We can expect more Test action in Harare from Tuesday, with Hamilton Masakadza confirming Zimbabwe will take the field•AFP

Zimbabwe’s players will definitely play the second Test against Pakistan, putting to bed fears of a boycott, their stand-in captain Hamilton Masakadza confirmed on Saturday. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the players received some outstanding payments on Friday, though the specifics are yet unknown. The players, through their union, had been threatening a boycott during the Pakistan series since it began three weeks ago because of unpaid salaries, but have not followed through with any of their ultimatums so far. They had initially threatened to boycott the final ODI of the tour, but Zimbabwe Cricket’s negotiations with the players bought the board more time. The deadline for payment was extended to the eve of the first Test, and then to September 6.The second Test beginning on September 10 could also be Zimbabwe’s last of 2013, with Sri Lanka Cricket saying ZC had sought a postponement of their bilateral series scheduled for October.ZC held an emergency meeting on Friday during which a variety of issues including payments and Sri Lanka’s tour were said to have been discussed. The deputy managing director was also said to have had a meeting with former ZC chief Ozias Bvute, who holds board positions at both Air Zimbabwe and Metbank. It is believed ZC was seeking another loan. They are already steeped in debt with the latest figure reflecting around US$15 million in the red.The board’s staff had not been paid and ZC had apparently informed them in an email that they will not be paid salaries in order to open up any available funds for the players. Both players and the staff have outstanding dues for their July and August salaries. In another move to cut costs, ZC had shifted the venue for the second Test from Bulawayo to Harare – by doing so, the board will save more than US$50,000 on travel and hotel expenses. While the lack of funds at ZC is believed to have caused tension, the mood remains a light one in the lead-up to the second Test. The players were relaxed post-match and enjoyed drinks and a debrief in the change room while groundstaff began work for the second Test. They will not train on Sunday but will resume preparations on Monday.

Teams clash again after Super Over thriller

Match facts

Tuesday, April 9, 2013
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)

The Big Picture

With two wins in two games, including the remarkable Super Over victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, Sunrisers Hyderabad have begun IPL 2013 well. Their consistency will be tested once again in a rematch of that thrilling game, this time in Bangalore. For one, they will have to adjust quickly to a pitch that’s different from the sluggish surface in Hyderabad. The Chinnaswamy track is far more conducive to pace and movement, and while that could give Sunrisers an advantage – with their attack of Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma and Thisara Perera – it could also expose the weaknesses in their batting early on. Perera’s and Hanuma Vihari’s innings aside, the Sunrisers have had no other contributions of note in their matches so far.Royal Challengers have similar problems. Like in their first match, their total in Hyderabad was built around two batsmen, as the others were dismissed in single digits. Tillakaratne Dilshan’s form is a worry for Royal Challengers and it remains to be seen if they will persevere with him.AB de Villiers, who missed Royal Challengers’ first two matches due to his cricket commitments in South Africa will arrive tomorrow. According to a franchise spokesperson, de Villiers “will be available for selection”. While his presence will boost a struggling batting side, it will mean a new combination of overseas players. Both teams have a settled bowling line-up. For Royal Challengers, Vinay Kumar has excelled in the death overs, though he slipped up in the Super Over on Sunday. Henriques and Jaydev Unadkat have been promising at the start. For Sunrisers, Amit Mishra and Dale Steyn have impressed, while Perera has bowled important spells, curbing the flow of runs.

Players to watch

Cameron White hasn’t had the most memorable season. He lost Australia’s Twenty20 captaincy to George Bailey after a run of poor performances in the Big Bash League. However, the two sixes in the Super Over might be the impetus he needs to score big for Sunrisers.Jaydev Unadkat has bowled well with the new ball and the pitch at the Chinnaswamy Stadium should help him extract bounce and some movement. He bowled a good ball to dismiss Kumar Sangakkara at a crucial stage of the match and would look to continue in the same vein against Sunrisers on Tuesday.

