Charlton boss Lee Bowyer would’ve been mad to jump ship and join Huddersfield

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

When Lee Bowyer took over from Karl Robinson as caretaker manager back in March 2018, Charlton had just one win from their previous eight games.

The former Addicks academy graduate had absolutely no managerial experience prior to stepping into the hotseat, but still managed to lead his side into the playoffs that season with six wins from the club’s last 10 league games – unfortunately, they couldn’t overcome Shrewsbury in the semi-finals.

However, Bowyer has gone from strength to strength as a manager at The Valley and what he has done since taking the reins has been nothing short of astonishing.

He managed to oversee 26 league wins from 46 games last term, and also masterminded a route through the playoffs to see off Sunderland at Wembley and complete a remarkable achievement in just his first full campaign as a manager.

You would forgive the 42-year-old for having a slow start to life back in the Championship given the circumstances, but his Charlton side simply can’t stop winning and currently sit second in the table with four wins and two draws from their first six games.

The supporters are jubilant. Bowyer has restored their faith after years of baffling decisions at board level, and the manager and club seem like an ideal fit for each other.

Bowyer has impressed in the English game so much that Huddersfield are reportedly interested in appointing him as their manager, with Mark Hudson unable to get things back on track after the Terriers sacked Jan Siewert.

If Bowyer accepted this move, questions would have to have been asked.

Luckily for the south Londoners, the former Birmingham midfielder has since said he will be staying at the club, and he would’ve been crazy to think of doing anything other than just that.

It is rare to see such a connection between a fanbase and the manager nowadays, and when you are doing so well and things are going swimmingly at a club so close to you personally, leaving for anywhere else – especially a turbulent Huddersfield side – would be downright lunacy.

Leeds journalist Phil Hay says club would replace Anderlecht-linked Kemar Roofe

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…The Yorkshire Evening Post’s former Leeds United writer Phil Hay is still in the loop with goings-on at Elland Road, and he has provided a four-word response on Twitter when questioned by a fan about whether the Anderlecht-linked Kemar Roofe would be replaced if he left.

What did he say?

Well, reports broke late on Thursday that the Belgian giants were in talks over a move for the 26-year-old, whose current contract with the Championship club is due to run out next summer.

Hay took to Twitter to confirm Vincent Kompany’s men’s interest in the attacker, and was quickly flooded by a deluge of comments from supporters.

One asked the journalist if Leeds would replace Roofe if he did end up going before the deadline next Thursday, and he replied: “They would have to.”

No surprise

All of Leeds’ summer transfer incomings so far this summer have been loan deals – although the one for Helder Costa is going to turn into a permanent £15m deal next year and they have an option to do the same with Jack Harrison – but there has been no sign of a new centre-forward.

Some frustrated fans on Twitter believe they needed a striker even if they had Roofe and Patrick Bamford in their ranks, so it will be a relief for them to know that if last season’s top marksman does leave a successor would be brought in.

Given the duo missed 15 and 22 games respectively between them in 2018/19 because of injury, there is no way that Bielsa could rely solely on Bamford going forward, with only youngsters Ryan Edmondson and Kun Temenuzhkov to back the former Middlesbrough man up.

It could be interesting few days ahead for the Yorkshire outfit then, who were linked with a big-money move for SPAL centre-forward Andrea Petagna earlier this week.

Tottenham fans react to speculation surrounding Dan Happe

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Leyton Orient have turned down a £300,000 offer from Tottenham Hotspur for central defender Dan Happe.

The 20-year-old made 46 appearances in the National League during the 2018-19 campaign, playing a key role as the O’s secured a return to the Football League.

The report claims that Leeds United, Leicester City and Norwich City are also interested in signing the Englishman in this summer’s transfer window.

And Orient are not exactly in a strong position when it comes to negotiations as Happe’s current deal will expire next summer.

Spurs are fairly well stocked in central defence but the Orient youngster has been compared to a young Harry Maguire.

And considering Maguire has been touted with an £70m move to Manchester United this summer, you’d assume most would be in favour of a move for Happe.

However, not everyone is convinced by his potential, while one fan suggested that order has been restored after an anomalous week of transfer activity at Spurs following the signings of Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele.

Here’s what the fans have had to say in response to the report…

Celtic’s Kieran Tierney situation must be resolved quickly, says Stiliyan Petrov

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Celtic star Stiliyan Petrov has called for Kieran Tierney’s transfer situation to be resolved as soon as possible, as reported by The Sunday Post.

What’s he said?

Tierney has been the subject of heavy transfer interest from Arsenal this summer, with the Gunners having bids rejected in June, before offering £25m for the player over the weekend.

