Rain washes out chase one over short

New Zealand were denied the chance of a series-levelling victory, and the patient crowd left without witnessing a close finish, as rain had the final say at Edgbaston one over before Duckworth-Lewis would have been able to calculate a result. With Brendon McCullum marshalling the chase, New Zealand would have needed seven runs from the 20th over to be at the winning score of 134, but the umpires finally decided the rain was too heavy and everyone trooped off.It was an unsatisfactory end to a frustrating day, which began with a four-hour delay for steady rain, included a 30-minute dinner break when the priority should have been to complete the match, and finished with New Zealand wondering if they will ever get a stroke of luck on this tour. England wouldn’t have given up their hopes of winning either, but will clearly be the happier side at the late abandonment. For much of New Zealand’s 23-over chase, England appeared second favourites as McCullum played a calm innings, adding 54 in seven overs with Ross Taylor. However, as the light faded even more and the rain began to return, the gap between runs required and balls remaining grew wider. Scott Styris, not accustomed to the murky conditions, found it difficult to force the medium-pacers away.Crucially, though, 10 came off the 19th over, bowled by Luke Wright, but McCullum was left to see his undefeated 60 off 51 balls come to nothing. Although it won’t be at the forefront of New Zealand’s minds in the immediate aftermath, they will reflect that they played a good deal better than at Chester-le-Street.Their fielding held up well throughout England’s innings – Daniel Flynn and Gareth Hopkins both holding fine diving catches – and the bowlers remained cool as the batsmen began flexing their muscles. This was especially true of Grant Elliott, making his ODI debut as New Zealand tried to cover for the absence of Jacob Oram, and his three wickets were some of England’s most dangerous hitters. When Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah added 46 in five overs after the rain interruption, England were on course for around 175, but the last six wickets fell for 36 runs.England’s major positive came from Wright, who struck his second ODI fifty off 33 balls and his first as an opener to show why the selectors want to give him an extended run in the position. Michael Mason’s second over cost 20, including a clean straight six and an even mightier blow, down on one knee, high over midwicket.Wright’s half-century came in the next over when he drilled Elliott through mid-off. Flynn came within inches of losing his front teeth for the second time on the tour as a horrid bounce took the ball flying past his face. Elliott, though, held his nerve and collected his first ODI wicket when Wright carved a catch down to long-off.The innings had given the crowd plenty to cheer after Kevin Pietersen couldn’t reproduce his Chester-le-Street thrills. Ian Bell, the hometown star, fell for a duck to third ball of the match but the crowd didn’t appear too disappointed as Pietersen entered to huge cheers. He was quickly using his feet to the seamers and mowed an early boundary over midwicket. The expectation will be on him to repeat his feats from Sunday each time he walks out, but it won’t always happen. On this occasion he struggled to find his timing and drove straight to mid-off for 13.Two of England’s young allrounders were now in charge of the innings, but Ravi Bopara was run out shortly after the resumption when he cut to cover and raced down the pitch, only to see Collingwood hadn’t responded. Bopara turned, but Collingwood suddenly put his foot down and almost caught up. The run out was clear, although TV was needed to decide who departed. Bopara lost out by a few inches. However, the wicket may have been a blessing for England as it brought in Shah, who hit the ball as cleanly as he did during his 49 off 25 balls at Chester-le-Street. It continued here with an effortless flick over deep square-leg before he was deceived by a good slower-ball from Elliott, who also removed Collingwood thanks to an excellent diving catch by Flynn at deep cover. An intriguing chase was set up and for 19 overs it kept everyone interested. In the end, though, the feeling wasn’t a rush of excitement at a close finish but at a lot of effort for nothing.

Pundit believes West Ham star Rice could be worth up to £100m

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League forward Dean Windass believes West Ham’s Declan Rice could be worth up to £100m in this current market.

Rice was easily one of the best defensive midfielders in English football’s top flight last season. As per WhoScored, he averaged 1.8 interceptions per game, putting him in the top 10 for that category out of all the players who featured regularly during that campaign.

The 22-year-old is now being heavily linked with a move to West Ham’s London rivals Chelsea, with Athletic journalist Simon Johnson recently suggesting that it is a deal that could happen in this transfer window in an update on Twitter.

On how much he thinks Rice is worth, Windass told FFC in an exclusive interview:

“He’s got to be up there, 80, 90, 100m. I think for Declan Rice, if Arsenal, Tottenham or Chelsea come running, you can’t turn it down.”

