Captaincy criticism par for the course – Sangakkara

Criticism from outside the camp doesn’t ruffle Kumar Sangakkara. He’s used to it

Kumar Sangakkara: “Playing the Aussies in Australia is a completely different story”•AFP

Criticism from outside the camp doesn’t ruffle Kumar Sangakkara. He’s used to it. But in Australia it usually takes something seriously wrong for an ex-player to break the code of support for the country’s captain.During Australia’s series loss in India Shane Warne targeted Ricky Ponting’s fields and Geoff Lawson has called for him to become a specialist batsman. Ponting has been unhappy with some of the coverage and it adds to the intrigue for the limited-overs contest against Sri Lanka, which acts as Australia’s last international item before the Ashes.Sangakkara has been captain of Sri Lanka for more than a year and has developed a relaxed attitude to criticism. “We come from a slightly different cricket-playing scene [than in Australia] where we get to see that almost every day,” he said before laughing loudly. “If it does happen it’s not the end of the world. It’s an opinion expressed and if you’re playing at this level you are able to handle it with equanimity.”Warne tweeted about Ponting’s fields to Nathan Hauritz and the issue continues to rumble, with the former legspinner writing about it on his website on Tuesday. Sangakkara was not surprised by Warne’s comments, but did not think it suggested the Australians were starting to crack.”Warne has very strong opinions on most things,” he said. “He is also a very shrewd and intelligent cricketer, I’m sure he expressed an opinion he thought was relevant. Everyone looks at everything differently, that’s what you realise very soon playing cricket. That’s the beauty of cricket, it’s all put down to interpretation.”One of the reasons for the burst of local complaints is Australia’s drop to No.5 in the Test rankings, their worst since the system was introduced. They are still comfortably on top in one-day internationals, 16 points above South Africa, but appear more vulnerable given the slip in five-day status.Sangakkara doesn’t pretend to understand how the ranking system works but is certain the hosts won’t be a pushover. “Playing the Aussies in Australia is a completely different story,” he said. “How they will look at it in between an Ashes series is something left for them. For us, it’s a great challenge to play Australia anytime.”The Sri Lankans open their tour with a one-dayer against Queensland at the Gabba on Friday and have two more warm-ups before the Twenty20 international in Perth on October 31. Three ODIs follow as the teams start to focus seriously on next year’s World Cup.”We’re trying a few new guys, but we’re settled to a great extent,” Sangakkara said. “There are still a few places up for grabs and we need to have guys ready and able to take up that spot. We have a lot of younger players who have come in, and a lot of experienced players who do not feature in our squad. It’s an interesting time for us.”

William Porterfield joins Warwickshire

Gloucestershire has lost the services of William Porterfield, the Ireland opening batsman

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Oct-2010William Porterfield, the Ireland opening batsman, has left Gloucestershire after signing a three-year deal with Warwickshire. Gloucester have also lost medium-pacer Gemaal Hussain who too is likely to move up to Division One if he joins county champions Nottinghamshire.Gloucester had a disappointing 2009 season, being placed fifth in Division Two after losing nine and winning only six of their matches. Porterfield and Hussain’s departures come in the wake of Steve Kirby and Anthony Ireland’s exits from the county. The county were unhappy with Hussain’s decision but the bowler said he had to make the move if he wanted to improve his chances of playing for England. “I feel I need to challenge myself by playing Division One cricket,” Hussain told the county’s website. Tom Richardson, Gloucestershire’s chief executive, said he didn’t agree with Hussain’s view. “It’s very disappointing as you’ve got this guy who came to us last year from nowhere,” Richardson told . Hussain was the division’s leading wicket-taker with 67 at 22.34 from 15 matches.Porterfield will join his Ireland team-mate Boyd Rankin at Warwickshire. Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, was pleased with the season’s signings which include Pakistan batsman Younis Khan. “Will has proved his potential at international and domestic level and I believe he has a great deal more to offer.”

Villa fans react to Cameron Archer loan

Aston Villa confirmed on Monday that young forward Cameron Archer has joined Championship club Preston North End for the second half of the season.

Consequently, a number of Villa supporters have weighed in with their thoughts on the update via social media.

Archer has impressed in claret and blue this season for both the senior and under-23 sides, scoring 12 goals in as many games. The 20-year-old scored four times in two Carabao Cup games against Barrow and Chelsea and has also made three Premier League appearances this season from the bench under former Villa manager Dean Smith.