It looks to be a hugely important transfer window for the 22-year-old and for the Hoops, with big decisions having to be made about the future.

Petrov understands that’s a natural part of a player’s career, having left Celtic for the English Premier League in 2006, but hopes that whatever happens it’s not a saga that continues for much longer.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

As quoted by The Sunday Post, the 40-year-old said:

“There comes a point in the careers of footballers that they weigh things up and make important decisions.

“Kieran Tierney may be in that position in this transfer window.

“If he goes, then the club will get excellent money for him. If he stays, then they are holding on to a quality footballer.

“But these are the kind of matters that you want resolved as soon as possible. It’s important to know where you stand and what needs to be done.”

What should Celtic’s next move be?

Petrov is right with his assertion that this Tierney situation needs to come to a head sooner rather than later.

If he does leave for the reported £25m, not only will Celtic have plenty of extra cash to play with in the rest of the transfer window, they’ll also need a new left-back.

Boli Bolingoli arrived recently from Rapid Vienna to play in the position, but beyond winger Jonny Hayes there is no other support at left-back.

Celtic now need to act decisively and find out what Tierney’s intentions are quickly.

If he does want a big move to Premier League then it’s in everyone’s best interests for the deal to be done as soon as possible considering Arsenal are said to have matched the club’s valuation of the left-back.

The pieces seem to be in place for the deal to be done, it’s now all about what the Scotland international wants to do.

Leeds fans debate what should be the next step for Jay-Roy Grot

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are split as to what the club should do with Jay-Roy Grot next season.

The Dutchman spent last season out on loan in his home country at VVV-Venlo where he has been quite impressive.

He scored six goals and created three assists for teammates in the Eredivisie during his loan spell, and that has prompted Leeds fans to wonder if he should return next season.

He didn’t reach those types of levels when he pulled on the famous white shirt of Leeds during his first season at the club where he scored only once in 20 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit.

Aged just 21 there is plenty of time for the youngster to develop as a player, and while some supporters want to see him given a chance next season others want him to go out on loan again.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Aston Villa Transfer Roundup: £10m Targett first choice, interest in Martin, Fornals move no-go

[ad_pod ]

With Aston Villa having secured promotion to the Premier League via the play-off finals last season, manager Dean Smith will now be looking to put his own stamp on the playing squad during this summer’s transfer window. Today’s Villa transfer roundup includes an interest in a top-tier full-back, a potential move for a Barcelona target and an update on a Spanish U21 international.

Matt Targett targeted

Southampton’s Matt Targett is of interest to the Villans according to the Sun. He is reportedly Smith’s first choice and would cost around £10m. Targett started 13 games for the Saints last season but spent most of the campaign as Ryan Bertrand’s understudy.

Villa battle Real and Barca for winger

According to Spanish website Cordopolis, Villa are interested in Cordoba’s Andres Martin. The winger is just 19 years old and enjoyed a breakthrough season in Spain’s second division, scoring seven goals and making four assists. Barcelona and Real Madrid are also all interested.

“Nothing” in Fornals speculation

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has poured cold water on a potential Pablo Fornals move to Villa Park. Wild claims on Twitter had suggested that the player had been given permission to have a medical with Villa ahead of a £25m move, but Nixon has said there is “nothing” in it. The Villareal midfielder is now expected to sign for West Ham in the coming days.

Transfer Focus: Celtic can’t consider selling Jozo Simunovic when defence is chaos

[ad_pod ]

Spanish side Alaves are interested in signing Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

The Croatian centre-back has had his ups and downs at the Hoops over the year and this season has found himself both on the fringes of Brendan Rodgers’ first-team squad and a crucial part of Neil Lennon’s side.

The paper say that the La Liga outfit are keen on adding him to their squad this summer and could make a move with a £4m bid.

The interest comes with Celtic struggling for numbers at centre-back right now.

Dedryck Boyata has signed a contract with Hertha Berlin, while Filip Benkovic is due to head back to parent club Leicester City.

The seven-figure fee for Simunovic may prove tempting for the Hoops but they can’t think about selling him given the current situation.

Why so important?

The jury may be out on the defender’s long-term future at Celtic Park but the club simply don’t have enough time to sign the defensive bodies required to navigate this summer’s difficult European qualifiers.

If Simunovic left it would mean just Kristoffer Ajer and Marvin Compper remained at the club and the latter has shown no sign of being capable for selection.

A lack of forward planning has left the Hoops already behind when it comes to being well stocked in defence and selling Simunovic without replacements ready to step in would be a crazy move that shouldn’t even be considered.