Quotes

“From a batting point of view, myself definitely included, we have to make the bowlers’ job a bit easier and bat better.”

Kerala's Jagadeesh stranded on 199

A wrap of Group C games in the fifth round of the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Dec-2012
ScorecardVA Jagadeesh was stranded on 199, agonisingly short of what would have been his maiden double-century in first-class cricket, as Kerala were bowled out for 314 by Services on the second day in Delhi.Kerala began the day on 192 for 5, with Jagadeesh batting on 126. Like on the first day, Jagadeesh got little support from his team-mates and batsmen came and went at the other end. From 240 for 5, Kerala slipped to 260 for 8. Jagadeesh did most of the scoring and motored towards a double but lost last man Sandeep Warrier in the 135th over of the innings.Warrier returned to strike early blows in Services’ reply, reducing them to 30 for 2. They were 84 for 2 at stumps.
ScorecardDuvvarapu Shivkumar scored his maiden first-class century to lead Andhra to a sizeable total against Goa in Visakhapatnam. Resuming on 12 on the second morning, Shivkumar went on to make an unbeaten 106, leading his team to 393. He and Amol Muzumdar extended their sixth-wicket stand to 124 before Muzumdar was lbw to Saurabh Bandekar, who finished with 5 for 107. Bandekar’s new-ball partner, Hanumant Gadekar, claimed 4 for 97.Shivkumar had success with the ball too, removing Goa opener Swapnil Asnodkar cheaply. Sagun Kamat remained unbeaten on 41 as Goa ended day two on 72 for 1.
ScorecardAfter scoring a half-century in Jammu & Kashmir’s first innings, Parvez Rasool took career best figures, his 7 for 41 securing a 158-run first innings lead against Assam in Guwahati. The second day began with J&K on 240 for 7 and the tail contributed to stretch the total to 323 before they were dismissed in the 110th over. Assam bowler Arup Das also took career-best figures of 6 for 87.Assam’s openers Dheeraj Jadhav and Pallavkumar Das added 55 for the first wicket, and Jadhav’s half-century led his team to the secure position of 126 for 2. Jadhav’s dismissal, however, triggered a slide during which Assam lost eight wickets for 39 runs in about 17 overs. Rasool took six of the eight.
ScorecardAfter beinning the second day on 325 for 4, Tripura’s middle and lower order added only 116 more runs in Nadaun, but by stumps they stood a great chance of taking the first-innings lead. Manisankar Murasingh and Rana Dutta took two wickets each to reduce Himachal Pradesh to 111 for 5.

Boucher 'unlikely' to play cricket in future

Mark Boucher, former South Africa wicketkeeper, has said that it is “unlikely” he will play professional cricket in the near future as the healing process to his left eye continues