He’ll now join up with Ryan Lowe, Steven Gerrard’s good friend, in the second tier until the end of the current campaign. Archer, who signed a new contract at Villa Park last month, could make his debut for Preston on Wednesday night against West Brom.

Rangers: O’Rourke delivers big Olsen claim

A significant claim has been made regarding Rangers and their pursuit of a new forward this month…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that the Gers are working on a deal to sign Andreas Skov Olsen this month and that they have been keeping tabs on his progress.

It remains to be seen how far along any prospective transfer is, but the reporter believes that the manager and sporting director are both keen to get this move over the line.

He told GIVMESPORT: “Skov Olsen, from Bologna, seems to be the one that Ross Wilson and van Bronckhorst have been pushing for. He is the one that they’ve been tracking for quite a long time.”

This comes after it was reported earlier this week that Belgian outfit Club Brugge are closing in on a deal for the attacker.

Excitement for Rangers fans

Rangers fans will surely be left excited by this claim from O’Rourke, as it appears to offer them fresh hope that Olsen will end up at Ibrox by the end of this month.

Despite the player reportedly being on his way to Brugge, the Gers remain keen on a deal and are pushing for it to happen, which shows that Wilson will not give up easily. Until the documents are signed and the announcement is made, Olsen is still available to sign before the end of the transfer window, and there is a collective desire from the top dogs in Glasgow to bring him to the club.

Supporters will be excited by this, as he could be a fantastic addition to the team and solve a problem area for Van Bronckhorst. No one player has been able to nail down the right wing position on a regular basis for the Gers, with Scott Wright lining up there in the draw with Aberdeen earlier this week.

He was hooked off in the 64th minute after creating one chance and losing six of his seven ground battles, whilst also failing with his one dribble attempt, as per SofaScore. The winger has two goals and zero assists in 13 Premiership matches, whilst Ianis Hagi – who can play centrally or out wide – also has two goals and zero assists in 15 league games.

Olsen has two assists in just six Serie A starts this season and has produced five goals and three assists in seven starts for Denmark in their 2022 World Cup qualifiers. This suggests that he could come in and provided an added goalscoring and creative threat on the right flank which Hagi and Wright have been unable to offer, which is why Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with the club’s concerted efforts to bring him to Ibrox.

Pietersen praises England power-hitters

Kevin Pietersen could be leaving this tournament at any moment should his wife go into labour, and in the form he showed against Pakistan it will be a considerable hole to fill if he is absent

Kevin Pietersen could be leaving this tournament at any moment should his wife go into labour, and in the form he showed against Pakistan it will be a considerable hole to fill if he is absent. His unbeaten 73 meant England eased home with three balls to spare against Pakistan to put them in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals. Pietersen arrived a few days later than his team-mates for this event, after spending time at home following the IPL, and his only warm-up innings was a first-ball duck against South Africa. However, he’d shown consistent form at the IPL and was in decent touch in Guyana before twice falling to poorly-placed pull shots. Pietersen used to be the one batsman England could rely on to clear the boundary, but now the line-up is packed with power following the inclusion of Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter at the top, plus Eoin Morgan at No. 5.”I’ve played in the team for five or six years and to have a batting line-up like we have now is incredible,” Pietersen said. “For every bloke from one down to nine or ten to be able to hit sixes is brilliant. When I started we had [Marcus] Trescothick but didn’t have many six-hitters and now most of our guys can hit sixes so it’s brilliant for English cricket.”Pietersen’s first significant impact on the match had come in the field when he sprinted around the boundary at deep midwicket to hold a stunning catch to remove the dangerous Umar Akmal, who still had time to extend Pakistan’s total. Pietersen hasn’t always been the safest pair of hands in the field having started his Test career with a rash of dropped catches in the 2005 Ashes, but this take highlighted how mobile England now are in the field.”Those are catches you go for and if you get them they look great,” he said, “but with hands like I’ve got you aren’t meant to catch them, that is for sure.”The contrast with Pakistan couldn’t have been greater as they produced a horrific fielding display. Saeed Ajmal managed to drop three chances at mid-on and mid-off, Abdur Razzaq put down a caught-and-bowled opportunity against Pietersen and Fawad Alam palmed a tough catch over the boundary for six. However, coach Waqar Younis played down the significance of a poor match.”The way we dropped the catches was very frustrating, but we aren’t out of the tournament so don’t have to worry about that,” he said. “I thought 147 was a decent total, maybe 15 runs short, but with our bowling attack I thought we could manage it. However, you have to give credit to Kevin Pietersen. He batted like a champion and took the game away from us.”

