injury is not known, should the 21-year-old indeed have damaged his hamstring and is subsequently sidelined for a considerable amount of time, his absence would cause Mark Warburton with a major problem, as fellow left-back Lee Wallace is also currently out of action due to injury.

Warburton will be gutted

Considering how impressive McCallum has looked on the left-hand side of the QPR defence in recent weeks, as well as the aforementioned selection headache the defender’s absence would cause Warburton, the potential injury of the 21-year-old would undoubtedly leave the 59-year-old manager gutted.

Indeed, over his four Championship appearances for the Rs so far this season, the £3.15m-rated man has scored two goals, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The loanee has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, 0.5 clearances and winning 5.5 duels per match, with these returns seeing the £5k-per-week defender earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.92.

As such, McCallum’s potential absence, particularly considering Wallace’s own injury and the fact the west London side face a trip to one of the promotion favourites in West Bromwich Albion on Friday evening, is sure to come as a major blow for Warburton, who will undoubtedly be hoping his side can take the confidence of a win over Everton into the clash at The Hawthorns.