Looking at Rice’s interception numbers again, in Chelsea’s squad, only N’Golo Kante averaged more with two per game. The former Blues academy player and the Frenchman, what a sturdy midfield partnership that could be.

There is a long way to go, though, before Thomas Tuchel can even think about deploying such a midfield duo. West Ham do not want to sell Rice and hold most if not all of the cards here, with the England international still having three years left to run on his contract.

Hursley Park so close to upsetting league leaders

Hursley Park came within a hairsbreadth of shattering Purbrook’s Southern Electric Premier League Division 3 championship dream in a reduced-overs thriller at The Quarters. After seemingly being batted out of the contest by South African opener Will Prozesky – whose superbly constructed 125 helped Purbrook post a formidable 268-8 in 50 overs – they came within an ace of a memorable victory.Set to get a revised target score of 215 off a rain-trimmed 40 overs, Hursley had Purbrook on the ropes as Paul Edwards crisply compiled the second century of the match. And appeared to have victory in their sights with six runs required off Prozesky’s final over. But, with Hursley on 213-8 and two balls remaining, Edwards (106) was run out attempting a bye to wicket keeper Andy Mengham.Ross Cambray and Tom Burns successfully scrambled a bye off Prozesky’s final ball. But, with the field in frenzied chaos, Cambray returned for a potentially match-winning second and was run out, leaving Hursley’s reply at 214-9 …. and Purbrook the victors under Premier League regulations where a tie cannot occur where a fraction of a run is involved. The outcome meant the probable end of Hursley’s promotion prospects – but Purbrook requiring ten points from Saturday’s visit by Ventnor to pip St Cross Symondians to the title.St Cross remain second after crushing Hook & Newnham Basics by eight wickets at the King George V Ground, Hook.Prozesky, who hopes that distant Scottish ancestry will aid his prospects of securing a professional contract in England, underlined his class with a chanceless and technically superb century. The 22-year old all-rounder from Pretoria acknowledged the importance of this first v third fixture to Purbrook, whom he has transformed from an "above-average" unit into a side poised to lift the Division 3 crown.Losing Mike Hennessy and Ian Hunter cheaply, the South African went about compiling his runs with a careful (instead of carefree) air, placing shots in the gaps and along the ground.Craig Williams (28) provided reliable third-wicket support but, when Hursley skipper Rob Lowe (5-78) created significant inroads into the Purbrook middle-order, Prozesky had to go it alone.Spinner Lowe had Purbrook in some difficulty at an uncertain 147-6 when Prozesky, already into his 60’s, opened up, unleashing a stream of sixes and fours across and over Hursley’s spacious boundary. He was on 91 – and in sight of his third century of the summer – when a heavy thundershower prompted a half-hour delay, 11 overs before tea.But there was no rain respite for Hursley as Prozesky powered past his century and on to 125, an innings which contained three 6s and 13 fours. It took the South African’s run tally for the season to 924 – so far this season he has hit 36 sixes and 109 fours – and to within sight of Robin Smith’s all-time Southern League record of 1,015 runs for Trojans in 1982.Purbrook didn’t let up after he had gone – Graham McCoy (35 not out and Mengham (23 not out) helping the Premier 3 leaders plunder 96 runs off the last ten overs to take the visitors on to 256-8.Hursley needed to score at a rate of 5.36 runs an over to get home and, after a wicket brace by Graham McCoy (2-38), it didn’t look on.Edwards and Lowe (20) came together at 49-3 and added an important 40 to leave Hursley requiring 100 for victory of the last 13 overs.Edwards was timing the ball sweetly – all too often for his liking direct to Purbrook’s eager fielders – but notched his first SEPL 50 in three seasons. But it was Bradford & Leeds University student Ben Smyth (37) who really fired Hursley’s run chase. The pair ran well between the wickets before Smyth holed out in the deep in the 36th over with Hursley 173-5 and still 42 runs adrift.Kelvan Finch (2-23) promptly took two wickets in the next over to drop the response to 184-7.But Edwards, in full flow with some delightful shots off his legs, took a critical 18 runs off Wayne Musselwhite’s 38th over to lift the total to 202-8.He reached his century as six runs came off Finch’s penultimate over, leaving Prozesky to shoulder the responsibility of bowling the final over of an absorbing contest.Three runs came off the South African’s initial three deliveries to set up that frantic finish.Kiwi Mark Parker hit an unbeaten 75 to guide St Cross Symondians to an eight wicket win at Hook & Newnham Basics. Will Mariner (3-16) and Stuart Charman (3-62) took the bowling credits as Hook were dismissed for 171 (Vince Gardner 50).Havant II and Gosport Borough also won, with Redlynch & Hale relegated after losing at Hartley Wintney.