Liverpool: Danjuma can replace Salah & Mane

Liverpool are set to launch a big-money move for Villareal star Arnaut Danjuma in this January transfer window as they look to try and cover for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish publication Fichajes, Jurgen Klopp’s side are preparing a £37.5m bid for the Netherlands international this month as they look to try and cover for their two AFCON-bound superstars.

The report adds that there is doubt over whether Villareal would be willing to sanction a sale for the winger, but such a deal would represent a significant amount of profit from when they signed him from Bournemouth.

He can replace Salah and Mane

Speaking to This is Futbol about Danjuma, former Leeds man Carlton Palmer simply said: “He’s an exciting player. He’s got flair, he’s got pace and he scores goals” – exactly what he showcased in his time with Bournemouth.

The former Cherries speedster netted 17 goals and provided another eight assists in all competitions last season, and it was no surprise that his performances earned rave reviews.

No categories

Speaking on The Official EFL Podcast, former Bournemouth boss Jonathan Woodgate said: “He’s an exceptional player, in a really good place at the minute, Arnie. He’s another one who I’ve always done a lot of work on him at his previous clubs, so I knew all about him coming into this role, I knew what type of player he was.

“He made an unbelievable run for one of the goals, I showed him that, but then I showed him what he did winning the ball back, when he had to sprint 50 yards and get the ball back. That’s what makes a really good player, for me, getting that work rate in because we know, with the ball his feet, he’s a top player. Can he do the rest going the other way? And he’s starting to show that now, so yeah, he’s doing well.”

His debut campaign at Villareal has seen him hit the ground running, scoring nine goals in just 18 games in all competitions, proving he is the kind of goal-scoring winger that could try and fill the boots of Liverpool’s much-vaunted wide-men.

The Villareal star is exactly what Liverpool need given that the likes of Salah and Mane are off to AFCON, and can help ensure they don’t miss the sheer number of goals and assists they produce.

Meanwhile, Liverpool must make a swoop for this Bundesliga midfielder…

Sellars on Wolves January transfer plans

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming over some transfer news that has been shared by Scott Sellars.

Speaking about the January transfer window, the technical director at Molineux has now claimed that there will not be a large number of new signings at the Midlands club this month, and will focus on giving Bruno Lage immediate back-up in case of injuries or positive COVID-19 cases.

They will also give opportunities to those who have come back from being on loan, like Dion Sanderson.

However, the squad is not the biggest as it is, and currently riddled with injuries (Transfermarkt), meaning that the Wanderers should really be bringing in a few players in order to fill the squad and help Lage build momentum for the second part of the season.

Newcastle transfer news on Jason Knight

Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing Jason Knight in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Derby woes

With Derby County now under threat of liquidation because of their financial woes, players like the 20-year-old may have to be sold in January in order to raise some important funds for the club.

They currently sit on just one point in the Championship table after having several points deducted, and they are under serious threat of relegation.

Still, that has not stopped Knight from performing to his best, with two goals and two assists in the league so far this season.

The Latest: Newcastle keen on Knight

As per Football League World, Newcastle are just one of a number of clubs in the Premier League who are keen on signing Knight in January, along with Everton, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Leeds United and Burnley.

He is a leading contender to leave the Rams, as administrators have refused to rule out selling players in January in order to raise funds if a buyer for the club cannot be found before then.

The Lowdown: Makes sense

A move for Knight in January would make a lot of sense, as even with the risk of the Magpies getting relegated, he would then be back in the Championship and potentially ready to sign for another club.

Described as a ‘manager’s dream’ by Rams boss Wayne Rooney back in January, the youngster can play in a variety of different positions all over the pitch, which could be very useful to Eddie Howe and his squad.

At just 20 years of age, he has already broken into the Republic of Ireland senior side, and former Irish international Andy Reid thinks that he has a ‘big future’ in the game.

It would duly seem that signing him would be a smart piece of business from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.