Firdose Moonda08-Aug-2012Mark Boucher, former South Africa wicketkeeper, has said that it is “unlikely” he will play professional cricket in the near future as the healing process to his left eye continues. Boucher’s eyeball was lacerated last month on the first day of South Africa’s tour to England, when a bail ricocheted off the stumps and hit him during the tour match against Somerset in Taunton. He was forced to move his intended retirement, which he had planned after the Lord’s Test, forward and returned home to South Africa to begin treatment. Boucher underwent one operation in England followed up by five more procedures in Cape Town.Although it was initially reported that he could pick up movement and detect light with the injured eye and he was hopeful of making a return at franchise or amateur level, Boucher’s cricket playing days seem over, for the foreseeable future at least.”I have lost the lens, iris and pupil in my left eye. There was severe damage to my retina. I have had two major operations and four blood draining operations in the past three weeks and physically, at times, I have been in a lot of pain,” Boucher said at his first press conference since the incident, at Newlands, where he also revealed how much his life had changed in recent weeks.”It does get uncomfortable at times and being a sportsman, I want to be active and outdoors but, without a pupil, I find any amount of sunlight very harsh and have thus been restricted to the confines of my home. It is unlikely that I will play any professional cricket again in the near future, which is very unfortunate as I was looking forward to contributing as a player for the Cobras. The risk of additional damage to my left eye or even damage to the other eye, doesn’t warrant it.”Having already considered the end of his career before the tour to England, Boucher had future projects in the works some of which have now been fast-forwarded. He has invested in his “passion for wildlife” with South African Breweries and launched the SAB Boucher Non-Profit Company, which aims to help fund the fight against rhino poaching in Africa.Boucher has been vocal in his support for saving the rhino, which has come under severe threat in recent years. More than 900 rhinos have been killed across Africa in the last three years and the species is facing extinction in some areas. Boucher and team-mates past and present, such as Paul Harris, Dale Steyn and Justin Kemp, took part in a conservation event at the end of June to raise awareness for the rhino and Boucher’s involvement will continue through his new foundation. He has also started a wine-label with long-time friend Jacques Kallis. The wine, called the Innings, went on shelves in South African stores last weekend and reported good sales. Kallis also had the label stuck on his bat and pointed to it in celebration, along with gesturing to his eye, after his century at the Oval.Boucher’s role in the Test XI has been taken up by AB de Villiers in the interim which has allowed South Africa to play the extra batsmen in JP Duminy. Wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile is expected to eventually take over as Boucher’s permanent replacement.Boucher has been monitoring the on-going series between South Africa and England and tweeting his thoughts. He has also been in contact with the squad and captain Graeme Smith hinted that they would seek Boucher’s advice on occasions, given the experience he gained over the years and the fighting way he approached the game. That fight lives on in Boucher and his parting words to the media were ones of hope, despite his current circumstances.”I don’t want people to feel sorry for me. Injuries happen and this could have happened earlier on in my career. I am incredibly grateful for the length of career that I have had and the amazing things I have experienced and people I have met during that time. This is just another challenge in my life and something that I will be working to overcome.”

Hilfenhaus and Lee seal bonus-point win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMichael Hussey and Peter Forrest were involved in a century stand•AFP

Ben Hilfenhaus and Brett Lee splintered India to return Australia to the top of the table with a 110-run victory that reaped a bonus point at the Gabba. On a day when Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar both glimpsed their mortality in the limited-overs game, Australia’s 5 for 288 proved far too tall a target for India’s batsmen, who looked as uncomfortable as ever when faced by Brisbane’s bounce and a home side recovering from two straight losses.Making use of a hard, fast pitch and the early swing offered by the new ball, Lee and Hilfenhaus nipped out four wickets between them to slide India to 4 for 36, and had snared eight by the end of the night. Hilfenhaus was playing his first ODI since November 2009, in place of the ill Clint McKay, and made a strong case for his retention by moving the ball at good pace on a disciplined line to take five wickets for the first time. He had an ideal counterpoint in Lee, who offered slippery pace and plenty of aggression.Tendulkar played a particularly fretful innings, struck on the helmet by Lee, caught at third man off Hilfenhaus. Soon after, Kohli lingered unhappily at the crease after video evidence was used to confirm he had been caught at slip by David Hussey. MS Dhoni’s innings proved merely a parting shot as the match faded out.Ponting won the toss in what is expected to be his last match in charge before Michael Clarke returns. David Warner made a wasteful exit for a swift 43, Ponting struggled badly for placement and occupied 26 balls for 7, and Matthew Wade fought his way to 45 only to give it up with a tame return catch.Peter Forrest and Michael Hussey righted the ship with a century partnership, but Christian and David Hussey made equally vital contributions with a stand of 65 in the final six overs. Michael Hussey’s innings might have been over on 1, when MS Dhoni appealed for a stumping. Replays showed Hussey may have had some of his back foot safely behind the line, and there was some surprise when the red “out” signal flashed on the big screen. However Hussey’s trudge off the field was swiftly aborted by the umpires, as it emerged that the wrong verdict from the third umpire Bruce Oxenford had somehow been relayed.Needing close to six runs per over, India needed a strong start, but were unlikely to get one from the moment Lee found a way past Gautam Gambhir. In the Tests Gambhir had often been out fencing at deliveries going across him, but Lee’s delivery gave him little choice, starting to bend in before seaming the other way off the track to clip the outside edge.