Glamorgan and Steve James enjoy run feast at Chelmsford

Glamorgan and their captain Steve James had a record breaking day on the second day of their Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford

Andrew Hignell26-Jul-2002Glamorgan and their captain Steve James had a record breaking day on the second day of their Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford.James compiled a magnificent 235* as his team raced to 505-6 to gain an overall lead of 274 over a lacklustre Essex side, who in the course of the day were hit by injuries to wicket-keeper James Foster and batsman Aftab Habib.James recorded the sixth double century of his career and his 235* is the highest ever score by a Glamorgan batsman against Essex, beating Jimmy Maher`s 217 at Cardiff last year.On the first day, Essex had struggled under a heavy cloud cover against the accurate Glamorgan attack, but in sunny and cloudless conditions, the Glamorgan batsmen, led by skipper James, feasted on the home attack. During the afternoon session, James, together with Mike Powell and Matthew Maynard, added 217 in just 38 overs between lunch and tea as the Glamorgan batsmen cut loose.By the end of the day, Glamorgan had scored 499 runs in the 104 overs – the most they had ever scored in a day`s play in Championship cricket, passing their previous best of 493 against Worcestershire at Abergavenny in 1990.However, there could be even more records to come and there is every prospect of James carrying on batting on Friday morning and beating his own record of 309* for the highest ever individual score by a Glamorgan player, set against Sussex at Colwyn Bay in 2000.”I would be very delighted if I went past my own 309″, James said after Thursday`s play, “and it would be a monumental effort if I did that. But tomorrow I could get out first ball and that would be that. Hopefully, though I can play myself in first thing, and maybe by lunch, I could be near that landmark.”

Gers fans rage at SPFL news

Glasgow Rangers fans are livid as the SPFL revealed their new league sponsor, which will be in effect until the 2025/26 season.

The Gers won the Premiership last season, their first major title in 10 years as they went the whole league campaign unbeaten (BBC).

However, they did so in a league and a footballing pyramid that was without a sponsor after Ladbrokes ended their partnership with the governing body.

Now, though, the SPFL have finally reached an agreement, this time with online car dealer Cinch.

The deal will run until the 2025/26 season, and is said to be the biggest such deal in their eight-year history. However, few supporters were impressed – they noticed cinch have just over 2,000 Twitter followers, for example.

The news was shared on Twitter by the SPFL’s official account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Gers supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the matter.

Let’s see what the Rangers fans had to say about the news below

Pundit can’t see Leeds signing Buendia

Leeds United will be wanting to improve their squad as well as find a replacement for club legend Pablo Hernandez who has left the club, but former midfielder David Norris doesn’t see his former side wanting to sign Emiliano Buendia.

Buendia has been widely tipped to leave Carrow Road this summer for £40 million, and that is despite having just one season of Premier League experience under his belt with Leeds having been credited with a long-standing interest.

Even during that one season in the Premier League, Buendia was an ever-present but failed to really shine on a consistent basis, much like all of Norwich’s side which was why they ultimately had no chance of staying up.

Leeds did spend heavily last summer but all of the players they brought in have been able to adapt to Marcelo Bielsa’s style of management and play, something Norris is not convinced of from what he’s seen of Buendia, as he exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“He’s been in the Premier League before and he did alright, but he was probably the best of a bad bunch, instead of being brilliant.

“I don’t see him as being a great replacement and I expect Leeds to look elsewhere for someone with a little bit more guaranteed quality.”

Buendia has certainly attracted a lot of interest from Premier League clubs but it appears that Arsenal are the front runners, especially if they fail to raise enough money or convince Martin Odegaard to stay at the Emirates.

It may not be in the final third that Bielsa wants to improve given the fact that his attacking options of Raphinha, Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford scored a combined total of 38 goals in the Premier League.

Celtic: Nixon claims Keane wants Hoops job

Alan Nixon believes Roy Keane is desperate to become Celtic’s new manager.

Keane, a former Champions League winner as a player, has been linked with the vacant role in recent months.

The 49-year-old was in talks with the Hoops board in March and was back in the frame for the job a few weeks later.

Eddie Howe appeared to be Keane’s main rival for the job back then, however, a move for the Englishman fell through on Friday, with the Hoops now thought to be in advanced talks with Ange Postecoglou.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-4/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Nixon’s claim on Keane

Nixon was asked about the possibility of Keane landing the job over Postecoglou on Twitter by a Celtic fan on Saturday evening.

The Sun writer replied, dropping a huge three-word claim by believing Keane ‘wants it badly’. However, according to Nixon, the Hoops hierarchy don’t want him.

“Keane wants it badly. But people in power there don’t want him. Shame. Would have been fun.”

The Verdict: Hoops making the right call

Even though Keane seemingly wants to return to management after 10 years away, we think Celtic are making the correct decision by having no interest in giving him the job.

Martin O’Neill appears to be in Dermot Desmond’s ear, staking his claim for Keane to get the job, but it seems even the opinion of a Hoops hero hasn’t persuaded the owner to change his mind.

Celtic have held extensive talks with Postecoglou and have submitted an offer for the Yokohama F. Marinos boss, who was coy on a move to Scotland on Sunday.

Postecoglou has only had a three-month break from management over the last 12 years, so that experience could be a key factor in Celtic looking at him over the Irishman, who has simply been out of the dugout for too long to trust as a reliable option.

Tuffey reigns supreme as ND humble Wellington

Daryl Tuffey left Wellington reeling this morning as the Northern Districts pace bowler ripped through the championship leaders to the tune of seven wickets for 12 runs

Chris Rosie02-Feb-2001Daryl Tuffey left Wellington reeling this morning as the Northern Districts pace bowler ripped through the championship leaders to the tune of seven wickets for 12 runs. And he added an extra four in the afternoon to complete his first 10-wicket match bag as Wellington crumbled to an outright defeat by an innings and 46 runs inside two days.Tuffey found a spot from which he exploited Wellington batting deficiencies as they failed to get into line. If he wasn’t just missing the edge, he was catching it, providing a busy morning for those behind the stumps. Grant Bradburn (3), Robbie Hart (2) and Mark Bailey (1) all shared in the Tuffey bonanza.Only Mark Gillespie, coming in at the fall of the seventh wicket, offered any resistance, contributing an unbeaten 33 to the paltry Wellington total of 78 in reply to Northern’s first-day 283.Tuffey gained his reward with accuracy, pace, lift and movement off a pitch that provided him with more assistance than he might have expected after it had been treated to the Hamilton sun of the first day. At the other end, Simon Doull (two for 30) provided the perfect foil, allowing the Wellington batsmen no relief. With the follow-on enforced, Wellington found little respite in their second innings as they chased 205 to make Northern bat again. This time Joseph Yovich, who had had a bit part in the morning carnage, did the early damage. He removed dangerman Matthew Bell (8) and Selwyn Blackmore (0) in his third over and added Richard Jones’ (2) scalp in his sixth and from there Wellington, at 15 for three, were back on the downward slide. They never recovered. First Stephen Mather (16) and then Chris Nevin (21), with his injured thumb, tried to stay with a solid Grant Donaldson (56) but the Northern bowlers were not to be denied.Tuffey added his four from 22 overs for 54 to his morning bag to give him 11 for the match, his appearance at the bowling crease heralding disarray in the Wellington ranks. Yovich took the last wicket to fall, ending with four for 40 off 22.3 overs. The spinners Bradburn and Bruce Martin chimed in with one each.It is a day Wellington may want to forget but Daryl Tuffey will certainly add to his scrapbook.Talking to CricInfo after the match, he said that it was the sort of pitch on which bowling slightly fuller than usual and accurately brought about the desired effect. There was a nice spot from which they were zipping off. It was particularly satisfying in that he did not believe he had taken best advantage of the conditions when bowling to the Wellington openers late on the first day.Despite his personal achievement, he placed particular emphasis for the team’s success on the bowling partnerships that had developed during the match. “It was Simon bowling maidens at one end while I took wickets at the other in the first innings. In the second, the roles were reversed as Joey took the early wickets.”Bowling, just as much as batting, is about partnerships. We developed good ones today, which we probably have not done in the past.”Of his national aspirations he said he hoped the selectors would take notice. “I have done what they asked – to come back here and take wickets.”