Smart stats

  • Australia’s victory margin of 110 runs makes it the seventh time that they have managed a 100-run-plus win over India. Four of those wins have come in ODIs in Australia.

  • Australia’s total of 288 is the joint fifth-highest for them in ODIs against India at home. Their highest total overall against India is 359 in Johannesburg and Sydney.

  • Ben Hilfenhaus followed up his excellent Test series by picking up his first five-wicket haul in ODIs. His 5 for 33 is seventh on the list of best bowling performances for Australia against India.

  • Matthew Wade held five catches in the Indian innings making it the 13th instance of an Australian wicketkeeper taking five or more catches in an ODI. Adam Gilchrist has achieved the feat on nine occasions.

  • Michael Hussey became the 13th Australian batsman to reach the 5000-run mark. His average of 50.52 is the second-highest after Michael Bevan among Australian batsmen with 5000-plus runs.

  • The partnership run-rate of 10.83 between Daniel Christian and David Hussey for the sixth wicket is the fifth-highest for Australia for fifty-plus stands.

Tendulkar’s unhappy tour gained another chapter of discontent against the new ball. Struck a hefty blow on the head by a Lee bouncer, he struggled to lay a bat on Hilfenhaus’ away swing, and when he did connect, the ball floated down to Xavier Doherty, who had dropped Kohli the ball before. Tendulkar seems even further away from the barrier of 100 international centuries than he had been at the start of the summer. Not for the first time, Kohli had looked distracted by crowd chants in the field, and he carried that anger with him to the crease. He watched Rohit Sharma’s undoing, waving his bat at Lee’s bounce and away movement, then took his dismissal for 12, via Hussey’s low catch, as something approaching a personal slight. He waited for some time after the verdict to leave the field.Suresh Raina sallied forth to deposit Mitchell Starc into the stands. However Christian was delivering a neat spell, and he gained the break with a delivery running across Raina that caught a nick.Dhoni went on to 56 as the required rate climbed, but his dismissal, pulling Hilfenhaus to midwicket, signalled the end of formal resistance.During the Australian innings, Wade and Warner found the early going slow against tight bowling from Vinay Kumar and Zaheer Khan. Wade enjoyed an escape off the second ball of the match, edging Zaheer towards Tendulkar at first slip, only for Rohit to dive across from second and knock the ball away from the man best placed to catch it. Warner began to look fluent, but he was to curse himself with some venom when he chipped the last ball of the 13th over to a waiting midwicket. The ensuing passage was dominated by Ponting’s struggles. He made a deliberate start, defending staunchly against Raina’s modest offerings, then found himself struggling to find the boundaries to counterbalance this early conservatism. One charge down the wicket resulted in an edge to third man, and Ponting was still searching for momentum when he picked up a Zaheer delivery and sent it looping into deep midwicket’s hands. His scores for the series now read 2, 1, 6, 2 and 7.Hussey and Forrest fought with determination and intelligence, finding the odd boundary but mainly keeping the innings going with their running between the wickets. Apart from his stumping reprieve, Hussey was also dropped twice, while Forrest endured numerous periods without free-scoring but lifted his rate as he went.Their stand was worth 100 when Hussey fell to combination of urgency and fatigue, swinging Irfan into the deep, and in the same over Forrest did likewise, ending another innings of promise by the prospective Test batsman. David Hussey and Christian added some clean blows to swell the total in the final overs, distorting Vinay’s figures by taking his last over for 18 runs. Another 15 were spirited away from the last, leaving India with a chase that proved well beyond their means.

LANCE!
